Best Asian Dessert Shops and Cafes in San Diego | Eater San Diego

"If you’re looking for specialty cream puffs from Japan, this bakery group has found an abode on Girard Avenue in La Jolla after opening in San Diego for the second time. Started as a tiny shop in Osaka, Japan by Yuji Hirota (known around town for his recognizable fluffy white beard), there are now 400 stores in 15 countries. Their dessert is made of a double layer of choux pastry crowned with a sprinkling of crispy pie crust, with fillings made of ice cream or the original version, a mix of whipped cream and vanilla custard." - Helen I. Went during their grand opening where the menu was still limited. You basically choose a flavor puff and have it filled with vanilla bean or chocolate. The chocolate filling is an additional charge, and unfortunately, the ones we ordered with chocolate fillings were not done correctly. We didn't realize it until we were already home. The filling, however, was quite generous. The creme puffs were mediocre, at best. I don't think they're worth the price point. They are located in a small strip with limited parking. I think they should have signs for better ordering flow because people were all cramming inside, standing everywhere, to where there were no sense of direction or knew who was next in "line" to order. It ended up causing confusion to everyone, as some wanted to see the display case before ordering, some just wanted to try not to block the small walkway, people skipping each other, etc. The last thing I would like to note is their food safety handling protocol. Owner or manager, if you are reading this, I hope you discuss proper glove usage with your team. I witnessed the cashier in gloves assist with entering orders, touched her cell phone, and then proceeded with the same gloves to pack the pastries. This would probably be a support it once and be done deal.

I was excited to be able to try this place without any lines. Parking here is very limited. We ordered the matcha puffs, chocolate, creme brulee, & Cola puffs. They fill the puffs to order. We took it to go but inside, they have a few tables and chairs. The puffs were huge. But it was very good.

I used to go to the Beard Papa in Japan, so I was dying to go here. I bought Original, Chocolate, and Cookies & Cream shell. But inside are same. It's custard cream. I didn't know that. Of course, every kind is good. I realized that shell is more soft than Japanese one. I ordered 22 puffs, and waiting time was,,, so-so. I know that store was opened a few days ago. It's good for the timing. And staff was kind in spite of I ordered 22 puffs at the busy time.

Awesome! So glad they opened a store in San Diego. I was stationed in Japan for several years and loved Beard Papa's when I was there. The cream puffs are identical to what I enjoyed in Japan and the service was polite and efficient, just like in Japan but without the language barrier. Also like the Japanese locations, it's over the counter service, so don't expect a cool, hip atmosphere. The cream puffs more than compensate for that.! If you are not familiar with Beard Papa's you need to check it out immediately.

Very kind and hard working people. The Owner is a good person. Ideally for optimum quality, you should eat them in a few hours. The default puff will have powdered sugar and puff back, so be ready for it. Personally, I enjoyed the matcha out of the grand opening puffs. If you're enjoying a beverage from across the street, these puffs are perfect complement hot or cold.

I typically don't review on Google, but the cream puffs at Beard Papa's are SO DELICIOUS that I thought everyone should be told. I wasn't even a big cream puff fan but these are out of this world good. I strongly recommend (and the staff at the Kearny Mesa location are really great). All flavors were yummy but Oreo cookie was my favorite. You can have vanilla or chocolate filling stuffed into any cream puff topping. Others include chocolate, matcha, strawberry and more

Waited for months and months for this place to open, the soft openings had lines that were out to the street and down the street, so the anticipation was intense waiting for them to open, when I finally got to try these cream puffs I was very excited to finally taste these. They were very appealing visually, I ordered an original, a chocolate and a coke flavored cream puffs, they were filled as you ordered them with a tasty well textured cream, however the shell had a very odd taste of bitterness that's hard to describe, they are a large cream puff, and for a cost of $5.00 each they better be, unfortunately the bitterness was just to much to stomach, we did not finish any of the three puffs we tried. We will stick to the cream puffs from our favorite local bakery. Sorry Beard Papa, we won't be back and won't reccomend these to anyone
