"You’ll need at least two napkins, maybe three, after a gravy-soaked roast beef po’ boy at Bear’s, a local institution and the gold standard for po’ boys on the Northshore. Really all the po’ boys are just about perfect, served on Leidenheimer French bread, of course. Get the hand-battered onion rings, fried to order." - Beth D'Addono

Yelp
Went here last weekend and it did not disappoint. We got two of the roast beef's. One was a bun and one was a po-boy. They were toasted which was nice. Now I got a half and I think somebody got a 1 or 2 inches of my half, so it was a little small for me. But would not go back because of that,,,,no I am just going to order a whole because that is what I should have done from the beginning. This a good solid roast beef,,,,,,, beware it is messy. I wished I could give you a photo but it disappeared that quick.

Yelp
I came across this place through word of mouth. I was just visiting and one of my family friend recommended this place for Po Boys and it did not disappoint! I recommend getting the Ferdie and Fried Shrimp poboys. The ferdie really blew my mind, there was a lot of meat and the flavor was just on point! I would say this is one of the best local spots in Mandeville for Po Boys!

Yelp
A co-worker took me here for lunch, and I had low expectations since I'm not really a fan of po' boys. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The establishment is unassuming, but the po' boys are phenomenal. I've been a fan ever since, and now I use this place as the gold standard for rating po' boys.

Yelp
If you are looking for a place to enjoy a delicious and authentic poboy, you should definitely check out Bear's Restaurant in Covington. They use fresh ingredients, homemade gravy, and locally baked bread to make their sandwiches, which are loaded with meat, cheese, and veggies. You can choose from a variety of options, such as roast beef, shrimp, ham, hamburger, and more. They also have fries, chips, cookies, and pralines to complete your meal. The service at Bear's Restaurant is friendly and fast, and the staff is always ready to help you with your order. They are attentive and courteous, and they make you feel welcome and comfortable. The restaurant is clean and cozy, with a casual and relaxed atmosphere. The restaurant is small and can get crowded during peak hours, but the wait is worth it. Bear's Restaurant is a must-try for anyone who loves poboys and wants to experience a taste of New Orleans without having to drive to the Southshore. It is one of the most popular restaurants in downtown Covington, and it has a loyal and satisfied customer base. You will not regret visiting this place, and you will want to come back for more. I recommend trying the famous Roast Beef or Ferdie Po-Boy! You can thank me later

Yelp
Shrimp poboy is loaded with shrimp. The food is basic but good when you want something better than Subway or Quiznos.

Yelp
Are you kidding a review of bears there's nothing I could say other than the best Poboy you can ever imagine. Roast beef number one shrimp number two you can even get a combination of the two you can't go wrong no matter what you order it bears, and now they have a second location in Mandeville.

Yelp
I have loved Bear's since the early 90s and will probably continue to love it until the day I die. I started going to Bear's with my dad when he worked just down the street at Habitat for Humanity. I use to hate going to the office with him (because there is only so much playing in the ReStore a 7 year old can do) but I would always go in hopes that we would go to Bear's for lunch. Back then I'd get a Roast Beef Poboy on a bun and an Abita Root Beer. That thing was sooo juicy it would fall apart in my tiny hands unless I ate it like I was spooning water into my mouth from a stream. Now, 30 years later, I don't live near Bear's but anytime I am within an hours driving distance I make the trip to get a Roast Beef Poboy and my Abita Root beer (Now that I am an adult and can eat the whole thing, I no longer get it on the bun). Year after year the quality continues to satisfy and impressive. In 30 years I have never had anything less than a perfect experience at Bear's. And if they stay open, I'll be making the trek across state lines to get my poboy for the next 30 years.

Yelp
I'm from Midwest and I would move to Louisiana just so I could eat Bears whenever I wanted . Very affordable. One sandwich is enough for me and my husband to share. The roast beef is my favorite fully dressed. The fried shrimp is also amazing. And so is the Ham. I haven't had anything here I didn't like. This place is very busy, so calling ahead will save you some time.

Kelly Y.

Yelp
Awesome roast beef Poboy. Four of us tried different sandwiches and loved them all. This is the store in Metairie. Service was great. We didn't have issues parking, but I could see it being an issue during busy times as there is limited street parking so you would have to park under the overpass.

Debi W.

Yelp
The best roast beef poboys I have ever tasted. The ladies taking orders are always friendly.

Madeline R.

Yelp
Great Great Seafood and Roast Beef Poor-boys. WOW delicious . Just writing this makes me hungry. Good service also.

Crystal R.

Yelp
I love to support smaller restaurants that are not chains. So it was a no brained to go to Bear's Restaurant when we were in Covington, LA, last weekend. And it did NOT disappoint. Y'all, those were the largest Po Boys I'd ever seen. And they were stuffed full of meat and shrimp. As much as I loved them, I could have been stuffed just ordering a half.

Alex R.

Yelp
Best poboys in town! I highly recommend this local restaurant! This is our go-to place!

Paul H.

Yelp
This is a must when visiting Covington. The roast beef poboy is amazing. The shrimp poboy is also delicious.

Kirk B.

Yelp
Hands down best shrimp poboy on the northshore maybe the greater Nola area. They have been family owned and operated for years and I have never heard of anyone complain! Word of advice unless your spending $25 or more bring cash minimal credit card total is $20-25. Get you one for later you will want another

Robby M.

Yelp
Bear's has some great food, or so I hear - I've only had the Surf and Turf poboy...a fried shrimp sandwich, dressed and dripping with roast beef debris. Out of the dozen or so visits, the sandwich has ALWAYS been fantastic. The shrimp are big and crispy, the debris is bristling with flavor, and the bread stands up to it all from plate to mouth gloriously. You read that right, a dozen sandwiches. I'd eat two right now, too, dare me. It's a little slice of the NOLA I grew up in; the folks are friendly and fun, and the food is excellent - don't miss a treat like Bear's when you're in town.

Alexander W.

Yelp
Pretty darn good. Ordered the Surf and Turf poboy - impressed with the fried shrimp (nothing special but done well) but even more so the roast beef portion (probably the best roast beef I've had) With that being said, really enjoyed it for the first half sandwich then it started to weigh me down a bit. I definitely did not need a large sandwich, but if you can split it with someone definitely more economical. Definitely come check it out if you're in the area. If you can't wait around, try calling in. Took a few tries but didn't take more than a few minutes to call in.

Yelp
Best Poboys in the area. The family is friendly and work hard to please the masses at lunch. Roast beef is tender, thinly sliced and juicy!! The family also makes the best platings for sale! Trust me!! Can't wait to get my hands on that Roast Beef Poboy Dressed with gravy on the side with Abita Root Beet for pickup today!!!! Thank you BEAR'S!!!

Wanda K.

Yelp
Excellent shrimp Poboys! The place is always busy. The best time seems to be around 1pm.

Chris F.

Yelp
Best Roast Beef Poboy in the world.................hands down................take it as a fact Jack!

Dirk M.

Yelp
Get the barbecue ferdie , half is all you need it's awesome ! Worth any wait time ! :)

Haidee L.

Yelp
Best roast beef anywhere!!! The French bread is delicious and the beef is stacked on thick. The gravy makes this po-boy messy in the best way possible!! Definitely recommend.

Ashley W.

Yelp
They have great food. I dislike how the hours of operation cause absolute chaos on one of the busiest streets in the city - but it is what it is. I totally understand why people love the food!

Tommy O.

Yelp
Always the best. Nothing else to say. Shrimp were overflowing and perfectly fried. Asking for warm bread makes every Bears poboy even better

Aimee T.

Yelp
The best poboys I have ever had in my life hands down. No one can compete. My favorites are their roast beef and ham and cheese. So good!

Bruce B.

Yelp
Fantastic Po-boys. Take them to the park for a nice lunch. Jeez, they insist I keep writing before I can post.

Roberta C.

Yelp
Best poboys on the Northshore! Plus tasty fries and giant chocolate chunk cookies. The dining area is simple diner style, and there's always a line, so call ahead and get it to go for a picnic under any nearby live oak.

John E.

Yelp
Good poboy. Used to be slightly better quality, certainly much cheaper, and the staff seemed friendlier in the past, but definitely worth it.

Jessica V.

Yelp
Bear's is an institution. We recently moved back to the Northshore from Denver and we've been checking out new spots and old favorites. Bear's was high on the favorite list and we were certainly hopeful the flavors were unchanged. Good news: they are exactly as wonderful as they always were! I admit, we only ordered one type of poboy: roast beef. Three of them! The meat is sliced thin, plentiful and full of flavor. Mayo amount may be too much for some, but all three of us LOVED the amount of all the fixins, mayo included. Canned Barq's for the win. We'll be back for fried shrinp, Ferdie, and bbq beef!

Lauren T.

Yelp
Went in for lunch (only open for lunch tues-fri) & got half of a shrimp poboy (mayo only), a side of fries, and a homemade praline. For a half poboy, the portion is large! Mine had a TON of fried shrimp. Absolutely delicious!!!!! Next time we will skip the fries (they are average) and just get the poboy and a praline. Best praline i've ever had! Bear's is a WIN.

Cheryl L.

Yelp
Bears is by far an excellent pony, wait was kinda long but worth it!

Collin L.

Yelp
BEST cheeseburger. They use roast beef debris with their ground beef and it 100% makes a huge difference of flavor from any of the other spots around.

Patrice K.

Yelp
We had poboys in 3 different locations over this last weekend! Bears hands down wins!!!Amazing sandwiches!!

Jennifer G.

Yelp
The Best! Bbq beef ever! So amazing and worth the wait. They are very efficient and so consistent in their food. The roast beef dressed is another favorite. Their fried shrimp could be 2 poor boys.

Bob T.

Yelp
Fantastic po-boys! The roast beef po-boy has to be - hands down - the best in the entire world!

Rob S.

Yelp
Old school po boy place. Awesome roast beef po boys. Place is small but wouldn't want it to expand. Love it like it is. Get plenty of napkins when you go!

Jackie B.

Yelp
Best roast beef poboy of life!! This restaurant is a staple of the community and better never go out of business!!!

Kathy G.

Yelp
The absolute best poyboys on the planet. Roast beef is my fave. In all the years I've gone there it is consistently great. They still operate old school but it works and nothing changes. Always delicious!

JK L.

Yelp
Very good sandwiches loaded with meat. I just wish they'd get my order right next time.

Kyle T.

Yelp
Great tasting po boys. Love their roast beef. Try the surf n turf and you'll never want any other kind of po boy!

Brad B.

Yelp
Best Poboys in town; worth the 30-45 min wait...My favorite is the FERDIE PoBoy. Call ahead and order.

Shane W.

Yelp
Reall y hard of folks that live out of town that would like to enjoy a good po-boy when you are closed on weekends. I assume you don't need the business,

It's My M.

Yelp
We had the Shrimp and the Beef Po-Boys. They were both delicious. Shrimps were falling out of the sandwich. Well served and tasty. Definitely recommend.

Kiley H.

Yelp
Great local poboys! Very family oriented. Food is always great! Small hole in the wall please but great!

Belinda M.

Yelp
Best poboys around! The roast beef or shrimp is my favorite but they have fantastic burgers too

Joe D.

Yelp
Whenever I travel I compare every sandwich to a Bear's Po boy. It never works out, but I have to follow my gut. Bears is still the best roast beef sandwich I've ever had in my very long life. If you're traveling through and reading this don't miss your chance to stop at Bear's. They are only open for lunch (10:30 AM till 3 PM I think) Tuesday through Saturday but if you have the chance you will not regret it. And if you're hanging out at Saint Tammany Hospital, like I am right now, right down the street, it's only a mile away, please don't punish yourself by eating in the cafeteria when you can have a Bear's Po boy.

Michael G.

Yelp
The best Roast Beef po-boy ever.. Wish they would stay open longer! Or at least open on Saturdays.

Daryl T.

Yelp
Best Po Boy in town Bring your empty stomach and a friend to help hold each other up when you dine at this local gem

Lindsay R.

Yelp
This place has the best roast beef Poboy I've ever had. I've been eating them for decades. I'm giving them five stars even though their hours of operation seriously cramp my style. It's hard to bring a poboy to the pool if the Poboy store isnt open on weekends!!! Please, please, please open back up on Saturdays! We miss you!

Nick S.

Yelp
Best po boys in town and arguably the best including the entire Southshore. Food is always consistent. I actually prefer the inside being closed because my anxiety would go through the roof having to wait for a table and confronting people that would just come in and sit and completely ignore the people waiting to sit. I'm sure some were completely innocent, not knowing the procedure of getting a table. My favorite is the surf and turf.
