Eating Beyond Portland’s Hipster Restaurant Scene | Eater

"A dinner-only supper-club-style restaurant that leans into a curated, throwback four-course menu on select nights, offering tightly composed seasonal plates such as morel-and-asparagus pastas and a hunter’s chicken accented with preserved tomatoes from the previous summer. The service model and menu structure evoke an intimate, ritualized dining experience that prioritizes discipline and seasonality." - Meghan McCarron

Google
First time visit! Great little place. My server Morgan was attentive and friendly. They have over 300 types of bourbons and a Bourbon Bible which is amazing (went with Macallan). I had the bao buns (no chiles), which were delicious. The vibe was really nice, the place was buzzing but not overly loud or anything, especially for being a smaller space. There are several seats at the bar and a decent amount of tables. I took the pork belly sandwich (no carrots or chiles) and curly fries to go to share with a friend. It was actually really good. I'm not sure what category of food to put this place in because there are Vietnamese dishes, BBQ, burgers, and Spanish food; it's a nice mix. I would recommend trying it out.

Google
Honestly, this was a big disappointment. I’m not sure if they actually reheated my wings and brisket but they were dry as hell. Being from Texas, this was not even close to brisket. There was barely a smoke line. The bark was so-so. The wings… sad. They said that they’re smoked but I didn’t taste anything smoked. They were just so dry. It tasted a bit like they were refried. Maybe my standards are too high? I’m dunno but I wouldn’t spend $40 again on it.

This place is sooo good! A hidden gem! The food is so delicious and packs so much flavor. We went for brunch and I had the breakfast nachos, shared the bao bun kakuni and my partner had the chicken sandwich. Bao bun was small but mighty with flavor and had a little kick of spice. The nachos had the right balance of meat, beans, and salsa. The staff is friendly too. Highly recommend stopping by here if you’re in the area. We plan to go back!!

Google
We stopped here for dinner cause we were craving ribs. We sat outside (bring bug spray) and we were surprised to hear about dollar wings! We ordered beast dry rub wings, plain wings, and beast BBQ sauce and they were all delicious. We ordered a full rack of ribs to share. They were fantastic! The meat fell right off the bone. I highly recommend getting these!

Google
I did take out. Brisket was dry and inedible. Cannot belive cook would serve this. Chili had very little meat. $9 smoked sausage was very small. Mac and cheese was ok. Salad was good. I don't recommend this place. Going downhill.

Google
Great outdoor eating space and dog friendly outdoors. Will provide water bowls for them. Great service and incredible food and drinks. Have gone back 3 weeks in a row and will absolutely be back again.

Google
Bourbon, beer, wings, burgers, brisket… i mean that right there should make anyone want to go there. Service is always amazing. They go above and beyond to make you feel like you belong! Amazing wings and flavors. Amazing drinks. Service is always friendly and efficient! Get there early to beat the crowds. I know saying that hurts me but Id rather all get to experience greatness!

Google
The wings were devine and being discounted on Wednesdays makes it even more worth it. The drinks are made strong and delicious. As for the entrées I was slightly disappointed that my chicken wasn't crispy it looked it but didn't taste the way it looked. The pulled pork was super flavorful. The mac and cheese was probably one of the best I've had in a while. 10/10

Yelp
We stopped in for their late night happy hour after eating at Dutchess Biercafe. At 9 it was still really busy outside but quiet inside. It's a small space, but it's cozy. They had ductless a/c units on the wall, but I'm not sure they were running because it was still quite hot inside. Our server was quick to tend to us and very friendly. They have a great tap list, much like Dutchess, only theirs is lager-centric rather than Belgian. Exactly what you want with some BBQ. You can't beat the 50% off price tag at happy hour either. We also decided to share some of the crispy ribs. The rib was cooked perfectly. Perfectly tender, but still holding its shape. The gochujang glaze was a little sweet and funky, and complimented the crispy texture. We'll definitely be visiting again to sample more food and drinks in the future!

Yelp
Service never disappoints. Tried some new drinks and they all were great. The Fishkill Vice was more my favorite, it's more on the sweeter side but that la how I like my drinks. The Feral Fries were crunchy with the sauce was tangy, a great combo for the taste buds. The sandwiches were superb. It was packed but glad we were able to dine, awesome music, appreciate how easy going it feels being there.

Yelp
Good food and great beer, not a large menu but the food is tasty and filling...very unique food.

Yelp
Got home from eating at Beast and wondered for a brief moment if I should turn around and go back -- it was THAT GOOD. I had the chicken wings, which were probably the best I've ever had. They had a nice assortment of sauces, but for me, the best was their "special sauce." (Although the buffalo sauce was also excellent and packed a lovely punch). I got the wings with the dry rub, although you have other options if you want a different flavor. There's a special on wings Wednesday nights, so I'm thinking I'll be there weekly... Because I remembered I should probably eat some vegetables, I had a side salad with green goddess dressing. Fresh salad and the dressing was excellent. My partner got the chicken sandwich, which also had the special sauce I used on my wings. She said it was "out of this world" (part of that may have been influenced by the curly fries she had on the side). Regardless, there was nothing left on either of our plates by the time we left. The place is small, so on a Saturday night we ended up sitting at the bar --which was actually kind of neat. It meant we got to talk with some of the servers, who were all super nice and helpful. Can't wait to go back!

Yelp
First time here, and super impressed. Local business owners who opened up another spot in Fishkill. Ambiance is warm and welcoming. Very cute interior with a large bar and plenty of tables. We sat at the bar and the service was great. Very attentive and helpful. Our bartender told us happy hour was ending soon so we were able to take advantage of that. Very helpful. Food was great. Menu has a lot of variety. This is a pretty "meaty" place, just so folks are aware. We had the nachos and tacos - both very well seasoned and delicious. I would highly recommend this spot. I will definitely be back!
google avatar

Yelp
Love it here, food is great and we can bring the baby dog with us. The food doesn't disappoint. Ice cream for dessert is also nearby. BBQ it's only during certain days of the week.

Yelp
First time here for brunch... Great food, friendly servers, awesome staff... one of the best bbq places I've been to. Definitely recommend this place

Yelp
This place was so so good!! Our waitress was so sweet and accommodating. The staff went above and beyond to make our first visit special. We had the mimosas, Weistephaner Hefeweizen on tap!!, and a Bellini. Ordered the brisket omelet - it was in need of sauce or something as it was a little dry. Strawberry waffle and bacon were delicious. I ordered the waffle smokehouse. It was the best!! I couldn't eat it fast enough to keep those flavors going! Loved it.
google avatar

Krystle P.

Yelp
$20 unlimited mimosas! Should I say more lol. Brunch is a great time to stop in. Their smoked brisket in my smokehouse sandwich was amazing.

Yelp
My husband and I had dinner at Beast and liked it very much. I had the nachos (with pork) and thought they were great. The atmosphere is fun and the service was great. I'd go back.

Jizelle E.

Yelp
Service was great. Awesome specials on Thursday including $10 miller pitcher. The Bao Bun-- Amazing. The Beast dry rub wings, so so good. Also had the sausage and peppers classic sandwich which was exactly that...classic. Looking forward to going back!

Yelp
Yes! Food is great, service is above and beyond, our lovely waitress Jen was professional with a great smile. She explained all the dishes and even suggested the Brisket sandwich on a bun with curly fries, eventhough it was not in the menu! It was a killer! I had the Chopped brisket, Queso, barbecue sauce on a yummy Texas toast, served with delicious curly fries. We shared a Lava cake with Ice cream. It is a very small sitting area, a big bar! Soon we will be able to seat outside and enjoy a great meal Al fresco. Prices are good too. Try The Beast, you'll like it.

Yelp
10/10 meal. No notes. Service is great, food is outstanding. They are not lying when they say seating is "limited" however the experience is well worth the wait. Their mac n' cheese is absolute heaven. The brisket is perfect. The beer selection is extensive. Definitely the best meal I've had in the area.

Yelp
This a tremendous hidden gem - quaint & welcoming, delicious & fairly priced food items, and friendly, professional service. In addition to a wide variety of top shelf liquors & tasty craft beer offerings, there are also some optional Cannabis (as well as CBD) drinks available. Very nice & simple local place which I'll surely revisit.

Yelp
We decided to try someplace we hadn't been to yet. We had heard good things about this place. It's conveniently located in the village of Fishkill. The service is friendly. We started with the crispy smoked wings which were pretty good. Then we had the beast potter which is more than enough or four people to share. Then we had the beignet for dessert which was just alright. Overall it was a pretty good dining experience and I'd recommend this place.

Yelp
This is our first time coming to The Beast since opening. We love the Dutchess Bier Cafe, so we have high expectations for this place since they shared the same owner. It's walking distance from DBC and in an old town hall building. The inside is smaller than how it seems from the outside, but offers plenty of seating. Large bar with very comfortable seats which takes up half of the space, the other half are for sit-down dining. They will have more seating outdoors when the weather is warmer. We came here on a Saturday for a late lunch as party of 4. We sat at the bar for a round of drinks while waiting for a table. The bartender was very sweet and welcoming and they had a nice selection of draft beer on tap. Not as many as DBC, but still plenty to keep you happy. DBC only serves beer and wine, but here they offer a full bar for mixed drinks/cocktail. We did not have one but the drink menu looks nice and we will next time! For food, they were offering their brunch menu which had plenty of yummy stuff to choose from. The menu is BBQ based; We ordered the brisket omelette, brisket sandwich, and BLT. I really enjoyed my omelette, it was topped with a creamy sauce which made the omelette even more scrumptious. Every one of us cleaned our plate, so I would say that's a win! Laid back atmosphere, welcoming viv, I highly recommend it!

Yelp
Stopped in for a quick burger. The burger was fresh, moist and tasty ensconced in a potato bun. The Czech beer was reminiscent of Prague. So light refreshing and absolutely delicious. Service was friendly and welcoming. Ambience was typical bar, dark and cozy.

Yelp
Absolutely great and pleasant restaurant! My family and I went towards the end of the night near closing but the staff treated us kindly and didn't rush us at all. Our waitress was extremely friendly and the food was delicious, we got too many dishes to count. We sat outside, and the area was clean, silverware shiny. Great experience all in all 10/10

Yelp
So bad! Grease. Great. Grease. The Smashburger was gross. The salad was bad. I mean, how do you make a bad salad? Greasy, re-heated French fries. No ambiance. They need a new decorator. Hard pass on this place.

Ari R.

Yelp
The ribs were incredible! Everything was delicious and very flavorful. I don't know what was on the ribs but it was out of this world!!!

Yelp
I stopped at Beast last weekend on Saturday. I loved everything that we tried Bao Buns, wings with the habanero sauce, and the pork belly banh mi. All were delicious!! They offer mainly European Beers, which it not typically what I would gravitate towards but I had a refreshing lager. While at the bar one of the bartenders was raving about their Sunday Brunch so I returned the next day for Brunch! The mimosas are a good size so that's a win! I had the Banana Fosters Pancakes which were huge and delicious. I think the bananas could have been cooked a bit more but aside from that everyone in my group was happy with their food. Service was great both times. I will definitely return again!

Steve M.

Yelp
Service was great. Very attentive and wonderful sense of humor. Food was fantastic. Had two appetizers wings and boa sandwich amazing. Beware of the ghost pepper sauce very good. And the endless bourbon whiskey and tequila list. Having a bourbon tasting flight would be a great addition to sample the many selections.

Yelp
Great food! Wonderful staff! Absolute grateful that we had family dinner there The music was on point and it was such a nice cozy spot! You can eat indoors or outdoors and in either area, the atmosphere was just great!

Yelp
First time visiting. Stopped in for a beer. Place was packed! Only 1 open seat at the bar with standing room. Beer selection is unique, not the usual... we had the Dunkle, it was very good! (Pictured in photo.) Staff was very nice. Looking forward to returning for the BBQ and also to enjoy the outside patio space in the warmer months. (Seats about 22 in the dining area and about 12 at the bar.) Cheers!
google avatar

Yelp
Staff was amazing. Extremely helpful with my allergy restrictions!! Music and atmosphere would make you go back and let's not forget to mention the food!! Definitely going back and recommending it to everyone!

James H.

Yelp
The food here was delicious. We had the Beast platter, 1/2 lb brisket, 1/2 lb pulled pork, 6 wings, 1/2 rack of some kind of delicious Korean ribs, 3 different sausages and ghost pepper tacos on the side. Don't be afraid of the ghost pepper dishes. The chef here knows how to add the heat and not over do it. IMO, anyone giving a bad review, just doesn't appreciate smoked BBQ.
google avatar

John S.

Yelp
Very nice, friendly service. The food was okay. Maybe a solid "C" if I were to use a traditional grading system. I hold to the Texas tradition that customers should be offered lean or marbly (flat vs. point) for brisket. Beast did not offer this and I was served only the fattier cut. Moreover, the meat had a hefty "bark" but there was very little smoke flavor. The menu mentions hickory (which is a stronger flavored wood) but I didn't taste it at all. (?) Like most BBQ restaurants in the Northeast (with only a handful of notable exceptions) this restaurant wouldn't pass muster with diehard 'cue fans. Nonetheless, this restaurant's vibe was relaxed and welcoming and the bar featured an exceptional array of brown liquors. Overall, Beast is a lovely, cozy joint for drinks with friends or a cocktail on a date night. They are relatively new and I wish them great success.

Yelp
The DBC owners do it again! We finally made it to the Beast and the experience was wonderful from top to bottom. They continue to deeply care about great service and creative and delicious food. Everything on the menu looked so good so we got the platter to split - it says for 3-4 people but it's def for the latter end. There were 3 of us who went with an appetite and we still took at least 2 servings home with us. We were also pleasantly surprised to learn it was happy hour when we arrived (3-5pm at bar and tables) so we got to enjoy 1/2 price house cocktails which are delicious. The beer selection is up there with the best also. The music and decor is witty (Walkens Welcome-legendary) and fun also. Love this place- cannot wait to be back to try the brunch now!!

Yelp
Went to the Beast recently with my wife, son and daughter in law . This was our first time there. Three of us got smoked brisket on a roll with curly fries and one had the pulled pork on a roll. also with fries. We all had specialty drinks. The food was a good B+ and the drinks were an A. The server was nice but the service was slow. The interior was ok but small, not many tables. Prices are average..... i would recommend the Beast and I am planning on going back.
google avatar

Katharine D.

Yelp
Delicious! Excellent barbecue, and some of the best smoked baked beans I've ever had. Loved the curly fries, too, and the vibes--chill, great music, and good service. Will definitely be back.
google avatar

Jeanine L.

Yelp
Food was delicious. I had the gyro with a side of kimchi slaw. Soo good, can't wait to come back

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Inventive, interpretation of southern BBQ. If you go for the "meals" expect to take food home. Sandwiches are more reasonably priced. Food is good - creative. Place is small so make reservations if you are a large party (5+). It's got a huge bar for the solo eaters and cocktails set. Good news is it's walking distance from 4 other restaurants of similar status so you can definitely get dinner in that part of town.

Anthony D.

Yelp
Great vibe, awesome beer selection, average BBQ. The brisket gyro sounded unique, however the flavors just did not go together. The tzatziki was a thick consistency with a predominately Greek yogurt-forward flavor rather than a creamy blended tzatziki of cucumber, garlic and dill that I am familiar with. The smoked wings didn't quite have the smokiness I imagined. Blue cheese however was awesome!
google avatar

Bill W.

Yelp
Great place! But a little small The food & portions were awesome the crowd was lively and upbeat the service was great. Only complaints - the place was kind of chilly it needs some heat. Also in the restroom was a laughably tiny garbage container. During our dinner I noticed some beautiful looking people so it's a great hot spot in my opinion. I noticed the servers saying "of course" to our every request.
google avatar

Momma V.

Yelp
Excellent service, not so good food. We had heard about this place from the radio when a couple dj's were discussing it on air. It sounded good and thought we'd give it a try. Outside was nearly full so we sat inside where it was pretty empty. Our server was fantastic. She had a great energy, was funny, and quick to get us anything needed. Unfortunately the food was just not good. We tried the brisket sandwich and half the brisket served was so burnt it couldn't be chewed or even cut with a knife. The kitchen replaced it but still failed with a chewy (but at least chewable) bland replacement. Tried the pulled pork sandwich. It too was a massive failure. It's a giant pile of pulled pork so dry it literally keeps the shape of the container it was dumped out of! Then it's topped with a dribble of bbq sauce and the world's driest, saltiest kimchi which in itself is a weirdly bad combination. The result is dry and salty leaving your mouth feel like a desert. I felt bad there was so much food left so I got a take out container but then realized no one in the house would eat it, so literally threw it in the trash as soon as we got home. The pork dish wasn't the only mixed up creation we tried . We ordered several other items, all flawed conceptually and in flavor but I don't want to drag this review out any longer. Trust me, skip this place.

Yelp
We were looking for a new brunch spot and since my boyfriend and I were off this Sunday we headed to Beast. The menu was limited but it had poached eggs with hollandaise sauce so that sold us. We walked in and took a seat at the bar, not one person acknowledged us. We actually joked that maybe we were invisible! Finally the bartender said hi and we ordered drinks. Ordered food but then was told they ran out of hollandaise... it was 1pm. The hours are 10 to 3 on Sundays.... how can you "run" out of something..how about make some more?? We ended up picking something else but probably should have left. The sausage gravy...no sausage. The biscuit...hard. The poached eggs were perfect but at that point it didn't matter. The pork sandwich was huge but the slaw needed to be chopped more. Overall we wouldn't go back, not worth it. Hopefully they work out the kinks and not rum out of items during a 5 hour brunch.

Sandra C.

Yelp
The worst thing a good bar can do is measure shots. Glass of wine was 5 ounces in a small glass for $10 and mixed drinks are 1 ounce in a tall glass. The place had a nice atmosphere, very clean, and staff was friendly. Menu is OK if you like barbecue, ruebens and beef brisket. not much else to choose from. I would highly recommend they stop measuring shots and give a decent drink. And if you're going to serve inexpensive wine, at least give a decent glass.

Robin P.

Yelp
First time at Beast tonight. What a wonderful place!!! Great food, kind and attentive staff and great drinks!!! Everything was delicious and can't wait to go back again!! Thank you for an amazing and relaxing dinner!!

Sam L.

Yelp
The food is next level good here. The Peruvian chicken is amazing. We went for brunch yesterday and ordered the BLT, smokehouse and pancakes. My whole family enjoyed every bite. The chicken wings are also the best chicken wings in town. We adore the staff and owners. Everyone is friendly and kind. It's small but has very cool vibe.

Tori A.

Yelp
Delicious food! Everything was great, service was great (not that we expected anything less we are super fans of dutchess biercafé) We loved the corn bread too. Id love to come back in the summer for outdoor dining!

Diana K.

Yelp
We decided to eat inside because it was humid and in the 90s that evening, but when we got inside the A/C was almost nonexistent and the air quite stuffy, the staff were all working up a sweat. The table area was small and crowded, but it was clean and modern. It took awhile to get our drinks, but unfortunately they didn't have any unsweetened iced tea. The appetizer was a tall pile of nachos in a small tray with refried beans and brisket, delicious but really messy. The Texas style brisket dinner was tender, juicy and delicious, but the Mac and cheese that came with it was starchy. The cappuccinos were served lukewarm, a disappointment. We never got the banana pudding that was ordered, we attributed it to the place being very noisy. The prices are decent and the portions generous. The one unisex bathroom was horrid, the floor was sticky and wet. The service is good, just a bit slow. We will go back, it will avoid hot days as well as not using the bathroom.

Camryn C.

Yelp
Was very excited to try this place. Was super hungry and despite the high prices, we were going to order a few things and try this new place out. Upon arriving we awkwardly stood at the door waiting to be told we could sit. There is no room at the door at all when you enter. If there was any more than 4 of us we would have had to stand in the open door way. Someone finally greeted us and said we can make our way to the corner table. The tables were so close together I had to side step through the tables and my butt STILL touched the top of some man's table as I was squeezing by.. awkward. We sat for a few minutes and finally someone came over and said "just so you know we are only serving happy hour food" and handed us a sheet of paper the size of a cocktail napkin with I believe three choices. 2 appetizers and a pulled pork sandwich. Then said "I have one pulled pork sandwich left" it was 4:30 and dinner menu started at 5. We would have waited but again we were so hungry and excited to eat a meal, we went elsewhere. I have never experienced being only allowed happy hour choices when not seated at the bar. I feel most people come to a restaurant and sit at the bar for a quick bite and drink, but at a table for an actual meal. Definitely disappointing but our server was kind and understood why we were leaving. Wish we could have tried the food but for the prices and the terrible ambiance .. I sure hope it would have been incredible tasting dishes.

Lee C.

Yelp
I live in town and was waiting to come check this place out. Popped in on Friday evening and the place was busy. Not much seating so the gentleman at the door said we could wait for 20-25 minutes for a table and stand to have a drink if we'd like, so we did. The music was very low, you could barely hear it. It would have been nice to have it a bit louder. The bar seats were taken so we stood up at the end and had a drink. Now 30 mins passes and no table. We were offered a seat at the bar and we were hungry so we took it. We ordered wings, kimchi, pernil, rice & maduros (sweet plantains). The wings and pernil wet cooked nicely and had a smoky flavor. The rice was very mushy and lacked flavor. Maduros should have a sweet flavor that lacked. I'd recommend eating the proteins but the sides not so much. Waitresses at the tables seemed friendly and attentive. Waitress at the bar was very dry and did not smile at all. I was hoping for a better experience. I've frequented the Bier Cafe which is the sister restaurant and have always had great service and food. I'm hoping it was just a bad night for them as it would be great to have another nice place to eat at in town. I'd like to give it another chance and maybe try brunch.
