Suburban Bars Temporarily Close After Patrons Threaten Staff Over Pandemic Policies | Eater Chicago

"After weeks of confrontations over masks, patio policies, and other pandemic-related rules, owner Ryan Tracy briefly closed Beer on the Wall to give his staff a few mental-health days; in a late-August Facebook post he detailed that employees had endured three complaints that COVID procedures were too strict, one that they weren't strict enough, a trivia host who was physically threatened, and two additional threats aimed at servers for enforcing a state- and municipal-mandated patio pet policy, and he asked customers to be nice to each other and his workers during a stressful time." - Naomi Waxman

Very nice bottle shop with a lot of good beers. They also have beer on draught, which is nice. They have inside and outside seating options

Great place, helpful beertenders! I stopped in to pick up a few Oktoberfest beers that I discovered they had via Untappd! Bottle shops like Beer on the Wall are perfect for when you don't want to buy a full 4-pack or 6-pack of something you want to try. And they have a good selection of beers on tap!

Beers, wines, whiskey, bourbon, you can find it here. There are so many different brands and good prices and almost 100 percent up charge for service if drinking inside. Not with whiskey, though. Bars with high chairs and tables in private sections. Will be back for more.

Visiting Beer on the Wall in Park Ridge offers a diverse and intriguing beer selection that tempts any craft beer enthusiast. With options ranging from light Lagers to robust IPAs and unique farmhouse drafts, there's a taste for every palate. The atmosphere is lively, and the setup with an outdoor patio adds to the allure, making it a potentially great spot for a sunny day. During my visit, the experience was a rollercoaster. The beers were generally excellent, each pour delivering a distinct and flavorful experience, scoring a solid 10/10 on the beer quality scale—until one misstep. One of the beers had a musky, underarm-like aroma, which was less than pleasant. When I requested a swap, the initial refusal from one staff member was disappointing. He should have offered a "taste" first before (which they do without charge). Fortunately, another team member was more accommodating, allowing me to exchange the off-putting beer for another. While the customer service was inconsistent, and some patrons seemed to have similar challenges with the bartenders, it's not enough to write this place off completely. The staff's eventual willingness to rectify the issue shows promise. However, prospective visitors might want to approach with a bit of caution—perhaps check the crowd and ask about the flexibility on beer swaps before diving in. Overall, Beer on the Wall has the potential to be a fantastic spot for beer lovers. Just be prepared for a possible hiccup or two, and don't hesitate to speak up if something isn't to your liking. It's not without its flaws, but it's certainly worth a visit for anyone looking to explore some unique brews in Park Ridge.

Google
Best beer shop in Chicago. Fantastic selection where you can buy single cans, growler fills and sampler drafts. Owner is amazing and stuff is extremely knowledge, friendly and fun to talk with. No mater where you live in Chicago, it's absolutely worth the trip out to Park Ridge

Beer On the Wall, shares a wall with Off the Wall cafe. Plenty of taps, pours, and just anything beer related, Beer On the Wall is your go-to for your alcoholic needs. They have a small seating area with a couch, and dining table, topped off with a classic 8-bit Nintendo to just hangout and sip on your beer. Everyone is super nice and friendly. BATHROOM REVIEW: If you like orange, this is the unisex bathroom for you. Super clean, super functional, and super pleasant. Sit or squat? Sit!

This is the Mecca of beer stores. What's really awesome is that they have a bar serving craft beer. . .So 10:05 AM, Saturday May 25, 2019, I ordered an IPA from the bar and then walked around to check out their imitable beer selection. Man, I was a kid in a candy store. I asked one of the staff a beer recommendation--I wanted to try at least one I've never had before--the first 5 she rattled off, I've had, but I knew she'd knew her beer, as they were all outstanding. She finally recommended some I haven't had, and she was spot on as I am currently on my back deck enjoying them. It took my a few minutes to figure out the arrangement, but it made logical sense when I figured it out. Beers aren't just arranged by style. For example your favorite local IPA may be on one part of the store but an IPA from say California would be in another. With the exception of singles (in case you want to take a road soda or two), the beer is not refrigerated, which is fine as their inventory obviously gets rotated frequently, ergo there beer is always fresh. Opportunity for improvement: I noticed for most people the hand-held baskets by the door were sufficient for their beer drinking needs, but I'm not most people. I drove quite a ways to get here , so I'm going to load up my trunk with delicious beer. I had to make 5 trips with the hand-held basket. . .So it'll be nice if they also had a shopping cart or two. I will damn sure make the pilgrimage here again. . .and again, and again, and again!

Wide choices of ales, IPAs, NAs, ciders, and even meads. A calendar of events is posted near the entrance that includes Trivia Night on Wednesdays! Nice place for a quick night out. Gonna go back and try the $12 flight.

Yelp
Stopped in here before a dinner down the street. I've heard good things about Beer on the Wall and I can understand why! The bartenders here are very welcoming and helpful. I enjoyed the few beers I had while here and they have a great selection of drafts, cold cans and to go packs. Very nice bottle shop/bar vibe with plenty of tables and comfortable sofas. I'll be back!

Yelp
This is a fantastic place. They have so many drinks to choose from and it's really fun to browse their selection. The shop has a lively and fun atmosphere and it's a great place to socialize. That being said, I thought being charged $4 per person to sit down and drink at the shop was a bit much. However, I really enjoyed my time here and will be back.

Yelp
They have beer. A lot of beer. They have flights for things on tap. Seating is pretty limited in the winter, but patio seating in the summer. Great service and nice employees! I will be back.

Yelp
Great atmosphere for a drink and the selection of beers good local hangout spot. Thank you.

Yelp
What a great find! The store looks small from the outside BUT it's large. Not only do they have a large beer selection but they also have a large selection of sours. Some of the beers available have unusual flavors like the cheddar broccoli. They have 17 beers on tab and you can order sample flights or by the glass. The staff is knowledgeable about the beers they sell.

Yelp
Stopped here during a pub crawl with friends. This was a great spot to grab a quick drink from one of the beers on draft, or pick up bottled or canned beverages to take home. Not feeling like a draft beer? You can buy a canned beverage and use the store's quick cooling tub. There's plenty of room for small groups and individuals alike. Challenge your friends to a few rounds of retro video gaming. There are a few locations in the Chicago area, and each is different. Regardless of which location you visit, Beer on the Wall is a great place to visit.

Yelp
I'm so glad I stopped in today and took a breather in this nice air conditioned place to have a beer. And buy an assortment of beers too. Love that they take orders online and have a table load of pickups ready. I was up for the adventure of finding things I drank before. Using this nice space to sit and chill and have a beer on tap is the best. Sure, if you have a crowd and have on sun screen sit outside. I believe normally there is reservations needed for sitting on the weekend, but this is a chill place and I totally won't bother with going to Binnys anytime soon. There cooler is a veritable candy store of chilled options yet breweries are ok with having their 4-6 packs of beer broken up so you can also pick out ones that aren't chilled to take home. Love that today I asked if there was any Maplewood and they pointed out the newest arrival. Just waiting for them to enter it in the system now.

Yelp
Great place! Knowledgeable staff(especially Eric). Amazing selection of beers. You can choose one of the 12 beers on tap. I like to get flights. You can get a single can/bottle from the fridge or pick one off the shelf and they will cool it. You can also buy 6 packBoard games too. No food but you can order from local restaurants. I love this place. Everyone is friendly. Kids are welcome. Come here- you will love it!!!! Even during COVID-19 this place is great. Just sat outside and enjoyed a flight and some signature cocktails from off the wall(the place next door). The CDC was good- chai daiquiri cocktail. Different but refreshing and a bit of alcohol in it! Love this place. You can order beer for pick up- which we have been doing the last few months. Everyone is so nice here and they really know their beer. They don't serve food but you can order from next door and sit here. Love this place!!!

Yelp
Great place with tons of different beer options! Their beer of the month club has been awesome and has helped us try new beers we maybe wouldn't have on our own. The staff is also super friendly. I also like how they have the chalkboard wall where you can buy people "gift cards" to redeem next time they are in. They aren't dog friendly inside, but their patio is. We come here weekly almost!

Yelp
The staff gives the proper head every time. I can do without the Vikings pride though. Minnesota sucks.

Yelp
Enjoyable spot in downtown Arlington Heights. During COVID, you can go up to their window and place your order then grab a seat outside. The entire street is shut down so people can socially distanced sit and relax with their beer. They had excellent beer choices including some I have never tried - a rare feat in the @hungrybeerchick world. My friend isn't a drinker and they had a bunch of options for her. I was shocked they had more than 1 or 2 non alcoholic beers. Such a pleasant surprise! The guy working was super friendly, seating outside was comfortable, just all in all a great experience. I'm going to suggest Beer on the Wall to all my brew loving friends in the area.

Yelp
Awesome place to hang around and drink beers with friends! Great selection of beer! They have a bar inside where you can order beers on tap. Outside seating too

Yelp
Amazing place. Knowledgeable staff. Great selections of all types of beer. A hidden gem!

Yelp
A haven for any craft beer enthusiast! Take home any single of the beers they've got in the store or hang around and grab a nice, cold beer on tap on a hot day. There's over 600+ beer and they've got their entire list with prices on Untappd. In the store, unfortunately, there aren't any prices marked so it's helpful to look at everything on Untappd before heading over. It's a great place with rare finds like Cigar City's Marshal Zhukov's and local brews from local breweries. The guys behind the bar are really knowledgeable and very friendly!

Yelp
Beer On The Wall is such a fun place and a breath of fresh air. You can go relax, have coffee or a beer, and play games with friends. They have a huge selections of beers and ciders, and even some wine. The fellow working was extremely knowledgeable and helped us select beers that he thought we would like based on our taste, and he wasn't wrong!
google avatar

Yelp
My personal go to for craft beers. If you like assorted craft beers, they have it all! Not so hidden anymore, but this place still rocks. Great service and ambiance.

Yelp
By the sound of the name, if you are thinking this to be like any other bar where you go get some drinks, order food and watch sports , sorry ...you are wrong :). To start with, yeah they have great abs variety selection of beer. If you are someone who dearly enjoy beer and experiment, this would be the place for you. Surprisingly they have various sizes/portions you could try starting with 4 Oz. And did I tell you that you can actually buy bottles/cans to take home. Though you don't get to experience watching sports in TV, you have a lot of options to choose from the board games you can sit and play ....and a classic Nintendo too :). This is a place where you can sit and relax with your group, play some games and have fun. Try open pretty early compared to a lot other places I.e 6:00 AM during weekdays. If you re thinking "Who wants to grab a beer that early" the grab a coffee .. yes they have that too. They don't serve any food although you can bring your own from outside and enjoy it while you drink. This is not your typical kind of bar, it's more than that. You will enjoy your visit !!

Yelp
Great selections of craft beers. Servers know their stuff. Great atmosphere to sit drink and talk.

Yelp
Went with my friend to the Beer On the Wall one time and totally love the place!!! We ordered cappuccino with croissants and tried their nachos. The plate was huge and delicious. It's perfect coffee shop with great selection of alcohol. Atmosphere is cozy and relaxing , stuff is prompt and friendly. It's very good quiet place to come with laptop to work. Now it's going to be our spot. Highly recommend!!!

Yelp
Love this place. So glad this is in park ridge. Great variety and service. Recommendations are spot on for this place. One draw back is there r not many spots at bar. But highly recommend a visit here

Yelp
I will preface this review by saying I need to go back... our visit was short because it was a bit crowded when we went. This place seems like the perfect place to shop and drink at the same time. There are various seating areas spread out throughout the store, intermixed between all the beer. The beer selection is on point here with great craft options (and some hard to find options too). They also offer a few options on tap, and you can do a flight of 4 for $10 it sounded like. I was all game to do that, but the place was just a little too crowded when we got there, plus there were Girl Scouts selling cookies inside the place, which took up some of the available seating. But kudos to BOTW for using the opportunity to do a beer and cookie pairing! So clever! We ended up just taking a few options to go. The shop worker was super nice and taped each one up individually with paper and then offered to let us have a sample if we wanted too. I want to come back to fully experience this place sometime soon in the future!

Yelp
Want to go to a bar and try interesting stuff? Need to stop and grab a 6 pack for the weekend? THIS PLACE DOES BOTH. AMAZINGLY WELL. I tried this spot about a year ago from an urging from my cousin. It quickly became one of my favs. I figure I have come here about once a week for about a year and can FINALLY write an honest review. This is why: 1. They have hard to find craft beer and wine. Even better, they let you buy singles, they will even chill one down for you to enjoy it there. Craft beer is pricey, and this lets you try one before taking a whole 4 or 6 pack home and discovering you don't love it. They also have 12 rotating taps with anything from stouts to ipas to meads and ciders. 2. The atmosphere is inviting, clean, lively, and engaging. The staff is friendly and no beer-snob attitude. I've overheard several conversations with the staff recommending brews to people that are new to the style, (including myself sometimes) and I've never found them to be undermining or dismissal. SOLID. They have games, a comfortable old-school video gaming area, great wifi and ample seating. So if you are one of those work from home types, this is your place. 3. Events. They host several events from brewery guests to gaming nights. Usually several times per week. 4. They opened a coffee/wine bar next door with atypical selections under the same model as the beer side. 5. Price. Great prices. I've seen beer at other places for double. 6. They are opening an Arlington Heights location soon, so even better. The owner has a great business here, and it's great to see them grow. CHECK IT OUT. Everybody I have reco'd Beer On The Wall to has become a big fan.

Yelp
Amazing beer selection! Love that they have a chiller too so you can have any can of beer at the tap room! Staff is very friendly as well

Yelp
LAME. I walked in with my cute little 6lb dog (no sign on the door saying dogs not allowed) was there long enough to select what I wanted and this lady comes out and tells me to leave because dogs aren't allowed. I said "sorry, can I just grab this and go?" and she refused service and said we had to go outside. I get it if you don't allow animals but put a sign up and don't let people walk around for 5 minutes before you say something. At that point you could've sold the beer and gave a future reference if you wanted to be nice to a customer. Whatever, Itchy and I don't wanna spend money on that kind of treatment anyway.

Yelp
Brilliant. Why there are not more places like this, I cannot understand. The only thing like it that I've ever come across was in Oxford, Mississippi a couple of years ago. That outfit had the "coffee shop for beer" format, but Beer on the Wall adds a bottle shop for maximal effectiveness. It's practically perfect. First, you have the coffee shop setup, with a diverse range of seating options: sit at the bar and chat with the proprietor; relax on the couch with a book; occupy the dining-type tables to play a board or card game. Second, you have the draft beers, in three different sizes (this is a huge plus). And finally, you have the bottle shop, which offers a very satisfying range of domestic craft brews and a handful of imports. Besides the standard six- and four-packs on the shelves and in the coolers, you can also build your own (another major check-mark in my book). The owner/operator can speak at length about the draft beers and will make all kinds of recommendations for the takeaway stuff. PLUS, you can bring your own food. They thought of everything! The only possible sort-of criticism that I can make is that there are "only" eight drafts, and on my first visit the range was kind of narrow (two IPAs and two double IPAs for example) and one of them was out. That place in Mississippi had a couple dozen. Ah, a lad can dream. So basically this joint becomes my #1 local option for the two main beer-consuming scenarios--sitting down to enjoy a few drinks in a social setting and taking some home (or to a gathering elsewhere). I never need to go anywhere else.

Yelp
What can I say? I am a beer snob and live this place to death. Get selection and know leg staff. Hi hang out and have a good time!
google avatar

Yelp
Cannot explain how much I love this suburb find! Came here to work on our laptops and try some new beers. Very pleasantly surprised! The bartender/cashier was so helpful + friendly. The ambiance and atmosphere is very coffee shop with adult beverages. Love love love! Definitely coming back.

Yelp
This place deserves all of the 5-star ratings that it's getting. This is such an amazing addition to uptown Park Ridge. When it first opened I thought it would be mostly a place to drop in and select a six-pack or two of craft beer, but it's become much more than that. After dropping in on a Saturday night, I'd describe it as a casual hang-out place to enjoy a craft beer or two, visit with other locals, and learn (and bring home) some interesting beer selections. It's a welcome change from other options for going out for a beer; it's more relaxed and friendly, and quiet enough for conversation.
google avatar

Yelp
Beer On the Wall is such an amazing part of the community. Even as someone who prefers whiskey over beer, I absolutely love it for many different reasons. First of all, the owner and staff are all great people, super knowledgeable and welcoming. You can tell that they're in business to fulfill a passion and it shows. Their selection of craft beers is the best in the area and they're always bringing in hard to find beers from some of the top breweries. They also have a selection of liquors too, but unfortunately they only have a beer license so you can't drink any liquor on site. The icing on the cake is that they also have coffees and teas for the non-beer drinkers, especially during the daytime when you need a spot to work from. Beer On the Wall is definitely a gathering place for the community, it's a kid friendly spot and it's my favorite spot in the area.
google avatar

Ted M.

Yelp
Fantastic selection!! If you need advice, it's available, although recommender may have different palate than you. Most of them are relatively knowledgeable *for their generation*. And beyond that, there are some PHENOMENAL ales on tap and fantastic bottle-aged stuff on the shelves. If you are not looking for something extraordinary, you still can have a blast here between nice ppl, DOGS, games, ale, etc - they also have some tamer ipa's on tap Love this place! Have fun! Maybe you'll catch me here!
google avatar

Garrett L.

Yelp
Great selection of beverages, friendly bartenders that are filled with good suggestions (eric shared one during this visit ) chilled clean atmosphere, not crazy crowded, and the fact you can buy and/or drink beverages is nice . Pricing is what I would expect. I will be back .
google avatar

Kimberly S.

Yelp
I don't even like beer and I love this place. It is like a little oasis in Park Ridge that doesn't seem Park Ridgy (hope that stays the same). I even found a beer that grew on me. They also have ciders for people like me. The selection is great and the seating invites people to be friendly and talk to strangers. You can even bring your kids along...which seems kinda wrong but people do!
google avatar

Matt P.

Yelp
Beer on the Wall has a nice, relaxing atmosphere and a huge selection of beers. I'm not much of a beer snob, so I wasn't very adventurous, but you definitely could be if you wanted to. I love the fact that there is a vintage Nintendo system available for playing and that the place is quiet enough to actually have and hear a conversation with your friends. I love Harp and Fiddle next door, but it's way too loud sometimes. Although I haven't done this yet, I love the idea of coming to Beer on the Wall to play a board game and have a brew. The only downside is the 9 p.m. closing time on weeknights. I think that has something to do with the liquor laws in Park Ridge, but it's kind of annoying to have to leave after an hour when you arrive at 8 p.m.
google avatar

Carolyn T.

Yelp
There is a reason Beer on the Wall has five stars! This is such a solid spot in suburban Park Ridge, and it will definitely be on my list of places to return (I'm not often a repeat establishment visitor). My friends and I enjoyed a fabulous afternoon here drinking and playing board games. The atmosphere is really cozy and hip. The decor in general is sort of "Instagrammable." You'll get what I'm saying when you go there. ;-) They have a great selection of beers (including a freezer and a few aisles filled with drinks to bring home for later). I opted for the nitro iced coffee and it was VERY potent. I spent hours nursing it because the caffeine and overall taste were so strong. My friends enjoyed drinking beer, as well as the coffee. I'm so glad my friend introduced me to this spot, and now I figured I needed to do the service of introducing it to you! ETA: We didn't have to bring our own board games. They have a great selection there for you to play!
google avatar

Oscar M.

Yelp
Great spot in Park Ridge! They have great selection of beers to take home and on tap. The place is super chill and fun to hang out at with their couches and old school video games. But the best part is the staff; they are friendly and super knowledgeable. Their recommendations were spot on the last time I stopped by. Looking forward to going back again.

Kileen C.

Yelp
Absolutely love this place! Such a great time even with kids in tow and such great service!

Yelp
Amazing selection of rotating drafts! Great place to relax! Love the local breweries represented.

Yelp
Really enjoy shopping here. Staff is as much of a draw as the beer selection. And don't forget the dark matter coffee and other goodies next door!

Yelp
I absolutely love this shop/bar & am thrilled it is pretty close to home. I have only been to a few craft beer stores, but this one is by far the best. The best of both worlds: drink great draft picks that rotate frequently and/or take one of the many, many excellent picked bottles or cans to go. We even bought a bomber, opened it & poured it in plastic cup to take outside for the beer festival the other day. Not only is this idea of drinking in or taking out grand, but the selection is exquisite. Speaking from one who has witnessed hundreds & hundreds, maybe thousands of different craft beers, this selection really is the bee's knees. I have seen multiple beers here that I haven't seen anywhere else. Not to mention the video & board/bored games. There were kids playing old school Nintendo the other day. I'm pretty sure you can bring food here, which is a great privilege. They have about 7 or 8 drafts & I think I remember an employee telling me they switch one out about every other day or so. Each time I have gone in there are completely different beers on draft/draught(?). Huge space, too. Several tables/chairs in back with seating at the bar, maybe six seats, and more lounging in front. This place is basically just super hip & awesome. Wish I lived right behind it.
google avatar

Yelp
This place is the highlight of my move to PR ! Side note, this is a sampling place, not a bar. The owner, Ryan and the other employees here (Ken) are fantastic, knowledgeable about all the different varieties of beer and alcohol, and I believe they are the reason behind the huge success of this spot. It's always bumping whenever I'm here, family friendly, they have a corner for board/video games, and if you're unsure of what to drink, they also offer beer flights. They have such a great selection of beer, and if you are a beer fanatic, this place is a must !!!
google avatar

JIm L.

Yelp
My family LOVES Beer on the Wall. Great drafts that rotate frequently, great selection of beer for sale, especially from the local breweries. The staff is beer bearded passionate about craft brews. You can try any beer on the wall, they will ice it for you. But the hangout is its best feature. My wife and I bring the kids, we play UNO, Scrabble, or other games. There is no TV distracting from spending time talking and enjoying a flight of different beers or ciders. Bring in food from home or a nearby restaurant and you are in grazing in clover brother. A great place to read or write in quieter hours.
google avatar

Andy M.

Yelp
A snotty Park Ridge version of a liquor store and since they live in-and-in league city they get something nice like this business. This place has many craft fair choosings and coffee but make no mistake it is promarily a carry put liquor store. They may have some comfortable furniture but the place os small and it's cramped and it is a liquor store with yuppies from Park Ridge. There is nothing special of this place
google avatar

Peter ..

Yelp
Great place to enjoy a wide selection of craft beers! Visited them on their grand opening day and the employees are knowledgeable and passionate about beer. Enjoyed a glass of Sang Noir, which is a cherry sour beer available on tap. The fact that they have sour beer on tap, which is really rare at bars, shows great commitment to carrying a diverse selection of products. Highly recommend to stop by for a glass and pickup a pack to-go.
google avatar

David N.

Yelp
Probably my favorite bar. They have a small selection on tap, a good selection in a cooler, and a massive selection on shelves. They will chill any beer you pick if it is warm however. My only complaint is the chill it in a bucket of ice as opposed to a rapid cooler. The place is very friendly and comfortable with no music. Instead they have a original Nintendo and Nintendo Wii. Additionally they have a good selection of board games to play. Everything from simple games like Uno and Cards Against Humanity to Ticket to Ride and Catan. This is a great place for a group of friends to go hang out and have fun. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Cathy H.

Yelp
Since my last review was posted I came back on a Saturday afternoon and played some Nintendo. It was awesome! There were lots of people here, but not too many, and the Nintendo was so much fun. I'll definitely be back.

Yelp
Finally, Park Ridge is coming out of the 50's. BotW is welcome addition to some of the new places in downtown PR. Excellent selection of drafts to try, and a very well thought out selection of bottles and cans to take home. The owner and staff are willing to talk beer all day to make sure you get something to your taste. This can only get better as they mature, add taps and new selections. Now, if only PR would move the library and sell the parcel to a developer, build a parking garage and retail/restaurant space........
