The 38 Best Restaurants in Indianapolis, Indiana

"Open for: DinnerPrice range: $$$$Coming off the success of the award-winning brunch-only Milktooth, chef Jonathan Brooks teamed up with business partner and sommelier Josh Mazanowski to open Beholder in 2018. Housed inside a repurposed garage, the dinner-only restaurant offers “sexy, delicious food.” Brooks focuses his energy on Indiana’s agriculture and traditions, with high-end variations on Indiana’s pork tenderloin, a pan-fried walleye, and fried local smelt and fries. Mazanowski ups the ante with a hand-selected global wine list to pair with the Midwest flavors.Know before you go: Reserve a seat at the chef’s counter to get a view of the kitchen in action." - Brian Garrido

Took over 45 min just to get a drink. We did the tasting menu and the oysters were so doctored up with mignonette sauce you couldn’t actually taste the oysters themselves. Steak was great but the salmon was pretty mid. Ice cream was really good! Would give a better rating if service was better

As an international traveler that seeks out exceptional food experiences, I can tell you this is a place worth your attention in Indianapolis. Will, our server, was both knowledgeable and engaging. He was resourceful to ensure that our meal was gluten free. We enjoyed the tasting menu with the wine paring. If you have an elevated palate and enjoy fantastic ambiance, I'd encourage you to make a reservation!

Google
One of the best restaurant and cocktail bars in Indianapolis. Craft cocktails were a 10 out of 10, perfectly balanced with “oh wow” flavors and stunning presentation. Food and as equally as good. Oysters were amazing and the miso glazed hamachi colors were hard to eat but beyond amazing. The wagyu flank steak with mushroom was also incredible. The fried rice chicken wings were as delicious as it was fun to eat. Can’t wait to go back.

Beholder is a dining experience like no other. From the moment you glance at the menu, you realize that this restaurant embraces bold and unexpected flavors. The ingredients used in their dishes will surprise even the most adventurous eaters. One standout dish was the pasta with anchovy sauce—unlike anything I’ve tasted before. The rich, umami-packed sauce added a depth of flavor that was both intriguing and satisfying. For those with dietary preferences, Beholder offers a variety of vegetarian options that are just as creative and thoughtfully prepared. The drink selection is another highlight. Each beverage complements the uniqueness of the food, enhancing the overall experience. For those who prefer not to drink alcohol, the restaurant offers non-alcoholic wines, a rare and welcome touch that ensures everyone has a special pairing for their meal. Beholder is a must-visit for food lovers looking to step outside their comfort zone and explore flavors in a way they never have before. The creativity in every dish makes it a place worth returning to.

Google
Came for the special - which always rocks - but left floored by the duck egg and chartreuse ice cream. The texture and softness, flavor, and the finish of flaky salt, seriously was a top 3 ice cream I’ve ever had and ice cream is really the only sweet I do, so I have lots of experience. That being said, the special on Wednesday and Thursday is an incredible way to experience a James Beard nominated restaurant at an unbeatable value, but you have to go for a full meal sometime too because the entire experience is another level. Great service and environment always too, there’s a reason this is one of the very best restaurants in the city.

I want to share my experience that will tell you what kind of place this is and what kind of person chef Jonathan Brooks is. First off, the food is the best in Indiana, there is really no comparison so i will not go into each dish so much... in December i had the pleasure of eating at Beholder for the first time and i mentioned to Chef Brooks that my 11 yr old son was at Riley's Children's Hospital following a horrific car wreck. My son was ejected from the car after rolling over and over and almost died. Upon hearing this, Chef decided to send some of their ice-cream with me to take to my son. My son LOVED it! he had been in the hospital for two months at that point, and the ice-cream made his month! Finally, after another month my son was released and the first place he wanted to go was Beholder. They treated my son like a celebrity from the time he entered the restaurant until the time he left. Chef Brooks personally brought my son many different dishes for him to try. Needless to say, my son loved the attention and he has a very sharp pallet, so loved Chef Brooks food even more. Chef Brooks is Indiana's only celebrity chef and he is an even better person. Chef did not have to do any of the things he did, but he made my son smile and feel after months of pain and sadness, chef made my son happy, like i had not seen since before the accident. As a father, that meant a lot to me. Keep up the amazing work! You are producing the best food out there and touching lives while doing it. which, i assume is why you got into this business to begin with. i just wanted to let you and your staff know that you touched our lives and we will be lifelong patrons. thank you again!

Google
This was an amazing experience. The staff was friendly and great. The menu is creative. The food was delicious. We tried the tasting menu to experience a little bit of everything. They also have an a la carte menu. The ice cream is also amazing. Beholder is one of our new favorites and we will return.

Google
By far the best restaurant in Indianapolis. Privately owned restaurant with amazing creative kitchen with changing menu all the time. Sitting at the chefs counter is my favorite. The kitchen crew as well as the service is amazing and fun. Wine list is not huge but very nice wines. Love to be there! Pictures are from several visits from the last months.

Yelp
TL;DR: SO. GOOD. EAT. HERE. Ordered: - Oysters: delicious and fresh. I forget which ones but they were perfectly balanced between briny and sweet - Cabbage salad: wow this was a sleeper. The crispiness of the cabbage and the crunchiness of the toppings played so well together. - Steak and mash: Nothing spectacular but can't go wrong at all - McRib special: I loved that Beholder's take on the McRib was so heavy on onions and pickles. That said, if that's not your thing, maybe skip Gotta love a restaurant that serves nice plates but keeps you grounded with shot and a beer combos to remind you of your roots Will 100% be back to hit the tasting menu Cheers, Beholder!

Yelp
It's interesting to see something along the lines of fine dining on 10th street but even more impressive once you walk in. The vibe is quaint, super cool that you can see the kitchen while you're seated. Drinks were amazing, one of the best cocktail menus out there for sure. I went burger but wish I had not. The menu is fairly simple they give you only so many options but each has its own execution. Burger had a literal inch slice of cheese on it and a large amount of pickled onions on it. Different but I think it overwhelmed the burger. Fries were overcooked, not very enjoyable tbh. Overall the experience was positive so will probably be back to give them another shot and maybe not get the burger.

Yelp
Beholder has a great ambiance with solid food, but may not be worth it at the price point. The highlight of the night was the burger which was perfectly cooked and high quality. May be the best thing on the menu and is a must order. The Kohlrabi Caesar salad was a fresh interesting take on a Caesar salad but left much to be desired at the $15 price point. The chicken quarter and the cereal milk tres leche were both good, but not anything special. For how much Beholder is recommended and how nice the ambiance is, left a little disappointed and expecting more. However the burger saved the night and with a constantly rotating menu, I'm sure there will be new creative high quality dishes to check out in the future.

Yelp
We stopped in here for dinner early last Friday after catching a late afternoon movie at Kan-Kan. We snagged one of the last 2 tables that weren't booked from a reservation and got our order in before the rush, so it was perfect timing! The restaurant has quite a few different sections, but we sat in the furthest left area of the restaurant that faces one of the entrances to Woodruff Place. They have a lot of fun artwork on the walls, the one right across from us I kept imagining were sisters playing mermaids together lol We each started off a with a cocktail (I got a French 75, he got a sazerac) and shared the broccolini salad. It was so fresh and flavorful! My husband felt the garlic was a little over powering, so he left most of his off, but I loved it. For mains, I ordered the KFC- Korean Fried Quail and OMG. The portion was huge- I was not expecting a whole quail, it was definitely very filling. The kimchi was sososo good, but I wish there had been more of it. I would 100% order this again if it was still on the menu when we went back, but it was so good that I would also be torn to try another amazing dish. My husband ordered the patty melt and it was juicy, tender, and came out on very fresh bread. The french fries were crispy and were nicely salted. I also got a glass of their sparkling (only one option) to drink with dinner and it was the perfect amount of bubbles and touch of sweetness. For dessert we ordered the Meyer lemon ice cream and the burnt banana w/ Parmesan and honey. The Meyer lemon was very fresh, tart and tangy. The burnt banana was on another level. I would have never thought those flavors and textures would pair so perfectly and I was so happy we opted to try that flavor over the cranberry walnut. The Parmesan was so finely grated that it melted in your mouth and added just enough savory to balance the burnt banana flavor, with the honey really bringing it all together. We also each got a pour of the Madeira Bual 1987 and overall it was just a perfect little dessert. The staff were all very friendly and were always making sure we had our waters full and empty dishes/silverware removed from the table. The bathrooms were very clean as well. Beholder turned our late afternoon movie into an upscale date night and I would definitely come back here again.

Yelp
My oh my, now I know why everyone raves about this place. I came for the first time during Devour week and it was everything I dreamed of and more! I love the quirky decor and the cool layout. It's divided between 2 sections and there are endless seating options (bar, high top table, bistro table, large tables for big parties). I got 2 different cocktails and both were amazing. We did the devour menu and I got the grilled Caesar (yum), the walleye (so juicy and amazing), and the pancake ice cream (I'm a sucker for ice cream). All of it was incredible and I love that the menu changes often. I love an innovative menu and this place does it perfectly! My only negative would probably be the wait times. I stood at the check in for about 15 minutes before someone came up to greet me. The courses are timed out to where you're waiting for your next step. It's definitely a place to sit and enjoy your extended time! Great date night, special occasion, or just because! I also met John Green when I was there, so bonus points for that!

Yelp
Cute place near Woodruff. Wouldn't notice it if you didn't know, but it's super vibey. Atmosphere is on point. Service is A+. Every course we got was awesome. There were no duds. I am not an oyster person, and even the oysters were great. Cocktail list was great. Overall stellar, would go back and definitely recommend!

Yelp
Absolutely terrible experience. I've been here once before and all the food was overly salty and then I gave them a second chance and they canceled my reservation last minute.

Yelp
Good food and service, weird ambiance. It was our first visit, dined at 5:30 on a Saturday night (our 10 year old with us and noted that in our reservation) and were seated in a small front area so we never saw the rest of the restaurant. Bummer. Assuming we were sat there because we had a minor with us? But it was such a small, crowded space with no music. There were 2 other tables sat just 2-3 feet away from us. The food was good but we've certainly had better portions, quality and experience for a $300 check. I can't say enough about how awesome the service was so this was no fault of the service staff! Just left feeling unimpressed by the restaurant itself.

Yelp
I am obsessed with this place. Granted, I've only been 3 times in the past 2 years but I think about it all the time. The most recent visit was at the end of May. As always, the ambiance is very "cool" feeling with different seating locations That give you a different experience. Sometimes, they have a DJ but always playing good tunes. We got to sit at the bar that overlooked the chefs cooking, which is always an automatic win for me. So cool to see them doing their thing. We went on a weekday so they were busy enough yet not slammed. we got to chat with the manager for a little while about our cocktails and wine. The wine menu is incredible. We got some cocktail with verde chile in it and we loved it. Got the oysters, papaya salad, burger and the fish. So delicious. I really want to try the pasta rags with wagyu.

Yelp
Finally made it here after hearing so much about it from a friend! Did not disappoint! Started with the oysters and BBQ pork belly, finished with the hyped up burger and fries. Lots of unique drink options, but went with the special, Pickle Backs! Very cool vibe and hip decor. Bartender was great and service was excellent. Everyone was very friendly!

Yelp
Administrative notes - for being a James Beard semi-finalist (them), and wine enthusiast (me), I cannot believe it took me 3 months of living in Indy before meeting a stranger at another restaurant before finding this place on referral. Perhaps that's why they weren't packed on a Saturday when I rolled in? Bios on the website read like a desperate resume, when there's obvi some street cred earned. This review is shared in collegial love. Vibe is very nice with the space provided. Lots of little nooks and a warm bar. Bartender was edgy about my request for a few samples of wine, although their program is one of the only spots in Indy where you can sit down and order some beautiful glasses from France, Italy, Spain, and beyond. I've been looking for this type of menu ever since I landed here - a diamond among gems! I tried the tasting menu and was a bit disappointed the food didn't follow the same caliber of delivery. Started strong with the Pink Moon Oysters balanced with some warming nduja (Italian herbed sausage) oil, citrus, and mignonette. Not everyday an oyster is as original as this one! The Ora King Salmon Crudo was very fresh & served in a generous portion, lots of things going on that ended up tasting like salmon sashimi in salsa with too much chip on top. Appreciate the concept, but the flavors just didn't work out. Working towards the main, the carrots were cooked to a perfect al dente crisp, lightly glazed & topped with toasted pine nuts, however; wish they had stopped there because the apricot purée (though tasty on its own) did not compute texturally or flavor-wise. Finished with the Iberico Secreto Steak - some of the most delicately tender pork I've enjoyed, however! It was sadly under salted and drowned in oil, so I kept digging into the "salsa verde" hoping for more flavor but got more oil, weighing things down. Josh was a breath of fresh air in the bar, serving up beautiful craft cocktails with some rare finds whether you're looking for bourbon, mezcal, whiskey, gin, cordials and beyond. My ultimate takeaway is that Indy is in quite the predicament with establishments such as these - they're not quite exemplary enough to make the list and compete with neighboring cities like Cincy and Chicago, but after some minor tweaks, might keep the house packed for the small but growing clientele in Indy. There's also the ongoing challenge to overcome Indy's market preference for the known, the familiar, even the chain. To that I would recommend keeping some staples on the menu - we might agree to enjoying Chef's favorites (soon to become our own) each time we return. I'll be interested to see what has changed (and what has stayed the same) next time I visit.

Yelp
Definitely glad we dined here, as it has been on our list for a while, but personally probably won't be back for food. We sat in the area with the bar and it was really cool the ambiance of the place is 10/10. Drinks were great but food wasn't as great for the price in our opinion.

Yelp
Have dined here three times. I always fall in love with at least one of the dishes, while others are just good. The second visit we ordered a crudite plate for the table and it was stellar. That was years ago and I still think about it. I mean... it was raw veggies but the accompaniments were so yum. The latest visit was for our anniversary and the salad (again, veggies) blew me away! See my picture of this amazing brown butter radish salad. The kitchen eliminated the bread crumbs to accommodate my allergy, but it was amazing without it. The sherry vanilla ice cream.... omg... omg... just o.m.g. I wanted to buy a gallon of it and take it home to eat the next day. Why not five stars? While the menu is inventive and I feel pleasantly surprised by how much I like my food, it isn't consistently amazing. It's also salty. After each visit I retain water (I have an inner ear disease that is set off by sodium) and I can taste that some items are way too salty. Still this is one of my favorite spots. Hubs always likes the cocktails here too.

Yelp
Beholder is for the cool kids and Johnathan Brooks is an icon! They have a seasonal carpaccio we can't stop thinking about. Yes their daily menu is incredible, but their weeknight specials have our heart. They're know to offer a burger, sandwich, Crunchwrap, etc with fries and beer for $20-$25 and it makes for the perfect mid-week treat.

Yelp
Nice little spot off of 10th near downtown. Lots of murals and Knick knacks in the place which add a fun element to the interior. (Apparently there's been mural controversy....hah) Phenomenal service. We sat at the chefs counter and got to watch them cook and plate all of the dishes. Neat experience. All the chefs and waiters were extremely attentive and nice! We started with the scallop crudo and the eggplant tartare. The scallop crudo was other worldly. If I went back I may just order 5 of those. The eggplant parm was served with a fry bread and together they packed so much flavor! For our mains we did the spaghetti and the halibut. I normally wouldn't order spaghetti anywhere but this broke the mold for what spaghetti normally is. Bright and delicious. The halibut was served with some clams and boy was that dish amazing. I'm going back soon to maybe try the tasting menu with the wine pairings. Or maybe get 3 scallops and a halibut? Who knows.

Yelp
I suppose now that I've dined here on 120 or so occasions it's time to update my review of Beholder. Beholder is the best restaurant in Indiana. There's no debate, that's an objective fact. No one else in the state is so constantly creative and skilled at delivering mind-altering cuisine that never stops surprising and delighting. The menu is always changing, offering wild original takes on the theme of the moment; one night you might have a seasonal take on French bistro, the next a gourmand's version of junk food, or Creole, or Spanish... Tonight I went for the A5 wagyu, which melted like butter in my mouth, pepperoni carrots with a nug of burrata, and fresh-shucked oysters in a perfect mignonette. Last time, I had chef's version of a McDonald's Filet-O-Fish with a beer and a shot. So many amazing choices. Speaking of which, the wine list is too good! They have the most interesting, hip, curated wine selection in the city and they're experts at helping you choose the perfect bottle. Cocktail game is super strong too. Lots of creative riffs on classics, and some innovative house creations too. Add to all the the ace staff, hip re-purposed garage vibe, and those sexy bathrooms, and you got yourself a spot I find myself going at least once a week. One last thing! I'm normally not a dessert person, but I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this: it's not always on the menu, do yourself a favor and order the grilled banana ice cream with Parmesan.

Yelp
Love this spot for celebrating milestones, a night out for good drinks, and even just a local weeknight special. Some of the food options can be simple dishes played up with naming conventions, but it's mostly great food done really well. The savory ice cream options are always amazing! We are huge fans of the weekly Wednesday/Thursday specials, especially when they include a cocktail pairing. To top it off, the bar has its own replica of Frostmourne! Can't hate on a place that is a Warcraft fan!

Yelp
Pretension without cause. Portions very small. Overpriced. Server w/o a personality. Big disappointment.

Yelp
TLDR: Had the tasting menu at Beholder last night. Four courses. I liked three out of the four dishes. The salad, black cod, and dessert were delicious. Service was friendly but a bit disorganized. Nice wine and cocktail list. If I lived here, I'd likely be a regular at the bar for the ala carte menu. -- Went to Beholder last night with two friends. The three of us had the tasting menu. We enjoyed a bottle of Schug Carneros Estate Winery Cabernet with dinner after starting with a glass of prosecco. I like the look and feel of the restaurant. All of the staff were very friendly. First course: ceviche with chips. House made tortilla chips were delicious. While I love spicy food, the hot peppers used in the ceviche overpowered the dish and I could not discern between each ingredient (i.e. fish or vegetable?). My least favorite dish of the dinner. Second course: Little gem lettuce salad with green goddess dressing. I love little gems and this was one of the best salads I've ever had in my life. We all agreed at the table it was absolutely delicious. Fresh lettuce with creamy dressing. Third course: I had grilled ribeye which was cooked perfectly and very tender. However, the star of the show was the black cod with lions mane mushrooms. I *hate* mushrooms or I would have gotten it. The black cod was melt in your mouth delicious! Fourth course: Strawberry with an absinthe cream. Fresh berries and a delicately sweet cream that was touched with the funky bite of absinthe. It was delightful. While all the staff were friendly, it felt a bit chaotic and we had to wait considerable time to often get our table bused, which is a pet peeve of mine. I also wish the food runner would have explained what our dishes were. He'd drop it off and say "Black cod" and leave. As a result, we would all read the tasting menu out loud so remind ourselves of the details of each dish. It was a bit too casual of a vibe for what is presented as a beautiful fine dining experience, IMHO. Weird observation: everyone working there last night was a guy. I don't know why I noticed, but, everyone appeared to be a man who works there. I thought that was kind of funny. However, if I lived in Indianapolis I'd like be a regular at the bar. The a la carte menu is nice and I liked the wine and cocktail list. The friendly bartender was a bonus. Overall, a decent experience but if you're looking for a super high end service experience, understand that Beholder is a bit more casual. I think the cost of the tasting menu at $89 is a great value.

Kay E.

Yelp
A nice cozy venue with some unique menu options. I enjoyed the puttanesca pasta with lamb&pork but it would have been nice to have a piece of garlic bread with it.My lemon drop martini was tasty and the servers were attentive and friendly.

Yelp
Had the most foodie dinner I've had in Indy ! The food , service and ambiance was perfect . Everything was inventive , the oysters , mushroom tartine and lamb are must tries. Save room for dessert because their nice creams were so unique and delicious ! A perfect evening !

Yelp
Enjoyed our experience here. Nice ambiance and good service! Good pacing on the timing of the dishes. The wings and mushroom étouffée were the highlights for us. Seasoned perfectly with well balanced heat. I'd love to see a bit more creativity from their cocktail and dessert menus. In all really enjoyed our experience and will be back.

Yelp
What a great place for date night. We sat at the chef's counter and was excited to see the action in the kitchen. The pork and rabbit lumpia was crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Octopus dish reminded me of Spain and was just perfect. The pasta rags was my favorite entree with fava beans and melting summer squash. The beef was braised wagyu tongue. Pan roasted halibut has delicious potato hash and fresh snap peas. The horseradish shaved on the top was just the right accompaniment. The last dish we added was the Iberico pork and I'm so glad we ate it. Pork was cooked perfectly. Such a great dinner. Can't wait to visit again.

Yelp
Avoid... Mediocre food masquerading as fine dining... another high priced joint preying on those who don't have time to leave Indy often. The food itself is *not bad* but its terrible for the money and the menu is littered with pretentious vernacular trying to pretend it deserves a Michelin star. If I had to make a local heads up comparison, I'd say its closest comparable is Pier 48... the menu is actually quite similar if you strip out all the culinary BS in the titles & descriptions. Compare their menus and you'll get a chuckle... compare their food heads up and you'll probably frequent P48 more often than Beholder. Ambiance is basically a darker version of its sister restaurant, Milktooth but in a newly gentrified corner of the city (across from a Family Dollar). My girlfriend and I have been on 2 occasions and decided previous reviewers were distracted by their accredited wine menu and the hipster service / line cooks.

Yelp
Our "treat yo self" go to restaurant! We always end up sharing all the dishes and trying new handcrafted cocktails each time! Nothing disappoints! The gator boots cocktail is an all time favorite! Also, their mushroom dishes are always incredible. We've started going for the specials once a month too and they are always creative and seasonal!

Yelp
Is Beholder an expensive Indy restaurant?... yes, but they also offer some of the most unique and amazing flavor combinations I've had at any restaurant. If you're looking to try Beholder and not break the bank then I recommend going on a Wednesday or Thursday when they do their $25 special. Included within the special is an entree, beer and a shot.. so get ready to enjoy your evening. This time I opted for the double bacon cheeseburger which didn't disappoint. The special sauce had me scrapping the plate at the end for any drippings because it was so tasty. Lastly, if there's one thing you should try, I RECOMMEND the Grilled Banana Ice Cream with Honey AND Parmesan. Yes, cheese on ice cream and it was amazing. The saltiness of the cheese complimented the sweetness of the banana perfectly! Bon appetite!

Yelp
Wow! This place was pretty great. First time ever at a place like this, and it was super enjoyable. My friend and I both got the 4 course taster, while her partner got the skewers. Oysters 3/5 - pretty standard IMO. Small, but tasty. Roasted Carrots 4/5 - wasn't a fan at first, but it got more delicious the more I ate lol Rib eye 5/5 - best part of the meal, for sure. Perfectly cooked...I just wish there was more of it. Roasted onions definitely still had a bite to them. Coffee ice cream 5/5 - STRONG coffee flavor and very delicious if you are a fan of that. I'm not a huge fan of coffee, but it was still very delicious Cucumber salad 3/5 - refreshing but the miso dressing was definitely too strong Salmond 3/5 - delicious, but compared to the rib eye, it was very disappointing. My friend definitely preferred my dish over her own and had some regrets lol Squash carpaccio 5/5 - wow...super unexpected, but this was my 2nd fave dish of the night. Very very delicious with a nice, smoky flavor. Banana dessert 5/5 - A+ would never have thought to put parmesan cheese on banana for a dessert but so yummy Not a cheap meal but very worth it. Their menu apparently changes every few weeks with a special rotating in every Wed/Thurs with limited availability. Would definitely come here again in the future.

Yelp
An eclectic vibe in an up and coming neighborhood of Indy. You have to go out of your way to come here, but the service and food is worth it! The restaurant is on the smaller side. The staff are super friendly and are willing to give their recommendations. The kitchen is open to the dining area so you can see all the food being prepped. We just stopped in for a drink. This dessert cocktail tasted like a grown up milkshake! Our bartender was nice enough to get us brussels sprouts on the house. They were the most crunchy and flavorful brussels i've had!

Yelp
If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I've only got eyes for Beholder Be forewarned - this a shameless plug for Mr. Brooks' "other restaurant" - an absolute tour de force that deserves to be celebrated and elevated. With a footprint similar to its sibling restaurant (Milktooth), Beholder is the new face of an old auto service station. Once inside, you are greeted by a friendly host, well-placed ambient lighting, avant garde décor, and a progressive dinner-time playlist. Seating options are tailored to the type of experience you prefer: a seat at the chef's table to see Brooks in action, a bar spot to imbibe a Gator Boots (one of Beholder's signature cocktails), the dining room for a more secluded evening (and a glance into the wine cellar), or the private room (IYKYK). No matter what, the food and drink will dazzle. The curation of Beholder's menu rewards exploration, but doesn't overstay its welcome. Some all-time favorites include caviar with tater tots and sour cream sauce, tempura fried lion's mane mushrooms, kimchi honey glazed halibut, Hamachi with golden strawberries, twice-cooked octopus, spinach salad with tempura plantains, mushrooms with polenta, and Okinawa sweet potato Pomme Anna with caramelized plum and yuzu créme fresh. Also, for those who simply cannot enjoy fantastic food without gorgeous grapes, the wine list is wondrous and extensive (ask for the reserve list for a special occasion). Recently enjoyed a stunning 2019 Blagny La Piece Sous Le Bois (1er Cru) For more cautious epicureans looking to dabble, Wednesday nights are the perfect time to savor the special, which scores you a sandwich/burger (past favorites included Mongolian BBQ cheese steak or the bison burger with habanero tequila cheese, bib lettuce, mayo, and pickled red onion) a beer, and a shot. Sold yet? If so, Beholder hides in plain sight on East 10th Street, across from the historic Woodruff Place neighborhood. Cheers

Yelp
Food was fantastic, atmosphere excellent. Service, however, was non existent. It was beyond disappointing. They have a ton of staff, just none that appeared to care. Next time you are out on Tenth St, don't bother to stop.

Yelp
A wonderful treat! I couldn't afford to eat here every day but the food and ambiance were were great. I went on a Monday night so not sure how loud it would be when there are more people. I'll be back!

Yelp
It was my first time for dinner at Beholder this evening, but definitely not the last. I did not opt for the tasting menu - I ordered an item from the appetizer selection (sautéed local mushroom) and one from the entrée section (whole grilled sea bream). Both dishes were excellent, and the fish could easily be split with someone to share as a main dish.

Yelp
We finally made it to Beholder as part of the Winter 2021 presentation of Devour Indy, and we were impressed. The a la carte menu is typically quite pricey, but the dishes on the Devour menu were strong. I started off with a great cocktail called Gator Boots - a sweet and smokey mezcal drink. I was a big fan and would order it again. For the Devour deal, we could choose an appetizer, an entree, and a choicee of sorbet for dessert. I had a cauliflower Caesar salad, and this was very good. The peppers mixed in gave it good flavor. The main entree I ordered was the beef tri-tip steak, but to be honest this wasn't my favorite. The presentation was interesting as it was paired with a tiny serving kf root vegetables, falafel, and a red wine sauce that lacked flavor in my opinion. That said, we ordered chicken-fried sweet potatoes as an a la carte side to split, and this was a great idea. The best thing I had all night was the buttermilk sorbet, which came with a great burnt peach leaf syrup. The combination of that sweet syrup and the smooth buttermilk flavor was absolutely incredible. We received good service in our dining experience as well. If I could, this would be the epitome of a 4.5 star review - good service and really good food for the most part. The entree that fell short is what is holding it up from a true five stars I have given other restaurants, but I would round up to five rather than down to four because of that sorbet. Dang, that was tasty!

Yelp
Found it by accident and couldn't have been happier. What a hidden gem in this beautiful local neighborhood. The food is as good as any major restaurant in the world. It is extraordinarily well prepared with equal service quality. The drinks and wine pairings are incredible. The selections are beyond reproach. The menu is small but the tasting menu really reflects the quality of the food. I hate Back of House add-ons for required tipping and Beholder requires a 5% gratuity. I would prefer just an increase in the menu prices to cover a fair wage for the employees and staff. That being said, don't miss it!

Yelp
This was a unique and fun experience for a birthday dinner! For our first time at Beholder we went on my Birthday, and it was a Tuesday, so there was not much of a crowd. Our server was very attentive but not overbearing. We had an old fashioned to start and it was a great drink! The day we went they were starting their new french menu. It was fun to watch some of the line cooks watch the chef finish off dishes because it was the first day. We began with the bone marrow appetizer, and it was very savory and the bread was delicious. For our entrees, I had the duck (delicious!), and my wife had the french onion soup burger (messy and very tasty). The fries were good, and we finished it off with a unique dessert that was a layered cake of little thin cookies that was then covered in icing and had fresh berries on top. Very good! Their wine selection was great as well! Fun atmosphere and the service was great. The prices were on the higher end, but it was well worth it! The uniqueness was something that will bring us back.

Yelp
Beholder just fucking gets it. Menu is creative, interesting, and always insanely good. Came in most recently for their Wednesday shot and a beer special. Hot wings with fries, blue cheese, and a shot and a beer for $20. You can't beat this anywhere.

Yelp
Beholder is one of the best restaurants in Indy. Their food is always amazing. The menu changes often and I love the variety of dishes that they offer. Be sure to check their social media to see what specialty dishes they are offering that night. Wednesday/Thursday they usually have a specialty "burger" that comes with a shot and a beer for $20-30. They can get busy (even on a Thursday night) so make reservations if you have a larger party. The staff is amazing and very attentive and always willing to offer suggestions for dishes and cocktails.

Yelp
Great service with creative and delicious dishes. The chicken wings were crispy and flavorful. The squid ink pasta was perfectly prepared and fresh. Another dish we ordered was the beef tenderloin (not pictured) and it was so tender and yummy. The Dessert was outstanding! The key lime crumble ice cream is dreamy. We really enjoyed our evening here.

Yelp
Four of us went for a late dinner on Saturday night for a birthday celebration. Loved the eclectic use of old and new decor in this Woodruff Place area neighborhood. Props for putting a great restaurant in a not so great neighborhood. The four of us opted for the tasting menu with wine pairings because why wouldn't you?! Each of us received three Big Rock oysters on the half shell in a slightly vinegary ginger lime minonette. Some of the best oysters I've ever had. The wine pairing was perfect . The seasonal salad with the with super thin sliced turnips radish sweet onion, ricotta Salata with super fine bread crumbs and pecan sprinkled over the top was a fabulous combination with the gruner veltliner wine. The beef carpaccio was very generous and thicker than typical. Ancovy sauce was a bit much for me, but other diners thought was the right amount. The anchovy was very pronounced but with the cheese and the crostini crisps made a not too fishy bite. Three of us had the bison. Three perfectly prepared medium rare bison loin slices with a Diane sauce, but the sauce seemed to be more of a little rich orange-tinted spicy sauce. A chunk of charred cabbage accompanied and was still pretty close to almost Raw and was a little tough to cut. No complaints just didn't add anything to the dish. One Diner chose the twice-cooked octopus leg with potato puree and warmed marinated manzanella olives. She loved it and she hates olives, but an olive, octopus and potato all in one bite was a delicious combination that took away the olive flavor. Both red wine pairings really enhanced both dishes. The Indiana banana cream pie ice cream was a perfect ending with the sautern being sweeter than the ice cream. Just the right amount of food nobody was stuffed and no one felt wanting. Wine pours were the perfect portion that we didn't need a DD. Our server was efficient and polite. The rooms are very live and makes it very difficult to hear the servers and conversation was challenging off and on which is the only reason not 5 stars. Wish we would have known about Beholder sooner.

Yelp
We had a reservation at night but our table ready 30 mins late. It was party of 7 to celebrate special occasions. Food looks good but all food in table salty and cold. Steak was cold and miso soup was cold. Not even warm. For that overpriced food they should make them better. Wasn't worth it. So disappointed

Yelp
Such a gem! We love going on Wednesday or Thursdays. If you follow them on Instagram they'll post their dinner deal each week. Always fun to try new things! The wine list is fantastic as well as the cocktail menu. The bar area is great. Plenty of high top tables. You can also sit at a bar top facing the kitchen. The dining room is cozy with comfortable seats and beautiful artwork. Parking is super easy and plenty of it all around!

Yelp
Ate here for the first time recently. The ambiance is very nice and service was also quite good. We enjoyed the meal. Most of what we had was quite good, some was just good. Given the price point (expect to spend at least $100 pp if you are having alcohol), it's not a place I would dine frequently -- perhaps once or twice a year for special occasions.

Yelp
I've put off writing this review for a while because I can't find the words to do it justice. Beholder is PERFECT. I would not change a thing. Let's start with atmosphere - the overall atmosphere of a restaurant is really important to me, and I prefer to sit in the bar. Our table at Beholder gave us the best of both worlds. We were seated in the main part of the restaurant, with views of both the kitchen area and bar (they faced each other) so there was plenty to look at. The music was lively and just loud enough. Our servers were so friendly, talking through each course, and made the evening so much more enjoyable. I also liked that Beholder is the experience you make it - if you want to dress up and celebrate with a fancy tasting menu, do it! But it's just as welcoming to dress casually and order a burger and a beer. I loved that. The food - we started with cocktails (amazing) and went with the tasting menu + wine pairings. I love a tasting menu (for special occasions!) because you can try a little bit of everything (especially things you wouldn't normally order), experience each course with thoughtful wine pairings, and get to know the chef preparing the menu. The tasting menu rotates, but this one had oysters, king fish, carrot, steak, and sorbet. We also added the optional cheese course (before dessert), which I would highly recommend! Even though it's just a piece of cheese, it was. Delicious piece of cheese and the perfect bridge between savory dishes and dessert. The dish I was least excited about - the king fish - ended up being my favorite, and our server made sure to bring out spoons so we could scoop up every last bit of the delicious broth. And even though we had cocktails and six courses with wine, I left feeling the perfect amount of full and happy. I truly don't have a negative thing to say about Beholder. Great food + drinks, and EXCELLENT overall experience!!

Yelp
Drove through not so safe looking area of neighborhood and arrived at cool looking building. I was bit surprised to see a fancy restaurant in that neighborhood. Parking was convenient because we parked right front of the restaurant. Definitely not a place to bring kids. I felt uncomfortable bringing a 6 year old because of paintings on their wall. Other than that food was great. Homemade olives were tasty. Wish it had some bread for the table but nothing else came with it. We had few dishes and shared food in family style. Brussel sprouts were crunchy out layer and soft insIde. Pasta dish was ok. Halibut fish and scallop dish was tasty. I wasn't a fan of Japanese curry sauce but it wasn't bad. Scallops were perfectly cooked so I enjoyed it very much. Cocktails were pretty good too. Overall food is great. Portion is very small so if you are feeling hungry, one entree might not satisfy your hunger.

Yelp
Rude manager/host, never got to try the food. We arrived for an early dinner reservation for a birthday, a reservation I made a week in advance. I looked at the entire website and Yelp to see if it was a 21 and over restaurant and it wasn't. When we got there, on a day when more than half of their dining room was empty, they turned on the light in the side room which had no one and no ambiance and basically told us it was either that room for our special night or we could choose not to eat there. So we left. So incredibly rude. And Just so unnecessary. Cautionary note to all parents possibly planning a visit with kids.

Yelp
My party of four had a wonderful dining experience at Beholder last night. James was our server and was very personable, attentive and great with recommendations. We had several standout dishes including the spicy tuna handroll, the baby carrot stew, yucca cake with blood sausage and the Great Lakes walleye all made by Jose. They were delicious, flavorful and inventive. Both the food and service made our night out a memorable one!

Yelp
We went on an impromptu visit because we were wanting to try something new. We did not expect such a delicious culinary adventure like we had ! What a special place ! Our waiter James was very helpful in helping us out with our choices and the alcohol pairings with what we ate . We did the prefixed 5 course meal and it did not disappoint! Even though this is a pricey place to go it does meet the expectations you would have with the dining experience. I would highly recommend! Wish I would have taken a picture of the menu so I could explain all the dishes - from the fresh oyster appetizer to the radish turnip radicchio salad ... Devine and I don't even care for radishes! My octopus main course along with my hubs prime rib main course, which we shared each was expertly prepared and so delicious! The refreshing ice cream at the end was divine !! You need to go experience this place !
