16 Beers To Battle Racial Injustice

"If You Ever Wished You Could Get Drunk On Mounds Bars. San Diego spot Belching Beaver is making a (comparatively) light option, brewing a 7.5% ABV milk stout with lots of dark chocolate and coconut, and a small amount of vanilla. Their proceeds are going to San Diegans For Justice, an organization committed to increasing police accountability in the city" - brett keating

12 Best Breweries in San Diego, California

"If you can get past the strange name, you'll find some tasty craft beers (and a lot of beaver puns) here. This quirky brewery is all about "dam good times," as it says, so all of the company's beers, from its light blonde ales to barrel-aged stouts, have an extra dose of personality. The company features lots of interesting flavor combinations, like a Mexican Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout, a honey-flavored Must be the Honey brew, and a hazy IPA with tropical fruit flavors." - Travel + Leisure Editors

This small brewery has become one of San Diego’s craft brewery icon in little over a decade of operation. A must try if you are in San Diego. Good beer selection from IPA to seltzers. They are known for their stouts, peanut chocolate stouts. It sounds crazy at first but when I first tried it little over a decade ago, it was nothing like anything I’ve tried. I’ve been a fan ever since. Mostly friendly happy attentive staff. Dog friendly is a definite plus around here. Open concept of roll up doors brings the outside inside. Got a game room with pool table and taco stand outside, although it’s a little pricy. 4.4/5 ⭐️

Google
LOVE this brewery and their beer, and was happy they opened here in North Park. Try the light lager, the barrel-aged Saison or the Viva La Beaver, a Mexican chocolate nitro milk stout. Excellent beers, great staff, TRY IT!

Tamara Green

Google
Nice brewery with a taco stand out front. The peanut butter stout is popular, so be sure to give it a try. Employees were friendly, and the food from the taco stand was good!

Google
Easy place to find and we were lucky to find a parking spot. The Beaver had an exceptional beer for a woman who doesn't like craft beer. Great music and a friendly staff. I'll never be in San Diego again but if I was, I would certainly come here again.😃

Google
Great place, good beer, good service, awesome vibe in a small neighborhood bar, but I recommend avoiding their Tuesday open-mic comedy night. No disrespect intended, but the so-called "comedy" drove us out of there when we had been having a good time up until that.

Google
A must-visit if you’re in the area! We stopped by for a beer flight and loved the laid-back, welcoming vibe. To make it even better, we brought over some sandwiches from the nearby 'The Girls Deli' to enjoy alongside our drinks. The combination of delicious brews and tasty bites made for a perfect afternoon. Highly recommend stopping in for a relaxed, enjoyable time!

Google
Love this place. Great community hangout, dog friendly, great service from the staple bar staff. No food but plenty of options nearby that deliver and the typical food truck That posts up out front. They offer beer floats with a couple of their stouts, a unique offering and surprisingly delicious! Go with a flight, give a few of their offerings a try. You won't be disappointed.

Google
Solid selection of different beers and a very cool taproom. The staff was friendly, definitely plan to visit again soon

Yelp
Belching beaver is a must visit brewery when visiting San Diego! Knowledgeable service when it comes to beers, in love with the Carmel mocha latte. Definitely bringing this back home! It's Monday and it's radio bingo night! I just won a stick and a beer!

Yelp
Oh I breweries I like beer. I like beavers I like belching. This place has it all thought it was cool. They make their own beer. They have this awesome looking mural on the outside. Great place. Awesome ambience show up show out. You'll have a good time.

Yelp
Very cool little brewery. Nice guys working counter, good selection of beers and open air counter seating Great little place to stop for a cold one.

Yelp
Good bar with good beer BUT I hate trivia here on Thursday nights. It is slow paced and not fun. I actively saw a team cheating and I called them out. I have a morale compass and I wouldn't be able to sleep unless I did something. As a citizen with TSA Precheck, when I see something, I say something. Security doesn't stop at the airport; it's everywhere we go. I'm all for having a good time (I highly recommend the Hazers Gonna Haze beer), but there's limits. If Belching Beaver condones a lack of integrity and Courage to stare a cheater in the eye, then I won't Honor them with my Commitment to their bar.

Yelp
Came to grab a drink after taking a walk in North Park and so happy we stopped in. The place had a constant flow of customers but was never overly crowded. We didn't have time but we'll be back to play some pool and we were able to bring our dog with us, which is a plus!
google avatar

Yelp
Their peanut butter stout tastes great! The service is great as well. They let us try samples of whatever we wanted before purchasing a drink, which I really appreciate. Super friendly staff, and a nice place to hang out and get drinks with friends!

Yelp
We popped in for a quick cold beer on a hot day. We live in WA and the only Belching Beaver brew we normally see there is the PB Stout, so we wanted to check out what else they have. The guy tending bar was really nice and let us sample a few before we made our decision. and were not disappointed in the fruit sour and the lager that we decided on. The taproom is a good size and I love the natural edge wood tabletops they have. They don't have a patio, but it was too hot to sit outside anyway. And street parking in the area can be quite a challenge. Don't park in the small lot next to the taproom as that's for the salon customers next door (signage doesn't make this clear but we asked).

Yelp
This location is awesome! Recently came here before an event and was treated extremely well. We go to play their foosball, chill in their arcade and also got to drink some awesome beer. I can't thank Kyle enough either for his friendly smile when we first came in, his extensive knowledge helping guide us to the best selections for our pallets and above all, his great attitude and genuine friendliness. Thanks Kyle! I'll for sure be back not only because of the great beer, but also because of you!!!
google avatar

Yelp
These drinks were super not good. Tasted very watered down, almost no flavor to them. But the place was cute for trivia!! Good indoor space with an arcade deeper in. The outdoor area was less cute--mostly just a bunch of long bench tables and not much else. Still not sure how our team managed to win trivia night, but that was a fun perk. We were all seated outside, and there are no speakers out there so we had to keep sending people inside to hear the questions and relay them back to the group

Yelp
Blueberry beer is SO GOOD! Definitely a must try it tasted like a fresh blueberry! The service was quick and very friendly. The place had a lot of room and played good music to just vibe.

Yelp
Belching Beaver is another great brewery in North Park. We used to frequent their OB location, but it has since closed. We found the North Park location to be everything that we loved about the OB location. Becky loves the fact that Belching Beaver has an entire lineup of hard seltzers. I love the fact that they brew some of the best beers on the planet. I mean, c'mon, the Peanut Butter Milk Stout is legendary! We were hanging out with friends in North Park and Belching Beaver was most defintely on our list of places to stop. Chill place, cool vibes, great beers.

Yelp
Came by Belching Beaver Brewery to have a nice cold drink after the beach and chill before it was time for dinner. Parking situation was a bit weird that the small lot next to them, was not for them and you are not allowed to park there... so we had to park down the street, around the corner... Small little bar with super friendly staff that helped us decide what to drink. My friend had opted to get a flight where you get to choose your own 4 to try, and price varies depending on what you pick. I ended up picking PEANUT BUTTER MILK STOUT (CO2 version - 5.3% ABV stout). Had tried this one in comparison to my friends NITRO version and we had agreed the NITRO version was better. Yummy PB stout. I had also gotten SHE GOT WIT (wheat beer/witbier/blanche at 4.5% ABV), JAMMIN OUT (7.1% ABV oak aged sour beer), and FLUFFY AF (6.5% ABV mixed-fermentation sour beer). All pretty decent too ! My friend had gotten a blueberry beer that was delicious as well ! Nice casual place to chill, although small but nicely priced.

Yelp
I love Belching Beaver but live in LA. So anytime I come to the greater SD area, I always try to make a point to swing by a BB location. I was lucky enough to be close to this location and could visit it for the first time. First off, I just wanted to warn/advise you that there are a lot of pictures on here of food. I don't think they offer it anymore. At least when I was there (1/1/23) they weren't offering anything and I didn't even see a menu posted. If this is a permanent thing, I don't know. But if you are expecting to get some food along with your beers, be warned you might not be able to (I was bummed to find that out) This location is understandably a lot smaller then their other taphouse/pub which makes for a much better & intimate experience. Things were somewhat slow when we were there which was nice, but I could easily see this place get packed later in the day/on the weekends. The employee working was incredibly friendly and helpful. I chatted with him for a second and was able to pick out a great flight of stuff I can't easily find up by me. I then added a few special edition/limited run bottles to bring home with me. It was great. No complaints from start to finish. There is a parking lot right next to the location, but it is very limited. You might have to find street parking once again depending on time of day/day of the week.

Yelp
I'm giving this spot a star because their beer is really good. However, this location is closed, and they've made no mention of it anywhere on their website, and haven't updated their phone message to reflect as much. We stopped by on Saturday night and were disappointed to see it shuttered, with no sign or anything indicating when they would be reopening. Coming here is a gamble, but I can confidently say that as of 1/28, this location is definitely temporarily closed.
google avatar

Yelp
They are closed indefinitely due to a fire. They need to update their status. It's so sad, this was one of our favorites to

Yelp
My favorite brewery in San Diego, without a doubt. Belching Beaver always surprised me with their creative ways to make new beers. I was first drawn to them because of their flagship peanut butter stout, but every time I come they keep on impressing! My new favorite may now be the blueberry muffin wheat. Smells and tastes amazing. I even bought a growler to go to take home with me. They are also dog friendly so you can bring your pups here for a good time. I hope that they expand to the LA area because we need places like this!
google avatar

Michael S.

Yelp
Love downtown North Park and this brew pub is one of our spots when in the area. The peanut butter stout here is one of SD's more unique beers, which at first was a hard sell for me because I'm not a fan of sweet beers, but it's not too sweet at all and has a very smooth drinkability. (side note: miss the OB location - my very first BB experience)
google avatar

John D.

Yelp
Stopped by for a quick beer. Extremely spacious with a garage door front so you can be seated on the stools while people watching. Creative IPA names - opted for Texifornia ;). Bae is right next to the "Welcome to San Diego" mural for anyone who's looking for a gram pic!
google avatar

Rob M.

Yelp
Stopped at their tap room on 30th Street. Wish they had more of their stouts on tap. They make awesome stouts, but only had two on tap! Wife tried three different seltzers and didn't like any of them. She said they tasted flat and she was disappointed. Expected a much better experience.
google avatar

Moni L.

Yelp
I'm a huge fan of BB, but a special shout out to Collin!!! This was a favorite stop. BB has good beer. So, thanks Collin for the knowledge, the new tastes and the vibes. You're awesome, attentive, informative and just a dam (insert beaver here) chill-out person all around. I'll swing by again when I get the chance. Cheers!

Yelp
Chill bar with a street side view and walk-up potential. They have flights, and a digital menu board with a wealth of beers to try. The décor is classic rustic, modern bar, and I appreciated the feeling of being connected to the inner city while sipping on the suds. The water available comes out of a spout on the side of the bar with plastic cups, so you'll have to get up to go get that. Meh. The beers I got were varied, and fairly good! With so many options, it'll be hard not to find a couple you'll keep coming back for. Overall, enjoyable bar trip without too many flairs and bartenders were cordial.
google avatar

Monika B.

Yelp
I came here with my boyfriend during happy hour on a weekday. I came for the peanut butter stout. I was thoroughly surprised with the taste as well as fridge selection to take home. I came from the LA area specifically to come here to drink beer! And that's exactly what I did. We watched some of the Padres game, even though it's sacrilegious being a Dodgers fan. I wanted to scoop some vanilla ice cream in my peanut butter stout it was so desserty. I would come back to try more of their selection.
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I've been coming here since they first opened and still find it to be a solid place to come hang out and have great beers. The seating now is much more group friendly and I love the patio addition in the back.

R619 L.

Yelp
Good beer selection and an energetic environment. Great place for good beer and decent bar food. And also great to support local businesses.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
We stopped in during an informal 30th street bar crawl. There is a variety of seating and they were able to accommodate our large group on a Saturday afternoon. We tried a variety of beers and the peanut butter stout was a favorite amongst the group.
google avatar

Ben Y.

Yelp
Cool spot, they have a nice seating area in the back with a foos ball table and plenty of seating. I'm sure you can rent it out for a party if you ask nicely. I'm a fan of their stouts and nothing beats drinking it fresh from the tap. The bartender was really friendly and overall it's a cool place to hang out on a lazy after noon
google avatar

Hannah S.

Yelp
This is my go to neighborhood chill spot. I love that they have a back room with arcade games and pool tables which makes going out for a beer 10 times more fun. They have an outdoor patio as well where they serve food- it's usually Italian. I love the atmosphere and the staff is very nice. Will definitely continue coming here often and recommend it to anyone in the north park area!
google avatar

Yelp
So amazing!!! outstanding beer choices... And a really nice vibe to the entire brewery! Overall, I was very impressed!

Yelp
So disappointed to learn that the Belching Beaver Taproom is closed after a fire on October 7, 2023. Stopped by during my visit to San Diego on October 13th to find the door locked and a smell of burnt wood in the air. Hoping they reopen soon.
google avatar

Yelp
We were able to stop by Belching Beaver during our most recent San Diego trip and I loved it! They had a huge selection of beer for you to choose from. Being from Vegas, we haven't been able to try a lot of their beers. The only beer from Belching Beaver that I've had was their peanut butter milk stout so I was super excited to be able to try their other beers! I opted to get a flight where I chose 4 different types of beer. The price depends on what your choices were. It's not a set price, you just add up how much each small glass cost and that is your total! For my flight, I decided to try their: Fruitful Dreams - Foeder aged sour with apricot, peaches, and white grape She Got Wit - Witbier Peanut Butter Milk Stout Peanut Butter Milk Stout Nitro Passion Fruit Guava Hard Seltzer I enjoyed all of the beers that I had. Fruitful Dreams was quite sour and I think the Nitro version of the PB Milk Stout is better than the CO2 version. They had a blueberry witbier that was also very delicious. It tasted like blueberry muffin! But I forgot what it was called. They have plenty of seating and are doggo friendly! Definitely would recommend a visit and I'll definitely be back when I'm in the area!
google avatar

Yelp
Multiple taps of beers & seltzers. $10 for 4-4 oz samples during Craft Beer week. Can get cans of beer or hard seltzer to go or growlers
google avatar

Jennifer H.

Yelp
Great location in my opinion. Walking distance from other breweries and bars. The garage door format allows for nice street views and great air flow. Music is controlled through a jukebox so can set the atmosphere to your desire. There is a nice range of beers to select from.
google avatar

Nicky K.

Yelp
Recommend to me by some locals I talked with at a different bar down the street. Came by on a Tuesday around 4 and there was hardly anyone there, but there was still music playing, the doors and windows were open, and the vibe was fun even though they were slow. The bartender was friendly. Beer was refreshing on a sunny afternoon.
google avatar

Courtney D.

Yelp
Great beers and a great spot to hangout. I love that the windows open completely, creates an indoor/outdoor vibe that's chill for weekends. We will definitely be back!
google avatar

Stacey M.

Yelp
We stopped in on a Saturday afternoon and we're able to snag one of the last tables! Place is pretty popular but has a good amount of seating for the size. All of the beers we had were delicious - we tried the peanut butter latte ale, the peanut butter stout, the honey blonde and an ipa. All were great quality and very flavor forward!! Great craft beer spot with an awesome vibe and friendly people.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Damn it, closed back down after such a short time of being open to the public. Well i guess i was lucky enough to experience the brief opening between the covid shut down. The best part is i got to get my favorite beer in all of San Diego Peanut Butter Latte. I've only had it once before in some other bar, its a seasonal beer thats not always on tap, so it was a bit of a surprise that they had it. Much like its darker, more famous brother, the peanut butter stout, its sweet and has a very low IBU (bitterness) but is much lighter and this particular one was on nitro which made it even better. If you like the Peanut Butter Stout, I'm almost certain you'll love the Peanut Butter Latte. I even took a crowler (32oz can) to go, they fill it on site out of the tap and seal the can. Had i known that they were gonna close back down i would have gotten a second one, guess i should have just got one because its limited release and hard to find. I can't wait for them to reopen what I'm envisioning is a black and tan, peanut butter stout and peanut butter latte!
google avatar

Mike K.

Yelp
Great spot for a wide selection of homemade brews made on-site. We went on a Friday night and the vibe is cool and tons of great variety of brews and spiked seltzer's. The service is great and super attentive. They also have a fridge where you can take some brews home. My fav is probably the peanut butter stout on nitro which has an amazingly rich peanut butter and chocolate/ coffee taste and smell. Love the creamy froth added by the nitro. Also love the Must be the Honey Ale which was lighter with a nice hint of honey. We enjoyed our visit but the only minor complaint was the music that was playing. It was super loud and super heavy metal...kind of hard to hear unless you sat outside on the patio. Overall a perfect rating for their amazing brews!

Yelp
Getting hammered with friends and doing the quiz on Thursday thank you for the excellent service
google avatar

Marshall A.

Yelp
Great beer! Great atmosphere! Great staff! Great trivia! Gr- AMAZING trivia host!!!! I love you guys, thanks. Love the purple sour! Great sours all around! Gotta love the sours! Can't get enough of the sours! I have a friend who is well versed in wood and wood accessories, and he couldn't get enough of the wood here! It was honestly unsettling how much he loved the wood, but I think that's more on him than you guys. Great wood! If you guys actually had any beavers that belched in this location, they would also be very happy about the wood. But that would probably be a city code violation and you could be subject to fines and/or citations. Uhhh...ummmm.... uhhh.... can't wait to go back for more wood! Oh.... and? The sours . 10/10
google avatar

Briana H.

Yelp
Brewery is great, beertenders were friendly- but the beers just missed the mark for me.
google avatar

Kris A.

Yelp
The beer is great. They opened up a little game room in the back and usually have a pop up food stall in the back. Good stuff.
google avatar

Alden C.

Yelp
I had Belching Beaver beer quite a few years ago and remembered that I liked it but I couldn't recall exactly what beer I had. So I figured I should refresh my memory and tried three separate beers from this brewery to get a better opinion of the beer. I immensely enjoyed all three beers! I had the Mexican Chocolate Peanut Butter Stout as well the Me So Honey Blonde and then another Peanut Butter Stout... a milk stout specially. All three beers were highly drinkable and enjoyable. Not only that all three were so very smooth which stood out to me when trying different beers from a brewery. Of course the two chocolate stouts were wonderful and perfect for colder, drizzly days. The Blonde was one of the better ones I've had in recent memory and before you knew it it was gone... and so easy and tempting to grab another. Excellent beer from this brewery as fun swag too which I had to get a shirt(of course) to "represent " on future brewery adventures.
google avatar

Janelle A.

Yelp
I love brewery! We always come here when we're in San Diego! It was nice going out for a beer and trying out 4 different beers before deciding on what to get. I ended up getting the horchata, my husband got the beaver on Mars and of course we always get the peanut butter. Staff is always friendly and awesome! To drink beer here, they have to serve food and the hot dog and chips are sooo good and cheap! We tried the fusion chips are it's sweet and salty. The bread for the hot dog, excellent! The vibes and music here is always positive! Don't forget to take beer back home; We got the seltzer pack, peanut butter, and on nitro peanut butter.
google avatar

Sandy Y.

Yelp
Not the biggest beer fan TBH.. but really enjoyed all the beers/seltzers I tried here! Specifically, loved the Horchata Stout, Hazers Gonna Haze, and Viva La Beaver. The stouts are quite sweet, but getting them as part of the flights was the perfect amount! The flavors of the stouts blew me away. They tasted and smelled exactly like their descriptions and tasted like scrumptious desserts. Hazers Gonna Haze pleasantly surprised me because it wasn't as hoppy as other IPAs I've had. It's super refreshing and juicy! FYI, we came during COVID and they do have an outdoor patio area. Dogs are welcome here too. There's also heating lamps you can request for those colder days. Because of COVID rules, each person ordering a drink must also buy a hotdog + chip combo. ALSO, the "Greetings from San Diego" mural is painted on the wall outside this brewery... for those interested in pics ;)
google avatar

Christian L.

Yelp
Delicious beer. Poppin' atmosphere with a game room in the back. Get it while the getting is good!
google avatar

Jessica J.

Yelp
The peanut butter stout. One of the most unique tasting beer you'll ever taste in SD. I love peanut butter but honestly I'm not a huge fan of beer, so this completely changed my mind about beers. It proved me that beer CAN taste good. What's cool is that after trying the peanut butter stout, I tried one of the other flavors (honey blonde) from a can that a coworker brought for a happy hour and I liked it just as much. Belching Beaver has gotta be one of the very few beers that I actually enjoy. As a added bonus, my bf seems to find all the different beaver designs on the bottles for each flavor hilarious. The only reason I take off one star is because the service wasn't that pleasant when I went to this brewery. I asked some questions about their beers on tab and the guy who was helping me answered them in a tone as if I should obviously already know the answers to my questions. The table we were sitting at were also sticky and empty glasses were laying around other tables.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
I've had Belching Beaver beer before and since we were in San Diego, we thought we we would check out one of their brew pubs since their home is San Diego. From the outside you can see they have garage doors which are open to the sidewalk giving it the open air feel even in February which felt so good. When you walk in you see the industrial feel to the place with concrete floors, exposed brick and lots of wood and metal. There are about 17 taps on the front of the bar and what looks like 17 more on the side. There were 20 to 25 different beers on the menu, we think all were Belching Beaver with quite a few different IPA's. The interior is clean and comfortable with lots of seating and counterspace to get cozy and relax or play a game. Many different games were stacked on a shelf to choose from including the game of life. They have lots of options for beer to-go, 6 packs, 4 packs, growlers, crowlers and various swag. It was a nice stop for a good beer!
google avatar

Deanne L.

Yelp
Always a good vibe here at the Belching Beeeevs Good selection of beer and a fun atmosphere at affordable prices. They have trivia nights sometimes and it gets poppin! It's fun to be around even if you're not playing. Dog friendly which I like because I get to pet some cuties Got a food truck if you're hungry Try a beer float!
google avatar

Alyssa H.

Yelp
Really cool place with a wide variety of beers. There is literally a beer for everyone! I am not a big beer drinker but I LOVE the Super Viva and its smooth, chocolatey, sweet flavor. You can try a flight of 4 beers for $12. Good deal! Relaxed atmosphere, friendly staff, quick service. It's a great place for intimate parties and small groups. Belching Beaver is dog friendly too!
google avatar

Branson U.

Yelp
This is a very good Brewery! I feel like they have something that everyone will like. If you go with a group of people that all have different tastes I believe that Belching Beaver is the spot! The vibe is great and they do have a good amount of seating and tables! I had always driven by here and wanted to come in. Very glad that we were able to! Will totally make a return trip!
