The 13 Best BBQ Spots In Chicago - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If you’re already familiar with the Southern restaurant Luella’s in Lincoln Square, then you’ll understand why Bell Heir's is so great. Bell Heir's is a small, counter-service BBQ spot in Bronzeville, and its owner is one of Luella’s grandsons. Rib tips and turkey legs are lacquered in a tangy, sweet sauce that complements the hickory-smoked flavor of the meat. Especially the smoked turkey leg topped with baked mac and cheese. A forkful of everything together tastes like the backyard picnic you wait all winter to have." - adrian kane, john ringor

Bell Heir's BBQ - Review - Canaryville - Chicago - The Infatuation

"If you’re already familiar with the Southern restaurant Luella’s in Lincoln Square, then you’ll understand why Bell Heir's is so great. Bell Heir's is a small, counter-service BBQ spot in Bronzeville, and its owner is one of Luella’s grandsons. The menu is short, with things like rib tips, fried chicken wings, and a burger. And the BBQ is definitely the best stuff here. The meat is lacquered in a tangy, sweet sauce that complements the hickory-smoked flavor of the meat. Especially the smoked turkey leg topped with baked mac and cheese. A forkful of everything together tastes like the backyard picnic you wait all winter to have. Bell Heir's is primarily a takeout operation, though there are a few tables available." - Adrian Kane

My son & I stopped by after seeing a post on IG! The inviting music hits you right as you open the open. Chef & the cashier greeted us with kind spirits. The wait wasn’t long at all considering the food is made fresh. We’ll definitely be back again.

I just found out about this place and, I'm always looking to Support LOCAL BLACK BUSINESSES. I felt let down! I ordered fried pickles, because I've always loved them.... These are dry, crunchy and I think these pickles are just not Fresh at all. I wanna refund, but more importantly I want y'all to do better.

Just tried it yesterday. Ordered 2 Rib Tips Combos, with one having chicken wings and the other having hot sausages. Rib tips were pretty good, especially with the sauce. Fries were a bit undercooked but they were better eith the sauce. Sausage was a bit overcooked but was alright, and the chicken wings were completely unseasoned but edible. Seriv3 is nice, but they said 20 min and it took 40 min. You do get your $ worth in quantity for sure. Overall I gave it a 4 out of 5

I am from Chi and I wanted to eat all the real Chi food. I had wings with mild cause, beef, and etc but hadn’t had rib tips and links. Not only did we meet the chef, Jeff, the light skinned bald guy 🤣, and his assist but the food was everything. My friend who still lives in the Chi was like I found my new spot. My friend got the jerk tips and said it was tender and juicy. One of my sons has the brisket Mac and cheese and other brisket burger they both said the food was on point. Definitely a black owned friendly nice business, service is great, and food is even better.

Food was amazing. Got the Brisket burger (very big portion) that came with a side of perfectly crispy crinkle fries. We also got a side of Mac and cheese (must try!!). Staff was super friendly and welcoming. Can't wait to try their brisket pizza.

I've been going to Bell Heirs since they open they're doors the service is always pleasant and the food is pretty good for the most part reading some of the comments is unbelievable a friend of mine was in there the other day she said they mixed up her order and the people there went above in beyond to correct the situation and she was pleased with the results some of the recent reviews seem more personal than accurate. I've lived in the back of the yards for over 30yrs when you wouldn't find a black owned business in the neighborhood you people keep up the good work don't be discouraged keep shining and keep serving that tender bbq

Sunday, October 10, 2024. Let me start by saying I never write reviews however, this food was so incredibly BAD, I had to express my frustration! I arrived at about 2:15, they open at 2p. So maybe I was the first customer of the day. When I walked in I didn't smell any smoke or see a BBQ pit, so I don't know where they made the ribs (probably oven baked). I told the gentlemen who took my order that this was my first time here, so you would think they would want a return customer and put their best foot forward. I ordered the rib tip dinner, which are tips and fries. The tips were cut from the end that's lean and tough, not the meaty middle portion with the bone.(if you are familiar with rib tips you know what I mean). The pieces were very small and slathered in sauce. The fries were ok, better than the ribs. I also order the brisket nachos. (after I was told I couldn't get the brisket by itself) I couldn't even taste the tiny pieces of brisket, which were tough and slathered in sauce. I didn't like the flavor of the sauce either. The nachos were just regular tri-colored chips. My total was $39 and change. Not worth it at ALL!! I went because of a post I saw on Facebook. The restaurant must have knew they were coming and gave them special pieces that would photograph well. Don't believe the hype, this food was awful!!! I will never go back and will advise all my friends not to go either.

If you're not drooling by the end of this review, you might want to check your taste buds! The brisket double cheeseburger at Bell Heir's BBQ is so ridiculously good, it should come with a warning label: Caution: May cause extreme burger addiction. Picture this: Two juicy, smoky brisket patties stacked high, oozing with cheese that’s perfectly melted like it got a master’s degree in deliciousness. Each bite is a flavor explosion that’ll make you rethink every other burger you've ever had. And just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, they text you when your order is ready. That's right—no more pacing back and forth like a hungry lion; your brisket masterpiece is just a text away. Now, let me be honest, this burger is big enough to make even the hungriest foodie hesitate. A single burger option might be a good idea for those with smaller appetites, but let’s be real, you’ll probably end up ordering the double anyway because once you pass this brisket test, there’s no turning back. In conclusion, Bell Heir's BBQ has turned me into a brisket believer. I’ll be back, burger in hand, ready to tackle round two. And if you're still reading this, stop. Go get one. Now.

Yelp
This food was so good that we went back 2 days in a row. It's so hard to find good turkey tips but these were phenomenal! They don't have a strong jerk flavor but it was just enough for me. Service was good, food took about 35 minutes but I expected that. It's small inside, but cozy. We didn't really explore too much of the menu so I can only vouch for the turkey tips. the chicken wings were also very fresh (but based on the reviews, I know that wasn't everyone's experience)

Yelp
On a visit from San Diego and I was desperately searching for bomb jerk turkey tips. Searching oneline I came across a Black Foodies video review of this restaurant. Well, the jury is in. Our meal was fantastic! We got the jerk turkey tips over mac n cheese and fried green tomatoes. The portion of turkey tips over mac was very health, enough for my wife and I to be full and the flavor was great. We were there 2 minutes before opening, so the first customers of the day. The owner is a humble, impressive young man. I don't know him but, as a middle age Black man, I'm proud to see what he is creating. I highly recommend that you come enjoy tasty food and support this young business!

Yelp
Got an order of Tips and order of 3 wings. Tips were definitely tender, and pretty tasty. Only issue was too many fries and not enough Tips for $20! The wings had a very nice crust on them my advice is to bite the wing, don't separate otherwise the crust will fall off! Overall the food was decent I'll just ask for less fries and drain the grease!

Yelp
The brisket pizza is truly one of the best slice you can get in the city. The slice is large and very fulfilling. Would have shown a picture but couldn't stop eating it. Also, don't forget to add a drizzle of their bbq sauce on it. It's an added punch of flavor.

Yelp
You do not get what you pay for nor do you get what's posted on their website. Their brisket when they serve it to you, it looks like shaved beef, tiny pieces in K. C. masterpiece barbecue sauce, which is terrible. The lady that waited on us she was kind. The fried pickles are extremely thin. I have seen pickles that go on sandwiches much thicker than than the ones they use. So they were very hard because there was nothing in them. The fried green tomatoes once again nothing in them I asked if they sliced them any thinner. I did like the french fries. The pizza they should not sell the pizza because the sauce taste just like tomato paste no type of seasoning straight from the can tiny pieces of brisket with very little cheese however, the crust was ok just ok.

Yelp
Rib tips are $20 and their BBQ is cooked in an oven, non authentic, and not for the blue collar

Yelp
The food here is really good! I like that they actually take orders over the phone and its just not a walk-in place (something that some of these local BBQ restaurants need to take note of). note: If your phone order is over $70 you will have to pay in advance with a card. The Turkey leg is a nice size and was good and tender. The large rib tips/fries was good, my kids just felt like the portion was a bit small. The catfish fillet dinner was the best I have ever had!! It was crunchy and sooo flavorful! The brisket fries was new to me but they were actually quite satisfying and a nice sized portion. The only con I have is that I ordered a single fry with bbq sauce and the portion was teeny tiny lol. I recommend making the option for fries only sm, md & large because everyone will always just want fries with bbq sauce. Other than that the employee taking my phone order was very nice and professional, there was no issues during pickup and my order was correct. I highly recommend checking this place out if you have a taste for some good bbq!

Yelp
Two words.. BELL HEIRS! Okaayyy!! Listen if you want some GOODT food (and yes I meant the T in GOODT) Please RUN to Bell Heir's!! Babeee let me tell you first of all y'all social media restaurant suggestions did not disappoint this time! Let me tell y'all about my experience! First I couldn't decide on what I wanted so boom I call the restaurant and give my pleasantries before I give him my indecisive thoughts out loud. Tyrus answers the phone (found out later he's the owner ..ok doing the work as the owner I see you) I ask him what do you recommend, he responds well what do you have a taste for... I go rib tips . he like I got you we have tips and tip combos one option is even catfish * pause* where can you get tips and catfish at? I'll wait.... right... Ok so after our literal 5 minute conversation, me pleading to put 2 out of the last 3 slices of brisket pizza (yessss you read right brisket on a pizza) to the side for me ...and he did! *My first win* so I gave him my eta and we settled on calling my order in when I was 20 minutes out... still haven't make a decision but I had a little time. I called back and just got a bit of everything... and Honey!!! This was an experience.. We started with the brisket pizza... The flavors OMG... The brisket was nice and juicy and tender... The cheese to sauce ratio on point, crust buttery and perfect and I don't know what the drizzle was on top but baby I need some to use like we use parsley ok! That pizza didn't make it 10 blocks.. Then we started on the ribs tips and hot links.. Now when I got tray out of the bag I had to use some extra upper body strength cause it's HEAVY! My husband asked for a hot link .. wrapped in bread (y'all know the one that's steamed and stuck to the top of the tips with the sauce on it, that you will fight over.. Yeah that one) ok I oblige and he takes a bite and his eyes almost popped out his head like the cartoons... I ask is it good he like baeeee taste this! So I do and when I say omg.. I'm just gonna say OMG! Juicy, hot, skin isn't tough and it's seasoned perfectly, I think he might inject it with something because the flavor profile and the juiciness I just can't believe it's that level in a hot link... Yesssss win #2... Me I'm ready for these rib tips... I picked up my 1.5/2 inch cut of tip and a drop of juice feel from it... I knew I was in for a treat... When I bit into it!!! Lawwddd have Mercy! Seasoned to the Heavens.. I mean the seasons married with the slight char but it's sooo moist.. Not fat and every bite got better and better... My absolute favorite thus far on this food journey. Next up... The double cheeseburger with brisket... Yup here go the brisket again... Love! Let me tell you ... These little perfectly chopped rectangular pieces of brisket that's basking in his homemade bar b q sauce.. on top of this juicy burger with the cheese melt just slightly spilling over the bun.. aesthetically pleasing and that first bite was a eye roll in the back of your head... Guess what I found extra in my burger y'all... 4 Fried Pickles.... I almost passed out while seated. I had sauce and cheese all over my face and hands... Which is my favorite... ALL Of them! Ok you would think that's it... Nope it's not... Lastly we had the.... Turkey leg stuffed with Mac and cheese... My mouth watering thinking about this magical combo... First of all this turkey leg was amazing within it's own right.. big, tender isn't an adequate word but yes TENDER... Adorned with that homemade bar b q sauce again and this homemade Mac and cheese piled high on top... It's creamy, cheesey and seasoned perfectly.. the pairing right there.. top notch! So to sum it up for y'all! This place should have a line out the door from open to close! Do yourself a favor and treat your taste buds better and get there ASAP! I love to eat and eat well... I had to call back and speak with Tyrus and tell him just how amazing this flavor experience was.. I could hear his smile and gratitude over the phone. We need one on the Westside, Downtown and the burbs... Bell Heir's is truly on to something great.. Go check them out and tell them.. Lesley sent you! Happy eating y'all!!

Yelp
This is a fast food carry out place. For carry out I ordered BBQ ribs with 4 fried chicken wings. The food was mediocre. BBQ had a burnt taste instead of a smoky BBQ taste. The bbq sauce was not impressive. Fries were included. Cost was $26.00 plus tax. Must order ahead. Very slow service. As I stated, I am not impressed with the food. I've had much better bbq. I don't plan on ordering from this place again. Worst BBQ I've had so far

Yelp
Great new BBQ spot on 47th Street just a mile west of Dan Ryan. We had a Brisket Burger made with two beef patties, cheese, fried pickles and topped with BBQ Brisket. Definitely two meals worth of food. Also had a Rib Tip Meal tender and crispy Tips with a great sauce. Service was friendly and helpful. Store was clean and parking was easy.

Yelp
Listen Bell heir has great customer service. I have been here a few times trying out variety of items. I will share the other photos and review later. But today I had the chicken and Brisket Nachos and you see the third photo is after i got down on those Nachos lol fire !!! Bringing an edge to the chi BBQ scene. I will be back. Nice seating and ambiance is nice. Good bbq it takes time to make perfection
google avatar

Yelp
We pretty much ordered the whole menu & everything was really good. My personal favorites were the wings & rib tips. The seasoning on the wings is out of this world & the tips were some of the best I've had. I would also recommend the brisket mac, burger & pizza. The staff was very accommodating & even helped me to my car. Definitely give this place a try.

Yelp
Had bomb new BBQ at a place that just opened. Bell Heir's BBQ in Canaryville. Run by Tyris Bell the Brother of Darnell Reed from Louella's Southern Kitchen on the North Side. Brisket Burger (two perfectly cooked patties w/cheese topped with tender brisket chunks and fried pickles, served w/bbq sauce and fries. Brisket Mac and Cheese w/bacon for good measure, and the BBQ smoked Turkey Leg w/Mac and Cheese. If you're in the area of 47th w/o the Dan Ryan, give this brothers food a try. First month is make or break for new restaurants!

Patricia W.

Yelp
They were busy because of their anniversary. But the food was worth the wait. The service was great . The meats are tender and was seasoned to perfection.

Yelp
I love to support my own ppl. It's just when they fall short of satisfaction I'm torn between being the Chicago Foodie that I am and not wanting to downgrade what ppl are trying to do. I say this with the most black love. I was just a customer for the first time this evening. Yall have a good concept, but yall have to get back to the drawing board.

L W.

Yelp
My wife had the turkey leg with macaroni. I had the BBQ tips combo with links. Of course, we crossed dishes to sample. The meat that was left to me from the turkey leg didn't exactly fall off the bone, but I had no beef with it (pun intended). My tips were meaty, and the links were big. My only regret was that it only had one slice of bread. There was a handwritten special ad posted on the sidewalk outside the entrance offering 2 slices of pizza and fries for $9.99. Unfortunately it wasn't in the budget for that visit, but now I have a reason to return when I return to check out their rib tips combo with chicken wings. Overall, it wasn't bad, and I look forward to another visit. At least there wasn't a long line of folks waiting on the street looking like they were waiting for government cheese. Looking forward to returning.

Yelp
Food was great!! The customer service is always on point!!! Restaurant is always clean and the owner Tyris Bell is a real nice guy!!!

Yelp
I was amazed how good the brisket burger was nice spot to come to I will definitely be back the cashier was very nice as well.

Derrick P.

Yelp
New fav on the bbq spot. Food was awesome customer service great. Definitely would recommend to others.

Karen O.

Yelp
I ordered the rib tip and wings combo. The rib tips were burnt and doused with sauce to cover it up!! The wings were undercooked and the fries were soggy from the sauce and the hot undercooked chicken wings being placed on top!! $22.99 a bit over priced!!!!!

Robert M.

Yelp
3rd time, disappointed again. it is so unfortunate to say I will never go back, I only live a few blocks way, and I am strapped for options. wouldn't even know where to begin with specifics, that's how bad it's been all 3 times.

Yelp
Had the Rib Tip Dinner, the meat was tender and the rub on it is delicious. I had the sauce on the side and that too was delightful. I felt like I could've sauced it up and made it more savory, but dry is great too. I did enjoy it all with a fulfilling amount to eat and I will go back to try more menu items, for sure.

Dee S.

Yelp
I had the Tip and link combo and it taste like the meat was boiled. Completely bland, no smoke or seasoning. Customer service was good but not good enough for me to return.

Leslee P.

Yelp
Stop by and be impressed. I see some posts complaining, they are brand new, working out the kinks! The food was nothing short of amazing. We enjoyed it so much we ordered a second round to share with friends and family. The generous portions fed us for a couple of days. There was lots of flavor and sauce in every bite. Everyone working was super friendly and helpful. It was honestly difficult to narrow down our food choices. We are planning to bring some BBQ to tailgate before Sox Games. Can't wait to try the pizza or the nachos on our next visit!

Angela H.

Yelp
I was excited to try this restaurant from all the hype on Instagram, but I'm HIGHLY DISAPPOINTED! The brisket mac and cheese was so BLAND, the Mac and cheese was flavorless, no cheese in sight, brisket was cooked well but no smoke or bbq flavor, the bacon was the only thing that had a taste. The ribs tips has the nerve to have a burnt char on smoke or grill flavor, they were baked not grilled, the fries were greasy and undercooked. Never again, but I blame myself because I didn't see a grill nor did smell one, I'm sorry but this place is definitely not recommended! The only positive thing is the service was good the lady was very pleasant.

Eddie M.

Yelp
This place was amazing goood service, food fulfilling and delicious.

Yelp
Nice environment, staff was friendly! I had the buttermilk fried chicken wings and I really enjoyed them. I liked the flakey breading. I will definitely be back to try other menu items!!

Warren J R.

Yelp
Went here on the grand opening to support this black owned restaurant. The service was a bit slow, the menu was limited, and the staff seemed to be a bit overwhelmed by the number of customers during the lunch rush. The food taste was average (I had the tip/wing combo) more sauce would be welcomed. I expect everything to get better for this spot with more time and experience.

Rowena C.

Yelp
I wasn't hungry when I passed by. But the smell of cheesy beef brisket pizza told me got to have one. And I enjoyed it. I now have more places for my lunch Selection now. by Rowe 3/10 10 pm

Derrick F.

Yelp
My tips were extremely burnt and had a piece of cardboard included inside. Very disgusting! Never going back! I wanted to give 0 stars but apparently have give at least 1.

Chiquita M.

Yelp
Where do I start first and foremost let me start by saying that I am a small black business owner, so I like to support my own because I understand the atrocities of running a business. Prior to me purchasing items, I checked the reviews which were not great. However, I decided to try them to form my own opinion. The food is TRASH‼‼‼ I should have listened to the reviews because I'm out of 40$ and they do not give refunds, which is another kryptonite I do not like about black businesses. I was under the impression that the ribs would be smoked, however they were baked. The picture on their page shows ribs on a grill however there isn't even grill inside the restaurant. So where did they smoke themthe fries weren't even cooked all the way through, the chicken didn't have any seasoning and the brisket with macaroni was nasty and also had no seasoning nothing was seasoned‼‼‼ So save y'all MONEY please believe the reviews.. THE FOOD IS TRASHHHHHHHHHH

Davine C.

Yelp
I had the brisket pizza slice. It was very good, I think I would have liked it even better if the drizzle bbq sauce was the base of the pizza instead of the tomato sauce. Maybe they will try that one day. When ordering, the lady informed us of a lunch special they had, 2 slices and fries for $10. It was enough to last two days. I would go back again and try another menu item.

Maria H.

Yelp
It's just ok Turkey leg was overcooked and no sauce to add flavor hopefully things will improve since they are so new. Customer service was great however!

Chris C.

Yelp
I ordered the wing and rib combo and it was great. I will definitely to try some of the other items on the menu.

Roy T.

Yelp
Not the best service is ok food was not that good ambiance is ok. Don't know if I'm going back. Maybe.

Yelp
this place is absolutely great!!! the food was delicious and tender!!! i had a chicken and rib combo and the portion was sharable!! ( even though i didn't want to cuz it was so good!!) the chicken taste like love it was so tender and good!! the ribs were fall off the bone fantastic!!! i'm happy to find this hidden gem!!! you will be happy too!!!

Chausse9 M.

Yelp
So my co workers and I decided to try Bell Heirs Bbq for lunch but straight to the point our rib tips had no smoke or bbq flavor tasted baked and they were burnt, our turkey leg was bland burnt and covered in this tasteless Mac and cheese the fries were greasy and the sauce was gritty. We called to speak with a supervisor and tell them how bad our order was the young lady was combative and telling me all of they're meats are smoked. We spent 114.00$ on this horrible meal and was told Tyrie would return my call never got a call .but this food is horrible do not waste your money. I knew when I walked in the door a huge NO REFUND sign is on the window and that's because they sell a bogus product. The publicity from the news and tik tok had to be fake .

Daryl M.

Yelp
I wanted to really like this place but I just couldn't. Bland and without taste would be the best way to describe the tips. Not even a hint of hickory, smoke or just bbq upon entering the establishment, guess that was my 1st que.Hope they succeed but don't see the happening...good luck.

Love this place one of the best BBQ with a twist in Chicago. It had moisture in the chicken and Mac and cheese with brisket was off the chain. The staff was very friendly
