Best Restaurants in Newington Green | Eater London

"Next to the Unitarian Church on the north side of the green, Belle Epoque is a classic French café, delicatessen and bakery. Quiches, filled baguettes and typically French salads (goat’s cheese, nicoise, chicken) are all fine, but the patisserie is a few levels beyond that. When it opened in 2002, everything was baked in the basement. Now, with a second location on Upper Street and a counter at Selfridges, production is centralised elsewhere. The switch from quirky local bakery to pro kitchen shouldn’t deter, though, as glossy, highly decorated mini-tarts catch the eye and taste as good as they look, and the classic lemon, pistachio and apricot tarts at the counter never disappoint." - Ed Smith

This cafe is located across from Newington Green, near Canonbury, about a 10-15 mins walk from Canonbury Station. The cafe offers a small amount of outdoor seating, and there is plenty of seating inside as well, creating a nice atmosphere. They sell a variety of Italian pastries and cakes. We ordered a Flat White, chocolate cake, chocolate flan custard tart, and hot peppermint tea. While the chocolate cake was enjoyable, the overall quality of the food and drinks was quite average. Unfortunately, the flan tart was quite disappointing and not very enjoyable. Overall, it was a mixed experience, and I hope for better next time!

This place is a masterclass in French patisserie, everything looks flawless, but the flavours? Even better. . We tried their bestsellers: 🥇 Iconic Paris-Brest (£5.25) ✨ Silky praline tart 🍫 Fruity Chocoframboise 🎾 Plus a cheeky Wimbledon special that stole the show! . 📍 Belle Époque, N5 2LL 🚇 Closest station: Highbury & Islington 💷 Most patisserie: ~£6.50

Best Patisserie & Pastry Treats in London Wanted to say thank you to the owner & staff here. It's simply the best in London. Easily a cut above the rest. Better than the chains or any of the independents. Firstly, the actual pastry is more delicious. Not sure how, but trust me on this. Especially warmed on low in the air fryer at home for 5 min. Though eating in the cafe with a coffee is always a win. Secondly, every item has that special balance of flavour and texture. A stand-out dish is the signature "Belle Epoque" Which is Orange, dark chocolate, praline...OMG. Trust me, just order one. Or any of the pastry tarts. Perhaps the chocolate fruit tart; Or any of the frangipanes. Peach or chocolate cherry or mixed berry. The almond & chocolate croissants are spectacular too. I count calories, eat one meal a day... yes, occasionally only treats...naughty... & am careful with cash due to necessity. Which means the choice of treats I eat is extremely important to me. No alcohol either as am sober. It's all about the treats. Forgive photos as pastries get bounced on my bicycle & stored in my fridge for as long as I can hold back. If it's important you get the best in London, Without a doubt, that's at Belle Epoque.

The atmosphere is good and provide a nice space to have a chat with friends. A bit disappointed as the ratings are quite good and we would expect the pastries to be great. However we ordered the pistachios eclair which tasted nothing like pistachios and it’s very sweet with the white chocolate fillings (i would expect the fillings with pistachios paste?) and the croissant was cold and soft (not crispy anymore)

Beautiful cakes, beautiful renovation with comfy seating and decent sized tables. Cakes are extraordinarily beautiful especially at the patisserie. Paris Brest was exceptional. Lovely friendly staff who served to our table.

I am a regular customer and couldn’t recommend a better place for cake and coffee on Upper Street. There are so many absolutely scrumptious cakes (my favourite is the Paris Brest which gives the best taste of hazelnuts), one of the richest selection of patisserie you can find in only the best bakeries, as well as other baked goods including the breads which are very high quality and have no additives. I recommend slicing the bread at home and placing in freezer to keep fresh, so that you can carry on eating for days.

One of the best patisseries in London! I have been going to this cafe for 5 years now and I just wish they were as well in my area, but the pastries they do worth the journey. This year I have ordered my birthday cake from the Paris Brest, and OMG!!! It was so delicious with a rich flavour of hazelnut. While collecting my cake I have decided to stay for breakfast. I shared with my friend the goat cheese quiche which was melting in my mouth, gorgeous pain chocolate and dark chocolate eclair! Everything was very delicious and the staff was super friendly and it was nice to see how they were greeting all the customers and most of them were regular customers as they had such a good rapport with them. On the way home I decided to take as well their new rustic baguette which was so delightful and did survive for long 😁😊 Thank you so much Belle Époque team for being always the best!
