The 26 Best Things Made in Michigan’s Cities | Eater

"Founder Larry Bell’s interest in beer started with yeast when he was working in a Kalamazoo bakery. Soon after homebrewing was legalized, he opened a homebrew supply store and by 1985 was selling his first beer — made in a 15-gallon soup pot. A little less than a decade later he opened the Eccentric Cafe, the first onsite pub at a Michigan brewery, and began distributing their beer throughout the country. Today, Bell’s is one of the oldest craft breweries in the region and brews like Two Hearted Ale and Oberon Ale are national favorites. Take a tour, sip on a pint, and have a bite at the original brewery, or head over to the newer facilities in nearby Comstock." - Vox Creative

Google
I always come to this company with pleasure, I am greeted with respect, it has all the conditions for drivers. The character behaves very nicely, they do the loading / unloading operations as quickly as possible.

Google
Austin was an outstanding tour guide. We had a group visit, each of us was from out of town, out of state, or out of country, but everyone enjoyed it. The history and visit inspired me, a native Michigander, to a new found appreciation for Bell’s beer. The information Austin provided was fun and interesting through and through. He size and scale of the operation is unlike anything you typically see at other places. It was quite impressive. We all would recommend the visit to anyone interested in beer, Michigan history, or just general manufacturing.

Google
I had the opportunity to take a guided tour of the brewery. It was a wonderful experience. Our tour guides demonstrate d excellent knowledge of the brewing process as well as the history of Bell's. Their enthusiasm was infectious and appropriately energetic; the vibe from all the employees seemed very positive. I am a manufacturing process and technology nerd, so I was fascinated by the processes and machinery in action. Would have loved more time to ask questions but they may have been overly detailed to satisfy my curiosity. Bottom line:. It was awesome and I highly recommend a visit.

As Truck Driver it’s a good place to deliver was 2 hours late for my appointment they didn’t hesitate to give a door there then for that I say Kudos! To this place

Google
Most breweries do the same tour as everyone else: talk through the brewing process and show where each part takes place in their facility. While Bell’s still covers these topics they go far beyond just the brewing and packaging process. Depending on the tour, they’ll talk about the history of their beers, their stories, and if you’re lucky you’ll see their hop storage, canning and kegging lines, and maybe even get to do hop sensory by rubbing hops in your hands. Best of all you get some free beer along the way. Unless you work here, the only other reason you’ll be here is for a tour. Highly recommend if you’re in Kalamazoo! Word to the wise, Ubers/cabs are pretty sparse and far away generally the later in the day it gets. Plan accordingly.

Google
This is one of my favorite brewery tours to date! Jeff was our tour guide and my boyfriend and I were the only two people on the tour so he took us down to the hop fields, which we loved. He was really great about answering our questions and giving us a relaxed and casual tour. Loved the beer samples too! Highly recommend this awesome and free tour!

Google
Stopped by over Memorial Day weekend, not realizing this was the actual brewery and not the hangout spot, i.e. the Eccentric Cafe. Brewery looks cool and takes up the whole city block. Only complaint is that they need to learn Flag protocol. US Left, State Center, Logo flag right, or staggered poles with US highest in the center.

Yelp
Great tour! Very knowledgeable staff! Go on a rainy day! It's in a corporate park and not many people attend the tours so you get one on one services

Yelp
I Love coming here for Events great beer and great things! The cafe area is always well kept and food is quickly produced. The Gift shop is always well stocked and the selection of beer is large.

Yelp
I have wanted to come to Bell's for years! It was such a fun atmosphere, and the beer tasted even better at the brewery than in a bottle. I got the new Orange Vanilla Cream Oberon- WOW. I didn't know Oberon could get any better... but it did!! We went on a Saturday during dinner time so it was pretty crowded, but was able to find a table on the inside to sit. There was a ton of super cute outdoor seating in the beer garden, just a little too cold that day. We didn't order any food, but it smelled amazing! So just might have to if I go again sometime.

Yelp
Oberon Eclipse: Although I've become less of a beer guy since my college days, I couldn't resist the urge to pick this up, not because I wanted to drink it, but because I loved the celestial artwork on the bottle (I'm a sucker for the sun, moon, and stars). Oberon introduced this as a winter alternative to their flagship Oberon Ale. Eclipse is slightly stronger at 6.3% ABV and darker. It is a citrus wheat ale with a bright orange and warm coriander citrus flavor. The beer is medium bodied, slightly bitter (20 IBU), and poured a clear/slightly hazy golden orange. Although nothing too special, it was easy enough to drink and I admire the artwork, making this one Doughboy approved Doughboy_Food_Reviews

Yelp
I have had several different beers from Bell's Brewery in the past. For this particular outing I had two beers. One that I had was the Oberon Wheat Ale. To tell you the truth it wasn't my most favorite of wheat beers or from Bell's Brewery. It was a kind of beer where it's okay in a pinch and if there aren't a lot of beer options then it will work. But this beer kind of is a victim of the typical macro brewery size (I have seen their beer for sale all over the country) as it doesn't have the tlc and tailored touch for me to remember it down the road. The beer I liked better was their Lager of the Lakes. I liked this beer a bit better which I don't have a great reason as to why. It is just as prone to the lack of personalized attention as the other but it is what it is and that is what earned the four star rating. It was nice, light, hoppy and with a slight sweetness. Again, this is a macro operation for craft beer and you can really tell. If you want the smaller mom and pop breweries there are plenty of other options in the stare but again, Bell's is fine if in a pinch.

Yelp
4 out of 5 due to how small it is for patrons. They had great, taproom exclusives but we were shocked at how small it was. If you don't get there at 12, I can't imagine what the wait would be like. The store was pretty cool with unique things!

Yelp
Just wanted you guys to know, had bought two six packs of Hop Slam (40bucks)down here in ga. (Bought at turtle creek liquor store in Bethlehem, ga. )and poured them out cause of outdated beer. I'll never buy that world class beer again. Born on dates are more accurate that drink by dates, it's more honest for the consumer and much easier to decide it to buy. What a disappointment and a big let down. Typical big brewery crap without any recourse. Asked Katie to send me one six pack , but I'm sure there will be an excuse. Could have been a real treat at thanksgiving which was the plan this year.

Yelp
Regularly 30 minute lines/queues to get a beer, and 1 beer per customer. Bell's has lost all knowledge, experience and desire to provide good hospitality. They have bad management. Management here seems focused on making annoyance part of the atmosphere to move people out their rotating door rather than welcoming a session of positive drinking. You will find faster, more efficient service at any bar within 30 miles of Kalamazoo metro area. But if you're super into the whole brewery tour thing as I once was, I guess it's 2/10. I enjoyed my visit here in 2006 much more. Back then ridiculously insane lines weren't tolerated by bar management and the atmosphere was better.

Yelp
Not a big craft beer fan but was in the Kalamazoo area and was told if you only go to one brewery then go to Bell's. I was not disappointed! There are two Bell's location. The first is in downtown Kalamazoo and the other is about 7 miles east of downtown and this is the production/distribution center. The tours are at the production/distribution center while food is at the downtown location. We came on a Saturday afternoon and joined the 2pm tour. The building is huge and beautiful. The tour is free and you get four beer tastings throughout the hour tour. Chris was our tour guide and he did a nice job with explaining the history and making the group feel welcomed. The tastings were great. One was a lighter beer that was a beer Larry was experimenting with. Then the other beers were tried and true - Best Brown, Oktoberfest, and Two Hearted. It was awesome to enjoy your beer and see where and how the beer is being made. There is not a whole lot of walking and a lot of the tour is confided within the main area. The only stairs you take is when you enter the building to get to the main level. At the end of the tour they even give you a little goodie bag which was a nice touch. Great brewery, great tour, and after going to Bell's I am a little more understanding and appreciative of craft beers!

Yelp
My husband is a Michigan native and always drinks Bell's, so we thought this would be a fun activity while we were in town. We took the free tour, and you can reserve spots online ahead of time, or just walk in. Our tour guide Sasha was super knowledgeable and gave a great tour. The tour covers the history of Bell's and its founder, and goes through all the steps of how they make beer. You also get 4 free samples of different beers they have on tap!! Our guide Sasha said the Two Hearted we had on tap there is the freshest in the country because it's brewed right in that building. They also gave us a little goodie bag of stickers and pins, which was a nice surprise. Next time we're in town we would definitely take one of the paid "behind the scenes" tours.

Yelp
I came to the Comstock location for their free Brewery Tour. This specific tour is offered Wednesdays - Saturdays: Noon - 5pm & Sundays: Noon - 4pm at the top of every hour. It was a fantastic tour! Our tour guide, Katie, was so knowledgeable and fun! Didn't hurt that we received 3 free beer samples too. It was great to learn about the humble beginnings of Bell's and about each of the beers we sampled. Long live two-hearted!! Definitely a place where I'll be taking my friends and family in the future. 70/365

Yelp
I am a Bell's Brewery OG, the first time I came here was in fall of 1996. We went on a tour of the brewery in the basement (at the time) and Oberon was known as 'Solsun!' Bell's has grown horizontally ever since. Instead of buying out other businesses, they continue to build on their own brand's reputation, an honorable business trait. The food has gotten much better over time, too. It used to be just OK snacks but these days you can get a really good burger/sandwich and fries/onion rings situation that rivals the best from the other side of the state. The memorabilia is everywhere here and you can almost hear the echoed laughs of generations of people just like me who have spent a lot of time here. Back in the day, after the dog show they would let us bring our primped, well behavore, prize winning ribbon-toting show dogs in the beer garden but for whatever reason, those days are over. The gift shop is full of shirts, stickers and well- beer! Pull up a chair and stay awhile at Michigan's most famous microbrewery. They truly made Kalamazoo one of the state's 'Beer Cities' like Ann Arbor, Ludington and Grand Rapids.

Yelp
Did the 5pm tour on Friday and had an amazing time. This is my boyfriend's all time favorite beer so he decided to book the brewery tour as a great way to celebrate his birthday and it was! The tour is free, have 4 different beers to sample from, and no one else showed up for our time so luckily it felt like a private one on one tour. Our tour guide was Jordan, he was so nice, friendly, and super knowledgeable. He took his time with us and answered any questions. He also gave us great tips such as to check out the general store, they have limited availability beers there. AND he also highly recommended checking out the "Eccentric Cafe" in downtown Kalamazoo. This is their bar restaurant which also has an entertainment venue in back. Very cool atmosphere there and based on all of the history we learned from him during the tour we saw little details in the bar/restaurant that reflected that which was pretty cool to recognize. Would do again! Thank you!!! -Tanya & Steve

Yelp
BEST BREWERY EVER. Went on the brewery tour on Dec. 23rd, we were the only 2 on the tour & LOVED IT!! Shelly Clafin, the tour manager was wonderful to work with as it was a gift for my fiancé while we were visiting family for the holidays - tight timelines to work with - thank you!! We were greeted by Micheal, our tour guide for the morning, who took us all over! He was well versed in all Bell's history, branding, brewing knowledge and information - him and my fiancé talked the entire 3 hours plus! Seriously, give this guy a raise - he was wonderful!! We had to of seen every square inch of this place, including the entire new brewing equipment side - we only left because we got hungry lol. We were able to enjoy a few beer samples and got to pick up some fun small swag before leaving - superb brewing experience! Best tip about this place: When arriving, go to the building further down the road, you'll see signs for tour parking - the first building is the offices. Oh and eat before you go! The tour is FREE! then go to the Café downtown for lunch & the corner store for swag! We spent 2 hours at lunch and another hour in the swag store - a whole day of Bells, my fiancé was in heaven!

Yelp
This was an unexpected fantastic tour, and by far the best and most consumer friendly!! I looked at their tour info online and was a little confused. But, one common part is which ever tour you take - they are all FREE! And to boot, they allow two samples of the four on tap. When arriving you, follow the signs down to the second entrance and go upstairs where the hosts are eagerly awaiting your arrival! They will take you down to try the samples first and then begin the tour. It is a lot of information to digest about how this tasty beverage is created, but it is very cool to learn about it all and time will fly! Towards the end we walked back up to the first entrance where the corporate offices and gym are located. They took us to the back to watch how the bottling process works and how the cases are twisted and turned like a Tetris game by a robot, placed on a pallet and then wrapped and ready for shipping. Incredible!! The crazy thing is they are only continuing to grow and grow and grow... TWO HOURS LATER... we were finished! Wow, BELL'S. WOW! Go check this brewery out! And then head over to the General Store and Eccentric Cafe in Downtown Kalamazoo to grab a cold pint or two.

Yelp
If you're in Michigan and you love beers, you've got to check this place out. Bell's is one of the most well known breweries in Michigan, and several of their beers are available in groceries, but there are WAY more options here. There's a ton of seating, both indoor and outdoor, with some food on the menu. This place also has a gift shop in case you want to buy some beers or merch. Definitely would recommend, and if you like unusual beers, I suggest trying the Cucumber Basil Golden Ale

Yelp
We went on the brewery tour and it was so much fun! You learn so much about the history of Bell's and how everything works. If you're a beer enthusiast this is the place for you. We went on the 4pm tour and our guide was Austin and I have to say he was THE BEST! If you plan to go I would recommend calling ahead to see if Austin will be the tour guide. Super cool experience and we will definitely be back!!!

Yelp
I can't believe I hadn't gotten out to the Comstock facility for a tour until yesterday. Bell's Eccentric Day is truly my favorite holiday and I'm such a huge Bell's buff! Bell's has the most interesting history, and its tour guides do such a tremendous job sharing their excitement about Bell's with guests. Our guide yesterday ... I'm blanking but I'm pretty sure his name was Gary ... is an life-long friend of owner Larry Bell, so his perspective was especially interesting. It's fantastic that they offer these tours for free (we recently toured Cantillion Brewery in Belgium and paid 7 euros for a self-guided tour with a brief introduction from a docent.) I think they do a great job of keeping things equally interesting for the casual beer drinker, the enthusiast, and the home-brewer (all of whom were represented in our group). I would definitely go again in a year or two as well, because Bell's has been so consistently spreading its wings lately there will always be something new to see. While I learned a lot more about Bell's history on this tour than on the one downtown, we really loved the interactivity of the downtown tour and the special opportunity to taste some rarer beers (like Captain Long Haul, a rum-barrel aged variant of Black Note), so it was tad bit of a let-down to only get to try two tastes of the guests' choice of 4 of Bell's best-known beers. Most of the crowd doubled up on the Hopslam, while I did a Hopslam and a Double Cream Ale.

Yelp
I'm giving a lower review than I would originally would due to the service at the front desk. We also booked a tour of the brewry which was a huge disappointment. Tour: The tour is FREE, so I shouldn't complain, but I will. When we started the first question we were asked was, "Would you like to purchase a beer to take on the tour with you?" Um, okay. I've never been on a brewry tour before and I anticipated that we would receive samples, but that isn't the case here. Two rooms - one is super HOT and the other is milder HOT. Not much to see and definitely TOO much information for one to handle. CAFE: The beer is cold. That is the BIG PLUS. We were told by the front desk to go to the LOFT - it's open seating and a server will meet you and take your order. Okay. But we went up there - 8 of us (hard to ignore) and waited. Not only was it HOTTER upstairs in the Loft, but there were NO servers...so we went back down and apprehended a table and pulled up our own stools. There still wasn't enough chairs for all of us. We ordered 2 flights of beers and the glasses were super small, but we sampled anyway. Plus we got a couple appetizers. Way overpriced in my opinion. But - the BEER was cold! I would not go back - but if you haven't been - you should try the beer at least!!!

Neil B.

Yelp
Enjoying a Light Hearted Ale here in Brunswick, Maryland. My first sampling is an assortment of different Bell's IPAs in a 12 pack I picked up; I've enjoyed all of them thus far. Excellent work! Looking forward to trying more.

Yelp
Really cool tour if you are in the area! Did I mention it was free with 4 beer samples included? About an hour long and very informative. Michael our tour guide was very good with questions and also very friendly. Note that you can't come here and buy a beer - have to go downtown for that one.
google avatar

Jessica A.

Yelp
Great free brewery tour with very enthusiastic crew! Great history and very clean place! You will get a lot of beer to taste for free! Cheers! Plenty parking spaces!
google avatar

Lauren F.

Yelp
We loved every second of our tour at Bell's. Our tour guide was so well informed about everything from history, branding, brewing and even gave some helpful tips about home brewing! The best part about the tour is that it was free! We even received 3 samples on the tour which never hurts either! Would definitely recommend a tour here if you are ever in Michigan!
google avatar

Ryan R.

Yelp
Always been a fan of Two Hearted. I grew up in Michigan but live in Las Vegas now. I was recently home visiting family and we finally got a chance to tour the Comstock facility. I kept waiting for a catch on this tour. HOW was this free? We had Austin for our guide and he was the man. Got to see the whole process and even tour the bottling side and see some Oberon heading out to world. Man, I can not recommend this tour enough. Do yourself a favor and make the trek over. The original brewery and store (Eccentric Cafe) are only about 7 miles away. So make sure to check that out after your tour for some great food and limited release beers as well. This was a serious highlight on our brew tour this past week. Thank you Bell's for stayed if true to your roots and letting us behind behind the "curtain" and the leaders of the "unfiltered" world.

Yelp
To start off, Bell's is one of my favorite breweries. I've loved their two-hearted ale for for almost a decade now. This was my first in the Kalamazoo area, so I had to stop in. There was no choice. The original brewery is no longer in commission, but they give tours of it and talk about the history. Highly recommend signing up and learning a little more about this great brewery. Grab a beer in each hand, it's not too long so two should hold you over. I ended trying to of their small batches and my two-hearted. Of their small batches the honey-hearted, a 16.1% abv, was my favorite. Not too sweet, but a heavy hitter for sure. Didn't get a chance to try the food, but it seemed okay. Would have loved to spend the whole day here, especially since it was gorgeous out. Would come back in two heart beats!
google avatar

Mandy N.

Yelp
Bells is a well known brewery and lives up to its name. The beer garden was an absolute dream and the beer is even better. Super cool environment to chill and have a good beer. A must go if you're looking for beer in the area.
google avatar

Joy G.

Yelp
Josh from Bell's brewery absolutely saved the day at the untappd beer festival in Charlotte, NC. He was at the festival representing Bells. The event was rained out and he personally provided beer to many of us. The beer was outstanding. We love Josh!!!!!
google avatar

Armand A.

Yelp
My tour of Bell's Comstock Brewery was very informative. The guide, Katie, was very enthusiastic and knowledgable. She provided a clear overview of brewing including the raw materials and the production process. The plant is very attractive. The tour included two samples among 4 widely distributed beers. We unfortunately were unable to see the bottling facilities on this tour and I look forward to coming back for the behind the scenes tour. It would also have been more fun to have been offered a unique beer.
google avatar

Sheri B.

Yelp
Very busy place decent beer. Nothing out of this world but good. Food was average but delivered quickly.
google avatar

Ty M.

Yelp
Robin gave such an informative tour! Tasting grains with an explanation is pure genius/Michigan! Hour tour at our leisure, on the hour, again, great idea! I learned so much today , gonna check out the cafe & Bell's store!!!
google avatar

Dwain H.

Yelp
We took a weekend to go to Michigan, primarily to go to bells. When in the store I noticed that they have home brew kits of their beers. I purchased a two hearted ale kit,and when I got back home and opened it I noticed that the malt was uncracked. I stoped at local brew supply stores to see if they could help me out, with no luck at the supply stores I called bells up to see if they could do anything for me. I live three hours plus from Kalamazoo, so they sent me a new kit with cracked grain and a return sticker for the kit I had purchased. Kit came in two days, so my planed brew day was not delayed. The people at bells are more than helpful, and very concerned about fixing a problem that wasn't really their problem. I am very thankful for what bells did for me. Outstanding customer service.
google avatar

Davarcus P.

Yelp
I love this place. Local, good service, great beer. not sure what else you could ask for! This is the barometer that I judge all breweries by, and I have judged a lot! No matter what kind of beer you drink, you are gauranteed to find something to please here. Think you tried it all? Come back next season for more amazing selections. They never cease to amaze me, which is why they continue to grow.
google avatar

Ian P.

Yelp
Nice, casual atmosphere here. Bell's is a serious brewery...it has 3 of the top 50 beers on RateBeer's top 50. That being said, they have a lot of what I call "mainstream" beers that are most definitely not on the list. I really like the atmosphere here. Beautiful spacious back patio/lawn with almost nowhere to sit. It's such a great space, why not add a few more picnic tables? The interior is also nice. It's pretty casual. You line up to order beer. You line up to order food. You line up to bus your own table. They do a brewery tour, but we missed it...sad. Great stop on a Michigan brewery tour. By the way, Kalamazoo near the brewery feels pretty dodgy. I would not leave valuables in my car here.
google avatar

Kelly S.

Yelp
(This review is for the Comstock Brewery.) We absolutely LOVED our tour and tour guide, Austin. He was super knowledgeable about all things beer, especially home brewing. We got two free samples during the tour and tons of free swag to take home. Best of all, it was free! We made a reservation ahead of time, and the doors opened 15mins before our 2pm tour.
google avatar

Benjamin A.

Yelp
2 of my top 5 favorite beers come from here. This company does everything a craft brewery should.
google avatar

Spencer P.

Yelp
Surprised based on their success, time in business and the recent trend of other breweries updating their tap rooms that this place seemed a little small to me. Not that I cared and sometimes small is what makes some of these places charming. Is the food as good as Founders? It's an afterthought here, but I came here for the beer and wasn't disappointed. Their Two Hearted is one of the top rated beers in the country and that alone, fresh, is worth the trip. What impressed me was that their beer list wasn't the typical list of pils, lager, pale ale, IPA and stout - they had a lot of funky and experimental beers that made it a fun and different experience. MI continues to create some fantastic beers and is becoming a powerhouse in the craft beer world. Bell's are considered one of the early founders of the new appreciation of craft beers in the Midwest and like others in the industry, I'm happy for Bell's success in making great beer.

Yelp
Had a good time on the tour with Joe this afternoon. Fortunately I was the only person touring so we were only held up by my stupid questions.
google avatar

Nathan J.

Yelp
We had family visiting from out of town so we took them to Bell's. Our tour guide was Marin and she did a fabulous job! She did really well educating is on the beer making process and told the company story. It's not a long tour but it was very personal and they poured free samples of four beers. Pretty good for a free tour! Full disclosure here: I live 5 minutes away and already love Bell's. I would drive a lot further if I had to. In short it's a great tour, for free, by friendly people giving you free beer.
google avatar

Erin K.

Yelp
Got to walk around the brewery and explore. Free stickers and pins. The person at the front desk was very helpful. We went to the cafe to eat after!

Yelp
Best of the Best Two Hearted

Corine S.

Yelp
I went with a group of 10 other people on the free tour of the Comstock Brewery. Loved it and Austin our tour guide did a great job explaining the history and the brewing process. Super clean. Highly recommend it. Tour is about an hour or so. It's free and you can sample two beers and they also have other free items like bumper stickers, pins, chapstick and coasters. Don't know if that's always around but we were happy Bell's converts. It's a Family owned brewery with Yummy beer. I plan to go to the downtown Kalamazoo spot at my next visit.

Yelp
Sasha was a great guide who really knows her subject. I went from the tour to their General Store and pub. These folks know what they are doing.

Yelp
Amazing first time here! We loved the atmosphere and the people. The beers were all great too

Yelp
Drank Bells Two Hearted for years before making a pilgrimage to the brewery. I was not disappointed, fun, great food, all in all a great place

Yelp
This is one of my favorite brewery's (and I have been to many across the U.S). The indoor space is beautiful, they have a huge beer menu sure to satisfy any taste, the food is creative and tasty, they have great live bands and a very cool outdoor space! We will be back...often!

Karen S.

Yelp
We were super excited to visit because we've always liked Bells beer and order it frequently in restaurants. Our visit did not go well at all. The problem was the server behind the bar. She was surly and confrontational. My husband tried to buy two beers and she refused to serve him that many (he's 56). He was buying the 2nd for the obviously disabled grandma we brought with us, sitting on a stool away from the bar. The bartender lady could see her from the bar, but said he could only buy one unless she came up to get one. Husband explained that it would be very hard for her to walk up and back, but she was smug and dismissive. Then we bought poutine and asked our 18 year old daughter to help us carry it back to the table from the bar (two adults to get two beers plus daughter). She scolded us, thinking we were going to give one of our beers (two of us now up there in our 50s, plus the daughter) to our underage daughter. She made her go back and we made two trips to/from the bar for the beer and poutine. I think she needs to take a lesson in reasonable thinking and hospitality. Never going back. Don't even want to order Bells on any menu in any State we visit due to this experience. Spoiled the taste for us.
