The 26 Best Things Made in Michigan’s Cities | Eater

"Promising some of the best Tex-Mex food in Grand Rapids, Beltline Bar has a very distinct claim to fame: It’s said that the wet burrito was first created here in 1966. A wet burrito is not your typical handheld variety. Instead, an oversized ground beef burrito is covered with red chile sauce and melted cheese; a knife and fork are a must. While the wet burrito is their biggest draw, Beltline also feature tacos, fajitas, margaritas, and more. Michigan may border Canada, but Beltline offers a taste of the Southern border up north." - Vox Creative

Out of towner and decided to give this a try. Husband had enchiladas and I had a wet burrito. Side of guacamole and loaded nachos for apps. The gauc was brown no seasoning and old. The nachos were just ok huge portions tho. Wet burrito was just ok and my husband did not care for his enchiladas said bland and tasted like no seasoning. The blackberry margaritas were great and so was our waitress. Infact she was very pleasant and on point. We did take several boxes of food when we left although not sure we will it a second chance cold.

Google
A Grand Rapids staple for delicious tex/mex. Been eating at Beltline Bar all of my 38 years on this earth. Stopped in over the weekend with my Mom and enjoyed our visit. While both of us have had multiple items on their menu over the years this time she had the Baja Peninsula Combo and I had the Fiesta Combo. Reasonably priced, quick service, delicious drinks, large portions, amazing wet burritos and chimi's. The fried ice cream is to die for! You can't go wrong with this place if you're looking for tex/mex. TRY IT!

Google
Cyd is by far the best server to have when you visit! She is quick and so kind! I recommend requesting her if she’s there! I also noticed a new busser, her name was Sheryl and she offered to bring us more chips and salsa, and she cleaned our table when she noticed we were done with our app & entrees. She was also so sweet and quick.

Google
Best burrito of my life! E tra friendly staff and a very fast kitchen. Food is amazing 10/10 the salsa was so good there was barely room left for te burrito. They are famous for a reason

Google
Server: Angry with our server. She spent waaaay more time sitting in a booth, three booths in front of mine, visiting with her friends/family. Numerous times we had to go up and tap her shoulder to get attention. Atmosphere: Totally dated Prices: horrible! They nickel and dime you for everything. Extra cheese, guacamole, onions, jalapeño’s and sour cream. When we FINALLY got our checks, I inquired about our 3% “surcharge”. Waitress told us they’ve been charging this for atleast two years on EVERY guest check and still NOT using it to repair the ripped booths, decor, and chairs. Wait, whAAAT?!?! Am I paying the 3% surcharge for?!?! For two years?! Every guest check?!?! Not happy! Food: was awesome as always. Wait, a double the regular size of a famous wet burrito exist!

Google
The wet burritos here are very flavorful and extremely good!! It's a well-established Mexican restaurant in Greater Grand Rapids. Totally worth it!

Yelp
I've been dining at beltline bar more frequently recently and their wet burritos have really been hitting the spot. They have great $10-$12 lunch special options. I'm typically here on break from work so if I'm dining in somewhere it needs to be fairly quick and it's always efficient when I'm here!

Yelp
For lunch, my dad took me to this no-frills Tex Mex spot. It's a large restaurant with friendly service and a big menu. Famous for their wet burritos, Beltline Bar has good chips and salsa. To drink, I got their frozen margarita and sangria. It was refreshing!

Yelp
This place is a exactly the way it was in the 90's. It's not what i'd call authentic Mexican, more Americanized and is very filling. All of this was about $25.00, you get plenty of chips for a couple of people which is average price these days. They do put an automatic 3% onto your bill for market fluctuations, (pure profit for the owners) not sure how I feel about that as a person who runs a food service establishment but I don't think that would prevent me from returning.

Serita P.

Yelp
LOVE when I see Marissa behind the bar!!! drinks are amazing & food is always great!!

Adina G.

Yelp
The bartendwr Marissa is very nice. She pays attention to our orders and can multi-task without being rude. Will be back.

Hey T.

Yelp
Another example of a restaurant that once was a legend and now is just an open sore. There's a real art to making a good wet burrito, and this place used to be the standard. What it is now, is a soggy flour shell with bland meat and a little bit of lettuce and cheese. The sauce still looks familiar but the overall taste of the burrito just isn't what it used to be. Thankfully, we dined in on the $10 special day, because I would not pay a dollar more for it ever. It's a real shame. Won't return.

Pierce A.

Yelp
The wet burritos here are the best without a doubt. The portions are great for the cost. The ambiance of the place is always pleasant and more than that the people there are great. I frequent a few times a month and always try to get the best server in the place, Mary, to wait our table. She's Got a great sense of humor, remembers our names, checks often in case we need anything, works hard to ensure you're having a good experience, and most of all she's an awesome person who is nothing but authentic. Big shoutout to Mary for being part of the reason we always come back.

Oliviya R.

Yelp
Marissa is the best bartender I've ever encountered. She's personable and fast, can handle a full bar and still provide excellent service. Will return just for her

Yelp
Get your drinks out before your appetizer is finished. Get rid of the 3% a Covid surcharge. The pandemic is long over.

Yelp
I had a wonderful experience here because my server Marissa went above and beyond to make sure we had a great date night

Emma C.

Yelp
By far my favorite mexican place in Grand Rapids. The staff here are incredibly nice and really care about the customers and food. Everything we've had on the menu has been wonderful.
google avatar

Lauren R.

Yelp
What can I say...had a delicious taco salad and Margarita flight. The only better than the food, was the delightful bartender, Heather. Great atmosphere, would recommend!

Sumita B.

Yelp
Lifelong GR resident and this place has been in business for a long time. This place is known for their wet burrito. Chips and salsa are not complimentary. This place serves Tex-Mex. Portion sizes are large. Service was great for us the night we went. Get the margarita flight!
google avatar

Francis G.

Yelp
My wife is from Grand Rapids and she grew up going to the Beltline Bar. A visit to GR is not complete without stoping here for dinner. Food and service are always great.

Bob D.

Yelp
Food was great. Mary was our server and she was fantastic. Burritos were delicious as usual.

Yelp
Came in for a quick lunch. Fun atmosphere. Bartender (Heather?) was super friendly and chatty. Food was great. Will be back soon.

Yelp
We stopped in for lunch, Were greeted right away. friendly folks. Great waitress. We got chips and salsa. the chips were good , the salsa was ok, Lacking heat. even the "hot" selection. We got the Nachos, chicken. Fried beef tacos, and Beef chimichanga. lemonade and water. Total bill with 20% tip 61 bucks. For three people at lunch is a bit pricey. the food was good but not memorable. the service was great. D

Yelp
Visiting Grand Rapids for the weekend, this was my husband's choice, a staple in the neighborhood, full of memories from when he would visit his grandma in Grand Rapids, but apparently it is not as good as he remembers. Atmosphere is wonderful, festive and fun, felt like I was in Chi Chi's. Service was excellent, even on Cinco De Mayo weekend, service was attentive and fast. Margarita flight on the rocks was amazing, food was just ok. I ordered the Taco Salad, and my husband ordered the Beltline combo. Meat didn't have a whole lot of flavor, and the rice was bland/dry. We also thought the chips/salsa were included at the table to find a charge on the bill after, no biggie, but most Mexican restaurants include them. Chips were good, salsa again lacked some flavor.

Yelp
The place was busy when we went and the parking lot was full. There was a 25 minute wait until we got seated. The staff was very friendly getting us a seat and seating us. That's where things went a bit sideways. The waitress was friendly but might have been new. She appeared to be struggling getting things done. Our drinks were never brought in a timely manner and it seemed to take forever to get our drinks we had ordered 20 minutes prior. We then get the news that the frozen Margarita flights we ordered are no longer available. So about 30 minutes after sitting, we got waters and now no drinks. Luckily we placed our food order when we placed our drink order. When the food arrived, it was good. The salad that was ordered was colorful was visually appealing. The shrimp on the salad was seasoned well and cooked perfectly. The salad was less than stellar. The lettuce has bits that appeared to be on the verge of badness. The chicken enchilada and beef burrito plate was much better than the salad, which might have been my error in getting a salad at a Mexican restaurant. The chicken enchilada was moist and flavorful. The burrito was even better. The beans had plenty of cheese and were not dry. I would definitely get this plate again. The salad not so much. This might be a last for the bar but I can't say for sure.

Yelp
I want so badly to give this place more stars! It has a lot of nostalgia for me by its certainly not the same as it used to be. What happened to the homemade chips? The food was fine but not very flavorful. Waitstaff may have been new, which is fine but again not a fantastic experience. Staff was pretty friendly. There's a lot of competition in GR with such a rich Latinx community, we will probably try some place new next time. Sorry Beltline.

Kimberly E.

Yelp
The food was excellent as always; a couple of us had the Famous, a couple had the chicken chimi. We had great service from Kay; the order was 100% correct, hot, and prompt. She was very friendly, too. We'll be back soon!
google avatar

Abigail C.

Yelp
Kayla is fantastic! Came in from out of town to visit my sister and we brought a big group. She couldn't have been nicer, brought our drinks quickly, and everything was accurate. The trifecta! Queso and seven layer dip were awesome. A throwback to my childhood coming here for special occasions.

Mitch A.

Yelp
Yikes, the food is so bad! I ordered 3 enchiladas and tried to finish one but didn't want the other 2 because they tasted so bad. The presentation looked like a child prepared it. See the disaster of a picture. I would not recommend this restaurant as there are a lot of other better options in the area. The bartender was "making" margaritas from a mix from a bucket. She was nice and professional, though!

Dan F.

Yelp
Atmosphere has always been so cool. The famous burritos are excellent and everything my family has ever eaten here has been great! Portions are BIG. Service is outstanding and in particular Rylee who is exceptional at her job, interacting with guests and staff in a truly special way. Staff were all top notch, having fun and making this place a great place to have dinner. Keep it up as always!!
google avatar

Mike E.

Yelp
This used to be my wife's favorite place many years ago when we first got together. She always requested we go there ..... so today we went for nostalgia sake . I will say the bar, tables chairs etc are still the same ... the food though not anywhere near what we remember. The chips used to be served hot with seasoned salt, now they are out of a Bag and not great quality. The hot salsa was ok and the regular way too sweet . The famous wet burrito just doesn't stack up to so many others in west Michigan like the Tip a Few in Grand Haven . It was a walk back in time entering and the margarita for 5 bucks at happy hour was tasty , our server was excellent but the rest just meh......

Yelp
A hopping, local watering hole, the Beltline Bar serves a lot of Tex-Mex-like cuisine. Wildly popular, packed even mid-week, this food meets the needs of the populace with a bang! I say "Tex-Mex-like" to be clear about the flavor profile you'll find here. Unlike the offerings I've tasted across Mexico, in Austin TX, and up and down California, this is sauced more with enchilada spices (ancho chili powder, tomatos, cumin, garlic, onion, and brown sugar) then I've typically encountered. Not bad, just different. We started through the very extensive menu while chowing down on the guacamole & chips. Slightly less salty than I was expecting, with thin chips (unlike house-made from tortillas) none was left by tree time we ordered. Lexy knew her menu, proffered good suggestions, and we were off! The Big & Famous wet burrito, with carnitas instead of beef, was satisfying, cheesy, and filling. Ditto with the regular with ground beef. Not many beans, which may be how you like it. The deep-fried ice cream was a great way to finish off the meal, the cinnamon chips a wonderful textural contrast to the chocolate and caramel! Also very good things were said about the margaritas!

Yelp
Being in Grand Rapids MI which was not really part of a work travel plan, my great realtor and gaming friend takes me to a unique TexMex place that does their burrito WET, something I would never find in my burrito state of TX. Amazing experience at this place that invented this specialty in the 60's. Ambience and service were great. Now I have an eats place I could call uniquely MI when I visit the area.
google avatar

Jacquelyn C.

Yelp
Been looking for a place to drink margaritas with the girls and Kayla couldn't have made it better; nobody went thirsty or hungry at our table. Looking forward to our next visit (in her section).

Ang J.

Yelp
The waitress was excellent! Friendly and helpful. We ordered drinks but they were out of pineapple mixer. We ordered gluten free items but they were out of some things. The air conditioning was broken so it was hot in the building. The food was good, for three people the bill was about $120, which seemed a little expensive for the amount/quality. We will go back again to try a few other things on Tuesday menu.

Mindy K.

Yelp
Stopped in for dinner after the movies. Eli was our server!! What an amazing human. I would come back just for Eli!!
google avatar

Jason L.

Yelp
My wife and I came here a few weeks back and had a pretty good experience. We came in on a Saturday for dinner and although it was busy, we were seated within 5-10 minutes. I wish I could remember our server's name but she was pretty good at her job. Took our drink orders, made recommendations on things (appetizers, for instance), and set expectations on wait times (IE: the bartender was backed up so drinks would take a little bit). We ordered some chips and salsa, along with a couple wet burritos. Food was good, as expected, albeit maybe a little smaller than I remember. The one thing I would mention is the 3% surcharge at the bottom of the check - if you're not paying attention, you'll miss it. I asked our server, who supposedly went and asked the manager. I guess it's a 3% flat on all checks since they claim they didn't raise prices. No biggie, but you should inform people in advance of something like that. It feels like an arbitrary money grab vs. having to understand at the end of the transaction. Maybe put it on your menus or something. Regardless, we paid the bill and asked for change for a larger bill to leave a cash tip. I'd come back - the atmosphere is decent, and the food and service were both good. Thanks for providing an enjoyable experience.

Yelp
This is a really good place to go and hangout. I came here after being on the road, going to tiki bar, checking into shitty motel down the road. I burned a joint and saw the sign and decided to eat here. Very good choice in my life.

Tom D.

Yelp
Let me tell you about THE best server I have ever had. Eli is super energetic and just gives off the best vibe. It was to the point we said we wanted to adopt! Every passing was a quick do you need anything and genuinely wanted everyone to have a wonderful meal. Eli, you made us feel so loved and our dinner at the Legendary Beltline Bar was bar none, the best.

Solange G.

Yelp
Marissa is the best bartender by far!! always on top of drinks & food! Great service and memorable laughs !

Lucas L.

Yelp
The low ratings and low star average here are genuine. Consider this one to skip. Or do it once, just to say you did. We were thoroughly unimpressed. It was actually quite worn out, funky, lackluster, and unnecessarily hot inside. I think "inventing the wet burrito" was the last time they were truly interesting. We can say we've been there, but "meh" to ever going back. There was nothing special or outstanding about this place, the staff was clearly uninterested in any level of excitement or enthusiasm for their claim to fame as a destination, and the food was very solidly average and not impressive.

James B.

Yelp
Having been a waiter years ago, I was so impressed not only with the food, but also the incredible service. Eli was amazing. I will DEFINITELY go back!!!!

Amber Z.

Yelp
Been coming here since I was little, Had food delivered tonight and it was great until I found a hair half way through. The leftovers I planned on having will be thrown out. So much for 30 dollars worth of food.

John M.

Yelp
This bar used to have great food. Visited this past Saturday with my wife and all i can say it's a filthy nasty has been. the booth leaned really bad and the food was just disgusting. Stale unsalted chips and salsa. I wanted mexican style taco's and asked the waiter if it had cilantro on them, and was told they don't have cilantro. Really? I thought it was a mexican place? I can assure you i was pretty grossed out by this place and will never return. their days of being a great place are long gone.
google avatar

Becky H.

Yelp
This is a common meeting spot for my family and my in-laws as its fairly close off the highway and about half way. Between us and them. We usually get chips and cheese to start which is pretty fantastic. Melted cheese on chips, sorta like nachos without all the extra stuff. We walked in and no one was in the front. Granted it was 4:00, so not a typical meal time. A few servers passed us a standing there and said nothing. Finically a guy rushed by looking frantic and told us he'd be back in a minute to seat us. Meanwhile there were quite a few servers just standing aRound at he bar! I got the chicken fajitas which they said came out hot- which fajitas should do, but they really weren't super hot. The side of guacamole and salsa, lettuce and shredded cheese was very generous. The chicken wasn't the best I've ever had, but wasn't the worst either.

Jen W.

Yelp
The food was very good and I 100% recommend the apple burrito for dessert. Without a single doubt, the best part of the meal was our server. Eli came over often to make sure we had everything we needed, brought out everything we asked for right away despite being busy on a Saturday night, and was very friendly and knowledgeable. Eli was the best server I have had in a long time!

Deb B.

Yelp
Kayla, our server was amazing, she had a smile on her face from the moment she came to our table. food is the best Mexican food in town.

Jose V.

Yelp
Love stopping in after work for late happy hour. The beer and food deals are great, and the bartenders have all been so kind and warm and accommodating. Special shout out and recognition to Billy, Cammie and Marissa for always giving one bazillion percent to provide the best service!

Tanya L.

Yelp
Kay (Kayla A) is the best bartender ever! If you're ever in the area, stop in and see her!
