"This is truly a special one, a hotel worth a pilgrimage for anyone at all with an interest in art and architecture. Located on a tiny, isolated island in the Inland Sea, Benesse House is essentially a collaboration between the billionaire art collector Soichiro Fukutake and the Pritzker prize–winning architect Tadao Ando, with major works and site-specific installations by everyone from Jackson Pollock to James Turrell." - Mark Fedeli

Don‘t fall for this trap The whole hotel is an overpriced joke. Pro‘s: free shuttle to around the museum Beach view from the rooms Art installations on the hotel proberty Cons: - Food in Japanese restaurant is a health risk. Fish is served at a terrible quality (sashimi etc.) and most likely thawed in the afternoon as everything on the plate tasted the same. Out of 8 courses, 2 were good. - very small portions in western restaurant, if you’re still hungry which you most likely will be you can order an extra meal at an outrageous price. - Rooms and infrastructure in general in poor state (bad smell, signs of usage overall). Ants in the bedroom

Naoshima Park in Japan is a stunning blend of nature and contemporary art. Known for its outdoor sculptures and the Benesse House Museum, the park offers a serene escape with beautiful coastal views. The seamless integration of art and environment creates a unique, inspiring experience. Ideal for art lovers and those seeking tranquility, Naoshima Park is a must-visit destination.

Benesse hotel has three different types of accommodations. The park is the most affordable option, and we chose it based on our budget. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could see the sea from the window in the room. The view from the window is incredibly beautiful, overlooking a serene park and calm sea. Additionally, the tea room that is one of the artworks is also seen by the window. There’s a museum on the underground floor and the hotel offers museum tours for the hotel guests. It has a nice restaurant and a bar. The bar is like a small museum. The tables made of large tree trunks are amazing. The hotel has complimentary shuttles to other museums and places. Even after dinner, they drive guests to the museum. The driver staff are friendly and nice.

A great place to spend a couple of days exploring the island and the spectacular art that is distributed throughout the park and in the dedicated museums.

Tao Ando designed minimalist oddball and brutalist concrete hotel. Memorable, nice views, good service. Suggest you pack a dinner and take it with you because you are trapped there and it's expensive to eat, with limited choice.

We stayed here for a night when touring Japan as a quiet break between the cities of Hiroshima and Osaka. We had a Park suite (probably because there was 3 of us) and it was the nicest room we stayed in on our whole trip around Japan. The decor was lovely and modern, beds were very comfy and view was incredible. Breakfast was fantastic - I had french toast but there was the whole offering of Japanese and western buffet options. Staff were super friendly and helpful (even for Japan where everyone is very helpful anyway!). Touring the museum after hours (a guest privilege) was a lovely bonus. Highly recommend

What a lovely place this is.Incredidible helpfull staff good service with busses to alle the museums at the hotel ground, harbour en Homera city projects. The rooms with seaside view are very affordable too. The art around you as guest is an wonderful addition. But i wonder why you cannot rent bikes at the hotel? For guests everything would be more easy!. All those busses driving around is that sustainable? The restaurants they offer are of good quality but i think there is simple room for improvement. The French cuisine restaurant is to safe, and Japanse influences should be added. For me the abbolonedish was an example to prove that. The winelist is too short, the pairing to simple [it lacks every effort by the present sommelier to make it a memorable evening] because you have to make your own choices. The present dessert is also fantastisc but no effort is made to give me an extra glass of wine etc. The beer list has a local beer, but as a beersommelier i’m sure the wine sommelier has no knowledge about beerstyles and pairing. The presented beer was not in style, and had no addition to the menu whatsoever. In the Japanese restaurant the drinkspairing is not there at all. What a missed oppertunity to make it an selling point of the venue. The cuisine was in my opinion excellent. But chefs, and sommeliers should be more present in modern times at the tabe. Signed menu’s when you leave make a great and simple contribution to the experience of an evening. In both restaurants the tempo of serving was in my opinion too fast. But the stars of the hotel are in the bar/lounge. The cocktailmenu is exceptional, creative, and even affordable. Try the Negroni, the espresso Martini or ask for the Bennese Sazarac! The hosts are open for a true conversation, and for a professional like me very good companions.

The best place to explore all the art on Naoshima island with priory access to the Benesse museum and a free island shuttle facility. The rooms are a little bit outdated, but what a privilege to sleep in a building designed by Tada Ando. Walking distance to the Benesse museum, the Lee Ufan museum and the Chichu and on the way there do not miss the Walter de Maria sculptures and the Valley Gallery with Kusama’s work. And the bug landmark Kusama pumpkin is just in front of the hotel. You need to book the hotel well in advance, because in high demand, and also reserve a table (only for guests) in either the Park hotel or in the Benesse museum restaurant.
