Japanese Hotels That Defy Their Reputation

"This is truly a special one, a hotel worth a pilgrimage for anyone at all with an interest in art and architecture. Located on a tiny, isolated island in the Inland Sea, Benesse House is essentially a collaboration between the billionaire art collector Soichiro Fukutake and the Pritzker prize–winning architect Tadao Ando, with major works and site-specific installations by everyone from Jackson Pollock to James Turrell." - Mark Fedeli

Style. Tadao Ando designed hotel, with several options in various buildings to choose from Setting. 3000 islands of the Seto Inland Sea, 400 km long body of water separating Honshu from Kyushu and Shikoku Explore. Naoshima Art Island Rooms. Room 1204 ( Benesse House Park, the most affordable of the various options ) was nothing to write home about, even though the view of the park and sea was stunning. Room is dated in general, and the bathtub was not inviting @ the hotel. Favorite experiences were being able to wander around the hotel grounds pre breakfast and post dinner, to look at all the amazing art and just enjoy the peace, and gorgeous coastline. The shuttle bus that runs most of the day was really handy as well Food & drinks. Was surprised at the cheap quality of the 8 course kaiseki dinner at Issen. I don’t remember the last time I was served cheap iceberg lettuce in Japan, the wasabi quaity was not good and the peach dessert tasted like it came out of a can! I was here at 6 pm and by 7:14 pm they already brought the check to me even though I did not ask for it Prices. 90640 yen /USD 614 half board Rating: Overall 4/5 Location 5/5 Room 4/5 (4 for the view) Food 3/5

It’s a unique accommodation in Naoshima, but it’s extremely expensive—$600 per night at minimum—for a fairly simple room. While it does include some special perks like transportation and museum visits, that’s about it. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the cost. I suggest staying at Uno Port instead, which is much more enjoyable and flexible, both during the day and at night. Plus, it’s only a 20-minute ferry ride from Uno Port to Naoshima. Of course, it all comes down to personal preference.

Absolutely loved our stay here. Felt like a real privilege - stunning location, beautiful art, amazing service and delicious food in the Terrace Restaurant. Hopefully next time we can get 2 nights as want to try both restaurants! Wonderful seeing the art at night.

Student dormitory rooms, poorly maintained and not up to the Tadao Ando name. In the basement is a bizarrely places Sugimoto exhibition which does not really do justice to the highest quality of this top top Japanese artist. There are much better accommodation alternatives in Naoshima. The reservation system is also for foreigners an unpractical nightmare.

I had a great time here. I booked last March 27. I actually booked the wrong dates last February, but they helped me sort it out so i could still stay when i travelled to Naoshima. It's a spectacular location. There is art all over the place. The hotel and the Museum inside is designed by Tadao Ando. It is located near the Benesse House Museum, Beach Wing and the Oval. The hotel also houses the Hiroshi Sugimoto Time Corridors. You can view it at night while you're checked in. There is a Japanese and French Restaurant located near the premises, but you have to book in advance.

The most wonderful thing about staying here is the feeling that dreams really do come true. This hotel is the embodiment of art.

Benesse hotel has three different types of accommodations. The park is the most affordable option, and we chose it based on our budget. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that I could see the sea from the window in the room. The view from the window is incredibly beautiful, overlooking a serene park and calm sea. Additionally, the tea room that is one of the artworks is also seen by the window. There’s a museum on the underground floor and the hotel offers museum tours for the hotel guests. It has a nice restaurant and a bar. The bar is like a small museum. The tables made of large tree trunks are amazing. The hotel has complimentary shuttles to other museums and places. Even after dinner, they drive guests to the museum. The driver staff are friendly and nice.

We stayed here for a night when touring Japan as a quiet break between the cities of Hiroshima and Osaka. We had a Park suite (probably because there was 3 of us) and it was the nicest room we stayed in on our whole trip around Japan. The decor was lovely and modern, beds were very comfy and view was incredible. Breakfast was fantastic - I had french toast but there was the whole offering of Japanese and western buffet options. Staff were super friendly and helpful (even for Japan where everyone is very helpful anyway!). Touring the museum after hours (a guest privilege) was a lovely bonus. Highly recommend
