Bennett’s is an old-school steakhouse and bar with deep roots in the city’s railroad history, noted by the Pioneer Press and local food guides for its hearty, classic burgers. The menu features thick, juicy patties and a range of comfort food sides, all served in a setting that pays homage to Saint Paul’s past. It’s a go-to for those looking for a substantial burger and a bit of local nostalgia.

For a little inconspicuous place, it really surprised us all around. Bartender was very welcoming and attentive, drinks were great, and the food was delicious. We stopped for a late lunch, had wings (standard) and shared the little Charlies and fries with blue cheese and bacon (exceptional). Rivals the St. Paul Hotel’s little Charlies and might be better. We forgot to take pictures of our food, sorry.

Google
Best bruschetta I’ve ever had! Corey our server was Amazing and so personable. Thank You, Corey! Service was outstanding , great atmosphere and the food was incredible. I got the sirloin and it was cooked to perfection. Make sure to save room for their delicious desserts. This was my first time here but definitely not the last. I could eat the bruschetta everyday ☺️ Seriously though, order the bruschetta!

Google
Highly disappointed in this restaurant. My friends and I arrived at 545 with a reservation. There was not alot of people there. Our server took our drink order, brought our sodas and waters. It took at least 20 minutes for her to come back and take our order. Another 30 minutes go by and our appetizer came out. The mushroomswere cold and raw. Another 10 minutes goes by until we get our soups and salads. The French onion had no cheese on the top and was cold (see picture) the salad was a few shreds of Lettuce. Another 20 minutes goes by and our dinners come out. My friends steak was raw and cold, our augratins were raw and cold, the green beans were cold and even the baked potatoe was cold. Did I mentions we all had empty glass for who knows how long and we had to ask for refills. Worst service, worst food. Not what I was expecting. The only pleasant part of the experience was the apps were taken off, the steak was taken off and one meal was 50% off. We didn't get out of there until almost 8pm. We will never go back.

Google
It is a very crowded, small restaurant, but you can make reservations to ensure a table. The staff's attention is excellent despite being full. The food is delicious; the appetizers are a delight, and the main dishes are exquisite. 100% recommended. It is not a fancy place, but it is one of the places you have to go to eat.

Google
This was our 1st time back here in years. It did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and they had bingo there this night and it was packed. They still offer the widest and best martini selections in the twin cities ...if you have never been here checknit out for sure.

Google
Went in for the $15.99 Wednesday steak special and it was awesome. Usually when you see a combo of beer, 10 ounce steak, fries, veggies and soup for $15.99, that’s too good to be true. I’ve had that experience at other places, but here it was the real deal. Definitely coming back to get this again

Google
Great food with fast friendly service. Stopped for late lunch and had a blue cheese burger. It was sooooooo good . A definite must stop. All the menu items look spectacular, I can't wait to get back to them. Thanks, Bennetts Chop and Railhouse

Google
This place exceeded all our expectations!! My mom has a coupon and she called the day before and the SUPER NICE gentleman was so nice about us using it. We had a party of 6 and when we arrived he had the table set up perfectly on the patio. The same guy who served us was so accommodating and it really made us enjoy our burger even more. I got the sticky burger which has peanut butter!!!! We cannot wait to come back again!!

Yelp
Amazing service and cravable chopped salad and little Charlie filet medallions Every time we go we are always impressed with the quality

Yelp
For an upscale kind of place, I was surprised by the plastic glasses. I enjoyed the Creole Meatloaf, I guess I was expecting something more, but I suppose in the end it's meatloaf, and would meatloaf ever blow my mind?

Yelp
The Tuesday walleye special was delicious and the portion was generous! Good service and drinks and amazing desserts too!

Yelp
We visited for Valentines Day. What a neighborhood gem! It was hopping - and kind of loud.

Yelp
Visited for mother's day. Made a reservation, and after a bit of a wait were seated. Server was very very friendly but clearly had a large number of tables, as would be gone for long stretches of time. Food was solid, but I think again due to being overly busy some of us had warm food, while others had hot food. Their fries were excellent, though again I wish they would have been warmer. Decent beer list. Good apps, the whole family loved the bruschetta. I had "two Earnie's" or some such - quite good. Kiddo with us had a juicy lucy which he rated as good and ate it completely. The space is not fancy, but its comfortable. I give some grace as there were several large groups in the space - I'd go back to give it another try for sure.

Yelp
Stopped in on Monday for 1/2 priced apps. Had the chophouse tender tips. They were pretty good. Remember no specials on event nights.

Yelp
This St Paul icon never disappoints! Went for dinner with three friends and every meal was awesome. We started with their soup to the day...beef stew. It was a creamy version of stew and the deep beef flavor was spot on. For dinner I had the pork chops with au gratin potatoes and green beans. The only minor this g about the beans is -there were very few on each plate! One plate literally had 4. I will add we could have asked the staff for more, but we did not. No bib deal and it did not take away from the delicious meal! We each had the drink of the day which was a yummy lemon spritz for only $5! Def recommend and thanks to them for being huge supporters of the St Paul Winter Carnival!

Yelp
My dad was in the mood for steak, so we tried Bennett's. When we pulled up to the building I was not very confident because the outside appearance is not very nice for a steak house, looked more like a dive bar. We got inside and things improved greatly. It is still a bar, but in the dining area the tables all had nice cloths and it looked much nicer. We ordered drinks and they were very good. We each had the sirloin steak with au gratin potatoes, very tasty and done rare just as we ordered. For me the best part was the Brussels sprouts that came with the meal. They were sliced thin and sautéed and were probably the best Brussels sprouts I have ever had. It was more affordable than other steak houses as well, which is very nice!

Yelp
Bartenders are super friendly. The crab cakes were amazing. Drinks tasty. I'll be back

Yelp
Great martinis. Easy diner food. The outside doesn't look like much. I think the food was just okay. I might be back for a burger for sure. Definitely a great place for a quick bite and the martinis are HUGEEEE I HAD A GREAT WAITRESS. Easy food. Great prices. Easy service. Happy discovery

Yelp
We were craving some food and well white castle was not doing the trick so we made a trip to bennets. We entered the old looking divy establishment and were greeted promptly by the hostest. As we were quickly ushered to our booth we glanced at the walls with lots of photos and autigraphed memorabilia and then were seated. We ordered the spinach artichoke dip that i remember eating last year and it was not the same. There was a lack of salt and peper but the garlic bread it came with was very good. I washed it down with a fat tire then our fillet mignon arrived. We selected fries with it and payed the extra to upgrade these suckers. We also got their soup of the day and that was a wild rice soup. After 15 minutes of anticipation the wild rice soup arrived. Now don't he fooled by the size the little cup packs a punch and 20 minutes after eating it sinks down to your stomach like a snitch wearing cement shoes in the river. The steak came out next... it came with some corn and omg the corn had nothing on it but it was divine. The taste of butter coated my mouth followed by the sweetness. Then I took a bite of the steak. Now its not the best steak I had but mine was cooked good enough. The layers of flesh melted in my mouth like a canibal eating a corpse and the fries well I don't know even though loaded they were nothing special. Emma our server did a fantastic job making sure we had what we needed and unlike most places we did not have to wait ages to get our bill. Emma also made sure we didn't die of dehydration and kept us hydrated. She was very bubbly and social and strong indication that she has been doing this for a whole and based on her promptness and social skills I can tell she was a pro. Most of the food ordered was cooked to our liking and some items needed more salt and pepper but that's why they put it on the table. Over all our experiance was good at Bennet... Ohh a buss with snow flakes arrived and some drunk guy with a cape with large metal buttons that were bigger than a Texans belt buckle came in screaming that he was in the house followed by shots and stuff.. did I mention free entertainment and people watching!!

Yelp
Was invited to have dinner at Bennett's in St Paul on a Sunday evening by my lovely in-laws. I've been to this location but it was probably 2 years ago and for lunch. They have an extensive menu of fancy entrees, burgers, apps, etc. I opted for the bison burger sans the horseradish aioli and a bun paired with fries alongside a Tito's and soda and lime. I ordered my bison medium rare..but it was more medium. I do wish they had some gfree buns. Everyone else enjoyed the mini Charlie's, the salmon, and the crab cake burger. Service was good. The only note is that the bathroom is a one stall. Looking forward to trying other items on their menu.

Yelp
Bennett's.... Where have you been all my life? I live on the west side of Minneapolis but have been known to travel anywhere for dinner at a supper club. My husband enjoyed the sirloin with baked potato and chilled chopped dinner salad that was really very fresh and tasty. I enjoyed a nice Martini- and the two steak medallions with horseradish. Just perfect for me and came recommended from one of the guest we were dining with who knew the menu quite well. You guys rock it and I will be back!

Shang M.

Yelp
server charged me $40 extra for being Chinese, I will be in contact with my lawyers. seems to run in the business as I've heard many other stories. They brought me dumplings even though I had ordered nothing at that time. my server, Max who I assume is the owners son would not stop making jokes about me ordering a fried dog. I will not be revisiting this establishment any time soon.

Yelp
Went last Friday for dinner before the Queen concert at the Xcel energy center with plans to take their free shuttle bus service to the show. Got there a little before our 630 reservation but told we weren't able to be accommodated until our time. Ok, no worries. Overheard the host telling another group they were way overbooked. Uh oh. Our server was very helpful, and greatly attentive. The food was awesome. My husband had the walleye with au gratin potatoes and I had the steak sliders with fries. Both great. My sliders were a bit messy but I didn't care, they tasted phenomenal. Now here's where they lose some points. When I called about the shuttle service earlier in the day, I was told it started at 630 and just made loops back and forth from the X from that point on. Awesome, we won't be the first ride then so crowd might thin out some... WRONG! Bus still wasn't there by 7. Our server was apologizing but assured us that it would get there soon cause the waiting crowd was getting restless. Now it's 720, and we have finished our meal, and still no bus. Also, there's been zero crowd control. People are vacating their tables in anticipation of getting on the bus but not one announcement is made on where to line up so people do so in the middle of the restaurant and keep banging into the back of my husband's chair. The server continues to apologize but it's still frustrating, imagine it to be like a little kid kicking the back of your airplane seat. It completely ruined the vibe and the good meal. Finally, as we're walking back to our car, the bus rolls up at nearly 730. We decided to just drive and bite the bullet to park. Wasn't interested in the same fiasco trying to get back after the show. TL;DR: good food, good service but skip it if there is something people are being shuttled to an event from there.

Yelp
Super club style. One of my go toos when I want a great chop salad and a couple pork chops. Strong good drinks
google avatar

Yelp
I'll just give them another five star review. I love this place, my fave neighborhood spot. I almost want to keep it a secret so I can get a bar spot! Amazing drink list, the most extensive I've seen, amazing prices and top shelf quality. The food is decent, my fave is the Big Ben but I like the crab cakes and walleye sliders. Fries are Everyone knows everyone and they all talk to you like you're an old friend. Love this place and the people who work here

Leslie B.

Yelp
Great food. We like to go because the food is so diverse and good. But don't go if the are having a sports game because it is always full. They bus people to the games.
google avatar

Sue N Louie D.

Yelp
Food was REALLY good, unfortunately it was not hot when it got to our table. Totally willing to give them another try.
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
I don't think Bennett's is clear on what it is. Is it a martini bar? Is it a dive bar? Is it a steakhouse? The white table cloths with the smoker vibes were very confusing. The food was okay- I thought it was fairly priced and the drinks were strong. Our server was gracious with our table of 10, but I don't feel the need to go back anytime soon.

Yelp
NEVER JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER ! Accidentally discovered this place last year and could not wait to come back again ! Work in the area during state fair and it was top of my list. JUST PLAIN FANTASTIC ! The service , the menu options limited during lunch but the wow factor on dinner menu and the atmosphere will take you back to the good old days. DEFINITELY A MUST

Yelp
I made reservations for a birthday dinner for my Husband. The parking is horrible. We had to park 2 blocks away. Upon arrival I mentioned our reservation my name was not even asked. It was so busy and chaotic. We were placed with another couple. They were offered more service than us. The drinks took forever to come to the table. Upon placing our order we both ordered salads. Again waiting a very long time. Finally our meals came. He ordered the Tomahawk steak. It was a severe disappointment. For the $53.99 price it was a very subpar steak. They shave the bone because it won't fit on the small grill. I had the chicken pot pie at $23.99. It was watery, doughy and was very subpar. The waitress did comp our meals but not the drinks which was appreciated along with a gift card but we will not be returning. Overly expensive "steak" house.

Yelp
I'm writing this review after reading so many already posted. We used to dine at O'Gara's and ride the bus to the Wild games. We always enjoyed their food and the camadarie on the bus. Also, I used to spend weekday afternoons, from work, there, from time to time. BUT, alas, that is no more! We tried Bennett' s Chop & Railhouse for an alternative and fell in love with the place. It is much less impersonal! (More like Cheers, but not the same... no ads or somber postmen...). The food and atmosphere kept drawing us back.... A much more fun atmosphere than the other place, and the food is better. One feels and gets enveloped in the excitement of the game, which keeps us motivated to cheer on the home team! AND, after a win, the excitement on the bus is fun -- and this is from a boring, retired, 70-year old, ex-accountant. Our favorite meals have been, the pot-pies, Chicken Kiev, the burgers (Burghars?), but all is good. Nobody makes a better chopped salad like our chefs (we no longer order the soup). But, I think our all-time favorite is the meat-loaf! I'm surprised I didn't find a picture of it. Next-time we'll take a picture to add to the gallery, which, hopefully will be on New Years Eve. CHEERS! To a Joyous and lovely New Year 2024! GO WILD!

Yelp
We had a very disappointing experience at Bennett's lately, which was a surprise as they are typically a great spot for dinner! We made reservations for 4 on a Saturday night for a family celebration. It was very busy and we were seated at a table near three large, full booths, with other tables nearby, and a fair number of loud, obviously intoxicated people were seated all around us. My boyfriend and I could hardly hear one another at the table, and asked the host if we could be moved to someplace quieter as we had an elderly person joining us later. She disappeared for a while before telling us that they cannot move us and that next time we need to call to make reservations for a quiet table rather than making them online. Our server was then very brusque when she got to our table, and acted annoyed that our 80 year old dad couldn't speak more loudly when ordering. Our drinks, salad, and entrees took forever to get to the table, and all came out at different times. At one point, an entree was sent out to us that we didn't order and we let the food runner know and sent it back. A good five minutes later, when my boyfriend still had no food, the server asked if everything was ok and we mentioned his prime rib hadn't come yet. She immediately told us that's not what he ordered and when we insisted it was she walked away. She finally came back and apologized for that, but by the time his food was ready the rest of the table had finished eating and so he got it to go. No discounts for the wait, or messing up his order, or being incredibly rude. We won't be going back. Food is good, but not good enough to make up for inconsiderate service.

Jon V.

Yelp
Very nice atmosphere. However, I ordered a tomahawk ribeye, and got a bone in ribeye, that was only half an inch thick. Flavor was OK, but certainly not worth the $53 on the menu. Was a bummer because everything else is pretty nice.

Yelp
I LOVE Bennet's! This is a great spot pre-Wild game, or for a date night or Girl's Night Out. They have a mind-blowing martini menu. So fun to explore! My favorite is the black and blue, but you can pick any drink and you'll love it. The food here is really good. I really like the stuffed mushrooms, crab cakes, and Cajun chicken fettuccine. The service is always quick and friendly, even when they're busy. Don't forget to check out the signatures on the wall! You might find some familiar names... including mine.

Yelp
Had easily one of the best delivery experiences yesterday with Bennett's. My company gave us Uber Eats gift cards for the holidays so I decided to try Bennett's for lunch. I tried the Asian chicken salad and a Reuben. Both were outstanding! Even for delivery! The Asian chicken salad was pretty straightforward but it hit the spot. Lettuce was crisp and fresh, chicken was juicy and crunchy, and the dressing was great and tied it all together. The Reuben had great meat that wasn't too fatty with a good ratio of sauerkraut and sauce. The portions were huge as well! I will definitely be ordering again and if the food is this good delivered, it must be even better when dining in! Will definitely pay them a visit when restrictions are lifted.

Yelp
Have you had a Big Mac? Yes? Ok, have you had a Big Ben?? No. What's wrong with you!?--ugh sorry, I gotta work on that projecting Anywho, the Big Ben at Bennett's is the best sit-down-restaurant version of this classic that I've had anywhere. I'm always shocked I never see it on anyone's twin cities top 10 list--cause it's like my number 4! They're a West 7th neighborhood staple and serving up MN Supper Club style fair as well as clutch burgers, wings, killer sandwiches--you name it. Get there. Fast. And be sure to try the scrumptious bruschetta and Reuben egg rolls to start. I promise you won't regret it!
google avatar

Joe C.

Yelp
Outdated building, more of a bar than a restraint, not a good place for a New Year's Eve dinner, or really any special occasion. Our stuffed mushroom app was a joke. A bowl of greasy melted cheddar cheese with three small mushroom caps, what??? Seafood risotto wasn't much better. With two glasses of wine, an app and two entrees the bill was over $110 before tip.
google avatar

Yelp
Surprisingly solid dinner on a Friday night lets go out with no planning. A little bit divvy but all around solid foid. Spinach artichoke dip was a little "wet' for me but was delicious. Out burgers and steaks were great. Kid who dislikes meat loved his splurge on a burger. Steak was perfectly cooked. Au Gratins hot and tasty. Chicken Pot Pie was great same price as Lex's and enough leftover for a nice lunch. Realky great overall Definitely going to go back. Very Minnesotan in the middle of St. Paul on 7th.

Yelp
If the rating was for the wait staff, it would be 4 1/2 stars. Our waitress was wonderful - very friendly and hard working. As for the setting, it's a sports bar not a chop house. And boy did we make a mistake for not checking the hockey schedule. Thankfully, we had reservation and were able to be seated immediately. But the atmosphere was loud and very unpleasant for a date night. On top of that the tables were so close together there was no privacy whatsoever. Then, the food. I was told the steak was excellent. I am very hesitant to spend money on steaks and am sad that I did here - over $50 for a ribeye that was nothing special. In fact, the gas flavor on the steak covered any goodness that could have been present, but am pretty sure there's no aging or flavoring that goes into the meat. Ordered wild rice to go with it and it was merely a few grains of wild rice mixed in with flavored rice. My bride had the Seafood Risotto with Crab Cake and it was sub par. The crab cake was tiny and the risotto was a small portion and not too much flavor. The app and burger menu looked good. Maybe will give it another try some time.

Yelp
Food is good, I like to go here for a good steak when I'm in the mood. Atmospheres OK, it's pretty open from the bar all the way into the restaurant, casual but you can dress up if you want. When you walk in it's the bar's on the left, and then to the right the area is open seating. FYI if I recall, the bathroom is really tiny.
google avatar

Yelp
My personal rule is "Always order the walleye." So I did. And it was great. Maybe the best ever. The Tuesday Special was a walleye dinner, without the soup/salad. It had great flavor, good firm texture, and a kickass crust. The au gratin potatoes were an after thought, and I wish I'd stuck with the mashed, but that's ok, my meal was still a 10. The other diners had: cajun meatloaf (solid B+) and a steak. The surprise of the meal was the dumpling soup. My husband started with a cup, and then followed it up with a bowl. It was reminiscent of a tasty matzo ball soup. Final star of the meal was the house-made, 3-layer slice of carrot cake. Yum. Order it, you won't regret it...even if you are as full as I was.

Franceen R.

Yelp
Just came home from an early dinner at Bennett's. It's prime rib night, my husbands favorite. Service is always amazing, got to see Rocky, who is our favorite bartender and met Tiffany, who was our server. She made us feel like part of the Bennett's family. Prime rib was perfect and my favorite is the salmon, both cooked to perfection. If you go there for prime rib on Saturday night, aways ask for a side of béarnaise sauce, homemade and amazing. Came home with two pieces of grandma's carrot cake. Can't wait to dive into that later.

Partick C.

Yelp
Great food, appetizers, burgers and steaks. Lots of cocktails to choose from. Definitely make reservations unless you want to take your chances at the bar.
google avatar

Madeline A.

Yelp
Excellent service, fabulous dinner. We were also pleased to learn about the complimentary shuttle to the excel. Try the seafood risotto and the sirloin dinner with augratin potatoes, you won't be disappointed! We also enjoyed the simple yet delicious Bennett's chopped salad.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar, felt like something from Cheers. We had a great time. The little Charlies we're the best!

Chris W.

Yelp
The service was amazing however the location appeared to be a sports bar calling itself a chop house. Our group was fairly satisfied with their dinner however the New York strip had a significant line of Gristle running down the center of the cut making it almost impossible to eat. Not what you would expect from a chop house.
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
Not everything the reviews made it out to be. Good service and food was nothing special. Good eats but weird atmosphere. Less of a steakhouse and more of a bar with some nice tables to eat. Check them out and see what you think
google avatar

Kim C.

Yelp
Oh WOW the burger here was soooo yummy. The interior is kinda ho-hum and can get pretty noisy and cramped but the food and service makes up for it. We ordered some onion rings before dinner and they were easily some of the best rings I ever had. Crunchy on the outside and soft well cooked onion on the inside. The skin on fries were super tasty and the burger was cooked perfectly. Not much else I can say except it's worth a stop in for a casual burger. This isn't what I would consider a fancy supper club, so if you are looking for a really nice date night place, skip this and go to Holman's Table.

Yelp
Cocktails, Scallops and Steaks. Beginning to see a pattern here with my restaurant reviews of 2018! Yes, it's true. This was the year I ate a lot of Scallops and Steaks and I will tell my children this story too once they are old enough to understand! It was the September weekend it suddenly got so cold in the Twin Cities that everyone freaked out and had to turn on their heat. For me, I just needed a square meal and a drink. My friend and I came here on the weekend of the Justin Timberlake concert at The Xcel Energy Center and the restaurant was packed! I had made a reservation on the same day. We settled down into a comfortable booth and started to get our cocktails on. We ordered the Scallops appetizer and then our steaks. I had the New York Strip and she had the Sirloin, both with fries. We looked at the dessert menu and saw some delicious options so we settled on the Berry Pastry with Ice-Cream. It was OK, nothing memorable. The scallops were memorable and so were the cocktails. I had the Manhattan, straight up, and she had a few Old-Fashioneds. But for the love of all things unholy, the bathrooms! I could barely fit inside. It is a one-stall each kind of bathroom, one for ladies, one for gents. (No gender-neutrals) It kind of added to the quaint atmosphere so I wasn't bothered by it too much! Parking is not too bad compared to other places on the West 7th corridor, since this is located on a side street I was able to get side street parking on Victoria. I do enjoy how cute and cozy the interior of the restaurant is. A bit of an historic feel, not too fancy, just large portions of good food. Winning.

Yelp
My husband and I stopped in your new restaurant... Love the ambience, unfortunately, we are Bar patrons, and were unable to sit at the bar because of lack of leg and foot room. REALLY hope vou can address this as we've enjoyed your seventh Avenue location menu and cocktails many times, and were excited when we heard of this venue! Thank you for your attention to this matter!!

Yelp
OK service at best... at best Bacon wrapped shrimp came out so over cooked it looked like charcoal. Ceased salad was at best marginal. Noise special bone in rib-eye ... either it needed to be more tender or it needed to come with a MUCH sharper knife ...

Bennett's is always kinda hit and miss. Requested a specific table for a special occasion well in advance. Go in and there are only 3 occupied tables in the whole place. Guess which was one? The special Manhattan is terrific. No happy hour special prices allowed when seated in the restaurant, which is basically an extension of the bar. Excellent homemade blue cheese salad dressing. New York asked for rare was picture perfect. Scallop entree- average risotto with 3- yes, 3 scallops for $33 dollars?? Ouch. I think I'm going to stick with their burgers which I hear are good.

Yelp
Basically, if you have any sort of food, allergies, do not eat here they basically told me to get lost, but they couldn't help us. Very unhelpful for people that have food allergies, which in today's age is very very common. also the salad looks like three days old and premixed with French. Green beans were crunchy. The steak was good that's it. Very poor service

Yelp
Love finding a spot at the rail! We typically visit in the evenings and prefer to sit at the bar. The food is always incredible and the martinis are delicious.

Yelp
I had an outstanding meal and very friendly service. My glass of pop was constantly full and our food server was awesome. We had three appetizers and our food server was awesome in making sure our table was cleared. Our food was very accommodating and helpful. The appetizers were great my Ruben burger was perfect. I am telling everyone about my wonderful experience and the great food. I am definitely coming back
