10 Real-Deal Bagel Shops in Portland | Eater Portland

"In a tiny brick space on Northwest 21st Avenue, the Bentley’s team makes smallish, puck-sized New York bagels: heavy on the schmear, rippled with boil marks, with a light but substantial chew. The crust on the bagel is crunchy without hitting baguette territory, while the interior maintains its airiness. Ever purists, Bentley’s offers just six flavors: plain, poppy, sesame, salt, cheese, cinnamon raisin, and everything. The shop is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays." - Daniel Barnett

4. Really good bagels. Not a lot of seating. Kind service. Not great if you have allergies. I have a soy allergy and they use vegetable oil (primarily soybean) on their flattop - unable to make eggs and bacon on a separate pan etc. had my bagel with avocado and tomato- Still really good- lots of salty goodness on the everything bagel. Kid friendly and VERY dog friendly- they even have little treats for dogs.

Google
Yummy yum yum! Love this local spot! Great bagels choices and yummy breakfast sammiches! I’ve had the bacon egg and cheese on an everything bagel and the “everything” had all the flavors! Their cream cheese choices are ALL flavorful! I recently tried the sun dried tomato and FELL IN LOVE!!! Big chunks of tomatoes and the flavor is ROBUST! I pick up bagels here regularly for my work team and it’s always a hit. They even sell dog treats which my pups absolutely love! The atmosphere is inviting and you’re always greeted with a friendly smile. I come here a couple times a week. Never disappoints!

Google
Best bagel I’ve had in Portland. Nice folks. Dog friendly. Constructive feedback: make the check marks on you tickets more clear so there’s no mistakes. Noon is also a very weird time to close for any food establishment. At least go till 1pm Edit: if y’all could do a some precooked/chilled bacon so it doesn’t turn into a sloppy mess it would be greatly appreciated. Sincerely, person with huge beard that will end up wearing more of this than I get in my mouth.

Google
My favorite bagel spot in Portland, everything is delicious and the service is always super friendly. The only downside is there's no prepayment option - you can only call in to order, but then you still have to wait in the line to pay, even if your food's already ready. Worth the wait though, and the bagel sandwiches are my favorite of anywhere in the neighborhood and all of PDX!

Google
$4.5 for a bagel with cream cheese. Delicious. Relative to other bagel shops in town, theirs are on the smaller side. The bread a little more doughy & chewy. Prob my 2nd favorite in Portland. They have sun dried tomato schmear, the only shop in Portland with it that I know of.

Google
A pretty good bagel, I got the sausage, egg, and cheese on an everything. The service was great and the employees are all really nice. The seating is limited so make sure to be ready to walk if need be.

Google
My boyfriend and I both got bagel sandwiches on our very first visit here. I added avocado to mine (which costs $1.50) and got such a tiny amount of avocado (see photo below) that I had to go up and ask them if they could add more. They added more and were really nice about it so I’m just hoping it was a one time oversight. The bagels were nice and chewy, but not as big as NY bagels. I’ll definitely come back in a few weeks and try another bagel, maybe with cream cheese this time.

Google
Drove 2 hours to have this for my birthday! These bagel sandwiches are unmissable! My mouth is actually watering just thinking of these! Super quick service and somehow always seating available!

Yelp
Loved this bagel! The place was so cute, walk-in right from the street, i found parking right in front and the doors were open, making it so welcoming. The staff was super friendly and helped me customize my bagel option, which was everything toasted with cream cheese, lox, and onion. The price was reasonable at 10$ and it came out super fast. I had stepped outside and the staff came out with my bag to hand it to me personally It was delicious, they cut it to make it easy to eat and all the ingredients are fresh and yummy. Absolutely loved this bagel and lox! Will be back soon.

Yelp
I want to start off by saying I think I just caught Bentley's on a bad day. But I must share my experience, nonetheless. I was excited to finally try Bentley's after hearing numerous recommendations from coworkers and friends. I arrived on a Friday morning, a few minutes prior to opening -- and they were open early! I walked in and was immediately turned off by the younger gal working the cash register. As a first timer, I had a few questions, and every answer I was given was served with a heaping side of attitude. Regardless, I was hopeful the bagels would overshadow this poor customer service. I ordered the most basic bagel order possible: scrambled egg and cheese bagel on sesame and a toasted sesame bagel with cream cheese. The same gal made my bagels and it looked like she just mashed the ingredients together and threw them in the bag. Usually, when I get an egg and cheese bagel, the egg is scrambled but formed into a patty of sorts -- maybe Bentley's does it differently because the eggs were so scrambled I couldn't eat it without everything falling out (see my photo). My friend's cream cheese bagel was also sloppily made, the wrapper had more cream cheese on it than the bagel itself. All in all, it was a big disappointment, but hopefully just an off day considering all of the other positive Yelp reviews.

Yelp
My second bagel experience in Portland and I will say while the bagel itself was good and fine, man is it small. Bagels to me are like ice cream, there's clearly levels with a ceiling that there are several high quality places are hitting. Like you can only improve on a bagel so much, then it's creativity and execution that starts to separate the high tier places. Bentley's bagels is definitely in that higher tier in terms of quality, taste, chew, schmear, etc. But at $10 for two bagels, it's just gotta be bigger than my fist. I have nothing else to add other than I had reservations about the jalapeno cheddar cream cheese, but it's good. Try it. It's cream cheese with some shredded cheddar vs. a whipped cheddar cream cheese if that makes sense.

Yelp
5/5 this place slaps. been living in Portland for about a year now and this place definitely ranks top 3 repeatable breakfast spots I got an everything bagel sandwich with - Bacon - Avacado - Over easy egg - Tomato - Onions
google avatar

Arianna C.

Yelp
Exactly what I was craving for this morning. Brantley's Bagels does not disappoint even on a rainy day. The bagel is so soft and chewy and I love how generous they are with the Lox. I'll definitely go back again.
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Got a cheese bagel with chive cream cheese, everything bagel with cream cheese, and a breakfast sando. It was all super yummy. A light crisp on the outside and soft in the inside. Bagels are boiled so it does have a different texture but it's still very tasty! The staff was super friendly and welcoming. Had a mix up on my order but they were very kind to fix my mistake. I really appreciated it instead of staff getting mad because it was quite busy. Make sure to go before rush so you don't have to wait in line!

Yelp
Pretty good place on NW21st. Came over on a weekend morning. The place was pretty bustling. They have the usual options - shmears, lox, egg sandwiches with lots of options to customize. Food took a while - to the point that I thought they lost our order but it did arrive. And it tasted great. Bagels are nice and tender. A little small for the price but still good
google avatar

Yelp
Bentley's bagels is still practicing Covid restrictions by allowing only one customer in the restaurant at a time and having you wait outside for your order to be completed. I ordered a salt bagel with roast jalapeño cream cheese. The bagel was good but not spectacular like I expected. It had the consistency of thick sliced bread and the flavor followed that thought. The roasted jalapeño cream cheese was a show stopper. It popped with fresh jalapeño flavor and made me want more. The cream cheese turned an a average bagel experience into something amazing....Definitely the best that I have had.

Yelp
Bagels are pretty good, but the place is run more like a hobby project than a business. Very uneven service. Wait times sometimes inexplicably long. I'd say it is 50/50 as to whether you will have a good or a bad experience, and that gets old pretty fast. They often run out of bagels an hour before the listed closing time, and what's worse they still leave the open sign up and out in the sidewalk. So if you drive by the look they are still serving--it's not until you park and go in that you find out there are no bagels left. They close at 12pm, but I wouldn't go after 11am unless you are willing to be disappointed. I've also seen dogs sitting on chairs at tables here, eating treats off the table more than once, which is a bit too dog friendly if you ask me. I have two dogs, and I would never even consider eating-in here due to the total lack of basic, sensible dog related health code enforcement.

Andy M.

Yelp
I'm just rating them based on the other bagels in Portland. Bernsteins is far and away the best bagel in town. I gave them five stars. I used to work at bagel shop owned by a Jewish guy from New York who educated me on bagels, and what makes a good one. I think Bentley's is the second best bagel here, although Bowery is close. Both are totally decent. Henry Higgins is solidly mediocre, and Spielmans aren't as good as the bagels at Whole Foods.
google avatar

Louis O.

Yelp
I've had bagels here a few times - usually an egg & cheese, & I've ended up sick with a tummy ache every time. I've also gotten coffee here and it's been absolute garbage every time. I've given them a few chances but no more. The food just isnt good.
google avatar

Isabelle S.

Yelp
The bagel was solid and it's in a convenient location which is super nice! They were super quick, the only thing is i wish they had vegan cream cheese. Overall good spot!

Terrance H.

Yelp
I've been 3 times now because it is in the neighborhood and I appreciate a nice walk when the weather is appropriate here in PDX to Bentley's. 2/3 times that I have gone, my order is incorrect. I mostly order to-go so I never check my order before leaving, assuming they've gotten it correct...nope. I guess "plain" sounds like "everything" when ordering lol. Sadly, i'm disappointed at the inconvenience and inconsistency.
google avatar

Brent W.

Yelp
Great, proper bagels and they make good espresso drinks as well. Friendly folks and they have breakfast bagels as well. East Coasters will not be disappointed.
google avatar

Mitch C.

Yelp
If you order a bagel toasted here, they toast the outside of it, whole. WTF. The bagels are also about half the size of a normal bagel, and cost about $5 each with cream cheese. Food quality is average at best (bagels are a bit tough, texture feels a bit stale - again, they could really use a proper toasting), and the coffee could use some work. My sense is these are first-time business owners with little-to-no prior food & beverage experience, succeeding only due to a "cute" brand and good location. We gave them three tries. Not impressed. Won't be back.
google avatar

Kujo A.

Yelp
These bagels are the closest match to authentic New York deli-style bagels that I've discovered in Portland. The texture is spot-on, the color is visually appealing, and the crust delivers just the right amount of crunch. Coupled with outstanding customer service, these bagels offer a genuinely exceptional eating experience.
google avatar

Heather R.

Yelp
Bentley's Bagels is a great spot to get medium sized bagels. The chew and the texture are great. The employees working are always nice. I've enjoyed the types of bagels that I have gotten which are raisin, sesame, plain, and poppy seed. However, I think raisin is the best one. It's street parking for this spot. I highly recommend getting some bagels here but make sure to plan your visit. They're closed Monday- Wednesday.

Yelp
YUM! I love myself a breakfast bagel and when looking on Yelp for some spots to try Bentley's came up with great reviews. Couldn't help but appreciate the logo as well wit their dog. I can't speak to the NYC aspect of their bagels but I can tell you that they are delicious and worth a visit! Being in alphabet parking is not always the easiest but they do have some parking in front. Came by 10AM and there was already a line and even people coming in after we ordered so you know that is a good sign! | WHAT WE GOT | + Breakfast bagel on an everything bagel with sausage and scrambled eggs + Everything bagel with chive cream cheese The bagels were HUGE and oh so delicious. The bagels had a nice crunch on the outside but were nice and chewy still. I don't even think they toasted them! The breakfast bagel is a must try. They stack it high and the eggs were not overcooked and balanced out with the saltiness of the sausage patty. The chive cream cheese is also A-1 and would recommend trying it. They put a ton of smear on the bagel and do not skimp out. The smear had nice flavor and complimented the everything bagel. You will feel stuffed after finishing the whole thing. The staff is also nice and when our mocha was forgotten they worked right on getting that out for us. If you're looking to order ahead you can order their bagels via their online ordering system (not sure if you can do breakfast sandwiches).

Eunjoo K.

Yelp
Love local handmade bagel shop even the price is little bit higher than others. Service was nothing special. Taking orders and handling orders. Doesn't mean bad though. They have limited table inside but they're outside seating.
google avatar

Hector O.

Yelp
I'll keep it simple. The bagels are fresh and delicious. The crust is crunchy and the crumb light. The coffee is not bad either. The atmosphere is comfortable and welcoming. I'll be back soon!
google avatar

Gabby E.

Yelp
The worker that we talked to was super nice and friendly! She answered any questions we had and also gave us good recommendations. The owners are super nice as well and we were so happy with our bagels!

Yelp
Stopped in for a bfast Sammie this morning. Didnt disappoint. Great service and frickin delicious bagel sammie. Love this place
google avatar

Yelp
Bagel was hitting hard on this wonderful Saturday morning after a little fun the previous night Lox was superb and the cream cheese was as creamy as my jump-shot and full of a delicious(not overly powerful) chivy sensation. Wonderful work Bentleys

Yelp
Legit bagels in Portland? Yes, you heard that right! They are available for your indulgence at Bentley's Bagels on NW 21st and they are available during the Quarantine. Fresh bagels every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 7-12 noon. You can even order and pay from their website and pick up for a safe and sanitary experience. My Sunday morning treat was a poppyseed bagel with green onion cream cheese. Yum. A good bagel should be crisp on the outside with chewy dough inside - and the bagel should not require toasting to make it crisp! Now, of course you can toast if that's your preference, but you shouldn't have to in order to make it crisp. Having lived on the east coast Most of my life where NY and NJ bagels set the bar, I can tell you Bentley's hits all the marks. While the bagels are slightly smaller than most bagels in Portland, that's because most Portland bagels are on steroids! And they are quantity over quality. The size of Bentley's bagel is perfect and it's a quality bagel. During the quarantine, in addition to bagels (single, dozen, whatever you want) they have 2 types of knish, black&white cookies, and a few varieties of flavor cream cheese available. They even offer delivery. Thanks to Matt, our Yelp Community Manager, for posting this info on Instagram. I was able to get my bagel fix and discover Bentley's at the same time. Now I have two legit bagel shops in Portland for when the craving hits; Bernstein's being the other. Can't wait to go back after the quarantine when they have their full menu available! But until then, good to know that when Nothing but a NY style bagel will do, I can stop in Bentley's on the weekends. Their small shop is located on NW 21st, just before NW Kearney on the east side of the street.

Yelp
This bagel sandwich wasn't remarkable enough to offset the bad taste left in your mouth after getting swindled. There's either a lack of transparency going on here or some nefarious business practices. I ordered a scrambled egg bagel sandwich ($6) + cheddar cheese + greens + tomato ($1). All math should point to a total of being $7, however, it came out to $9. When I asked about the discrepancy the response was "we add a dollar to everything". That's a 25% markup that's not reflected before you check out. I realize food prices are rising but at least disclose that to the customer. The bagel itself was nothing to write home about. It's far too small to support a "breakfast sandwich". Half the eggs spilled over the circumference of the bagel.

Loryn G.

Yelp
These bagels are amazing! Cooked to protection! The service was very nice! The shop is really cute and clean as well.
google avatar

Chris A.

Yelp
Great low-key spot for delicious bagels and coffee in the Pearl. Also have bagel sandwiches (lox and cream cheese, bacon and egg, etc) which are made with fresh, high quality ingredients. Super friendly staff as well.

Taylor W.

Yelp
Clearly the owners who came up with their recipe for "New York style bagels" has never actually had the pleasure of having a New York style bagel. I came here very excited to try their bagels as I just moved to the neighborhood and this place is walking distance. I was very disappointed. Expensive, small, no flavor, all around not worth the price. They weren't disgusting just not what expected when I saw they were "New York style bagels" Also their hours of 7am-12pm seem a little limited for people who start their days later. My bagel search continues.
google avatar

Breanna W.

Yelp
Great service, delicious bagels, and good coffee! Friendly staff and were in and out in 5 mins on a Saturday morning.
google avatar

Vicky C.

Yelp
@eatswithvick on Instagram! I'm a bagel snob after New York City's greatness, and the bagel scene in Portland is rough. Bentleys is probably the top contender for any comparison of an east coast bagel. Super fresh, soft inside, love their everything bagel - great flavor. Their lox is solid and they give a solid amount of cream cheese. Only downside is I feel like when I asked for it toasted it's never quite warm, maybe I just need to it faster. Overall would recommend for anyone looking for a bagel downtown, there aren't many other places to find one this good

Sarah K.

Yelp
BEST BAGELS IN PORTLAND! I do have to say, they don't toast their bagels enough, but simply ask for it double toasted:)
google avatar

Andrea K.

Yelp
Average spot but service is pretty bad. They consistently get your orders wrong or mixed up. Bagels are ok but not worth it when they dont get your order right multiple times. There are plenty of other bagel spots in Portland.
google avatar

Laila D.

Yelp
Honestly not too crazy about this place. Bacon was burnt, the bagel was hard and dry and the egg could've been made at McDonald's but with less flavor. The only Good thing about this place was my orange juice! Other than that- I'd probably skip bentleys bagels while in Portland.

John S.

Yelp
They changed their prices but haven't changed them on the actual pricing sheet? What a joke of a business. They also tried to charge me twice and while refunding me, still refunded me the wrong amount.

Taylor D.

Yelp
These are the closest to New York deli-style bagels I have found in Portland. Very good texture, good color, good crust.

J C.

Yelp
Bagel and cream cheese combo + tomato and onion so good we came two days in a row. It was also cute that the register girl remembered us from the day before. Drip coffee was surprisingly good as well. Expect your bagel to be a bit smaller than other shops, but it was so good we didn't care. Took off one star because the first day we came, they gave me the smallest slices of tomato and I could barely tell if there were any pieces of onion compared to the second day (see picture). Tomato was $1, onion was 50c extra. They can be more consistent with their add-ons. Note: They only allow one party inside at a time for ordering. Once your order, you go back outside and wait for them to bring your food out to you.
google avatar

Erin G.

Yelp
The bagels are great. Something is ALWAYS missing in the bag. Ordered a bacon egg sandwich, received a bacon sandwich no egg. Ordered bagels with cream cheese on the side. Cream cheese missing from the bag. Why in Portland do we have to tip 15,20,25% at every establishment when we do everything short of making the actual food?

Curtis S.

Yelp
Awesome bagels and awesome service! They came through in a pinch and made my work meeting that much better with their bagels.
google avatar

Danielle H.

Yelp
Decided to give this place a try and almost missed it as we were driving by. Their sign is just posted on the door, so you might not see it if you're not paying attention. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by two bright and lovely women at the register. We were the only ones there, but they soon had an influx of people come in back to back. They were so sweet and helpful with each person they served! There's about 4 tables inside, with a seating capacity of about 15ish people. We opted to sit down and eat our bagels. It's a nicely lit place with a couple outlets (for those who have electronics in need of charging). My fiancé and I both got the egg and bacon sandwiches, which you're able to have your eggs cooked to any style you'd like. I got mine scrambled; he got his sunny side up. I wanted mine on an Everything bagel, toasted, and I was quite impressed with the bagel! It had an amazing crisp to it, the scrambled egg was nice and fluffy, and the bacon was a nice tasty addition. The bagels were on the smaller side, but man, I would definitely go back and try some toasted bagels with their cream cheese.
google avatar

Meng K.

Yelp
There was a line on Sunday at 9am out the doors, and they only allow one person or party inside at a time. I enjoyed my breakfast bagel sandwich - they were generous with the bacon, the eggs were fluffy, And the bagel was crispy on the outside. However calling it NYC style bagel is a bit of a stretch - it's pretty small for $6.50 and the everything bagel didn't have much taste to it.
google avatar

Dawn S.

Yelp
Love this place - the bagels are fab and you should definitely try their bagel sandwiches. I will get bacon, egg, and cheese - it's always PERFECT! The staff and owners are welcoming. I've been enjoying this neighborhood spot since they opened. Due to COVID, they reduced the days they are open, which somehow has made Thursday mornings something to look forward to since that is the first day of the week they are open! They have given Thursdays new meaning!

John M.

Yelp
We were housesitting nearby and needed a place for a quick breakfast. Bentley's was perfect! Delicious freshly made bagel sandwiches and coffee right on our way to the streetcar stop. It's a small place with a couple picnic tables outside, so it's best for to-go orders. Staff is friendly and efficient. The bagels were better than I'd expected. We went there 2-3 times during our stay and usually got the egg, cheese and bacon on a bagel. Highly recommend if you want a good bagel breakfast.

Lindsay B.

Yelp
This place is sooooo slow. Think your grabbing a quick bagel with cream cheese? Think again! Unless you have 30 minutes to wait, keep going. I thought maybe this was a pandemic issue previously- but it's the same now even with the place full of employees. NY style bagels- definitely not NY style speed.
google avatar

Kinsey F.

Yelp
Waited for almost 30 minutes to get one basic bagel sandwich. The bagel itself was good, but just the way they handled my almost 30 minute wait time for this sandwich was a bit unfavorable as they worked to get an order out with 20 ahead of my solo order. I understand having worked in the service industry that the flow can be messed up, but it is crucial to keep the smaller orders moving while the big ones are being filled. I will try somewhere different when I go back to Portland, sadly. It seemed like a cute place, I just think there is more out there!
google avatar

Matt E.

Yelp
Judging by my Corona-calendar it had been at least six weeks since I had last had a bagel and lox, and I was OVER IT! I made it my mission to find a spot that was a) still open, b) still serving lox during the rapture, and c) seemed cute and nice because I've been sorely lacking on cute and nice businesses lately. Turned out to be pretty easy, as Bentley's was the first place I scoped out and they checked all my boxes. Off I went! A salt bagel with lox and all the accompaniments, minus tomato. Since I already knew exactly what I wanted, I didn't give the menu much of a look. But when that order came out? I was in heaven. I don't pretend to be a bagel expert by any means, but let me tell you; this was gooooooood. I was a happy boy. I paired it with an almond milk latte, which was good as well. Also, this place is pretty adorable, and it seems the namesake Bentley is a dog. I can get behind that. I look forward to actually spending more times inside the business just as soon as they're allowed.
google avatar

Katelyn L.

Yelp
I would like to add the owner contacted me and apologized and was very nice. This is an amazing place to get a bagel in PDX.
google avatar

Ben B.

Yelp
The bagels here are pretty darn good but you've really got to train your staff on proper hand washing. I watched the man making the bagels blow into his glove before putting it on, how he's unaware that this is unsanitary is kind of baffling. He also touched his beard and face multiple times. Please be more careful when preparing peoples food. Thank you
google avatar

Brittany J.

Yelp
I love this place so much. The bagels are great & I think they do a good job with their NY style although they're probably a little bit smaller than a traditional new york bagel, but it's fine with me. the staff is kind & the place itself is quaint and so cute. I'm a traditionalist with my bagels and usually get the everything bagel w/ onion and chive cream cheese, which hits the spot every time. The coffee is Roseline coffee which is pretty good, no complaints there. Prices are really fair(especially their lox!) and I love that they open at 7am for the early risers, or so I can stop in before work. So happy this place opened in my neighborhood. I'll be back.
google avatar

Jamie C.

Yelp
Cutest little shop! & oh so delicious bagels & spreads. Good selection even for coming an hour before close. I can't wait to come back. The staff was super friendly, the bagels are even friendlier. Def a NW recommend.
google avatar

Synclaire W.

Yelp
I mean this is the best place ever. Doesn't even compareeeee to any other bagel places in PDX. I legit go here almost every weekend and stock UP! I get them in bulk, freeze them and then toast when I want them and they are delicious. The cream cheese is awesome!!! The Salt bagel is the most amazing thing ever with chive cream cheese. The line around the corner in the mornings does all the explaining for this place!!
