"Head to this longtime neighborhood sandwich spot, which has been open since 1972, after exploring the trails around La Cañada. The no-fuss menu has all the classics like tomato soup, pastrami on rye, and a tuna melt. The mellow interior is a time capsule of the 1970s, down to its wood-paneled walls." - Rebecca Roland

At the split of my deliveries in 100 degree heat I decided to try something new. And boy am I glad I chose Berge’s. What lovely people they’ve got running the place! And exceptionally good food that tastes like lunch at home, made with love. I walked through that door and they greeted me like family, like good friends. I ordered the turkey and avocado sandwich, a piece of baklava and a complimentary sample of their tomato soup. As soon as I sat down to wait on my meal, I stood right back up cause it was ready in less than a minute. I will be coming back to explore kore of the menu here. Thanks Berge for a great lunch break!! 🫶🏼

Well, as they say… “they don’t make ‘em like this anymore.” What a DELIGHTFUL experience at Berge’s. I had the turkey & avocado, while another friend has the grilled cheese & tomato basil bisque soup. Both were so, so good. When one of the employees had realized 2 of us in our party of three hadn’t tried the soup… they sent over 2 smaller cups to make sure we got to experience the magic. We talked with one of the employees who has been working at Berge’s since ‘95. The level of care that goes into the time the shred the fresh lettuce, ensure the purchasing high quality meats, and expertly make the same soup every day makes for a deli experience people want to be a part of over and over again. There is something about a laminate wood paneled shop that just does it for me. Especially one where the owner sits in a corner, makes sure every is getting what they need, monitoring it all while competing a crossword. The start serving 2 different soups a daily when the weather cools off, and I personally cannot wait until I get to write to you all again about when I get my hands on a Berge’s tuna melt.

Google
I love it here! Sandwhiches are amazing and simple. The tomato bisque is the best tomato soup I've had. They make it fresh daily! The service is amazing as well. The workers are friendly and attentive. We received everything quickly. The pickles are nice too! They come with the sandwhiches.

Google
For 50 years Berge's has ranked as a favorite dining spot. We loved the staff who asked carefully how we wanted our sandwiches customized to our taste. The fresh-baked bread and homemade ingredients result in perfect sandwiches. Queeny Yeghiaian, the wife of Berge who created the shop 50 years ago but sadly has passed, was sititng in the dining area watching to make sure every customer was satisfied. We talked to her after our meal to let her know it was just as good as the Google Reviews had promised.

Google
We were on vacation and this was the best sandwich we’ve got. The nice man preparing the lovely food offered their homemade soup which was amazing! Thank you very much Sir! Greetings from Germany.

Google
Best beef hot sandwich I have had in a long time! Thats my sandwich and I’ve tried it at multiple places. It’s delicious here and comes with the pickles and Aus jus sauce which is very flavorful. The business owner is so nice and the atmosphere was very pleasant. I will definitely be coming back real soon!

We ordered a pastrami sandwich, a tomato basil soup, and a side of pickles. The soup was a bit too garlicky for my liking. But the pastrami sandwich was decent at best. It tasted homemade and simple.

My dad has been going here since he was young I think about Berge's (delicious) Sandwiches often and admire the quaint folksy atmosphere. This is the best sandwich shop in LC!

Yelp
This is one of situations where I "found" this place again after many years. Used to come her back in the 80s when I worked in this area. Almost weekly. Great big menu, lots of great sandwiches, soup, chili and even dessert. Meatless sandwich options too. Ordered the Tomato Bisque Soup, an amazing Turkey Avocado on focaccia and a Pastrami Sandwich, on rye made the traditional way. No pickles. Great little shop, family owned. When he described his father I knew that was the man I used to order from back in the day. Walls show plaques and pictures showing their contributions to the community such as sponsoring many baseball teams and a proud sponsor of dozens of Rose Bowl Parade floats. A grade, clean, plenty of seating but for the most part I think people get it to go. Still can't believe it's been here for this long and I was here 40 yrs ago. . Yelp hours are incorrect, better call and see. Also closed Sunday and Monday now. Prices were very cheap, however the owner stated the menu is changing soon. Seems like this is the last place to raise their prices like everyone else's. Def worth a visit. When back the next day and got a Tuna Melt which was also good. Best around. Nostalgia helps

Yelp
Been going here since the early 90 s with the same guy remembering what I eat and making my sandwich, then he moved to the register and trained the next guy to do it. I love this place. You will too.

Jaime R.

Yelp
My recent visit to Berge's left everything to be desired, with unfortunate consequences. Too bad too, I was really looking forward to having a new go to sandwich place. Regrettably, I got food poisoning after eating their pastrami sandwich for lunch this past Thursday. This, understandably, impacted my perception of the establishment. I will not be coming back to Berge's. Beyond the health concerns, the quality of the pastrami sandwich itself was subpar. The rye bread was disappointingly soggy, and the pastrami, rather than being succulent, was extremely dry. For those craving a superior pastrami experience, I'd recommend exploring other options in the area. Schreiner's Fine Sausages offers a better pastrami sandwich that won't make you ill.

Yelp
Really good hole in the wall spot the turkey avocado sandwich was delicious !!!! Old buisness , fast customer service

Carlin S.

Yelp
Amazing sandwich shop! I enjoy going here by myself or with friends and getting the BLT or Club sandwich. They have great hospitality and even better prices. Highly recommend everyone stopping by when visiting La Cañada!

Heather M.

Yelp
Yummy tomato bisque! The sandwiches are excellent! This place is an LC staple! The only bad thing is their hours but food wise it's great!

Tq G.

Yelp
Tuna was too fishy. And the bread was supposed to be toasted sourdough. My bread was neither toasted nor was it sourdough. I got it to go so I didn't know until I got home. Staff was super friendly, it's just not the restaurant for me.

Artur S.

Yelp
Nice and mom and pop shop. Good sandwhiches, order before you go so its ready when you get there. Prices are fair. If you get the blt ask them for extra bacon. Ambience is good, good for a family with kids.

Regan E.

Yelp
This place is perfect if you are craving a classic deli sandwich for a good price. They have an option for everyone including salads, soups, sweets, meatless sandwiches, cold sandwiches, hot sandwiches, and deli sandwiches. This place has everything yet everything is so simple!! This sandwich shop feels like you're in a movie as well from the wood paneled walls, retro decor, and it is so clean. Their stock for their sodas, produce, etc is laid out on the ground near the register which is such a sweet and almost un-ironic touch if that's even a word. There were three people working in the restaurant this day. The prep worker, the cook, and the owner of the restaurant. Everyone was so sweet, happy, and attentive. No complaints on any fronts! I put 4 stars for the restaurant because it wasn't the most beautiful and best sandwich I have ever had, BUT I appreciated everything else about it!!! Would definitely come here again and again and have already recommended it to friends who live in the area.

Mary A.

Yelp
Great little sandwich place with friendly people and tasty food. The tomato soup is a popular item and unique in flavors.

Dorothy G.

Yelp
This shop has been around for over 50 years. A family owned business. I've never been disappointed with the sandwiches and soups! Fresh and delicious!

Marta R.

Yelp
Sandwiches are great! Made to order to your desired! My son always picks the grilled roast beef with cheese and I choose the albacore tuna sandwich. Ingredients are fresh and high quality. Owners and staff are always efficient plus friendly! I would highly recommend this sandwich shop!

Da L.

Yelp
Good sandwiches and soup! The pastrami is lean so I don't feel too guilty. I will definitely come back

Brian B.

Yelp
After an afternoon stroll at Descanso gardens, my wife and I came across Berge's threshold. It is a delightfully immersive experience to a genuine sandwich shop. It was fantastic throwback when ordering a Reuben Sandwich was without regret or avocado. The bread was crispy and thick enough to not fall apart in to a soggy mess. The high quality ingredients including the corned beef because pastrami isn't in a Reuben, that is another sandwich, was heartwarming. We also took an Italian hero to go which was equally impressive. I would go back to Descanso gardens in the spring and endure an allergic event so I could go back for another sandwich. Bravo!

Derek D.

Yelp
Do you miss the 80's? Do you like good food? Do you like nice people and good Service? Do you like wood paneling? You can find all of that here at Berge's! Can't wait to go back.

Adam G.

Yelp
Great sandwiches! I've come here for years and you can't go wrong with anything. Turkey avocado is great, roast beef with cream cheese and olives is a superior unexpected surprise of flavor. Also, the pastrami on rye is great on a cold day. The tomato bisque is on point as well for a cold day in a delicious wonderland.

Keri L.

Yelp
Delicious sandwiches and such zesty, tasty tomato bisque soup. I had the grilled turkey cheddar and hubby had the pastrami. Both sandwiches had succulent, lean meats and served with crunchy pickles on the side. We met the owner, Queenie, who was just lovely to talk with. Highly recommend!

Sang-a Y.

Yelp
Came here after going to Descanso Gardens. I got the turkey avocado sandwich, which was pretty good. He also gave me a sample of the tomato soup, and I liked how the tomato soup wasn't salty so I think I'll get it next time!

Kat N.

Yelp
Um..I haven't done more then just look at the lunch goodies in my box I ordered to go and I'm already ready to write a review. First of all- you know you can never go wrong with a "hole in the wall" spot, if you will. Extremely friendly, everyone in there looked so happy including the workers- I almost grabbed a table instead to experience this more. The food smells and looks incredible, decent portions, and MYYYY golly you can NOT beat the price. I am so glad I had to wait out traffic in this area because this spot needs to be known about. I will 100% be returning whether I'm in the area or not. Got the tomato soup as everyone seemed to rave about it (comes with a piece of incredible bread), mac salad, and the submarine with all the extra fixins. I got chips too and it came with pickles (I'm starved okay haha I almost grabbed a cookie they were big and soft omg I should have). All at 20 bucks. Thank you Berges!!!!!!

Carey I.

Yelp
It feels so good to scratch an itch. That how I felt when I bite into the grilled artichoke on sourdough with a side of chili from Berge's. And I gotta say, the pickles, oh man, that is heaven. I liken the artichoke sandwich to a tuna melt or chicken salad sandwich with a artichoke flavor to it. The dressing over powers the artichoke creating a milder subtlety. It's very different then the grilled or deep fried artichoke panini. With the side of chili, it's a perfect pair on a cold LA winter. It's an institution of La Canada Flintridge and I'm glad I can still support my local business with wo much pleasure.

Ashley B.

Yelp
Very friendly staff. I came in here for lunch on a Wednesday afternoon and ordered a tomato garlic bisque and a grilled roast beef sandwich. The roast beef was superb! I don't know what it was, but it was super flavorful without being salty or too moist or too dry. The soup was just okay. I wouldn't consider it to be a bisque, as it had a plethora of veggie chunks on it. It wasn't anything I'd order again. But I'd definitely come back for the sandwiches.

Ken B.

Yelp
Hit this place up by chance today and was so happy we did. Me and my son each loved our sandwich- i got a hot pastrami and he got a turkey. He's a notoriously picky eater, yet he loved his as much as I did. On top of all that the service was quick and friendly and overall great experience. Support small businesses like these. It's so important.

Sareen L.

Yelp
Here is an updated menu! John is the sweetest man ever! He will also stay open later than closing time if there are customers so always give a call. Food is also amazing and they use the leanest meat.

Addison T.

Yelp
My son always eats the food here and eats well. At other restaurants, he'll just eat rice. It's got them in some thing. Obviously the owner is a great pleasure to do business with as well and the place is always clean and peaceful!

Caroline G.

Yelp
The sandwiches are delish and definitely don't sleep on the tomato soup! Portions are perfect even though prices feel a little high.

R B.

Yelp
WOW! Have been involved with a NexDoor forum on tuna melts and the posters raved abut Berge's. Had the tuna melt, $10, and it was spectacular. Superfresh rustic bread, perfectly fried. Tuna salad was spiced. Cheese melty and flavorful. Tomato bisque was some of the best I have ever had! Can't wait to go back!

Megan M.

Yelp
Pastrami Sandwich was amazing bread was so fresh! Very much made with Love. The Reuben was also amazing and I loved the thousand island sauce on it!

K H.

Yelp
Great Sandwiches....The Pastrami is Delicious!! The tomato bisque soup & chili are delicious & perfect on a cold rainy day. Owners & staff are friendly & welcoming. Seating area is also welcoming & always clean. My favorite sandwich stop in the Foothills!

Joshua R.

Yelp
When driving by it looks like your everyday tired little old neighborhood institution deli/sandwich shop. And while walking in can indeed feel like stepping back in time, don't let the dark windows deter you from the amazing food here. These guys really pack on the meat unlike other places. The guy at the cash register was pretty helpful, too, since this was my first time here. It won't be the last! Note: being the only true main thoroughfare in the self-proclaimed "village" of LCF, traffic on Foothill Blvd can be hauling like a mini-freeway at times. So unless you plan on risk getting your driver side mirror or door knocked off, I'd play it safe and park in the back parking lot, even if it's a snug fit. You can also enter into the restaurant through the back door.

Stephanie L.

Yelp
I should probably order something else but I never do. Turkey and avocado just hits the spot. Always say yes when they ask if you want some pickles. Parking is available in the back lot or on the street.

Jennifer L.

Yelp
Grabbed some sandwiches to go before heading to Descanso Garden. The sandwiches were fresh and delicious. Pickle was addicting. Tomato bisque was tart and sweet. My favorite was the Italian sub with everything. Really enjoyed the sauce and meat!

Lori V.

Yelp
We've driven passed Berges several times and I had a hunch that it would be good. It has that old established neighborhood deli feel. I'm so glad we decided to come in and give it a try. We ordered a turkey and avocado sandwich and a hot pastrami sandwich. The turkey was stacked high with a generous amount of avocado. And the pastrami was high quality, served on toasted rye and was absolutely delicious!! We will be visiting again soon!! It seems their prices are reasonable compared to other places.

Brett M.

Yelp
food is adequate but the owner / nighttime order taker is beyond obnoxious. Instead if listening to your order he interrupts and says "you must not come here" ... "we don't have mediums it must be a regular." Hope you don't want to tell him what you want on the sandwich because he will tell you what's on it. Here's a tip - skip the comedy act and pretend your customer is paying for the food and act like you respect that. We will never repeat.

Moses S.

Yelp
The turkey club sandwich was tasty, the staff was very friendly, and the ambiance was good!

Karen R.

Yelp
The food was amazing. I got a club sandwich, turkey avocado and pastrami. Yum! First time in won't be my last! Owner has been there over 40 years and employees are pleasant, thoughtful and kind. Can't wait for cold weather to get more soup options.

Armen M.

Yelp
Pastrami sandwich A Peanut butter jelly A+ Was really impressed with the lean savory taste to the pastrami. It also wasn't an overwhelming amount of meat which was nice for a change. I was able to finish the whole sandwich and not feel stuffed. Definitely would come back.

Bina T.

Yelp
Another work day, another day to decide where to eat for lunch. Working in Montrose doesn't give us a lot of options, which is why I was skeptical of this place. It's small and you almost don't notice it when you're driving down the street. It's paired with a restaurant next door as well. Immediately when you walk in, you get really homey vibes. The wooden walls, the various fridges, the boxes and boxes of soda lined up against the wall, and the chairs and tables are reminiscent of an old, homey, cabin home. There are pictures up on the wall as well as an older woman who uses one of the front tables as her personal desk (love her!). We went up to order as first-timers. I got the roast beef dip & my boss got an extra large sandwich (I honestly forgot which one he got). They asked if we wanted the pickles - of course, we said yes. The cashier was SO sweet, and so nice, and joked around with us before letting us know that our order will be right out. We sat down and waited and to our surprise, the place filled up. Soon, all the tables and chairs were filled & people had to stand in order to wait for their food. It was a bit of a wait (there were a LOT of people coming in) but the cashier came around and personally handed us our sandwiches, which I thought was a nice touch. He sent us off with a smile and wave. Back at the office, we both opened our sandwiches and to my surprise, the sandwiches were BIG. My boss ordered the extra large so his sandwich could have easily been shared between three different people. He ended up finishing one half of the sandwich and saving the other half for later. My roast beef dip was amazing. I was disappointed that I had forgotten to ask for cheese with it - I will definitely not make that mistake next time. The bread underneath was unfortunately super soggy, but make no mistake: it was absolutely delicious. The roast beef was soft and juicy, and this was BEFORE I dipped it in the consomme that they gave me. My boss thoroughly enjoyed his sandwich as well. After we finished lunch, we agreed that we would be regular at this place from now on!

Daniel L.

Yelp
Let me start by saying that the food is worth 5 stars. I tried the Hot Pastrami on rye with cheese and it was so good. The pastrami was very tender, the rye bread was perfectly toasted. The only thing I did not like was that it did not have enough meat for my liking. Maybe I'm just used to towering pastrami sandwiches like Brent's Deli. I also ordered a cup of Chile which was good not phenomenal. Another big plus is the speed at which they turned my food out, I barely washed my hands and my food was ready. They also have ample on site parking. If I was able to do 4.5 stars I would because the pastrami sandwich is damn near perfect.

Houman E.

Yelp
Summary: great sandwich shop ... no bells or whistles and I don't even remember seeing a hood in the kitchen but it works! Great sandwiches!! We ordered 2 sandwiches: Tuna melt and a grilled cheese sandwich with tomatoes . Really delicious! Hard to go wrong with the press but they nailed it! Prices are reasonable and lots of parking spots! Service: not much interaction but that's okay given the ambiance! Older lady in the back with a younger man working the counter.... again, not much interaction with the team but it works!!! Conclusion: for what we ordered, wonderful. If you are in the area, call ahead and pick up a sandwich...

Eric H.

Yelp
Old school sandwich shop, family-owned and operated since 1972. I came here for the staples - The Turkey and Avocado Sandwich and the Tomato Bisque. Both were great (and the Bisque comes with Armenian Bread for dipping). The service was friendly and I was in & out in no time! Berge's - good food and good service. That's all that matters.

Gerald S.

Yelp
I went here late one afternoon and ordered the Pastrami. It was pretty disappointing. The meat was tough and thinly sliced. Kind of like pastrami you buy at the supermarket and leave in the microwave too long. I am figuring it was either a bad day or late in day. I must be wrong considering all the positive reviews.

Alex Z.

Yelp
Yes, very delicious simply put. A good grab; quick and easy, laid back. Got avocado Turkey/Grilled Cheese. I'll be going again.

Tiffany J.

Yelp
Damn good pastrami sandwich!! Fresh green salad. Barely beat the rush, but glad we did cuz the line piled up fast. Can't wait to go back and get my own instead of splitting one with my husband!

Pablo F.

Yelp
Great taste, Great value. Simple. We ordered a large Italian and a large Mortadella and they were both great. The fillings were fresh and they didnt skimp and the bread is awesome. Do I recommend? YES! Note: They've gained some popularity recently because of a write up.....the day we went they ran out of some stuff. Regardless, if youre in the area, give them a try, well worth it.

Beatrice E.

Yelp
This is my favorite sandwich shop. It's my favorite pastrami sandwich. Frankly, it's the best I've had. I drive all the way from Pasadena to eat here. I love everything about this place and have never had anything bad. Berge is a sweetheart and his staff are the friendliest people you will meet. It's also a family owned and run business which makes it more of a gem to me. If you want delicious, home cooked meals made by people who care- get in there. I realize I'm blowing the cover off of my "secret" place but word of mouth has spread so much that I am already waiting in line now and happy to direct people somewhere delicious.

Jordan G.

Yelp
Friendly staff, awesome and fresh food. The Turkey avocado is my favorite. The tomato soup and meatball sub are great too!

Elvis P.

Yelp
Berge's is an LC institution. Across the board great sandwiches that are consistently excellent (based on literal decades of patronage). My go-to has always been the roast beef and avocado but you'll do well whatever your taste is.

Sandra V.

Yelp
This is an old school, mom and pop style sandwich shop. They do not have an expansive menu, but ingredients are fresh and made in house daily. Food is fantastic. Service is friendly and efficient. Parking in the back so restaurant is easily accessible. This is the only place to eat a pastrami sandwich. When they say lean, they mean lean. Make sure to get extra pickles!

Sylvia W.

Yelp
We love Berge's! The tomato soup, the grilled roast beef and the baklava are outstanding! Highly recommend this quaint and charming sandwich shop

Anna U.

Yelp
I'm not a fan of pastrami, but did I love theirs. First time trying Berge's and I'm now obsessed. Their tomato soup is a must have.
