Located next to Hampton Park, Berkeley’s is your go-to neighborhood spot for comforting American eats like cheesesteaks and chicken cutlet sandwiches, all enjoyed on a chill patio with a splash of local charm.
"The patio at neighborhood spot Berkeley’s is the place to be for the lunch classics — a Caesar salad with a side of fries, a satisfying Rueben, or a turkey-bacon-Swiss on a squishy bun. There’s heartier fare, too, like a cheesesteak with whiz, a French dip with jus, or chicken Parmesan." - Erin Perkins
"If you shy away from the entrees, nothing is over $20 on the menu at neighborhood spot Berkeley’s. High-end sandwiches are the pull here — go for a giant chicken cutlet sandwich (Buffalo, classic, or Parmesan) for $16 and leave with leftovers." - Erin Perkins
"Berkeley’s is the Charleston version of your favorite casual neighborhood restaurant you go to for a really great lunch or dinner with friends. Located in a former service station in Hampton Park Terrace, they have an indoor/outdoor bar area with views of the kitchen (which is where you want to be), a large covered patio, and a small indoor dining space. Focus on the sandwiches, which make up most of their menu—the best one is their excellent cheesesteak with housemade cheese wiz, but anything with a chicken cutlet is usually a good call. And though you’re probably here for something on a crusty roll, any salad or entrees like cavatappi with wild mushrooms and the hanger steak are always a solid bet when you want to split a couple things." - jai jones, emily yates

"There's almost always a dog on the patio, something that this true neighborhood spot welcomes by remembering the names of regular pooches as much as their people. Secondly, when the garage door is up, Berkeley's becomes one of those magical open-air places–with seats on the outside and the insides–and there's a great feel of the breeze and the sounds of the bustling neighborhood beyond the patio. The booths are simple and so is the decor, but it's all meant to be as straightforward as the friendly service and food. Walking in, all signs seem to point to a run-of-the-mill neighborhood sandwich shop, but one glance at the drinks list and one bite of a salmon BLT and you know that something special is happening here. There's an unexpected extra step taken with everything, and from the house-made whiz on the Veggie Cheesesteak to a tried-and-true Eggplant Parm, it's clear that the people in the kitchen can cook and aren't just slinging sandwiches. While this is not a stop for those looking to have a Lowcountry dining experience, it is most certainly is for those looking to have a Charleston experience. Charleston's palate is much more diverse than shrimp and grits, and sometimes you just need a good chicken cutlet sandwich and a cold beer—but make it nice." - Stephanie Burt
