Berolina Bakery and Schreiner’s Sausages have been serving Montrose for decades - Eater LA

"Berolina Bakery, named after the feminine personification of Berlin, began as a German bakery in 1957 and has remained so through multiple ownership changes. The current owners, Anders and Youna Karlsson, hail from Sweden and Belgium respectively. Berolina remains well-loved by the Foothills community today for its delectable German-, Swedish-, and Belgian-inspired baked treats. The cardamom buns and croissants are dependably rich, while the shop’s dozen varieties of bread include olive, potato-dill, cranberry-walnut, and more. The bakery’s famous Princess cake — a Swedish confection layering custard, raspberry jam, and sponge cake under a seamless green dome of marzipan — makes a regular appearance at birthday dinners, church barbecues, and other local gatherings. Youna particularly likes the bakery’s walnut bread and its new blood orange cake, a rare update to a menu that hardly changes. Her favorite, however, is the Fridays-only Belgian waffle." - Mitchell Collins

We came here after a hike on the Beaudry Loop Hike. There's a line waiting to get inside since "only 6 are allowed inside the store at one time", but the line moved pretty. I was told that this is like a traditional Swiss bakery, and the bread looks authentic. I tried the breakfast with Bacon and it was served warm and it was good. I like the outdoor seating area with plenty of seats for a big group. You can get all the condiments for coffee and water in the little station out the door, so it was convenient. Service was great. They brought the coffee and food out.

Google
Pastries and breads are pretty good ... in an old school bakery way. Sandwiches just OK, fairly pricy ... small eating area outside. Veg soup is terrific. Service is OK, a little weird due to "only 6 people allowed inside at one time" and no cash, card only policy (to avert theft, if I understand correctly). Im sure it works for them - for customers it can get a bit confusing. Anyhow, we appreciate the decent bakery near our neighborhood!

My son used to love the mini Swedish princess cakes they used to sell at IKEA, so when he beat cancer I wanted to find him one to celebrate. I live in Tampa, Florida and haven’t found a bakery anywhere near us that makes them so after a lot of online searching I found Berolina Bakery and was so excited that they offered shipping. The cake was a bit challenging to put together but oh my goodness was it worth it! It was the most delicious cake we’ve had in a long time. It took us about 3 days to eat it all but every day it seemed to get more delicious. I’ve ordered it twice and will definitely be ordering it again in the future.

I have been ordering their Princess Cake every single year for my birthday for the last 5+ years. Just writing about it makes me want a piece! It is theeeeee best cake I have ever had in my life. I have gotten other pastries from there once, and they were great too, but I go for the cake. It's amazing!

Google
We ordered our wedding cake from Berolina and the experience was wonderful. Youna is so kind and helped us decide on the correct number of servings for our guests. The cake was a huge hit at the wedding - not only was the cake delicious, but you also don’t often see a green wedding cake, which made our wedding all the more special. Thank you Youna and Berolina for making our wedding day so memorable.

Google
Ordered a 10” princess cake in pink for a baby shower, absolutely stunning and delicious. Everyone raved about it! We were able to serve 21 guests with leftovers at the 10” size.

Google
After finding out their dog policy (for which I've no idea why they have it since everything is behind a glass and dogs are cleaner than people anyway), I choose not to patronize at this pretty average bakery. Also, not a good idea to tell your customer in the middle of buying something that dogs aren't allowed. Something is really wrong with people in LA county.

Clean and orderly. Gives me memories of my time in Denmark (even though it's swedish) Support snap businesses! Great location with outdoor seating and designated parking Can pick up online orders in store, curbside, or alley. Great fresh bread selection and hand sanitizer in store

Yelp
Everyone loved the princess cake! NOT a critique, but my only suggestion would be to please post allergy information on the website. We had two kids at the party who couldn't try to cake because of nut allergies. The bakery was closed by then, so our only hope was the website.

Yelp
I really wish I was not giving this review right now because I really like their princess cakes and they're delicious but this buffoonery is unacceptable. I ordered their pumpkin princess cake after seeing the photo on their site and I thought it would look absolutely cute on our Thanksgiving table. Unfortunately what I ordered was not what I received when I picked it up. Now I understand that a lot of times what you see online may be different to what you pick up but most of those times they at least look somewhat similar. This does not look like they even tried to replicate the photo on their site. Who made the cake on their website? Because that's who I wanted to make my cake. Sucks, I was rooting for you Berolina. What is this nonsense? :(

Yelp
I can't believe I've lived in the area for this long and have only tried Berolina Bakery for the first time recently! I came with my grandparents and we loved the sandwiches. The price is unbeatable given the insane cost of going out to eat these days. About $8-10 per sandwich. We enjoyed the pastrami panini, cold turkey sandwich, and brie panini. Highly recommend the rosemary bread for the paninis. Would love if they made a vegan tofu or chickpea sandwich! We sat outside under the shade. Fortunately found a good parking spot but it got crowded later on a weekday around 2 pm. My only complaint is that the food took a while to come out, maybe 25-30 min. Glad to see that they had a steady stream of customers though.

Yelp
Ordered ahead for their signature Swedish princess cake. It's a sponge cake with raspberry jam, whipped cream and vanilla custard. The outside is covered in a green marzipan fondant. We ordered for pickup in the morning for a lunch birthday but we got a call the evening before that the cake was ready. We weren't able to call in as their phone asks us to email. We stopped by the next day to pickup. It was quick and ready to go. However the lettering was a little off perhaps the heat melted some of the piping. Parking is available on the street and there was a good number of people enjoying their Saturday morning outside on the tables.

Yelp
I first tried this Princess Cake from a family friend in the La Canada~ Montrose Area. The family friend ONLY gets birthday cake from Berolina Bakery, particularly their Swedish Princess Cake and I totally get it now as I had to order this Princess Cake for my own grandma because she is very picky and it is not a rich, overwhelming cake. It is soooooo delicious! Everyone who has tried this cake, loved it. First of all, the beautiful green coloring of the marzipan cake is so adorable. It's so pleasing to the eye. The packaging is also very cute too. But on to the flavor of the cake itself, it is a moist, fluffy, white cake that is triple layered filled with a thin and delicate raspberry jam fill, a beautifully whipped vanilla, and cream. This is a traditional Swedish cake. It is marvelous and you can't help but get another slice. You don't feel guilty eating this cake like you do with overly buttery or heavy fudge cakes packed with frosting. It is the best cake I ever had actually. This cake is pure delicacy and can easily be enjoyed with tea or coffee. Honestly it's so good I may just order this cake for my own birthday. They have a counterpart to this Princess Cake called the Prince Cake and that is a chocolate type of cake which I'm sure is magnificent and will have to try when I'm back soon. I actually learned that back in the day my grandma used to take the bus and stop by to get pastries from this Montrose bakery. She loves baked goods especially when the authentic taste and craftsmanship is there transporting her to Europe!

Yelp
Berolina is credit only, no cash. The inability to except legal tender for bread is too suspicious. The war on money too controlling for me.

Sharon P.

Yelp
As soon as I walked into the bakery I was greeted by a cheerful sales associate . I bought delicious rosemary bread & a vanilla late . Had to eat some bread on my way home . The bakery is very clean and the pastry cases are lovely . I will continue to support this neighborhood bakery . Give them a try . You will not be disappointed ! They have great sandwiches too !

Yelp
The Crookie! What's that? It's the latest IG/Tik Tok craze has made it's way from Maison Louvard in Paris to LA. Basically a butter croissant with chocolate chip cookie baked on the top and stuffed with cookie dough in the middle. I just had to try one! Just happen to be strolling in south Ocean View, Montrose by chance since I was in the area doing errands. Walked in and I was surprised to see "The Crookie". The lady in front of me was trying to convince me to get the Bammsugare Vacuum which is what this place is known for as well as the Swedish Princess Cake. My mind and tummy was focused on "The Crookie". Those other two items are old news. This combo makes for a great family: Flakey butter croissant married to chocolate cookie with baby cookie dough inside. For $5.99, this thing was dense and full of good calories. Berolina is somewhat tucked on the south end of Montrose which is sometimes forgotten. Worth a drive down Ocean View Ave towards this way to enjoy the small time mid Century feel. Great to support the great local family businesses down here.

Yelp
my neighbor gave me half a Christmas Decorated Princess Cake with raspberry filling. It was very delicious not too sweet and not dry at all! yummy and pretty

Donald S.

Yelp
Today 3/5/2035 I decided to have a pastry at Berolina and was disappointed in the customer service quality. Very dry atmosphere and the lady that took my order was also very dry they Do Not greet you as if you are welcome . The place doses Not feel friendly. I was not asked if I wanted my pastry warm up . Such lack of energy and customer service. To top it off they did not have cheese cake they were low on many items . Food quality is not fresh neither and it's overpriced. I would not recommend. Such an unwelcoming vibe.

Yelp
Love the more compact bread now. (Health & Whole Wheat breads) It's much less airy and doesn't fall apart when you slice it. Thank you.

Yelp
I had tea down the block and decided to stop in to Berolina to try some Swedish baked goods since I haven't had them before. How lucky are we that we get to have treats from around the world here in LA County! How fun. It's located in a little shopping strip with a small parking lot. I couldn't find parking in the lot but was able to snag a spot in the residential area a block away. There are tables on the sidewalk for those who want to enjoy their food there. There's a line outside with instructions that they allow 6 people in at a time. I entered the shop and was wowed by all the beautiful baked items behind the glass. I was really impressed by the artistic skill it takes to make these pastries, many of them are twisted and knotted and transformed into these edible works of art! They also have a bunch of different loaves of bread in baskets behind the register. If you want some packaged Swedish goodies and merchandise, they have some on a shelf for purchase as well! There were 4 girls helping customers and they were friendly and helpful. I asked the girl helping me about which loaf of bread I should try as I wanted one with a softer interior like a white bread, and she gave me some recommendations. I was intrigued by their green Princess cake so I had to get a slice of that. In addition, I got: Prince cake slice Austrian Bread loaf 2 Kouign Ammans (regular & chocolate) Almond Croissant Saffron Bun w/ Almond paste Swedish Cardamom Bun Swedish Cinnamon Bun Cheese danish bun Apple danish bun It's interesting to compare the Swedish version of these baked goods to a French version. I am used to the french style Kouign Amman and croissants that are airy, buttery, and flaky. The Swedish ones are dense and bready. In fact, all the items I ordered across the board are dense and bready, so that seems to be the style of Swedish baking. Not bad, just different. I didn't realize that cardamom was such a prevalent spice in Sweden so that was neat to taste it in a pastry. The prince and princess cake that everyone seems to love was just average in my opinion. It is definitely a unique cake with a beautiful color scheme and a cool dome shape, but it didn't wow me. I liked the Austrian bread once you toast it a bit. I'd love to come back and try different loaves if I'm in the area again!
google avatar

Cynthia P.

Yelp
Came in because they were featured in an article with their neighboring business. Kouign amann was pretty good but the rectangle chocolate brownie looking cookies with sugar dusted on top were so so so BAD. I threw them out immediately.

Yelp
i go to Sweden once a year and i eat the Princess Cake every chance i get in Stockholm. This January my Swedish wife got me a Princess Cake as my birthday cake from Berolina Bakery and i can tell you it was AS GOOD as in Sweden.

Yelp
I wish I could give TEN STARS! Been going to Berolina's Bakery for many, many years. Couldn't recommend more highly. Their pastries are wonderful! My particular favorite is the chocolate eclair. I could eat them every day. Enjoy!
google avatar

Frank D.

Yelp
We celebrated our daughters 2nd bday & bought the Swedish strawberry cake. It was baked fresh & we pre ordered online. Since we returned from Stockholm this past summer while on vacation, we saw they had the Swedish cinnamon rolls. We bought a few & they tasted just like we had them while in Sweden. Staff is very friendly & a great place to shop. Thank you & see you soon!

Yelp
I had heard rave reviews about this bakery, so I decided to stop by and see for myself. Upon entering, I was warmly welcomed by the friendly staff who graciously assisted me. The array of pastries and desserts was truly impressive! I couldn't resist trying the cookie croissant, which lived up to its reputation. Additionally, I picked up some fresh sourdough bread, baked to perfection. Please note that only six customers are allowed inside at once. Kindly adhere to the guidelines and show courtesy to others.
google avatar

Martina T.

Yelp
Tried to call them to ask questions but very hard to get a hold of. They only work via email. The phone system is only for pick up orders, they cannot answer any questions and are not well informed to do so. The Swedish princess cake ($38.95), is very well priced and presents beautifully, however, it lacked taste and creaminess. The sponge cake portion was not very good. Definitely was easy to pass on this cake.

John D.

Yelp
World class pastries. The best croissant you can get this far from France. The princess cake is their premier dessert. I'm not big on cake but that thing is perfect.

Jamie D.

Yelp
My wife has always wanted a Princess cake and Berolina delivered! My mother-in-law even came back for a second piece!

Yelp
Best bakery ever. Reluctant to post a 5 star because you all will just come and crowd me out.

Yelp
We love Berolina Bakery! We love the princess cake although I wish you didn't run out of slices. We love the cookies and the breads!

Yelp
Barolina is not the same anymore. We used to go to Barolina almost every week but we didn't go for a year or so. Not sure if the management changed but it's turned into a horrible place. It used to serve coffee in China/porcelain cups and plates now it's paper cups and a box for your pastry. People who work there are the unhappiest people alive. God forbid you ask for a fork, they look at you like you ask for a kidney. Not coming back ever again. Oh yeah, they don't take cash anymore only card with a forced "tip" section. Quality of coffee and pastry is really bad now. Never coming back. Save your money go some other place.
google avatar

Melody N.

Yelp
This place holds a tender place in my heart. I've been coming here for 15+ years now, and still go every week for fresh bread and a sweet treat. There isn't a bread or pastry we've tried that we haven't liked. Had the princess cake with custom pink fondant for a recent birthday and it was absolutely perfect. The ladies behind the counter are very helpful when I ask for new recommendations. Also, weekday morning breakfasts sitting outside on their patio is so lovely.
google avatar

Renee D.

Yelp
There are so many wonderful pastries and desserts here. The lunches are just OK. For Pasties our go to is the chocolate Kouigi Amann. Is the perfect blend of flakey pastry with chewy interior with a caramelly sweetness with a smooth dark chocolate topping. (Imagine a chocolate croissant, but better! ). Our other go to pastry is the Princess Cake with its green marzipan fondant icing, whip cream and raspberry jam filling with heavenly fluffy white cake! Love it. Things that annoy me are the cashless payment and only allowing a few customers in the shoppe at a time. It's 2024... let's get on with life.

Nana F.

Yelp
I used their pick up service in the back alley during Covid. It was very handy. I think their products were better then. I've never bought cake there; only pastries, sandwiches, and soup. Their products are quite expensive. A tuna sandwich I recently purchased was nearly $20. Yikes. It was fresh and delicious, but for some reason, wrapped whole and not cut in half. I bought their almond bow. I've tried at least three times with now, but I won't purchase it again. There was very little almond filling, and the pastry portion nothing like pastry used to be (when you could taste butter in the pastry). Definitely needed more almond paste. Their soups are always fresh and good. I've had the creme of mushroom and liked it a lot.

Roses P.

Yelp
Stale peanut butter cookies, called to complain but no one answers. Danishes were ok.

Yelp
Excellent pastry shop in Montrose. Street parking with a small lot nearby. Always crowded on the weekends so get here early. Friendly staff. Fast casual so order at the cashier. All outdoor seating or get it to go. Everything is delicious and reasonably priced. I definitely recommend!

Yelp
Classic example of a great bakery, large selection, well priced, great friendly service, clean , Charming atmosphere..

Yelp
Great bakery, they have a good selection of baked goods and sweets. The bread is amazing! The staff was friendly and it had a little natural vibe going that I'm totally here for!

Yelp
I placed a catering order for a baby shower this past weekend. Our food was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!! We made sure to place our order a week ahead and reserved our pick up time. Great email communication with the bakery and they made everything very easy. But the best part was the food!!!!!! This was my first time ordering from the bakery. I wanted some traditional celebratory items for my DIL who is from Sweden. We ordered the fish sandwich cake (note: sandwich cakes are special order only and must be ordered with enough lead time. contact bakery for specific details) , a custom pink princess cake as well as several loaves of cardomom bread and cinnamon strip for our brunch. So many guests had never had sandwich cake before and absolutely loved it. Thank you so much to everyone at the bakery who helped make our shower so beautiful.

K. L.

Yelp
Cute shop with outside tables, but DISAPPOINTED WITH PRINCESS CAKE. DRY, with no custard, tough marzipan, lacking sweetness overall. Marzipan had good flavor, but couldn't penetrate with your plastic fork and had to hold with my thumb while all the boring whipped cream came out. Anyone who used to buy the princess cake at Federicos in Pasadena will be disappointed. Please add oil or butter to your cake mix, and other missing ingredients. I appreciate that you have slices, but what a shame when a fantastic cake is so within reach! Claros Italian Market has a much better one. Didn't taste anything else at Berolinas but looks promising.
google avatar

Elvira D.

Yelp
I love this bakery so much. This is home to the one and only authentic Swedish Princess Cake and no other bakery in town will have the same one, regardless if they call it the princess cake. The princess cake is a classic Swedish traditional cake used for all the celebrations one could think of. Needless to say, my husband and I had no other attachment to a bakery than Berolina's and we decided to use them for our wedding day. Let me just say that many of our guests were getting second plates because of this new flavorful cake they'd never tried before. My friend and I visited the bakery yesterday and got ourselves a thick slice of the cake with iced lattes. I never realized just how delicious and smooth the coffee there is too. If you haven't, please visit Berolina and support this incredible local business. The service is always nice and speedy. The ambiance is like any local bakery, but more on the quiet side. The cake makes up for it! PARKING: Limited, but free in the shared lot. More free parking on side streets.

Carolyn I.

Yelp
The cake was lovely. BUT, I was picking it up in the alley. Looking for their door, none of the buildings had signage. I parked, called their number, said I was there, and went to what I thought was Berolina. It was Schreiner's deli meat shop. My knock interrupted the man's work, and he was not a happy camper. When I found Berolina, and mentioned the lack of signage, the girl said, "There's a sign on the back of the gate."Indeed there is a sign... but nowhere does that sign or the rear of the building say the name of the shop. For goodness sake! How simple to fix this problem! I'm not the only one frustrated and nwasting time back there.
google avatar

Martha V.

Yelp
I've never been to this bakery, but recently my daughter drove all the way to Glendale to get my FAVORITE cake for my birthday, a Princess cake, which are incredibly difficult to find. It was absolutely delicious! I enjoyed every bite! Thank you, Berolina, give making my birthday so perfect!!
google avatar

Nina B.

Yelp
Big improvement since my last review. I gotta say, I've always raved about they're pastries, how fresh they are & so good but the service was not doing it . I did stop going here for awhile and recently the last few months I did come back and I noticed some of the staff changed and the customer service is much better. So far it's been very pleasant and I'm happy to see warm smiles.
google avatar

Michael G.

Yelp
The loaf of bread are fresh and delicious. I also got cookies and pastries. The prices are good .
google avatar

Tomes G.

Yelp
Nice atmosphere, outside tables and chairs sometimes with umbrella/shade. The baked goods look great, and I enjoyed some, others are totally decent (it would be at my 4-star vs 5-star level). Haven't tried any drinks there. A good spot to meet, or grab a good local loaf of bread.

Maggie G.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for years & we love their princess cakes! We get the princess cakes for every occasion, they're incredibly well made and delicious. We've tried other pastries from this bakery and they're super delicious as well.
google avatar

Kevin B.

Yelp
Love the Chicken Chipotle Pannini and the Princess Cake for dessert. Wow, if you are ever in the Glendale area, you must stop at Berolina Bakery And Pastry Shop.Chipotle Pannini has this nice Latin Twist to it , with the Armenian style cooking which make it interesting to try out. Princess Cake taste real sweet, but not heavy sugar. Our first time here, and the service was nice. Can't wait to come back again.
google avatar

Owen L.

Yelp
The food is average to above average. Service is average. But the portions are pretty good and the price is cheap. I go here when I am low on funds. 4.50 for a huge load of bread, that's trader joe prices. 9 dollar for a sandwich, that's cheaper than McDonald's

Megan C.

Yelp
The baked bread tastes good and I've been buying it for years. For about the last year, most of the time, Berolina bakery bread is filled with holes. Like, half the loaf of bread has holes! You cannot make sandwiches with bread like this. How does a professional bakery sell bread with a bunch of holes in it? Posting because it's happened so many times, and they are still continuing to sell bread with holes in it. UPDATE: Editing because I found the owner's response a little bit strange. First of all, I know what sourdough bread is. This was not sourdough. Second, many artisanal breads are made by hand. And they do not have big holes. It is poor quality work. Bread prepared properly does not have holes. Perhaps the yeast was not mixed properly, or perhaps fermentation went on too long, or maybe it was another issue. Like I said, it's hit or miss with Berolina bread. It tastes good, but hopefully they can improve on their process and make bread like an artisanal, hand-made bread should be made - without half the loaf containing big holes. It did not used to happen before, so they had it figured out back then. Maybe go back to the prior method.
google avatar

Ani O.

Yelp
My friend always buys their cakes so I decided to give it a try and may I say it was amazing! The princess cake was absolutely delicious as well as the cupcakes! The workers greeted me with a smile and service was fast and easy. I highly recommend this place and will be back!

Dana N.

Yelp
My family had been ordering the Princess cake from Federico's bakery for something like 30 years when they closed. It has left a vacancy in our birthday celebrations. We tried Copenhagen, I tried making it...it just wasn't right. Berolina was suggested to us and we tried it today for my daughter's birthday. It was fantastic! We liked it even better than Federico's. Our problem has been solved. My mom also ordered some delicious Olive bread when picking it up. I highly recommend it!
google avatar

Marina K.

Yelp
I'm never disappointed by the quality and freshness of the bread, cakes, and pastries of this Glendale treasure. Best Cranberry Danish and Chocolate Croissant EVER! If you're in the area, definitely make a stop

Bethany J.

Yelp
The cookies are delicious. The rumballs are so good it's hard to eat just one. I was able to pick up my Swedish potato Korv and next time I will order Swedish Limpa bread. You can put in an order for pickup but this was my first time to Berolina Bakery. I will definately come again!
google avatar

Gary A.

Yelp
This popular bakery has the largest selection of breads and pastries....it's hard to decide which ones to try. I had the vegetable quiche and it was excellent. Got a box of assorted pastries to take home and we loved everything. I liked that nothing was overly sweet. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. We will be back to try more of those pastries!

Yelp
Great bakery friendly staff variety of breads I wish they weee open Mondays as well , princess and prince cake is the best
