"Tucked into Montrose’s main drag at Ocean View and Verdugo, Berolina Bakery has operated as a German bakery since 1957 and remains a beloved, old‑world spot run by Anders and Youna Karlsson, who famously won ownership with a coin toss after returning from Europe. I find its German-, Swedish-, and Belgian-inspired treats reliably excellent: dependably rich cardamom buns and croissants, a dozen breads including olive, potato‑dill, and cranberry‑walnut, and the bakery’s famous Princess cake — layers of custard, raspberry jam, and sponge cake under a seamless green marzipan dome — which regularly appears at birthday dinners and church gatherings. Youna highlights the walnut bread and a new blood orange cake as rare updates to a menu that hardly changes, while her favorite is the Fridays-only Belgian waffle, a delicate, crisp, airy raft balanced on the edge of buttery and sweet. All of this can be enjoyed at the breezy cafe tables out front, where the atmosphere often feels distinctly European." - Eater
