The 23 Best Restaurants in Montevideo, Uruguay | Eater
"The sourdough bread boom arrived in Uruguay before COVID-19 but escalated (in tandem with the rest of the world) quickly afterwards. Now you can get a great loaf at a handful of great bakeries around town, but head to Bertha also for fluffy medialunas, brioche cinnamon buns, and mortadella sandwiches. Neither of the owners, Agustina Rodríguez and Virginia Olij, are career chefs, but they began Bertha as a side project and soon had a hit on their hands, eventually leading to a space in Pocitos where diners could eat in. — MB" - Marcela Baruch
The best croissants I've tried in Montevideo! Fluffy, fresh and buttery, just perfect. The bagguette is super crunchy, and the brioche is creamy. Everything tastes and smells really good.
The place itself is small and cozy, so it's nice to eat in as well as take out. I'll definitely continue visiting it!

Best bread I've ever had. Ever. I can't even find anything that compares here in Montreal and it's killing me.
Edit: Came back in November 2024 and tried a tomato focaccia and it was pretty bad. Absolutely zero seasoning when the dough was prepared. Also some vegan menu items were removed in favour of pastries which sucks because nothing is plant based. The baguettes was still very good however. Lowering my rating from 5 stars to 4 stars.
Also cashier didn’t give back all the change during one transaction.

Bertha makes some of the most delicious sourdough baking that I have ever tasted. The decor is simple and down to earth, the service is friendly and without attitude, the coffee is excellent, and I think that the croissants are probably what angels use for pillows!
