The Best Matcha Lattes In San Francisco - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"Matcha latte minimalists should bookmark Best Boy Electric immediately. The coffee shop on the ground floor of the New People building in Japantown doesn’t try anything fancy. The just-whisked matcha and milk with no added sweetener is light, refreshing, and the perfect companion drink for a few hours of laptop clacking at one of the communal tables." - julia chen 1, patrick wong

Best Boy Electric - Review - Japantown - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"If it weren’t for the sandwich board outside with a picture of a bewildered cat, you might just miss this coffee shop on the ground floor of the New People building in Japantown. Inside you’ll find cat-themed merchandise, but don’t get distracted. You’re here for the drinks. There are standard coffee concoctions with some flourishes like Okinawan sugar, but we like to stick to the matcha lattes here. Purists should opt for the classic matcha latte that’s light and refreshing and served with no added sweetener so the green tea flavor is front and center. When you’re ready to branch out, try the black sesame matcha latte. Pair it with a pastry from local bakeries like Loquat and Third Culture. And if you’re lucky, you’ll find a seat at one of the handful of communal tables, typically filled with people camping out on their laptops next to, ironically, the occasional dog." - Patrick Wong

Google
Really yummy hojicha! Super cute space with tote bags and they sell Matcha and other teas! They actually whisk their teas by hand and the staff is super friendly! They have free Wi-Fi and really nice bathrooms and a really great place to work :) love it here and I’m so glad I stumbled upon this place!!

Google
What a cute cafe!! This is a cafe by the wonderful people of Neighbor’s Corner and Dolores Outpost, so you can expect a very nicely curated menu & great food and drinks. I had the espresso which was delicious and also the black sesame latte that was wonderfully nutty and toasty (and not too sweet). We can’t wait to be back!

Google
Best Boy Electric is such a welcome addition to the Japan town scene. To start it is very dog friendly, providing treats and water complimentary! Meatball is always so happy when we stop in here. The folks who work at Best Boy are the most knowledgeable and friendly people, even though it was super busy they were patient with me while I fumbled for my wallet and tried to decide between all their amazing choices! I went with the matcha latte with oat milk. It's hands down my favorite place now to get anything with matcha, but don't sleep on the black sesame and the Okinawan lattes as well, they are superbly made! Without a doubt Meatball and I will be back as regulars!

Google
Meat little cafe with some tasty coffees and a few other options to choose from. I had the pork chashu sandwich and thought it was super tasty and pretty reasonably priced.

Google
Very cute, clean, and simple cafe. The staff are very friendly and the drinks look gorgeous! I do wish the hojicha latte was a little stronger as it tasted too milky. Will be coming back for more!

Google
i came to try their matcha but i last minute decided to try their hojicha latte since they said they sweeten it with okinawa black sugar, and i’ve yet to have it like that. it was good but i think a bit weak with the hojicha flavor.

Google
If anyone asks I’ll say this is the best matcha spot in SF. Order the black sesame matcha it’s a tad salty which I love. The coworking ambience could be cozier and there’s no wifi.

Google
Great cappuccino served in nice ceramic mugs. Easy to find seating and conveniently located across from the Japantown mall. The coffee is fantastic and heard matcha is good too.

Yelp
Overall I've had three great experiences here at Best Boy Electric. I first tried the matcha latte which was the perfect balance of sweetness with just the right amount of oat milk to matcha. The okinawan latte was my second delicious drink I've had here, I prefer it hot but just as good iced. It was hard to not order that again but since it was so hot I decided to have their new strawberry fizz with sea salt. It was honestly one of the most refreshing drinks I've had, kind of felt like I was drinking a fancy strawberry pocari sweat. Definitely going to be hard choosing what to order next time I go!

Yelp
Great coffee and matcha spot. The drinks are super yummy and if you're a matcha fan... they are yummy. The black sesame is one of my go tos anywhere I go and I always add a shot of espresso. They put love into making the drinks here. The atmosphere is open and quiet with music playing softly. It's a very bright and comfortable atmosphere. The staff that was working was very kind and nice. Recommended some drinks and what their favorite was. Nice spot!

Yelp
My friends and I came by Best Boy Electric on a Friday afternoon, where there were plenty of people working and studying at their 15-ish or so seats. It's spacious and allows for a lot of natural sunlight to come into their shop, right next to the heart of Japantown. We tried a few of their drinks. Their hot Okinawa Kokuto Latte was my absolute favorite since it was rich and perfectly balanced with the brown sugar Okinawa taste. I would come out to this area specifically for this drink! The iced Matcha Latte with Oat Milk was refreshing and had a strong matcha taste (I asked for no additional syrup). The iced Black Sesame latte had a strong nut taste, and the iced Matcha Black Sesame Latte was also good, with a stronger black sesame taste in my opinion.

Yelp
Wanted to work at a cafe on a Sunday afternoon so decided to give BBE a try! We came around 11:30 am and it was pretty busy. We wanted to do some work but all the tables were occupied so we ordered and sat at the seats near the window while waiting for some guests to finish and leave. I got an iced black sesame latte and my friend got an iced hojicha latte. The black sesame latte was definitely the better drink of the two! Finally after about 10 minutes, some people left so we relocated to a table. Wifi was quick and easy to connect to. For the actual table seats, there's only 2 chairs that actually have a back so if you're not using those, your back might be tired if you're sitting on the regular stools. Overall a cute spot but definitely would appreciate more seating.

Yelp
A man never used the words like "better" or "great" to show that Best Boy Electric was the cut above the rest of the cafés here in J-town and throughout the Bay Area. Definitely replaced French style high tea classic most people fall in love with like tourist. This place still holds the cinema below and use to run Harujuku clothing store from 2nd to 4th floor. The service looks just as dynamic as the atmosphere itself. Like the Black Bird Bookstore near Ocean Beach, there's coffee/tea and amazing pastries; the bottom part of the selection were from Third Culture Bakery. I have yet to visit Best Boy Electric knowing that there's more than just Japanese matcha drinks and pastries.

Yelp
Great service & friendly staff! I fear their Matcha Latte was just milk. They apparently use 5 grams of matcha for the latte but I didn't really taste much matcha flavor and it just felt like milk. When I stirred the drink, it was a pretty sad light green color. Inside seems like a cute place to work but they don't have much AC so it's hot .

Yelp
Recently saw that this spot opened up and I'm always down to check out a new cafe. I was craving a croissant; got the almond croissant that's from The Midwife & the Baker. I've had it before from another location and it's one of the better almond croissants that I've had. They can warm it up for you. To drink, I tried the Tokyo Fog. It was just ok, the tea wasn't very strong and mostly milky, just slightly sweet, sweetened with Okinawa brown sugar I believe. They have matcha drinks but didn't feel like having one today, I'd come back in the future to try other drinks. There is a good amount of space to sit and do some work. Friendly staff, restrooms are located downstairs.

Yelp
So glad this place opened up here! The building is super cool, and the area is the best. It's great place to do some work or meet up with friends and chat. The black sesame latte is my go to and it's always very good. The pastries are from different local bakeshops. Compared to other cafes, the sizes are a little smaller, but the quality is great imo.

Yelp
I was excited to try this new cafe in Japantown after seeing it on social media but unfortunately the matcha was a bit disappointing. We came by after lunch to grab a sweet treat and I got the iced strawberry matcha while my friend opted for an iced black sesame matcha. While I liked the strawberry syrup which tasted fresh and natural without any artificial flavoring, the matcha itself was grainy and very light. I prefer my matcha strong and smooth so my drink felt pretty diluted. We both asked for less sweet which was good for me (the drink was barely sweet) but my friend thought it could have been sweeter since the matcha is super light. There is a good amount of seating in the lobby of the building but the drinks we tried didn't live up to the hype, especially since there's so many good matcha options in Japantown.

Yelp
New coffee shop in Japantown in the New People building where Crown & Crumpet used to be. I was intrigued by the logo (love cats!) and wanted to check it out. I wanted to try the Okinawa Kokuto latte ($6.50). Comes hot or iced and is supposedly the sweetest drink on their menu. Based on that knowledge, I asked for it to be less sweet. However, I ended up not tasting any of the brown sugar at all. The espresso itself was decent, so I figured it was salvageable. IMO better to be less sweet than too sweet- but a little disappointing that I didn't get any of that flavor profile. My friend ordered an iced strawberry matcha latte and was hopeful it would hit the spot as it's hand-whisked by the workers. However, the drink seemed a bit light in color, and since there's several other specialty matcha shops around, your matcha game better be strong. Unfortunately, it seems like the matcha is a miss here. The light green color was an indication that it was more matcha flavored milk instead of a strong matcha taste. We were also told that that matcha is an unknown brand from a farmer in Japan. I'd like to give them another shot, and hoping the 2nd time around will be better.

Yelp
Delicious latte with brown sugar (couldn't taste the brown sugar as much?? But the coffee was good) from Japan, and adorable merch!! Friendly and open space. Quick service. Love the logo too. Menu had a lot of varied drinks from matcha to coffees. A little pricey I think.

Shivangi K.

Yelp
The shop is aesthetic, but drinks are mediocre at best. I was super hopeful because the baristas are hand whisking all the matcha + hojicha drinks. But the drinks tasted like straight up milk w a dash of flavoring... I wanted to like this so bad. Staff was kind & vibes were cool tho!
google avatar

Hanna T.

Yelp
Got the black sesame matcha latte and matcha americano. Both were okay... The black sesame matcha latte had no matcha taste unfortunately. Very overpowered by the black sesame. Maybe it's just me but the other things I want to "chew" in my drink are toppings I choose to be in it. I understand the black sesames in my drink were for aesthetics and maybe taste but it felt like a nuisance having to chew it while drinking. I misunderstood what the matcha americano was and definitely my fault. I thought it was a matcha with a shot of espresso...but a matcha made in an americano way. Still good just not my drink of choice. Staff was super friendly and the drinks came out quick.

Yelp
Tbh I'm a bit of a matcha snob. I know my matcha, and as much as I wanted to love Best Boy Electric's version, it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. The flavor lacked that rich, smooth depth I look for, so I have a feeling matcha might not be their specialty. That said, the space itself is absolutely adorable, bright, inviting, and perfect for hanging out. I'll definitely be coming back to try their coffee instead, since that might be where they really shine.

Yelp
Best Boy Electric is a new cafe in japantown across from the peace plaza. They have some small tables and large windows. Their menu has some Asian inspired drinks like hojicha and Okinawa brown sugar lattes! My drink was solid and the service was friendly. Definitely a great addition to japantown!

Yelp
The new little cafe (located in the crown and crumpet old location) is so cute. A perfect quick caffeinated pick-me-up with doggy treats and a water bowl for you "best boy". I got the brown sugar latte and it was a perfect mix of sweetness and coffee. Everyone was so warm and welcoming, I wish there was wifi and more tables because this would be my go-to cafe.
google avatar

Yelp
Cute new spot in Japantown! Waiting for them to get more tables, as it'd be awesome to work with wifi. Okinawa Kokuto Latte was yummy :)
google avatar

Sherry F.

Yelp
Just opened 1 week ago this cute little cafe definitely worth a visit! The milk froth can use some improvement tho. Interested to see where this new coffee shop can do with more table, hopefully can be a frequent third space to hangout :)
google avatar

Michelle P.

Yelp
Cute atmosphere! I would say the matcha isn't good. We got the strawberry matcha and the sesame matcha as we heard it tastes good. However, it tastes like water. The strawberry matcha wasn't good and the strawberry jam didn't suite the drink. Same problem with the sesame matcha where it just tastes like water! Overall not worth my $14.

Yelp
Wow really great coffee. And not crowded. Cool vibe. Easy nice place to have a cappuccino or matcha. Also love the ceramic mug it comes in! Will be back.

Alice W.

Yelp
This is quickly becoming my favorite cafe. The servers are so incredibly nice, I'm so blown away. The barista offered to split out Tokyo fog into two cups and gosh they even poured the milk foam art twice! That was so sweet and really made our date. The shop has a cute cat magazine that was so fun to flip through! The drink itself was top tier. So fluffy and just a touch sweet. They do Asian levels of sweetness--nothing is too sweet! Just how I like it. I wanna go here every week to support this shop!

Cyleena M.

Yelp
this place was really cute and customer service was good which is the only reason I gave it a 2 star. I ordered a strawberry matcha latte with oat milk and it was not good at all. It was really watery and whatever they use for the strawberry was tart and had a medicinal taste to it. The drink also started curdling. I took 2 sips and ended up throwing it away. Overall I cannot recommend this place for their matcha.
google avatar

Tommy Y.

Yelp
I liked the ambiance- it reminds me of a hybrid between the UC Law SPRO (glass interior with red accents) and the Fremont apartments Andytown (bottom floor shared space). I ordered the 10oz. Okinawa Kokuto latte (hot, at the recommendation of the owner). It was solid but I wish I had a bit stronger of a smoky/roasted sugar flavor, as it tasted like a regular latte when I didn't get sips where the sugar was thoroughly mixed. Service was a bit slow on July 4th morning, but understandable since they only have 1 worker pulling espresso shots and 1 whisking matcha from what I could tell.
google avatar

Rafaello S.

Yelp
Small but nice cafe. Bathroom was underrated! Great location not crowded compared to the rest of Japantown

Conner B.

Yelp
TikTok hyped it up a little too much. Ordered an iced latte and iced matcha latte with a sub for oat milk. Latte was a very acidic roast and matcha couldn't be tasted it was poorly colored and tasted like straight oat milk with some astringency. Great service and ambience tho!

Ethan C.

Yelp
Fun new coffeeshop in Japantown in an airy bright lobby. I can see this becoming a great place to meet up with friends a half-step away from the busy mall. Could use a touch more seating and maybe some shade to prevent the floor-to-ceiling windows from overheating everyone. I got an espresso tonic, which was more of an espresso soda, and it was solid. I look forward to trying their other coffee & matcha drinks as they continue growing into the space!

Remus I.

Yelp
Place is nice and they can make you a good cup of espresso drink! Pastry option is amazing and love how they chill the pastry so they feel cold to the touch this is very nice when its a hot day! I think this place is worth the stop if you are in Japantown.
google avatar

Steve W.

Yelp
fantastic coffee shop located right in the heart of japantown. got a latte and it was delicious

Maria A.

Yelp
The service and aesthetic of the place is good. The matcha is actually really bad. It is hardly any matcha and tastes like you are drinking only milk. I was very excited to come here but upset with the size, quality, and price. For 8$ you can get better quality matcha in Japantown.

Leah D.

Yelp
Loved this cute new cafe. I had the cold strawberry matcha and it was delicious! Very inviting setup; nice big windows so you can view the action on the street. JapanTown is very exciting but the mall is very crowded so this is a nice place to avoid the crowds. There is a great little shop upstairs selling Japanese goods and cute clothing for cosplay and amine fans. My friends were also happy with their coffee drinks. Service was friendly and fast. Will definitely return to try the kokuto latte!
