Ask the Experts: What to Drink for National Wine Day

"Pinot Meunier doesn’t often make it out of Champagne, and when it does, it doesn’t often produce anything but sparkling wines. However, there are a couple of great examples of Pinot Meunier from far-flung places making some compelling arguments for giving this grape a little more love and attention. The first great example I encountered when I was reviewing Australia was at Best’s Winery in the Grampians of Victoria. Here, there are plantings of this variety that go right back to 1867, from a nursery block of original James Busby clones." - The MICHELIN Guide

This weekend we went to Best's wines for the first time. We were delighted that there was a little celler tour that we could take and I loved seeing all of the old barrels and seeing all the old oak and the gorgeous old bottles that used to carry such special wine. It was wonderful to learn about the rich heritage of the area through the careful items that are placed along the tour that we really enjoyed poking around in. Best's is an incredibly special place for those of us who absolutely adore wine and the history of wine in this country. Best's were pioneers and that is something that all visitors are able to appreciate when they see and learn about the Nursery vineyard that was planted so very long ago and that established Best's wines as the powerhouse that they have been for such a long time, showcasing Australian wines to the rest of the world. We had the great fortune to be served and looked after by Carly when we had our tasting. I have worked in the industry for a very long time and I absolutely love going to a winery where the people who work there are as interested as you in talking about the wine, it's creation and its production and that's exactly who Carly was. It was so great to have such a friendly, bubbly person to talk to and to really enjoy the experience at Best's. We both would like to really thank you Carly for how special you helped make the afternoon. We had both been looking forward to the visit but coming away from there we felt like we had made some new friends and we know that we've got a place that we can't wait to come back to visit. Thank you all and all the very best for the future!

This place has a special magic. You feel very cozy as soon as you arrive — the atmosphere is amazing. The women waitstaff were wonderful: very patient during the tasting and always explaining each wine. It was a really great experience.

My partner and I visited Best's winery during the long weekend. We were greeted by the most welcoming staff who gave us options of tours, tastes and food! The wines matched the staff beautifully. The winery was very busy and we didn't have a booking but were swiftly accommodated. The wine we sampled was the best wine I've had throughout all Victoria. Thank you for having us💜

We were served by Suellen during our visit to Best's, and she made the experience wonderful. Knowledgeable, friendly and clearly passionate about the winery. A wonderful experience - can't recommend a tasting with Suellen highly enough!

Yelp
Lovely wines and amazing cellar We popped in for a quick wine tasting at this picturesque winery and ended up spending almost 2 hours there. We took the self-guided cellar tour which took us through a network of some super interesting underground cellars. The wines are really good quality so we had a really enjoyable wine tasting.

Yelp
Lovely cellar door nestled next to the oldest planting of vines in Victoria and close to the centre of Great Western. An extensive range of beautifully crafted wines to taste with the Riesling and the Shiraz LSV being my personal favorites. No restaurant as such but you can assemble your own lunch by choosing items from the selection of hams, cheese and condiments that sit waiting in their well stocked pantry. Local is the theme here, with much of the food on offer being raised or grown in the Great Western and Grampians regions. The staff were very knowledgeable about the wines and exuded country kindness. Drop by Bests for lunch next time you need a break between Melbourne and Adelaide. PS Don't forget to visit the underground cellars while you are there!

Yelp
Only wine can fix that feeling you get when you walk 3.6km up a mountain in the wind and rain to what's supposed to be a 360 degree view of the Grampians only to see white fog and nothing else. So it was with great relief that we came upon Best's Winery only 30 minutes from the national park. We started with the self-guided cellar tour which took us through their modern packing area, past giant wine barrels and old winemaking equipment, over creaky floorboards and down into their underground cellar, replete with a creepy dungeon and dusty bottles from the 80s and earlier. But we weren't there for the history, we're there for the booze! Best's has a dozen odd varieties of grapes in their vineyard, including some which aren't found anywhere else in the world! Story is that Mr Best just planted a little of everything when he set the place up to see which would grow best, and they've all lasted to rest of time to be available for tasting today...in a blend of all of them! Beyond me why you would throw so many unique varietals together when you could create small batches of interesting new wines! Thankfully some of their other wines like the Pino Noir and Shiraz are worth adding to the cellar but I feel it's a bit of a waste to lose new tastes in a mixture of many.

Yelp
The cellar door itself is amazing - it feels historic as soon as you walk in the door, and the self-guided tour through the subterranean darkened spider-webbed cellar corridors is a must. Staff have always been friendly and knowledgeable every time we pop in. I really really want to like the wines more than I do, but that's just a personal thing of course. They're nice, but often the price point is a few notches above where my palate would consider it. That said, it's a must stop along one of Victoria's most underrated wine regions.

Yelp
Fantastic family owned winery full of great wines and friendly cheer in a heritage environment. Our group of four had an excellent tasting here this afternoon. We were taken on a terrific tasting journey by the highly knowledgable and gorgeous Nicole who provided a superbly comprehensive overview of the range. Bests have some fantastic iconic wines. We also had a great self guided tour of the cellars. Bests is one of the key wineries of Australia. It's a must visit for anyone with an interest in wine.

Yelp
A fabulous winery. Take a tour of their underground cellars, have a look through vineyards planted in 1866 and taste some real icons of Australian wine.
