The Best Dishes Eater San Francisco’s Editors Ate in September | Eater SF

"One of San Francisco’s most stalwart baristas has crafted a scintillating, bouqueting drink highlighting Northern California caffeine history in a Nob Hill space shared with Bar Bibi. The One Ton is a riff on the one and one, taken to the barista championship circuit by Santa Cruz’s Verve Coffee, but rather than a tiny portion of milk this single-origin espresso arrives with a miniature kaffe tonic — a nod to Saint Frank, where Joshua Kaplowitz cut his teeth. The presentation allows for focus on the espresso with the option of bubbles, a wise bifurcation that provides a comprehensive palate expression for the coffee itself; get this drink while it’s still $7, because the mustachioed proprietor has debuted a new San Francisco coffee contender as strong as any he’s nodding toward." - Paolo Bicchieri

Better Half Coffee - Review - Nob Hill - San Francisco - The Infatuation

"During the day, Bar Bibi is Better Half Coffee, a large cafe built for hours-long hangouts over lattes and pastries. The menu has standards like matcha and espresso, plus house syrup and a cold brew spiked with vermouth—but you should also stick around for the pastries by Bellaria Desserts. The warm corn biscuits with butter, crisp-edged thai butter cake, and thick lemon poppyseed slices are leagues above your average coffee shop pastry case. photo credit: Better Half Coffee photo credit: Julia Chen Pause Unmute" - Julia Chen

Great Coffee, Amazing Food and Outstanding Service! This was our first coffee stop in SF during this trip and we are so happy to land in such great spot to get coffee and start our café and cocktail bar quest. The atmosphere is cozy and staff is friendly and very hospitable. Highly recommend it if you are in the area.

Love this place . It is popup store inside a wine bar. It is coffee shop in the morning and wine bar in the evening. They just opened about 4 months. I am not sure if this is their permanent place. We were looking for coffee shop near North Beach and found it. The interior is very nice with small section where they take order and prepare the coffee. There are some pastries to choose from and they also have something from kitchen. The owner is very friendly and based on our conversation, he has been in coffee world for quite sometimes. We order matcha, cortado and latte. They have milk options if you are lactose intolerance. We also order Confit Avocado. The order was ready quickly which surprise me. The coffee and matcha were tasty. The highlight is the Confit Avocado. It is so yummy and different than regular avocado toast which you get from many coffee shop. They infuse the avocado with oil. I never had this before. it is at next level. The price is reasonable and good this is it is pet friendly place.

We ordered an iced latte with Ispahan syrup, an iced matcha latte, two donuts (raspberry and custard), and a Thai butter cake. The Ispahan syrup adds a unique flavor to the latte, which I really enjoyed. The donuts taste homemade and are not overly sweet—very different from typical American donuts, and I love that. The texture of the Thai butter cake reminds me a bit of cornbread: light yet satisfying. On top of that, the café is dog-friendly, which makes it an even more enjoyable place to visit.

Google
An absolute delight, Better Half Coffee is deceptively named (it's much, more more than coffee) and the signage can be confusing (it shares space with the prominently signaged Bar Bibi, and I'm glad that we weren't being guided by our phones because Google would have told us the bar part was closed). Drawn in by the snug neighborhood vibes, we enjoyed an impromptu brunch that was probably the best of our lives. Ordering three items with our coffee was about right for two average people. Avocado confit (not toast, the menu reads!) was a bread-dipper's dream; hen-of-the-woods elevated a perfectly poached egg; and the granola parfait was just, well, parfait -- hard to describe how well fuyus + satsumas played off the yogurt and cocoa nibs. Every nibble hit the mark. What we loved especially was the care that the chef-owner showed in the work, as well as his mellow, effortless artistry that feels so much like S.F. at its best.

The place has a great vibe the. Friendly staff. The breakfast I had picked was delicious. The cortardo was good, but I've perhaps had better. There was clearly a high passion for coffee here and their business.

Have you ever walked into a new place and instantly know that you're gonna like it? That's how felt about Better Half Coffee. From the space, to the music, to the menu, to the people, I knew that this is going to be my go-to cafe. Coffee is excellent here. So far l've had an iced latte and a mocha. I'm not a coffee expert, but I enjoy the smooth flavors here. And I don't find it acidic, which I like. As for food, l've tried the Thai butter cake and avocado confit. The cake is delicious! It has the flavors of a Thai tea with the decadence of butter. The crumb was soft and the jam added the right amount of sweetness. It paired well with my iced latte as it had no sugar. I recently had the avocado confit and wow! It has punchy flavors from the mustard seeds and mustard vinaigrette. The poppy seeds provided a crunchy texture next to the silkiness of the avocado. And I'm not a fan of pickled onions, but it added another layer of acidity that I enjoyed. It came with a crusty ciabatta for dipping. And it was emphasized that it's not avocado toast, which I found amusing. And it's true anyway lol. Service is excellent! I've never been to a casual cafe where they provide details on what you're about to eat. I have the short term memory of Dory, so I appreciate that. Plus, I love learning how something is crafted. I will try to make a pilgrimage here once a week on days when I work remotely. They just have really good vibes all around, and that's something I like to surround myself.

This place has amazing coffee and I loved how simple the coffee choices were! The Americano was smooth and tasteful and the seasonal latte was delicious. Thank you for the best coffee experience for our first time in San Francisco!

Yelp
Surprisingly cool experience. A block away from Polk street, which makes it nice, away from the business. Possibly the best tasting iced americano I have ever had. I would definitely go back when I am in the area to try other coffee drinks. I would imagine all their coffee drinks would be great. And the Thai butter cake was pretty enjoyable as well. And super friendly people running the shop.

Yelp
New find in the neighborhood and love that it's so close! The coffee in the morning with wine bar at night is a great combination. The people behind the bar are friendly and efficient with the orders. The coffee itself is delicious - love the cappuccino and my friends love the matcha. Their pastries are a great variety - tried the Gruyère onion tartlet and the breakfast patty melt which was small but delicious. It's a great vibe and lots of neighborhood regulars are often there with computers.

Yelp
Better half coffee/Bar bibi is a nice new addition to the Polk neighborhood. While not on one of the usual foot traffic streets it still warrants a stop by no matter the time of day. During the day they serve coffee and pastries and then transition to a wine bar as the day progresses. It's a cozy place with a handful of seating areas inside and they usually have a few tables set up outside for when the weather is nice. The food options are worth trying. Had their breakfast sandwich and it was quite delicious, the sauce, sausage and bread went together quite nicely. They also have extensive wine options and the staff are very nice in trying to help you find one that you'd like. Will definitely be adding it to my rotation of places to go to in the neighborhood.

Yelp
Got recommendations from friend that made me would like to try this place and was impressive. Joshua was amazing, explaining the food and drinks in great detail and great service mind. I ordered an Iced latte and it was smooth, just the way I like it. The pastries were also very delicious. They weren't too sweet and had a smooth texture that complemented the butter cream and apricot jam, which was very delicious. Highly recommended and definitely be back.

Yelp
Best coffee in the neighborhood. Cute, dog friendly space. Yum small bites to eat, beignets are delish.

Yelp
This place is so inviting! Fairly new, and I'd highly recommend it. The barista was really kind, showed me the WiFi right away before me asking. They have plenty of seating, not too crowded and chairs outside. They also have great food options!

Yelp
Was excited to spot a new coffee shop on my morning walk. Had to try a latte to go but would recommend sitting down and savoring the experience with the many pastry offerings. The server was very friendly and the inside and outside areas were inviting. Next time I will plan to stay for the full experience.
