Detroit’s Best Breakfast Sandwiches | Eater Detroit

"Bev’s is bagel heaven. Celebrated chef Max Sussman brought his love for bagels to Core City in May, using only organic flour to make his tangy, crunchy, crispy, tender sourdough Os. At Bev’s, there are no misses; Max only plays the hits. While there’s plenty of lox, wild caught fish, and creative cream cheese schmears to enjoy, Bev’s has a list of four stellar breakfast bagel sandwiches that you’ll want to regularly take advantage of. The green chile and chorizo sandwich is both sharp and meaty, and the Over My Egg Body (nice) is gooey and rich with eggs, mayo, and Cooper sharp cheddar cheese. Online orders are accepted, but there’s also a handful of seats at tables and at a diner-style counter." - Danny Palumbo

Chef Max Sussman’s Bev’s Bagels Opens in Detroit’s Core City | Eater Detroit

"Named for the owner’s grandmother and opened after a pandemic pivot that began in the owner’s Ann Arbor home, this Core City bagel deli serves breakfast and lunch with a focus on housemade, organic sourdough bagels (11 styles ranging from za’atar to spicy furikake and a salt stick) and a planned rotating bagel-of-the-month. Offerings include sandwiches, an array of schmears (vegan cream cheese available), inventive spreads like chile crisp and green goddess, a pizza bialy topped with pepperoni cups, and seafood-forward items that use wild-caught fish—highlighted by a wild smoked sockeye selection called “Salmons in the Steam.” Coffee is drip from Ann Arbor’s Roos Roast, and the compact dining room was designed to evoke classic Detroit diners with a curved counter, 10 stools, and an open kitchen. After opening in early May with reduced hours, the shop now welcomes customers seven days a week, 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m." - Ashok Selvam

Chef Max Sussman, One of Metro Detroit’s Most Famous Food Exports, Is Opening Bev’s Bagels in Core City | Eater Detroit

"A chef-founded bagel shop rooted in the owner’s Jewish family heritage, this venture grew from a popular pop-up into a brick-and-mortar in Detroit’s Core City. It focuses on hand-rolled, organic sourdough bagels and artfully stacked sandwiches, using sourdough starter and organic flour to achieve a chewy interior, crisp exterior, and rich, yeasty aroma. The process is traditional and meticulous—dough is hand-shaped into rings, refrigerated overnight to proof, boiled, then finished in the oven. Offerings include single bagels or by the baker’s dozen, sandwiches built with ingredients like wild-caught smoked salmon, and schmears such as a green goddess cream cheese; playful seasonal specials (for example, a corned beef sandwich served on a green bagel) hint at a creative, rotating menu. The operation—taking over a longtime local bagel spot—plans to provide catering and expand into wholesale, with a late-spring opening planned." - Serena Maria Daniels

We have had Bev’s Bagels 3 separate times and the service is slow, the price extremely high ($50 for 3 bagel sandwiches), and the product inconsistent. This last time we ordered BYO bagels with sausage, egg, and cheese that was clearly cut with a knife dripping in some sort of spicy mayo. Not what you want when you don’t order it, especially for kiddos. It was all over the bagel and was visible throughout. We have had a good experience too, but the quality should be spot on if the price is going to be so steep.

I was underwhelmed by Bev’s. I was disappointed they don’t carry onion bagels, and felt the sesame bagel I got was just ok. The green goddess cream cheese looked great, but the taste was missing something for me. The lox did taste extremely fresh. I wouldn’t be opposed to going back and trying something different, but the prices are quite high- $12 for the bagel pictured. To get my bagel fix, I will probably stick to New York Bagel or Eastside Bagel.

Delicious bagels and unique tasty sandwiches! I like that they make sourdough bagels too! Maybe the best bagels I’ve had in Michigan

Not halal friendly, accidentally was given pork! Avoid ordering anything from the grill if you have dietary restrictions. Got a bagel with egg and cream cheese and there were bacon pieces all in the eggs and it had an overall smoky flavor. They seem to cook everything on the same grill, could really use better cross contamination efforts. They were kind enough to refund and were apologetic, but the wait time was also close to an hour for two bagels when we were told 15 minutes at the counter so it was overall a disappointing experience.

Unique spot! Got the salmon bagel—made with wild-caught fish. Super fresh. Highly recommend.

Not a great experience. The lady that took our order was great. After that the it was the opposite. The team seemed to have no hustle as they were making the orders and their system was crazy. We ended up waiting over 25 minutes for our order. They were making bagels of people who came in way after us there was no order to what they were doing. The bagels themselves were also extremely underwhelming. They were soggy and the eggs were extremely overcooked on the sandwich. Please find a new system that works well for your guests.

Chaotic, Slow, and Missing the Basics While the bagel sandwich I eventually received was decent, it absolutely was not worth the frustrating experience. I went to place my order only to discover they don't even have onion bagels, a baffling omission for a dedicated bagel shop. After finally sorting out my order, the real wait began—almost 30 minutes after we had already paid for our food. It was easy to see why it took so long, as the entire process behind the counter is a disorganized mess and it seems like no one knows what's going on. A decent bagel sandwich simply cannot make up for a chaotic system, an unacceptable wait time, and missing the absolute basics. We won't be back.

I live in the neighborhood so it particularly stinks to have to write this review, but paying customers should know before paying for and consuming the food served here. I had high hopes since it was a cute spot nearby. I came in for breakfast recently and decided on the Gambler’s bagel. First, the customer service at the register, sheesh 😬…pretty non-existent. I sat at the empty bar and waited for my food. The girl making the bagels who saw me settle in with my laptop to hopefully get some work done while I ate somehow seemed shocked I was dining in. It was bizarre, and I had to spell out that I was dining in. Once I received the paper the bagel was wrapped in, it was essentially soaked in sauce. I told myself that maybe it’ll still be good despite the sloppy presentation, do I took a bite. I was sorely disappointed. It was like biting into a bagel with who knows what in between (could have been paper, cardboard, or any sort of mass) DRENCHED in what tasted like pure vinegar. That’s literally all I tasted. It was disgusting. I honestly had no idea what I was consuming. Now, being that I started my morning late, and this was supposed to be my jumpstart to my day, and I didn’t have the time to go spend $14 somewhere else, I decided to just eat it because a. I was starving and had no extra time I could waste finding an alternative breakfast b. I felt bad for the people working there since it was just disorganized with one guy coming from the back saying, “we’re out of bagels” and the cashier guy disappearing for long periods while people came in waiting to put in an order and just left because he didn’t reappear until 10 min later, and the girl making orders by herself and c. I kept wanting to believe that we have a good breakfast place to go to near home. I deeply regretted eating that horrible bagel of mystery grossness because half hour to an hour after eating, I spent the rest of my day on the toilet. There had to be unsanitary practices taking place for me to have diarrhea from that for the rest of the day. It was just awful. I was so hopeful too. It’s a cute place (terrible parking situation, but I digress) and could have so much potential…but besides the cute colors, it’s a mess. As I sat there eating vinegar-sopped bagel with mystery something in between, I watched the girl just make a regular bagel with cream cheese…as I began to think, “maybe I should have just gotten a bagel with cream cheese,” I saw her put the stingiest bit of cream cheese on, and couldn’t believe a bagel place was doing such a thing. Why would someone pay $5+ for a bagel with the thinnest smear of cream cheese on it. I don’t think anyone actually manages or does quality control, because if someone did, they’d see in every area- they’ve got a lot of work to do. It’s a shame.

Yelp
Stellar! This spot is a must in Detroit. The pink turkey club is one of the best things on the menu. However, I absolutely LOVED the one that had fresh motz, sprouts, and pimento cream cheese. Haven't seen it on the menu the last two times I checked...Pretty please bring it back, I will order weekly and pay double : )

Yelp
So I've loved Bev's since the Ann Arbor pop up days. However, I was pretty disappointed with my lunch experience. I ordered the Reuben (Wagyu pastrami, sauerkraut, cooper sharp, spicy mayo) on an everything pumpernickel bagel. The flavors were good - I mean hard to go wrong with cheese, spicy mayo (talk about flavor!!) but the wagyu pastrami was like 2 pieces and SUPER tough. and it was $17?!! Salt in my wound. The bagel itself was great! My friend, who has had Bev's AM sandwiches multiple times, was also pretty "meh" about her Pink Turkey Club bagel sando (Roasted turkey, bacon, tomato, spicy mayo.). +1 for creative naming though. TL;DR - stick to the bagels here or breakfast sandwiches. It's now pretty out of the way for me, but if the Bev's Bagels team would consider making an egg bagel. I'd be here every weekend! Service was really friendly and quick. We sat out in the courtyard area.

Yelp
Came here to pick up some bagels for me and a friend. There weren't too many people in line or waiting so I was pretty sure this wouldn't take long and it really didn't. I ordered a Baja Bagel on Everything. It was pretty good. I will say, the bagel itself was pretty tough. I dont know if it was just the one i got or that day but i wanted a fluffy bagel and it just didn't hit. The toppings were good. The outdoor seating was also very nice considering there is very little room inside.

Yelp
I stopped by to grab a quick lunch and was recommended the Zaatar bagel that I paired with chili crisp spread. The flavor profile was unique and accurate,l throughly enjoyed my bagel. Service was quick and I was out in under 5 minutes. I would definitely recommend! Parking is limited so I'd recommend coming on a weekday.

Yelp
I love a real bagel: hand rolled and boiled. Even better a Lox Sandwich: the fatty salmon, salty and briney capers, and the sharpness of onion atop a bagel is one my favorite sandwich creations (This sandwich lacked onion, but had tomato). Overall, Yummy sando. Zatar is a bagel flavor that seems quite novel here. Have to order next time. Poppyseed bagels are my favorite, but were out. This, went with my second favorite the everything bagel. This was was packed with flavor and seeds. Here's hoping the curse of the DIB is over.

Yelp
Small place with counter service that's quick and efficient. Bagels are delicious with some unique flavors like za'tar and spicy kurikake. I had the egg sandwich while everyone else had the Sammie sandwiches. Pink turkey club is not pink but was flavored perfectly with spicy mayo. White fish spread was full of fresh radishes and cucumbers along with the spread. Highly recommend the place if you like dense chewy bagels.

Yelp
Greatest addition to Detroit. Everything is above average. Don't sleep on this one. A+

Yelp
Service is very slow and did not seem to be worth the wait or money spent in the establishment, my bagel was very hard and the food just wasn't what I expected

Yelp
The service was top notch. They have a courteous and attentive staff. The bagels are great, especially the everything and salt bagels. It's a cool little shop in the emerging Core City neighborhood. I have found my new bagel shop, the antithesis of James Oliver.
