"Bible Club founder Ryk Maverick once described this Sellwood neighborhood bar as “a pre-Prohibition-era museum that you can drink in,” and that remains true: The walls, shelves, and corners of the bar are stocked with conversation-starting antiques and tchotchkes, ideal for first dates. Many of the drinks here fit the theme, like the bar’s strong Penicillin. However, many of the others are exciting and distinct to the bar, like the Sweet Sayonaras, with gin, passionfruit shrub, and sake." - Rebecca Roland

"The dark, speakeasy vibes at this Sellwood cocktail bar make it a sultry spot for dates, where people drink Sazeracs and Penicillins under pressed metal ceilings. The walls are adorned with countless conversation starters, in the form of paintings and faded artifacts. In the warmer months out on the backyard patio, live music plays on weekends; its wooden tables, summery cocktails, and outdoor bar make it a more casual option for nervous new couples." - Katrina Yentch, Thom Hilton, Brooke Jackson-Glidden

"Bible Club’s Prohibition-era schtick may intoxicate some and irritate others, but those in the latter category can find relief in knowing the late-season-Portlandia bowties and waxed mustache vibe is largely limited to the interior — the patio plays it fairly straight, with smooth-edged modern picnic tables and a dedicated, albeit somewhat more limited, bar outside. And don’t let the Boardwalk Empire decor deceive you, these bartenders are elite and make some of Portland’s best original and classic cocktails. The patio offers covered and uncovered sections and features regular DJ sets and live music — check Bible Club’s Instagram for upcoming performers." - Nathan Williams, Eater Staff

Where to Find Portland’s Standout Bar Patios

"This speakeasy bar, decked out in vintage furniture and memorabilia, serves a rotating list of classic, old school cocktails as well as inspired new concoctions made with top-shelf ingredients. One mainstay on the menu is the Penicillin, a rich scotch sour made with Ardbeg Ten, ginger syrup, and lemon, with a Laphroaig mist over it. It can always be found over ice, but in the summer it’s served outside as a slushy, and in the winter it can be ordered steaming hot in a mug. In any case, it’s equal parts smoky, sweet, and tart." - Alex Frane

"With a pre-prohibition schtick and vintage tchotchkes throughout the space, Bible Club is equal parts museum and cocktail bar indoors, with a summery all-season back patio. Everything about Bible Club tells a story, from the antique crystal glassware to the master class menu of early 20th century cocktails. The backyard patio is a completely different vibe, better for folks seeking a more energetic atmosphere." - Asia Alvarez, Brooke Jackson-Glidden
