13 Best Restaurants in Gold Country’s Nevada City and Grass Valley | Eater SF

"In 2024, Grass Valley got itself a brand-new pizza joint, co-owned by industry veterans Thaddeus Raczkowski and Weston Updegraff. The cozy spot features exposed brick walls and a deli counter stocked with curious jars and cans to take home, but the main attraction is (of course) the pies, featuring a chewy crust and inventive flavor combos. Might you be in the mood for Return of the Mac, with ground beef, American cheese, shredduce, and secret sauce? Or perhaps a slightly more classic Rita, with pepperoni, Aleppo pepper, and Parmesan? Either way, you can’t go wrong." - Flora Tsapovsky

Delicious pizza! You can really tell that they put a lot of love into their dough and use high-quality flour, rather than the typical American flour used by many pizza chains. We ordered the Phoenix and Bee Thousand pizzas, both of which were amazing, but I particularly favored the sweet spice of the Bee Thousand. I love that they make traditional Italian white pizzas with olive oil as a base instead of using ranch like other pizza places do. When a pizza is this good, it feels almost insulting to pair it with ranch!

Google
The pizzas were spot on and the salads were flavorful and dressed perfectly. The line out the door says more than my review. Thank you for the great meal and evening.

Google
The veggie dishes were amazing. Do not miss out on these, pizza was good, thin and crispy crust.

Kyle Cox

Google
Probably some of the best pizza I’ve ever had, everything was amazing. Honestly, would give it a Michelin star if I could. The corn ribs and ice cream were to die for. Really cozy and chill atmosphere and everyone working there seems cool.

Donald Owen (Don)

Google
Best corn on the cob I have ever had in my life. Everything on the menu is top notch; the salads are refreshing and unique, the pizza and sauces are tasty; the mint ice cream tastes of real mint. Also great selection of local craft brews. Put this on your list!

What an amazing pizza! We’re so excited that this new pizza joint has opened up in downtown Grass Valley. As soon as you walk in, staff is there to greet you into a gorgeous restaurant with a large bar seating area, retro vibes, and colorful decor that is so welcoming. I walked in with a two-party table on a Friday night, and was seated immediately. But soon after we sat, all available spots, including at the bar, were filled up. Would definitely recommend a reservation for a Friday or Saturday night. They had a nice selection of wines and beers, and the menu is short and sweet. We had wine, meatballs, broccolini, and a Bee Thousand pizza. For dessert we had a lemon sorbet. The pizza was AMAZING! Excellent crust, great flavors, delicious toppings. We absolutely love the broccolini as well, would definitely order that again. The meatballs were really really flavorful and came with a portion of five meatballs. Dessert was tasty, they have big selection of sherbet and sorbet but there were only a couple of options left by the time we ordered dessert.

Google
Great addition to Grass Valley! Had the Joe pizza..love the parm! Plenty of wine to choose from - not just beer! Great ice cream! They are located next to Enriques lounge.. They don't have any visible signage yet except on the door so don't pass up this hidden slice of paradise! They open at 4pm ( see my pics for hours). UPSCALE yet casual.

Google
Mind blowing flavors, excellent service. Feels fancy like you’re in a city …yet casual and comfortable. Everything we ate was perfection. So thankful for a new amazing place to enjoy a meal and connect with friends!

Yelp
I posted a crunchy pizza challenge on the Nextdoor app in my community and someone mentioned Bicycle Thief. Not quite the name I would expect for a pizza place, but Yelp reviews and photos were good. We decided to drive up from Roseville to check it out. Once we arrived on Main St. we realized we've definitely been in the area. We visit both Grass Valley and Nevada City often. We visited on a Sunday just after lunchtime. Walking in you get to see the pizza's almost immediately. The lunch crowd was leaving so we got seated right away. The staff very friendly and we got to visually see the actual slices of pizza. The entire vibe in there was good--especially the music coming from the turntables. Pure nostalgia and super cool! The pizza was simply amazing! It took a little longer than expected but we were not in a rush. The wait was worth it. We ordered a second slice. There's much more to this place and apparently the dinner menu is bigger. We did have the hazelnut ice cream. Creamy delicious goodness. We will be returning in two weeks. If you're looking for something different, go check it out. You'll really enjoy it.

Yelp
If I could give this place 10 stars, I would! We walked in without a clue of how busy it would be! They said the wait was an hour since we didn't have a reservation. A lot of people would've went elsewhere, but it was a sign to me based on pictures & the food we saw as we signed in, that it would be worth the wait. We walked around the shopping area while we waited and returned with about 20mins left of our quoted wait time. We decided to wait inside, which was a pretty tight area. But little did we know, the owner would approach us offering a drink to us which we did order. Before we really reviewed the menu, we had an idea of what to order based on the food we saw around the restaurant! Once we were seated, it was a long family style table and we sat at the end chairs. We ordered WAY too much food, but thank goodness we had leftovers! Food we ordered: #1 Meatballs - these literally melted in your mouth! They were drenched with sauce & I still wanted more of the sauce! It was sooo tasty! #2 bread plate with burrata and EVOO - this was simply delicious! The bread had a perfect crust but was chewy on the inside, the burrata was creamy. What a treat! #3 JMV pizza - this one has no cheese, it really gives you the full flavor of the red sauce, sooo bomb to me! # 4 Rita pizza - good balance of traditional pepperoni pizza with a kick! The crust was firm and chewy! We ordered a 2nd Rita with no sauce for our kids. #5 blueberry waffle ice cream - just get it if they have it! It had chunks of waffles inside, blueberry throughout, I couldn't get enough of it! The food was truly delicious! But the staff really made this experience memorable! They were extra friendly, apologized for the wait and thanked us for waiting (they clearly did not need to do either!), the waitress was accommodating, friendly & attentive! The atmosphere was super cool! If we are ever in the area, it'll be a must stop for us! Shoot, we may even plan a trip around our stop just because it was so amazing!

Yelp
I know it's a pizza place but I just adore the selection of vegetables on the menu at Bicycle Thief. We started our dinner with the Papavero and Ceasar salads - crispy lettuce, perfectly dressed and generously sized - more than enough to share between the 6 of us. Cheese bread and house pickles were next on the lineup, both of which satisfied the kids and adults in our group. We wrapped up with the Rita and a potato pizza. The Rita had a kick, without being painfully spicy or taking away from the flavor of the ingredients. I'm embarrassed to admit that although it was a memorable pizza that I would order 1000 times over, I can't recall what was on the potato pizza! Although I'm only home every couple of months to visit family, this is our new go to spot. Super sweet wait staff, fun vibe and a menu that makes me want to try one of everything.

Yelp
Popped in at around 4pm and was delighted by the retro cool ambiance, friendly staff and absolutely fire pizza. The drinks they have on tap are a wide selection and on the drier side not so sweet which I loved. The whole restaurant screams laid back and super hip, from the funky lighting accents to the records and posters that line the wall, hats off to whoever designed this warm, approachable yet creative and unique interior. We got the pizza with pepperoni and it was delicious- perfectly charred thin crust, lots of topping, passed the fold test (did not sag). Also got the pickle platter appetizer with tangy yummy veggies all pickled it was refreshing and delish! Loved eating dinner at bicycle thief!

Yelp
Seriously good pizza! Great service. 8 of us were super happy with food. Caesar salad was amazing!!!
google avatar

Curtis S.

Yelp
Salads are large and sharable. Pizzas are also very good. and service was quick and attentive. 2nd time and looking forward to future visits.
google avatar

Paul G.

Yelp
Good pizza but crappy attitudes from wait staff for the 2nd time. Also forgot to bring the cheese bread I ordered and small wine pour. Poor attention to detail from our waitress

Yelp
We came here on a Saturday night for dinner and it was amazing! The place was busy and lively with ample seating so we were seated shortly in a cute booth. The service was a bit slow and it took some time for a waitress to come and take our order, but the servers were very friendly nonetheless! We ordered: - Cheese Bread - This was delicious and the flavors was so good, with the cheese super stretchy and warm. The marinara sauce on the side was a good combination with the bread. - Ruby Pizza with Mushrooms Add-on (which is a White Pie) - The pizza was pretty good! I really liked the flavors and adding the mushroom on top really enhanced the taste. The portion sizes at this place are super generous and for two, we definitely had leftovers to take back. Overall, we had a great time and we will definitely be coming back here for dinner if we're back in Grass Valley!

Yelp
This place is exactly what you want if you're looking for quality pizza. They certainly outshine anything you will find currently in Sacramento. 10/10 for service, good quality and ambience!

Yelp
Try the Bee Thousand. The perfectly light and crisp crust supported an array of delectable toppings. The honey added a nice, sweet note to a tangy sauce. I'm not ashamed to admit I ate 75% of the pie myself on the first sitting. When I walked in, I was promptly seated at the bar and made order came out quickly. The decor seems new and I enjoyed the vibe of the place. It seemed plenty of regulars would pop in and have a drink while waiting for their order to be ready. I really appreciated that they had a fun selection of nonalcoholic soda (like Fentimans) for those of us who don't drink or in the middle of longer drives. Wonderful place.
google avatar

Stephanie A.

Yelp
A gem in Grass Valley! Caesar salad was excellent and a super generous portion for two people- could easily feed four as a starter. We ordered a 1/2 Texas Tommy 1/2 Bee Thousand pizza and loved every bite. Definitely worth the hype!

Yelp
10/10. Came in for dinner with a friend who recommended this restaurant. The two of us who had never been here before did not leave disappointed. We started with their special, which was a caprese that had the freshest peaches, burrata and heirloom tomatoes. We then had broccolini and meatballs before we ordered our pizza. Every dish had a little extra flavor to it. There was chili oil or spices that really elevated every dish. We cleaned the entire plate for a dish before we would let them take them away. The sauces were just too good to not eat all of it. I did forget to snap a pic of the pizza but we ate until we were stuffed. Somehow we did have room for the ice cream. We had the Oreo and also tried the banana Nutella flavor. Both very different, both fantastic. I loved the vibe of the restaurant with the decor and the staff was friendly and attentive. I'd come back anytime!

Yelp
Yeah it is the best artisan, almost neopolitan style pizza in the county. Sorry, 3fork, your oven is very nice, but the attention to detail isn't quite there. Table service is good, even when they are extremely busy. Speaking of which: make reservations (online, no phone) if you plan to go on a weekend evening, etc, especially. This is not a place to buy a slice and run. This is a place to have a drink or two, and enjoy a meal. What's the downside? Well, they don't have a full bar. Not sure if that is part of the plan or not, but at least they have a good selection of beer and wine and similar. So what's the downside? It's really really loud. Especially in the back room when full. They have got four acoustic panels on the ceiling. They need fourteen such panels to begin to tame it.... And someone should run the Sonos app to EQ their speakers especially if they continue to have them play loudly. Don't bring children here (it's loud enough to be dangerous to their ears) and think twice before being your parents if they use hearing aids.

Yelp
I have been waiting for this place to open! They are located on East Main Street (next to Enriques Lounge) in downdown Grass Valley. Although they don't open until 4pm it was worth the wait! We had the Joe pizza and loved the parm on it! Love the wine and beer selection! I like that the menu has both the white and red sauce separate, so its easier to choose from. It has a classy and warm atmosphere! Please note that there is no big signage yet..so don't miss passing this by! Great addition to downtown Grass Valley..its upscale!

Yelp
We have dined in and enjoyed take out several times now! Everything we try is simply amazing. One of our favorite pizzas is the Ruby! It is so delicious with the white sauce. You must try Bicycle Thief for their excellent friendly service, fresh ingredients, and convenient order on line take out, as well. We highly recommend!

Yelp
Amazing food! Amazing service! The Caesar salad is to die for! Beer selection is incredible!! We love the Bicycle Thief and highly recommend it!

Yelp
Best pizza ever with creative combinations of tasty offerings. The crust reminds me of pizza I had in Italy. Would come here when I'm in Nevada city.

Yelp
Huge fans of the family that opened this sweet spot! We had been meaning to try and finally did, but were a little nervous being loyal Frank's fans... but WOW!! Turns out their business is as amazing as the humans they are!! Such great quality food, some of the best crust I've ever tried, impeccable sauce, lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, just ALL THE THINGS! The time and energy poured into this lovely spot hit the mark and then some! Thrilled to have a new favorite in the 'hood!! Great work, R fam!!! Xo

Yelp
My friend and I came here on Friday night, maybe 30 minutes before closing, after we arrived late into town with very few places still open, and we were starving. We were accommodated and served without any feeling of being an inconvenience or hurried, which was amazing after our exhausting, stormy road trip! (SIDE NOTE FOR THE RESTAURANT OWNER): We tried to call ahead to ask a few questions and discovered there's no phone number. If I could knock off 1/4 star for that, I would, because we both have (annoying to us) food restrictions and prefer to call ahead to ask if they can accommodate them. It's better for everyone so we don't waste our time, and we also respect the staff's time! We feel for the servers who have to sit through our detailed questions and complex instructions about what we can and can't eat, and in which forms, etc. We know many people are just picky or following trendy diets, and waitstaff often get a lot of grief from unreasonable, rude, entitled people. We just want to be efficient and respectful, so everyone can relax, and we can show our appreciation when a restaurant is able to accommodate our needs! As far as the food goes, it was divine, and I would give it more than 5 stars! The server was very patient in answering our questions and coming up with alternatives or fixes. I have issues with cow dairy, and my friend has issues with garlic and onions. They created a half/half pizza for us to share, with each side made for our dietary needs, that has to be HANDS DOWN one of the most delicious, simple pizzas I have ever had! The thin crust was perfect, and I'm pretty sure I could have eaten the sauce straight with a spoon. We also ordered the beet salad, and the flavor of the beets was so savory and rich that we were probably making inappropriate noises. To top it off, the music in the background was perfection, and the relaxed atmosphere couldn't have been better.

Yelp
We've been meaning to visit Bicycle Thief for awhile and I am so glad we finally did! It's a super cute spot with amazing food and friendly staff. Their food is a little on the pricier side, but the quality is definitely worth it. The pizza was perfectly cooked (not floppy!). Make sure you save room for their house made ice cream!
google avatar

Michelle B.

Yelp
Only one 1 star review on this shop and if you look at what that person gave a 5 to its pretty easy to see their opinion cannot be trusted. Bicycle Thief is easily the best pizza in GV, possibly Nevada County but hard to choose between here and the joint. I love that the menu is minimal - do a few things and do those things well. The Bee Thousand is IMO the best, lots of flavor with the honey and chili. Really everything is good, including the salads and I am looking forward to trying their unique desserts. 5/5. No notes.

Yelp
Best pizza within 150 miles of 95949 Great owners, small town vibe, and amazing food!!!!

Jim M.

Yelp
Food is amazing! Ambiance is awesome! Service is first rate! Now I do not have to travel to San Francisco for a great pizza!
google avatar

Rachel R.

Yelp
I'd read a review about it being too loud and they were not exaggerating. I walked in, sat down, and immediately got up and walked to my car for my ear plugs. They've had a vegan pizza on the menu every time I've been in. Crispy crust like Blue Line. Great veggie sides. If you can handle the ambience, I highly recommend it.

Juanita ..

Yelp
Not sure why the high rating. The cheesy bread was far better then the pizza. For reason they will sit you with people you don't know and then you have to ask for everything that should be on the table. Was disappointed

Yelp
Our third visit to Bicycle Thief before a show at the Center. The service (Kent) was exceptional. His recommendations were spot on. Loved the special of the night (Brussel sprout pizza . . . who woulda guessed!) and the pistachio ice cream. We made a reservation and were seated immediately. All around a great experience.
google avatar

Katherine R.

Yelp
One of our favorite places in Grass Valley, because of their quality ingredients, upscale environment, and value. We are pizza snobs and everything here has been great. Even their recent ice cream addition was creamy, flavorful and unique. Attentive staff make the experience enjoyable! Those sensitive to noise should sit in the front of the restaurant, as the back section be noisy due to the hard wall reflections.
google avatar

Cody G.

Yelp
I think this place is deserving of some serious attention and notoriety--best pizza, ice cream, and appetizers in town. Don't skip the baked cauliflower and pistachio/blueberry waffle ice cream!
google avatar

Terri U.

Yelp
10 out of 10! This is my third time at Bicycle Thief and it just keeps getting better. The vibe is so great--excellent music and lots of happy people. The food sets it apart from other pizza places. Tonight's special appetizer was a burrata with peaches and prosciutto. A delightful balance of sweet and salty, paired well with a lovely crisp white wine. The pizza was delicious with a perfect crust and two different toppings, one with caramelized onions and pancetta, the other with potatoes and herbs. All of the staff were friendly and professional. Their house made ice cream is always a fabulous finish. I'll be back!
google avatar

Olivia K.

Yelp
I used to live in New York City and there was a boutique-y Sicilian style pizza place one block from my apartment. BICYCLE THIEF is the best pizza I've had besides that. Love the name; Love the service; Love the vibe. Perfect spot for a date or to go with friends. Absolutely delicious! No notes.

Beth R.

Yelp
This place is awesome. The Texas Tommy pizza was one of the best pizzas I've had. The roasted carrots were delicious. Ate the carrots before we remembered to take a picture! We will definitely be back.
google avatar

Dylan D.

Yelp
Hands down, the best pizza in a 50 mile radius. I always order The Joe w/ mushrooms and am never disappointed.
google avatar

Merrill K.

Yelp
Had dinner there last night with my daughter and grandson. We had 2 appetizers and the pizza of the day. Everything was delicious The back room was a bit warm and they did not have a booster seat or Children's menu.
google avatar

Sandy T.

Yelp
The atmosphere is cool and the food was really good and fresh. We ordered a pizza that had chili oil on it and our friends had a pizza special that had broccolini on it, both were delicious. They serve beer and wine with a small area to sit up to a bar. We arrived at 5:30 and by 6:30 it was packed.
google avatar

Moriah M.

Yelp
This place is amazing and Nevada County needed it so much! The atmosphere is wonderful, it easily accommodates large groups, and we haven't had a bad meal. My family loves it! I'm gluten free I love the gf crust they use and the meatballs are wonderful. The sides are elevated and tasty and the honest ice cream is wonderful. The staff seems friendly and happy to be there. It's awesome to go to a place where the vibes are high and the quality matches.
google avatar

Greg B.

Yelp
This is a wonderful pizza joint in Grass Valley, and the pizza is to die for. Great selection of toppings and the crust is good to the last bite. We had the smoked pancetta pizza with white sauce. Last time, we had the sausage with their red sauce. Check out the peach and tomatoe salad! All good. Great service and wonderful ambiance. Excellent selection of beer and wine.

R W.

Yelp
Excellent, all around. Definitely my favorite place for pizza and a good Caesar in this area. I did take off a star because it is so annoying that they do not have an email address or a phone number to call to ask a simple question. It seems a little ridiculous to not have easy communication available. We had made a reservation online, and showed up for it, only to find out that they didn't get the reservation. I had an email and a screenshot of it. We also saw a party of 10, who had also made an online reservation, whose reservation also didn't record. Note to owners: Being able to call to confirm a reservation would be excellent!! Technology fails too often : /

Renee L.

Yelp
Loved loved everything about it! Thank you for bringing to our community my favorite best place to eat! Your menu is perfect and food is so yummy delicious. The service staff were so helpful, cordial and taking the time to check on us throughout our meal! And looking around it's a very happy place ... ambiance we found was great.
google avatar

Rain K.

Yelp
We are beyond fortunate to have this gem of a dining experience in Grass Valley. I've stopped in 4-5 times now and have enjoyed the experience every time. Solid service. They serve one of my favorite Italian beers, Manabrea, in the bottle at a very affordable price. Appetizers are ALL very good. The Bee Thousand pizza is so good that it keeps me from exploring their other fare since I KNOW it's going to be amazing. Best crust on the west coast! There, I said it. If you're lucky, you'll get seated in the miller high life nook. You'll understand if and when you do...

Yelp
Advertising online as being open until 10pm but went through the process of ordering online at 9:20pm just to be told after creating an order 3 minutes later that online orders aren't available. Went to look for a phone number but there isn't one. I had heard mixed reviews but some of the menu items I heard good things about had me eager to try them. Ended up with a distaste from misleading hours being advertised and being kicked out of online ordering over 30 minutes before they supposedly close. The only phone number found online was (555) 555-5555. Maybe just communicate your hours for food, beverage, or take-out separately.
google avatar

Jennifer S.

Yelp
Food is amazing and always ready on time. I first thought the price was high but the pizzas are large and ddeliscious.

Jeff K.

Yelp
Mixed review... First, Bicycle Thief features the most imaginative veggie dishes in the county. E.g., Nantes carrots in a hummus sauce, smoked cabbage. Pizza is very good, but a couple of other places in Nevada County offer better, and more exotic pizzas. Service is friendly and thorough. The physical ambience is high-class, with fine wood slab tables and plenty of wall art. But it is NOISY. The conversational din and recorded music were so intrusive as to inhibit conversation. We asked our accommodating server to please turn the music down. She did. Twice. But still, most of what we said to each other was, "What?" Despite the food's outstanding quality, the noise interfered with our evening so much that we probably won't return.

Yelp
Unbelievable that this gem is here in GV! This is our go to for pizza. The place is great, the service is attentive and professional, and the food is amazing. Bicycle thief is firing on all cylinders, thank you, and see you soon!

Yelp
Delicious pizza and drinks in a nice modern setting. Try the ice cream they make in house too. Perfect for a date night dinner or grabbing a pizza with friends.

Yelp
The pizza is super tasty and the service was fast and accommodating/friendly. Good addition to GV.

Yelp
Thank you to the staff and great food! The pizza and drinks were fantastic and really enjoyed the homemade ice cream! I'll be back!

Yelp
Thad and Wes made pizza for us in Merced. Favorites on this menu are Bee Thousand and Brooklyn. Hopefully he has a special of the Bandito pizza with dates. These guys are amazing. You are very lucky to have this in Grass Valley. I need to head up there soon. We miss you guys in Merced!

Yelp
Delicious pizza! They were a bit understaffed on a Sunday, but they were hustling and did their best.

Yelp
A cool restaurant with a name inspired by a cool movie, Bicycle Thief really stole my heart (sorry, I had to do it). I had the pleasure of eating too much delicious pizza last month including Delfina and Outta Sight (which is getting tons of hype) in SF, but the pizza that I just can't get out of my mind is the Hale Kale from Bicycle Thief. It doesn't hurt that the restaurant's ambience is also fun and inviting, and the portions are very generous. I normally think of Neapolitan style pizzas as being a bit smaller, but I'm not complaining. And I love that their menu is divided into white and red pies like Delfina. While I wish they offered a slightly more exciting veggie red pie option, I can't wait to try the Brooklyn and Nantes Carrots next time.
