San Diego’s Best Sports Bars and Restaurants | Eater San Diego

"This pub gets its namesake and format inspiration from European beer gardens, but what it serves is all American: find chicken wings, barbecue baby back ribs, short rib nachos, Baja-style fish tacos, and a dealer’s choice selection of sandwiches and burgers (the Cubano, with its shredded pork, sliced ham, melted Swiss, pickles, yellow mustard, and aioli on a pressed hoagie roll, stands out). Multiple television screens and a bright, convivial atmosphere seal the deal." - Eater Staff

I came here with a large group early one Sunday morning. It was mostly empty so it was easy for a large group to sit down. They had a good mimosa special and the chicken and biscuits I had were really good. All the food portion sizes were rather large.

Google
It’s rare to find a waitress/waiter that you notice as being outstanding. Alicia was attentive, helpful and mindful of all of her customers. We ordered brisket tacos that were so delicious and filling that we ended up taking the crack steak sandwich to go. Excellent beer selection too. We sat outside to enjoy the beautiful day.

Google
Fine for beers (but no other drinks) and watching a game, and service is fine too, but food is awful, tables aren’t clean, silverware is dirty, just a great way to ruin your day if you were thinking you might get some decent bar food. Was better several years ago, but will never eat here again. And my mixed drink was awful, I had one sip and didn’t touch it after that. And trust me, I’m not a fussy person. Very disappointing they can’t do simple dishes remotely well.

Google
Great place to go on a sunny afternoon. We enjoyed the outdoor seating along South 101. The food was great. I had the fish and chips. And my wife have the tri-tip sandwich. Portions are ample and the prices are slightly high but that is to be expected.

Google
Great spot to grab a bite in downtown Encinitas! The atmosphere is iconic to what a Southern California beach town should be. Seating both inside and outside along the sidewalk and street. The food is amazing, highly recommend the Tri tip sandwich! The staff is super friendly and quick with service. Also a great place to grab drinks anytime day or night.

Google
Pretty greasy bar food. Ordered a blackened mahi sandwich and it was covered in heavy handed butter. If you don't mind greasy food, this is a nice place to hang out with friends with a beer. But if you want good food, perhaps shop around a bit.

Google
Had a margarita and all 3 happy hour food offerings. Cauliflower, pretzels, and short rib nachos. The food was good and a good value for the location and atmosphere. Friendly service and a good margarita too. Would definitely go back.

Hi Hunter

Google
Honestly expected more German food but it’s alright. The lamb shawarma was delicious. Truffle fries might be the best I’ve had around San Diego. Cobb salad was good. Decent beer selection. Other drinks offered as well. More than just bar food. Indoor & outdoor seating. Forgot to take pictures of all the food. Prices were good too. Good quality. Good flavor. Our server, Austin, answered our questions, was kind & very attentive during a busy evening. Thank you!

Yelp
If you're heading to Biergarden in Encinitas, do yourself a favor and hope Ashley is working--she's hands down one of the best parts of the place! From the moment we sat down, Ashley made us feel completely at home. She's warm, attentive, and genuinely fun to talk to. She knows the menu like the back of her hand and gave us awesome recommendations (the beer and food were chef's kiss). But what really stood out was how natural and effortless she made the whole experience--never rushed, always on point, and with a great sense of humor to top it off. The vibe at Biergarden is already relaxed and welcoming, but Ashley takes it to the next level. You can tell she actually cares about the people she's serving. We left full, happy, and already planning our next visit--mostly just to hang out with her again! Cheers to Ashley and to Biergarden for having such an amazing team member.

Yelp
The name of the restaurant is kind of German but the food is about as German as the taco shop across the street. Really, the place is about as 'Murican as you can get. It's basically glorified pub grub. It's also family friendly and dog friendly. The loaded poato bites appetizer is very generous and was very good. It's basically potato wedges with cheese, sour cream, and bacon. What's not to like? The Southern Fried Chicken Sandwich was ridiculous. I can unhinge my snake jaws with the best of them but not for this thing. It contains a ton of fried chicken stacked to the sky, with pickles, onions, lettuce, and tomato between buns. Unfortunately, the chicken was fried far too long, was very dry, and the batter was not good. The oil may have been old and it was definitely over-fried. That chicken died in vain. On the other hand, the Cardiff Crack Steak Sandwich was excellent. The meat was tender and the bread was very nice (the menu called it a hoagie but it was unlike any hoagie I have ever seen). Whatever. It's a very good sandwich. The entrees come with a ton of very nicely-seasoned thick fries. Just for fun, I tried the Hearty Bloody Mary which comes with a ton of "fixins" (bacon, celery, cheese, pepperoncini, pickled onion, and a mini Slim Jim. It also comes with a beer chaser. The drink itself was fine. Our server was outstanding. He was friendly, refilled our water constantly, and gave good recommendations. The food portions were generous but the cooking was uneven. Overall, it's a safe choice unless you're looking for a real German beer garden. Prost!

Yelp
Did not disappoint! Good vibes, (sit outside if you can) & amazing food. We loved the BBQ burger (get the chipotle mayo) & steak sandwich was phenomenal. Legendary service from JD too, will be back to try the pork nachos & fish tacos!

Yelp
I remember my first time coming here- my partner and I wanted somewhere with quality ingredients and a calming atmosphere. This place was *it*! We've been back a couple of times in the past couple of years, and every time it has hit the spot. We always prefer to sit outside- Encinitas has lovely weather year round, plus the restaurant has heaters! Never waited longer than 5 minutes for a table. Service is always friendly and quick. Prices are reasonable. Cocktails are yummy & well balanced! The Cardiff Crack Fries (I think that's what they're called) are insane. Same with the Tennessee Hot Chicken Sandwich & the brussel sprouts. Definitely get them! Can't wait to be back.

Sarah V.

Yelp
Had a philly with a salad and it was really good, tasty and fresh. Service was great they are so nice and quick to take orders. The ambiance is fun, loud music and so busy! The tree inside is pretty for pics!

Yelp
Met up with a friend here for the first time for some drinks, tasty beer on tap! Ended up having their blackened Mahi sandwich w/ a side salad, super delicious as well! Bartender was pretty attentive. Love the atmosphere & fun wall decor! Would definitely be back to try some more.
google avatar

Laura W.

Yelp
The food here is incredible and the short rib nachos or my other favorite !!! Fish tacos are amazing and the Cardiff crack is a must
google avatar

Ariana M.

Yelp
Service was great on a Saturday. The food was delicious as well. I want to eat those Cardiff crack fries everyday if I could!
google avatar

Caitlin W.

Yelp
Food is always great and service is always on point! I got their loaded potatoes and my friend got their poke bowl
google avatar

Yelp
Always love this place, good vibes and good food. Got the burger last time and it did not disappoint. Servers are always friendly and attentive.

Yelp
We came here for happy hour for my birthday dinner just before La Paloma. The service was fantastic and we got everything quickly! I will say the quality seems to have gone down slightly in recent years. The mac n cheese was thick and goopy and not warm. The cauliflower and brussels are always a hit and so are the drinks. I would stick to apps and drinks here!

Emma N.

Yelp
They're the best! The menu has a variety of different options to choose from. Some of my favorites are their new BBQ special, the Cardiff crack sandwich and the Buffalo cauliflower. Great place to grab a drink and a bite to eat. There's plenty of seating. I've always had friendly service eating there.

Yelp
My fiancé and I recently visited your restaurant and were really looking forward to our meal. She's currently pregnant and ordered the tri-tip sandwich specifically requesting the meat well done and no aioli. When the food came out, it had aioli on it, and when we politely mentioned this to our server, she responded twice by saying, "You didn't say that, but okay," in a dismissive and rude tone. It wasn't just the mix-up with the food -- mistakes happen -- but the attitude and lack of basic courtesy were really disappointing. She made us feel uncomfortable and like we were being a burden for simply requesting the food be prepared a certain way. To make matters worse, her facial expression communicated that she didn't see it as her problem, and there was no effort to resolve the situation or involve a manager. We ended up leaving because the experience was completely soured by how we were treated. We didn't feel heard or respected, and that's not how guests should feel in any dining environment -- especially one we had looked forward to trying. Very disappointed in how the situation was handled.
google avatar

Anthony F.

Yelp
Great environment and a great selection of drinks. It's pet friendly so that's a plus. Beware of the excessive padre filth lol. Over all I recommend this place
google avatar

Leniel S.

Yelp
The service was quick and Alyssa (server) was fantastic! We sat outside and she was really attentive and helpful when it came to putting up the umbrellas for shade. The smoking gun drink was a favorite and if you add bacon to the Buffalo Cauliflower For a Saturday football day, it was easy to get seats. I would definitely go back.
google avatar

Robert M.

Yelp
Miguel is an incredible server!! The breakfast/brunch here is unbelievable! The bloody Mary's are out of control! I highly recommend Biergarden!

L O.

Yelp
We've been coming here for years but recently this place has gone WAY downhill. Multiple times now, they've added extra items onto our bill, especially when sitting at the bar. The food is fine, the service is honestly hit or miss, and usually they are playing the music way too loud. Bummer. Great location but the shotty service and constantly being overcharged kills it.
google avatar

Yelp
Haven't been here in a while but hubs wanted a good cheeseburger so we came here. Always have a great beer selection, cocktails and seating in or outdoors. It was a little early, 11 am so no lunch crowds yet. Great service, menu variety from various appetizers (Buffalo cauliflower, wings, ahi poke, spinach dip, etc), upscale burgers from fig, salmon, fish tacos, ribs, salads and more. I had the fish n chips, cod was buried in an over-battered excessively greasy coating, had to dig to find the fish....didn't like. Stick to the grilled fish tacos. Hubs happy with his burger. Courteous and attentive servers and service, nice ambience and energy. They have seasonal menu items and a happy hour.

Yelp
My friend and I had a great late lunch experience at this fun restaurant on Monday. Jessica was our waitress, and I have never been served more quickly. For example, I asked her for recommendations for light beers. She listed three that she thought I would like and offered me a taste of each one. My friend ordered his beer at the same time. Within a minute from her leaving the table, the three tastes and his full beer arrived. We could not believe how quick that was. When she followed up with me and asked me which one I liked, that one arrived within one minute also. Our food arrived very quickly and the orders were correct. I did chat with Luis, the Manager, and let him know how impressed I was with the speed of service. They really are using the toast system to its full extent. Both Jessica and Luis were very professional, casual fun, and we could tell they both enjoyed their jobs. Keep up the good work.
google avatar

Rick M.

Yelp
Met a client here for lunch. I'd been before but it had been years. I liked the atmosphere....I ordered the fig burger and salad...good burger...nice salad too. Food was good and service was good as well. They offer indoor and outdoor seating...always nice having lunch on the Coast Highway!! Love Encinitas!!
google avatar

Ruth S.

Yelp
Good vibe for the afternoon. Nice beer selection (if you like beer) but still has lovely cocktails. Certainly keep in mind though that it is in fact a "Biergarten" so beer selection outnumbers crafted cocktails on the menu. Full bar though and bartenders can craft up whatever you desire. Didn't eat but the food smelled and looked delightful. They have a nice happy hour. Great music. Prost.

Yelp
We went on a Sunday for brunch. Great choice! The food and service is awesome! We had Bloody Mary's that were delicious. I had Southern Fried Chicken and Biscuits and my wonderful wife chose Baja Fish Tacos. Both dishes were excellent. If you happen to be in Encinitas give this place a try. You won't be disappointed!
google avatar

Anola S.

Yelp
Everything is always great here. From the Bloody Mary's to the French fries to (this time) the Blacked Mahi Sandwich. We've been coming here for years and the food is always top notch. Service is spectacular as well. Mahi sandwich was fresh and they don't skimp on the amount of protein! (Or size of the dishes for that matter). I also got a Michelada (unpictured). Ive tried the bloody Mary's, Beir pretzels, Ahi tower, fish tacos, Cubano, short rib dip, and waffle fries and truffle fries. (THANK U FOR OFFERING WAFFLE FRIES) Great place to sit outside or at the bar and watch the game. Cocktails are ~okay~ and prices are slightly above my pay grade but otherwise A+!!
google avatar

Kyle K.

Yelp
It's rare these days to find a restaurant that has service with humans who care about what they're doing this is one of those places the Baja fish tacos The full rack of ribs, and the Poké bowl are definitely must tries. If you come here for drinks. The very first thing I can recommend is the lavender lemonade, I don't know the names of everyone here, but I'll list off who I know Amber, Lena, Liberty, Miguel, Miguel, Emma, Sydney, Jessica, Alyssa, Alicia, Karalyn and Luis, and everyone else thank you all for your support for the past six months.

Yelp
This is a nice gastropub right on Hwy 101 in downtown Encinitas. They have a large indoor dining area as well as a nice roomy outdoor patio section. We arrived around 7pm on a Thursday night and we got a table outside with no problem. Our server was the sweetest and friendliest. The restaurant offers 23 tap beers on their menu as well as a very large selection of cocktails, burgers, salads, main entrees, and sandwiches. Our friends loved their burger and mahi sandwich. We got the Chinese Chicken salad and it was ok...the greens were refrigerator cold and the grilled chicken was not warm nor moist. But it was not bad..the truffle fries were thick and crunchy with just the right amount of seasonings. A great relaxing place to eat in downtown Encinitas.
google avatar

Megan E.

Yelp
Great little casual spot in encinitas! Brussle sprouts and cauliflower were delicious. Brussels were nice and crispy and the cauliflower was just the right amount of spicy. The vibes are very low key and great to grab drinks with friends, a good first date spot or to grab beers with co-workers! Will be back.

Allison B.

Yelp
Really quality dinner here on a Saturday night! I loved my grilled cheese (bruschetta OTS!) with tomato soup, and we also had the BBQ burger with mac and cheese. Great service, and felt warmed by the heaters outside--which we appreciated.
google avatar

Dan W.

Yelp
Went into this location and sat outside. The service was ok. The bloody Mary's were really tasty. The sweet potato fries are cooked just right and come with a variety of sauces. The only issue is the hidden surcharges. This is never told you prior to sitting down or on the menu which to me is very disingenuous of the organization and deserves of 1 star for not being up front about a surcharge. Plus California has outlawed this kind of disingenuous practice. Be upfront about pricing. Not hiding a charge in the bill.
google avatar

Lisa L.

Yelp
The special Chorizo mussels were outstanding enough for a meal for two. The Shortrib sandwich with dipping sauce and truffle fries another great choice with lots of meat and tasty crispy fries. Will most definitely come back again highly recommend for the great food and atmosphere

Yelp
Came here last weekend to grab an early dinner. We've been here in the past and remembered it was just okay but thought to give them another shot. SERVICE - This was subpar. Our waitress was not present. She was super slow and seemed to disappear. The tables around us had their waiters coming and check in etc. We waited for awhile for her to come bring the check as well. It was just dragging. FOOD Short Rib Nachos - This had great flavor. Loved everything about the taste. However, it was like soup? The chips were drowning in the sauce. Not a bad problem to have. Just ask for extra chips. Cesar Salad - It is hard to mess up a Cesar so this was solid. Brussels - Not very "crispy" and the flavor was a little more sour. Overall, we would come back for the nachos with extra chips on the side.
google avatar

Kyla P.

Yelp
I went for a surf and was starving after, so of course, I had to stop at Bier Garden on my way home. I typically sit at the bar by myself and the bartenders are always really friendly! I have my go-to's, but this day I wanted to try something different. I ordered the Spinach Artichoke Dip and Ashley made a great suggestion to swap the chips for Pita Chips....soooo good this way! I wasnt in the mood for alcohol, so Ashley made a Lavender Lemonade and this hit the spot! Always look forward to stop in when I'm in the area and have time. Thanks to the staff for being so friendly and welcoming every time I come in!
google avatar

Abigail M.

Yelp
A lot of options with yummy food!! Had GF options as well on a lot of appetizers, salads and entree items. Outdoor and Indoor seating with a good local enci vibe! I would definitely recommend if you're looking for good drinks & american food:)
google avatar

Ben R.

Yelp
Casual place in Encinitas, nice ambiance for a local watering hole. I recommend making a reservation as the wait can be long. I was not impressed by the hostess, we arrived with our 3 year old and there was no offer of a highchair. Our waitress was on the spot, and very attentive. The cocktails were decent, the nachos were great, and the crack tritrip sandwich was delicious.
google avatar

Evelyn M.

Yelp
Great atmosphere!! Packed - wait only about 20ish minutes in a Sunday afternoon. The tacos are HUGE... I couldn't finish both of them. The dip had big pieces of artichoke so surprisingly good! There is a parking garage behind that had lots of spaces!!
google avatar

Sheila C.

Yelp
We stopped by for a drink during the Encinitas Street Fair. They have a cool menu of different kinds of drinks and beer. The proportions are good and the drinks were very tasty. The service was incredibly friendly and prompt. I would definitely come back and would love to try the food next time as well.
google avatar

Yelp
(7 months ago) Checked this place with my wife, and I loved my food. She was expressing her choice with me and saying it wasn't what she was expecting. Little did we know, the manager was 5 feet away (incognito style, thought he was a customer). The manager immediately came to us, took her plate back and recommended a different plate for her and she enjoyed!!! She loved it! Aside from that! He took the plate off the bill. GREAT MANAGER! - will return! Great ambience too
google avatar

Carolina C.

Yelp
Got 2 drinks both of them in a dirty glasses with lipstick on it, disgusting, so disappointed with the higiene in this place! They didn't care about it go somewhere else if you want your drink in a clean sanitized glass!!!
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Came here before the holiday last week which probably led to the restaurant being busier than normal. Although it was busy, we were able to have a seat at the bar no problem. The bartender was great about checking in with us on what we'd like to order since we were getting sidetracked with other conversations. We decided to share everything and ordered the nachos, Cobb salad and pretzel bites. Everything came out in stages which was perfect. I only ended up getting a photo of the nachos but the portion was huge. Definitely a shareable plate with family or friends! The pretzel bites came with mustard and cheese. They were warm and super tasty. The Cobb salad was also a great portion. We couldn't finish it all but so glad we stopped by!
google avatar

Melissa B.

Yelp
A large menu with lots of classic American food options. Right in the heart of Encinitas with plenty of indoor and outdoor seating. I tried the beet and goat cheese salad and added fish, and it was good but a little too many craisins in my opinion. Easy spot to come with a big group and good service.
google avatar

Charlize V.

Yelp
Seated right away, food was good. The prices are just a little high, but our server was very sweet. Wish their brunch was daily as I came on a Monday and thought that specific menu looked tastier than their regular menu!
google avatar

Sean D.

Yelp
Overpriced touristy restaurant on 101 in the beachside community of Encinitas...fish and chips were overly breaded with a minimal amount of cod, the fries were hand cut and had a nice flavor but certainly not worth the 22 dollar price tag...the tri tip sandwich was just "okay", taste was average and the sauce was not very good...the side salad with balsamic was the best thing on the plate...the draft beers are extremely overpriced but they do have a decent selection if you're willing to pay 9+ a pint...the service was just okay, not great but not terrible...the ambiance on the inside is average, baseball games on the tv with overly loud volume for this place as it's not a sports bar....in hindsight we probably should have sat out front on the makeshift patio, I would say next time but there won't be a next time....PASS
google avatar

Gabriela Q.

Yelp
Great service, friendly staff, food was amazing. They have a good drink/beer menu as well. We enjoyed our first time here and will definitely be going back. I was a bit thrown off at the 3% surcharge that they add to your bill but I guess it's getting more common at restaurants due to increase in wages/work demand or something along those lines. Ambiance was good, we sat outside near the main entrance and they had a real good setup with multiple chairs and tables. Thanks for a good lunch date Bier Garden!

Yelp
RANDOM LATE NIGHT SIPS AND EATS (3 stars) Not just beer! Food and full stocked bar also. After an "eventful" time in Leucadia, the night cap ended here for some "thank you eats and drinks". I personally, needed a beverage. Encinitas had more things open on a weekday evening and this place stood out from the rest. BRUSSELS SPROUTS ($15) - citrus vinaigrette, fresh goat cheese, balsamic glaze, and candid pecans. Let's say I've had better brussels sprouts and didn't really enjoy this. I don't like goat cheese so that taste was overpowering and it was too balsamic-y and vinaigrette-y. MINT CONDITION ($11) - Cruzen white rum, watermelon purée, mint, lime, soda. This drink was sweet yet refreshing. I was tempted to order another but realize the next day is a working day lol. HIGHLY RECOMMEND I could see myself coming back. Lots of different things on the menu to try. Until the next review...

Yelp
Had such a blast enjoying Encinitas on a sunny winter Sunday. We were actually up here to participate in the Alice in Wonderland Scavenger Hunt (which our team won Best Group Photo!). This was our lunch destination right on the 101. Thank goodness the outdoor area is pet friendly (not sure about inside :/). Since I do intermittent fasting- I was hungry by the time we arrived. I needed a nice cold pint of Scrimshaw Pilsner & the Short Rib Nachos ($19) is what I picked from the Weekend Brunch Menu. When the order comes out- it's heaping! I literally finished EVERYTHING! I loved how the short ribs were finely shredded. They didn't look so heavy on top of the freshly fried tortilla chips. The ratio of the bier cheese, pico de gallo, RIPE mango salsa, & chipotle mayo was perfect! Didn't make the chips super soggy & I used my fork to spread the yummies onto the naked chips at the bottom of the bowl. There's an additional sidewalk parklette for tables/ chairs. Wish I had the chance to snag a pic w/ the Ron Burgundy mural inside. Staff was awesome- always checked on us. And you're allowed to split checks however you'd like. Just mention it while/ before ordering.
google avatar

Greg C.

Yelp
Service was great. My wife and I wanted to share a salad. The server brought it out on two plates for us. Plus it was quite tasty. We didn't even need to wait long.
google avatar

Jarek M.

Yelp
Nice spot to relax and enjoy a beer. The Bier Garden has great location and the bar looks pretty cool inside. I like that all the windows open wide and bring outside inside. You can sit outside and face the bar or get the table in the back patio. The outside heaters will keep you warm during cold days. Drinks we ordered were good and were prepared fast. The food menu is not bad either. There are a few good options to choose from (portions are generous!). The sandwich we ordered was good and came with very tasty fries. Onion rings were fried well and were not oily. My quinoa salad with beets had way too much balsamic dressing which made it very acidic. I didn't finish it. We will come back next time we visit Encinitas.
google avatar

Marissa M.

Yelp
Came in for an early dinner with friends and were able to get a table inside. The ambiance of the restaurant is cute and I like the open look to enjoy the beach weather and busy street. It took a little while for the waitress to take our orders and the food to come out but wasn't crazy long. My boyfriend and I shared the southwest fried chicken sandwich and really enjoyed it. It had loads of flavor and they even cut it in half for us. It had quite the kick, luckily we both love spice but we thought it might be good to name it spicy or have some sort of symbol letting people know as it wasn't super obvious upon ordering how much spice would be on it. The side of fries were simple and good and the ranch was yummy. Everyone seemed to like their food. The only con was my friend mistakenly ordered the chicken sandwich with no bacon without realizing there was other pork products on it so he had to send it back. Unfortunately his food wasn't ready until we were all done eating which a bit of a bummer since he had to eat alone. The food service is definitely on the slower side but the food is good.

Yelp
So...Encinitas is definitely...for the people. I mean...you can trip into the next food place or bar. Like everything is very close and fun. Or...its supposed to be. The 3 stars are for service and food. The food was a decent ok. Like....maybe the kitchen staff has just done it so routinely that they didnt put effort. But, all tastebuds are different. But, presentation was 10! Food was 5. Service- 2 and thats me being nice. The young woman looked like she'd rather be hanging out anywhere else but her job. Then, waited till I got forced to tip. *insert awkward stares* I dont blame her for not wanting to be working, it was a beautiful day....but like, your job should be fun!!!! Wait list- uhhh...I didnt understand it. Yes, there were 10 open tables, and no, no one was in line waiting. But, I guess reserving online and giving ppl the luxury of coming in whenever they want is totally fine. They told us 45 min wait. But, good ol bar to the rescue. We found a bar top, but you must like ppl to go here, because someone you dont know may sit directly across from you and hey...well...makes for very great moments or awkward times

Yelp
Great spot! Great service, great beer selection. Bacon Mac and cheese was really really good. It's nice after a long day on the beach - feeling high from the rays and negative ions to catch your breath and continue feeling good......
