Atlanta Restaurants: Here’s the Menu for Chef Guy Wong’s Restaurant Big Boss Chinese in Midtown - Eater Atlanta

"After several construction and permitting delays over the last few months, Big Boss Chinese from chef Guy Wong (Ruby Chow’s, Miso Ko, Ton Ton) opens tonight in Midtown. Housed in the former Chinese Buddha space on 10th Street, once owned by his mother, Wong has described Big Boss Chinese as the “more casual little brother” to his Old Fourth Ward restaurant Ruby Chow’s. The menu here centers on “Chinese American classics” paired with beer, wine, sake, and bubble tea. Due to industry-wide staffing shortages, Big Boss Chinese is currently only open for takeout, with dine-in service expected in the future." - Beth McKibben

Google
I lived in New York City for 8 years and missed NY style Chinese food in Atlanta. I am so happy to have found this place! The food is solid and I can tell, very fresh. The veggies are not wilted like at other places and love that everything is made to order. The eggrolls are the best I have ever tried- wow! hand rolled and made fresh! That is impressive. My go to's are General Tso, Mongolian chicken, Peking duck buns, soup dumplings, chicken lo mein, crab rangoon, pork fried rice and more. The food is outstanding and I am enjoying their new outdoor patio so much. They offer free parking- who does that anymore in-town Atlanta?!

Google
I’m not sure what changed, but the food quality has improved significantly since I first visited seven years ago. The menu is now more streamlined with fewer dishes, but the quality is dramatically better. We ordered lo mein, and for the first time, there was actually more meat than noodles! My roommate is pretty picky about sweet and sour chicken, but he said this was one of the best versions he’s ever had, very crispy and flavorful. Prices are reasonable, especially in this economy. My roommate and I will definitely be coming back. P.S. According to my buddy, this is the best hangover food around. 🍻🍃

Google
Egg rolls came out very fresh and hot! Weren’t expecting them to be so big either. House fried rice very delectable and full of flavor. Berry helped me narrow my choices down for food choices! Thank you ! Will be back

Google
A perfect, retro Chinese spot right in the heart of midtown. We are massive fans of Buford Highway restaurants and love authentic flavors, but when we stay inside the perimeter, this is our #1 favorite spot. They do all the classic Chinese American dishes perfectly, with really strong and fresh flavors. Order the special, dine-in only, spicy peanut noodles or Szechuan pork and green beans! Dine in or takeaway, Big Boss never misses!

Google
Food was delicious and portions very generous. The decor is really cool. The basil fried rice with chicken was one of the specials for dine in and it was fabulous. My son had General Tso chicken and liked it as well. The Crab Rangoon was a hit. Thanks to Barry for serving us!!! Barry, hope my lottery numbers are a winner!!!

Google
My favorite place for Chinese food in Midtown. It's the place I go to when I'm craving Chinese food. High quality, fast and friendly service. I usually get takeout, but the restaurant is nicely decorated and clean. I've tried many things on their menu. Everything is good and the quality is consistent.

aster

Google
Super solid Chinese takeout with one of the best aesthetics I've seen. Haven't eaten inside but it's a cool vintage diner vibe too & they have dine-in specials. Really like how every dish has protein options & you can throw in a side of broccoli for $3.

Orion James

Google
I am a regular here, so much that I can walk in and the person at the front (usually Berry, my goat) knows what I want. I always get the dumplings, fried, with pork fried rice. Dumplings are super mid when they are steamed, but when they are fried they are soooooo good, and dipped in that sauce brings it to a whole new level! 100% recommend, props to kitchen because they make the best fried rice, and props to Berry because he's just a cool guy and fun to chat with.

Yelp
Hands down the best Chinese food in the city! Nice size portions, great flavor and the service was fast! Not your average Chinese place, it's better! I forgot to take a pic of the gen tso chicken it was gone before I could grab a pic it's that good with fresh veggies and peppers.
google avatar

Yelp
Dine In Review Okay, dine in is MUCH better than take out. Cheaper (with 2 soft drinks and a hot and sour soup = $46), and much much fresher. general tso chicken $15: been on a American Chinese kick this past 2 weeks. Got it here and was crunchy, deep fried dark meat, tossed in a sweet and tangy sauce; Dine in special Black Pepper Beef on a sizzling plate $15: a bit oily but good flavor. Still not my fav Chinese nor American Chinese in town, but considering its walking distance from my house, I would come again.
google avatar

Yelp
Got General tso, sesame chicken, and fried rice and all the food tasted spongey and reheated. Does not taste fresh, couldnt even finish food. Would recommend other chinese takeout.

Yelp
Thank god for this place!!! Our favorite Chinese place Chin Chin off Howell Mill closed and we were desperate for some Chinese food. I had heard about this place and man it did not disappoint!! We got the shrimp fried rice and house fried rice and the servings were GIANT and plentiful with protein. We also got the dumplings and crab rangoons and the egg rolls and everything was literally was so delicious and such a good price!! They have dine in and have dine in specials so we want to try that but their to go is excellent quick and the staff is super nice!!! 10/10

Yelp
The order was wrong. And the food all tasted the same. Mediocre. Bummed me out. Really hoped it would be as good as other reviews said. I regret spending the money.
google avatar

Yelp
The decor and lighting of this place is really cool! You definitely feel like you're in a new place as soon as you walk in. The food was really good, I would be back. My favorite was the shrimp fried rice! It felt like a real authentic rice with good quality. My least favorite was the crab rangoon, it was kinda bland. The service was okay. But overall I will be back!

Yelp
On our way home yesterday from the ATL Jazz Festival we stopped here. I may be a tough critic because I absolutely love Chinese cuisine, but I was really really hopeful that Big Boss would deliver. However I was completely underwhelmed. Although there were so many reviews stating how flavorful the food is, that wasn't our experience. Customer service was great! The young lady who took my order via phone had excellent skills and notated my seafood allergies beautifully. Also, when I approached the counter, they were super friendly. The restaurant was quaint, nothing special but very clean. So though I'll likely not go here in the future, I'm glad we received as y h great service.

Yelp
Walking inside it looks like a cheesy Chinese restaurant, blue/green decor with red accents. I was intimidated where it was at, and thought parking might be tough. For it's location in midtown the parking doesn't get any easier! We ordered to go, and had the Sesame Chicken, Mongolian Beef, and General Tso's Chicken with egg rolls. Our two favorites were the Mongolian beef and General Tso's with the sesame chicken a distant 3rd place. Both the Mongolian Beef and General Tso's had flavorful veggies, but didn't scimp on the meat. The portion sizes are awesome! We made 6 meals put of three entrees. And we didn't need the extra rice. Bottom line, I think they executed perfectly American Chinese food.

Ashley G.

Yelp
Awesome friendly staff and the food is even better! Went two nights in a row and it absolutely didn't disappoint. Sizzling Steak with Onions the first night, House green beans the next. Both were daily specials and were excellent!
google avatar

Jason M.

Yelp
Big Boss is pretty good Chinese for Atlanta. Best thing is their beef and broccoli- such tender and delicious beef. Note that their fried chicken tends to have a VERY thick breading, so I don't enjoy their sesame / general Tso's chicken.
google avatar

Vyshnavi N.

Yelp
I live right next to this restaurant and for many this is a midnight run for dinner. Recommend order to go. The sitting area is not clean and the staff is very low. All the general and popular Chinese food nothing new. The only difference is that this place made an effort to market to Genz with neon lights and bold marketing

Yelp
When I say the food is BOSS??! The northern United States does not--I repeat, *does NOT*--know how to do food. Ever since moving from my home state of Louisiana in 2018, I've come across one mediocre "top-rated" Chinese restaurant after another, especially in Texas. Now, I have Chinese restaurants here in DC that I frequent, which are really good. But they still don't hold a candle to what we have in my native southeastern U.S. I lived in ATL for a few months a decade ago, and a business trip brought me back in March 2023. In a great hotel room, I wanted some great Shrimp Fried Rice, and Big Boss did not disappoint. The portion was a very nice to-go size, and the side of steamed broccoli was as fresh and crunchy as ever. Pigging out over the city lights of Midtown, I had to stop myself so that I'd have some left for later in the night. This was, by far, the best Shrimp Fried Rice I've had in more than 5 years. But considering where I was, I'm not surprised. I can still taste the shrimp, of which there were plenty. My morning flight got cancelled because of the big storm, and I was so disappointed that they were closed on Mondays. I mean, my stomach was RUMBLING! But I'll be back in the same hotel on nearly the same weekend next year, and Big Boss is the only place I'm thinking about food-wise. Shrimp Fried Rice: $17.50 Side of Steamed Broccoli: $3.75 Special thanks to Brad with Uber Eats.

Clarence R.

Yelp
This meal was AMAZING. The chicken from General Tso? Fantastic. I have very specific tastes when it comes to dark meat chicken, and you may have been the best I've ever tasted, BigBoss. Excellent service, affordable prices, and plenty of free parking. I can't believe how many times I've driven by. I will definitely return to try the rest of the menu.

Yelp
Decor, lighting, and furniture are all on point - the throwback vibes are definitely there. There's even a vintage arcade machine in the corner and a nice looking merch display case. Menu is small - no frills - yet covers all you really need for the classic Chinese "fast food" / takeout joint. You order at the counter and get a number to put at your table if you choose to dine in. Food was satisfying and came out in under 5-10 minutes. Portion size was decent, more on the smaller end. Each entree comes with white rice. Also there's a 10% off student discount for Georgia Tech students! The sesame chicken was probably the best out of the dishes that my friends and I tried. The breading was crispy and the chicken was juicy. Sauce had a great texture that coated the exterior of each piece but didn't make the dish soggy. Mongolian beef was great and cooked well. The spicy garlic pork wasn't very spicy (had some red chili flakes) but the veggies were sauteed nicely. Service was pleasant and prompt. Will return!

Yelp
Simple, delicious, flavorful. Felt like some traditional takeout Chinese food. Good ratings and a simple menu steered me towards Big Boss and they didn't disappoint. Everything was fresh and hot, even though delivered via Uber Eats. They get extra points for throwing in a sticker. I'm a crazy sticker lady!

Yelp
Until recently, I ordered food from Big Boss via a delivery service. I was always pleased. My opinion changed however last week when I stopped in to pick up my order. The fish tank located at the entrance was disgusting; the aquarium was filthy with diseased fish swimming about. The site only made me wonder what the kitchen looks like....
google avatar

Yelp
Hands down best Chinese (and only one in Atlanta) that finally has Chinese done right after years and years of searching.
google avatar

Yelp
I can honestly not say enough about this restaurant. Between the amazing friendly service to incredible food. Located on 10th and spring street it is easily accessible with plenty of parking. Let's talk food on my travels home. I recommend the Crab Rangoon. While stuck in traffic these tasty bites make the drive home simple. Main course : Mongolian beef is my go to. The first time I ordered it to be honest.... I ate the entire thing. Full of tender bites. I am in absolute love. Big enough to share. Overall: this place never disappoints is truly amazing and you will never be disappointed. I'm finally sold on Chinese. Do yourself a favor and enjoy.
google avatar

Lisa D.

Yelp
Ok Chinese food. Flavors of the dish are there but not very strong. Did not realize that rice doesn't come with an entree. Have to purchase it separately. Still on the hunt for a local Chinese takeout spot since Malaya closed.
google avatar

Neha A.

Yelp
Love this place for some GOOD, delicious Chinese food. Everything was cooked well, tasted fresh. Have you ever wanted crab rangoons with more filling? WELL they have them here. I got Mongolian beef and shrimp fried rice. Big portions enough for two people per entree. Only thing I wish they had were non pork dumplings! Other than that everything was excellent. Love the old 70s restaurant vibes too.
google avatar

Marcy J.

Yelp
I had the longest day at work and wanted something tried and true so decided to get some Chinese food. Big Boss came up and I decided to give it a shot. If you drive too fast you will definitely miss this location as it's in a little cut and there's no parking. I decided to order my Chinese food stable chicken and broccoli. I was in between egg rolls and crab Rangoon. I asked the server and he stated that the crab Rangoon was pretty good. Got home and when I opened the crab Rangoon my heart sank. I hoped that I was judging to quickly but it wasn't good. Definitley a sugar bomb and not a piece of crab in site. The broccoli and chicken was hot and fresh however not the same sauce that in use too. It tasted off and left a weird aftertaste. Overall I've had better since I've been in ATL so I will stick to them.

Yelp
Heard about this spot opening up. I feel like a Chinese food spot was needed in midtown - I see a lot of ramen and poke spots but not Chinese takeout. My sister said that folks in her building liked this spot so we decided to try it. The ambience is very old school Chinese takeout restaurant like ones in nyc. There is a cool fish aquarium and a nice little sitting area if you are waiting. There are also plenty of booths and tables to sit at. I like that their chopsticks gave their name and address and stuff in the label. Anyone know what the art says on their walls or on the chopsticks? I'm just curious what they wrote on their decor and chopstick wrappers. There is a bar and bubble tea machine in development. I would give the service a 1-2 (maybe a 3) out of 5. The service in the front was OK. I wish they had a menu that was also printed because my sister is visually impaired and couldn't read the menu hanging up on the wall. Ladies in the front weren't mean either, just meh. They seemed bored. The guy who was serving the food seemed efficient and would mark to make sure what we got on the ticket for our table, but he forgot to give us a second plate for our lo mein. He seemed confused when I asked, but wouldn't you want your own plate if the entree was going to be shared for 2 (and even came with a serving spoon?)? We did not get rabbit candies with our meal either... IDK if we went on a bad day or what but the service was lacking. The food itself was pricy, but the portions were big. Everything was tasty and came out quickly. There are vegetarian options too. I will say 7 bucks for soup at a Chinese restaurant is really expensive... I would definitely get takeout here again but the service sucked. Even my sister mentioned why did we not get a plate for the it even comes with a serving spoon?... this place seemed super busy with takeout orders so maybe that's the way to do it.

Yelp
Food 4/5, Service 5/5 I called to place a takeout order. The staff was kind and efficient. When I picked up my order, the staff informed me about a student discount which was greatly appreciated. They were friendly and prompt when handling payment and retrieving my food. I got General Tso's Chicken and Crab Rangoons. The chicken included green bell peppers, onions, and carrots. It came with a side of rice. The vegetables were great, they were fresh and crisp. The chicken was not soggy but not crunchy. It was maybe slightly overcooked but did not detract from my experience. The sauce was mild, it was not too sweet or spicy. I would have preferred more aggressive flavors but it wasn't bad. Other reviews claimed the sauce came separate for takeout orders but it was already mixed into mine which may have compromised the texture of the breading. There was a good amount of rice and nothing else to note about it. The General Tso's Chicken was slightly lower than my expectations but I was still satisfied. The Crab Rangoons included 5 pieces and sweet and sour sauce. The were essentially fried wontons with cream cheese. I did not taste a discernable crab flavor. There was plenty of sauce to be split among the five pieces. The Cran Rangoons met my expectations. The portions were large and I was full. I think the value was good. I was pleasantly surprised with the high chew candy and sticker they included in the bag. Overall the food was good and service was excellent. I wish I had tried it earlier and would try other dishes from here in the future.

Yelp
Just solid old-school Chinese. Simple menu, but everything is done well. They have vegetarian options for almost every dish. Their egg drop soup and crispy noodles are amazing, as are the General Tso's and Sesame Chicken. Big, crispy egg rolls, too. We often get takeout, which is always solid, but everyone is so nice when you dine in. And tbh, the food is better when you go to the restaurant. And fast! The dining room is basic, but there's a cool paper dragon on the ceiling and they have free Street Fighter in the corner!

Jb B.

Yelp
Quick service, delivered to your front door! Food quality is good for the price. I was satisfied with my order.

Karen K.

Yelp
The food was surprisingly good! Can't remember the last time I ate authentic Asian food! Will try it again
google avatar

Jeremiah B.

Yelp
Best Chinese food I ever tasted . I like the fact it's only 8 main dishes to choose from . Can't stand those restaurants with 100 menu items
google avatar

Leonor G.

Yelp
We decided to try a new place and came across Big Boss. Food was very delicious! Most definitely going back!
google avatar

Tom K.

Yelp
Ordered chicken and broccoli with a side of egg rolls. It was very good, even if the broccoli was a tad undercooked. The sauce and seasoning were excellent. Chicken egg rolls were top notch.

Erica L.

Yelp
Absolutely awful. Never had sesame chicken I had to add the sauce to. Chicken was dry. Rice was dry. It came really quick. Now I know why. Charge $2.50 for a 12 ounce can of coke. Very disappointed.

Susan R.

Yelp
Over 40$ meal ate plain white rice and canned soda. Sweet and sour chicken fried to small hard bits and both chicken and crab rangoon tasted like old rancid cooking oil. Absolutely no crab just warm cream cheese.
google avatar

Myesha S.

Yelp
I ordered takeout from Big Boss while I was in Atlanta for the weekend. My fiancé and I wanted something quick. We only had to wait for around 45 minutes. My fiancé had the beef lo mein and I had the sweet and sour chicken. My fiancé loved his meal and as me it was just good but nothing special. We did take out so cannot rate the ambiance.
google avatar

Hope D.

Yelp
For years I've been asking, what would it take to have a great Chinese takeout place in Midtown? I mean, how hard it could it be? Big Boss might be our answer! Housed in the former Chinese Buddha space on 10th Street, this place is owned by the talented son of the woman who ran that restaurant for many years. The place has a great vibe & here's what leapt out at me from the cool electronic menu: - Egg Roll - Crab Rangoon - General Tso's Chicken - House Fried Rice - Chicken Lo Mein - Spicy Garlic Pork - Chicken Fried Rice So, basically, Chinese comfort food!
google avatar

King F.

Yelp
Atlanta may be the hardest place to find NYC styled Chinese food. I had high hopes for this place for some reason even though its brand new lol. The Instagram ads just caught my attention tbh. 1. Location - They are downtown.. located at what used to be Chinese Buddha. They have designated 2hr parking free. 2. Customer Service- AMAZING! The cashier was super helpful and friendly and so were everyone working as 2 employees greeted me. Currently they are takeout only but they have alot of seating for whenever they open it up. The decor gives me upscale Chinese Restaurant vibes 3. THE FOOD - Let me start off by saying, whenever i do food reviews, I always try to eat the food immediately to give a proper review so i ate this food in my car. I ordered General Tso Chicken & Crab Rangoon. The General Tso Chicken was just OK. Definitely not the best nor was it the worst. It honestly tasted NOTHING LIKE GENERAL TSO CHICKEN. There was no spice & chicken was soggy . General Tso chicken is one of my favorite Chinese dishes so i was super disappointed. They also only serve it with white rice. You cant substitute that for any other rice or side not even for an up charge (i tried). The Crab Rangoon should just be called Cream cheese puffs or something cause their wasn't a bit of crab in them.. they were decent though. 4. PRICE - So again.. i ordered General Tso Chicken w/ white rice & Crab Rangoon. At a typical Chinese spot id expect to pay around $15 maximum (with fried rice lol). This order came up to $21.08! I 100% wouldn't mind that price if the food was delicious however im quite mad I wasted my money. 5. FINAL REVIEW - Since they are new, i still recommend giving them a try but definitely skip the General Tso unless you like it soggy & the Crab Rangoon unless you don't like Crab. I personally will only return after seeing how they do overtime!

Vaishu M.

Yelp
We got takeout from here on a weeknight, and Big Boss lived up to their reviews. The chicken was perfectly breaded and crispy even after bringing it home. I appreciated that the sauce was packaged separately, so I mixed the chicken with the sauce after getting home. They provided a generous portion of rice, and the protein portions are generous as well. I had leftovers the next day. The inside is quirky with blue/green lighting. Parking is difficult here. We parked at the gas station next door and walked over to pick up food. Location is not ideal as there's a lot of crime that happens in this area, but it's relatively safe during the day. I'd recommend Big Boss and look forward to coming back.

Yelp
I was a little torn between 3 and 4 stars. I always get a little nervous when Fried rice Is marketed as New York style (eating in NYC has given me high standards). Unlike many places where a little meat is placed atop a mountain of rice, Big Boss' meat to rice ratio in the house fried rice was great! The Flavor and seasoning was good as well. The downside for me was the egg and veggies. There was way too much scrambled egg - some really big, stringy pieces too (not appealing). I ordered mine with no onions, and I wanted carrots but no peas (I'm picky). Assuming they use premixed frozen veggies because ordering one without the other isn't An option. Fresh veggies would have been my preference anyway. Overall, the food was good. The staff was super friendly and moved the needle to the fourth star!
google avatar

Chris G.

Yelp
Absolute FIRE. Ordered Uber eats. Vegetables were super fresh, crisp, and cooked perfectly. The general TSO's was still crisp and saucy/sticky like it should be. Chicken egg rolls were great. Portions are actually pretty massive. Definitely making this the go to for delivery Chinese.
google avatar

ashley h.

Yelp
Got takeout tonight and it was great. Very hard to find great Chinese takeout here in Atlanta. This is our 4th order and we love it. They put sauces on the side which is huge, not a gloppy mess when you get home. Great flavors and such a cute spot if you dine in
google avatar

Taylor H.

Yelp
I love this Chinese food, prices are good, menu is simple and great! I want to try everything on the menu. So good worth the try!
google avatar

Malik S.

Yelp
Very rarely do I eat food and immediately think about leaving a review(or at all). With that being said the food was so phenomenal I had to! I ordered the house fried rice with a side of crab Rangoon's and this is absolutely authentic NYC worthy Chinese! 11/10

D L.

Yelp
Super beautiful space and maybe the best chow fun I can find in Atlanta. Seriously. This chow fun is so good. I also ordered and super enjoyed the garlic shrimp! It had a ton of fresh veggies, which was a good balance to slightly heavier noodles. The staff were all very nice! V excited to come back.
google avatar

Sabrina L.

Yelp
I am use to Chinese Buddha but Big Boss still is hitting the same. From the customer service to the food is always on point. I travel from Gwinnett just for this food is definitely worth it!!

Nina G.

Yelp
During a recent overnight stay in downtown Atlanta, I came across your place while scrolling through Uber Eats for a meal. I placed an order which came very fast to the hotel. The food was hot, and it's the best chinese meal I've had in a long time. I had to let you know how good the food was. I'll definitely being ordering again. Thanks so much.
google avatar

DeeDee S.

Yelp
Three stars really because the staff was extremely friendly. The food unfortunately was lacking in flavor. The vegan options are a major disappointment and everything generally taste's the same not to mention the vegan "chicken" looked like diced ham in my fried rice and tasted like nothing. I requested my rice to be spicy and I'm confident there was no attempt to make it spicy at all. I did receive a large portion of everything i ordered but unfortunately most of it landed in the trash. Would not try again.

Ashton B.

Yelp
I love this place! I loved it more back when it used to be Chinese Buddha, not gonna lie, however, they opened back up as Big Boss and I will say even though the menu is much smaller than before, it was still such a vibe and the food was beyond amazing. I got the general tso's chicken meal and added shrimp lo mein. My favorite was the crab rangoon, it almost tasted as good as it did back during their Chinese Buddha days. Glad to know I can still eat some amazing crab rangoon. The atmosphere is cute as well and the young lady at the front counter was the sweetest. I wish I could remember her name. Overall experience was great and I will definitely be back once a week lol
google avatar

Lina K.

Yelp
This is our favorite spot to get Chinese food! Some of my go to favorites are the general tso chicken, sweet and sour chicken, Mongolian beef, lo mein, egg drop soup, and I could go on and on lol. Their staff is also very friendly! If you're in the area, definitely give them a try, it will not disappoint. Great food and ambience, can't go wrong.

Justin W.

Yelp
The food quality was good and the delivery was very prompt, well before the estimated delivery time. I would order from here again, thank you very much for the experience.

Yelp
Had a great meal with family intown. Mongolian beef, sweet & sour chicken for the win! The decor was retro cool

Yelp
really yummy!! the sesame chicken was really good and the rice reminded my of NYC Chinese food (iykyk). Just wish there was a bit more noodles in the lo mein. Takeout was great and very fresh but I can't wait to dine in. the decor was super cute!
