Philly’s Best Barbecue Restaurants, According to Eater Editors | Eater Philly

"Delco’s go-to barbecue keeps somewhat limited hours like a few other places on this list, but that doesn’t scare away a steady stream of regulars lining up to take out cherry- and oak-smoked ribs and cajun-spiced brisket. Sandwiches at Big Daddy’z BBQ & Grill are over the top — think pulled brisket and kielbasa finished with cajun mayo, caramelized onions, and jack cheese." - Ernest Owens

Google
It was just wonderful! We loved everything. Can't wait to return.

Google
The Texas beef brisket was amazing, best BBQ I’ve had since leaving the lone star state. The wife love her ribs.

Charisse Davis

Google
The ribs and baked beans were good. Very tender. The cornbread was no where near what cornbread should taste like. Same for potato salad. I didn’t know what I was as eating. Both were horrible. Tried the jalapeño Mac n cheese but that was just edible. But you win some, you lose some! I would definitely go back for ribs again.

Google
$30 for this small portion??? To expensive for the portion size. The combo size has nothing to do with a combo, everything is a la carte. Baked beans taste like they're out of a can, mac and cheese lacked flavor. Brisket was thin and fatty, ribs were decent but swimming is sauce. Wouldn't make a special trip to this place nor recommend it. I've had way better.

Google
The Texas brisket and the Carolina pulled pork is some of the best bbq I've ever had. Cajun corn, jalapeño mac-n-cheese, and the cornbread are all genuine and homemade like everything else, great stuff!

Google
Big Daddy’z BBQ & Grill located on McDade Blvd is a great BBQ place - the best in Delco by far. Good variety of BBQ items from Ribs to Chicken and delicious sides such as Mac & Cheese, Beans, etc. Try the BBQ Chicken which is deep fried briefly and is juicy and tender. Staff is very friendly and welcoming. Just the right amount of smoke for perfection. Dine-in is a very small area but there is some. No waitress service.

Google
Big Daddy’z gets added to my BESegal BBQ tour! The brisket here is exceptional, outstanding. Smoked well, sliced thin, very tender and flavorful. The pork ribs are excellent too. They’re thick, meaty and very flavorful. Not sure what the pit-master dusts on he top, but it tastes great. High marks for the homemade brisket-baked beans. The fried cabbage is fried and then served in a cabbage juice.

Google
We’ve ordered here from my work quite a few times big $200+ orders, and everything is always so delicious. The order is also always correct even in it’s big size! My and my coworkers highly recommend!!!

Yelp
First timer and I'll be back. I tried the perogies and kielbasa with onions and cheese, so good!! I also ordered a small brisket and jalapeño Mac and cheese. You can smell the goodness from outside. I like that you can customize your order and not stuck with a platter. I like they have different size/portion options. The perogies were delish: nice pot oat perogies smothered in onions and cheese with nicely charred kielbasa. You get sour cream and a sauce on the side which compliments it but really not needed. I loved how thin the brisket was cut. This is not a chunk of brisket but shaved slices. The brisket was perfectly Smokey, moist and just enough fat. The Mac n cheese was good either way a hint of jalapeño. I did add some garlic powder at home. It lacked a bit of seasoning. The jalapeño corn bread was so fluffy and perfect and the bacon sugar bbq sauce was my fave. I'll be back!

Yelp
The BEST barbecue I've ever had. LOVE the brisket, cole slaw and cornbread. My husband always gets the ribs!

Yelp
Rhis spot did not disappoint at all. I had the wings and baked beans and it was so delicious. Also got a salad and everything was fresh. Recommend and can't wait to return.

Steve T.

Yelp
amazing food the Staff are awesome. Best wings in all of Delco by far. Lynn's famous is great must have. Don't wait try them now only open Wednesday through Saturday 11-7 or till they sell out

Yelp
I looovveeee this place! The beef brisket is delicious, as is the pulled chicken and pork. The sauces really add the cherry on top; bacon and brown sugar bbq sauce is my favorite. The sides are great too, the coleslaw has the perfect balance. I just wish they had later hours!
google avatar

JM T.

Yelp
Always good bbq. Obsessed with the triple B smoked brisket, blue cheese, smoked bacon sandwich. Great to eat in or takeout food is always solid.

Kathi F.

Yelp
Counter service with booths. Large portions of delicious bbq. Loved my pulled chicken! Husband had a burger. Fried pickle spears were so hot and delicious... hardly could eat them to the end of the meal. Cannot wait to go back

Yelp
Ok, it took me forever to try Big Daddy'z as I had a 'favorite' BBQ place and was loyal-but after trying Daddy'z, my previous spot will most likely never see me again...WOW. They are amazing! Tender, flavorful, their sauce is banging!!! and I normally NEVER get sauce, preferring dry rub. Although they have some seats, this is really more of a to go place but GO. We've tried everything and it is all fantastic. (Try the corn!) They also have good specials. Two things: bring cash, you'll pay a service fee for credit and if you're looking for football fare you have to order ahead as they are closed on Sunday, which is a bummer!

Yelp
Excellent barbecue in Delco. Restaurant is small and has a nice hole in the wall charm. Service is friendly and inviting. Food is high quality and delicious. A must for any BBQ fan. Menu is extensive and they have some very creative offerings and sides. Well done.

Yelp
This was probably the best barbecue I've had in the northeast! Coming from Texas, I've been in search of finding a decent Texas BBQ place with great ribs and brisket and this place got it! Got the brisket snd ribs and they were delicious. The brisket was thinner than what I'm used to but I liked it. Check this place out yall

Yelp
You can smell this place blocks away and my goodness it's well worth stopping by and getting something to eat. Delicious!!! Best BBQ around.

Patrick J.

Yelp
My favorite bbq around. Great portions and the lady at the counter are great. They also have an excellent birch beer.

Yelp
Some of the BEST BBQ we've ever had. Everything is so flavorful & delicious !!! Highly recommend !!!

Yelp
Pretty pretty pretty good! I had ribs, pulled pork, kielbasa, brisket with mac cheese cole slaw corn bread. I'm going back for the ribs and cornbread.

Yelp
Sometimes you just get in the mood for some good ole bbq and since were in Covid times, going to a cookout is the furthest from my mind. So in order to satisfy my bbq cravings, I decided to finally check out Big Daddy'z bbq and grill. I ordered the 2 meat combo which consisted of keilbasa and ribs. My platter also came with two sides and I choose macaroni salad and parsley potatoes. It was good for a bbq spot in Philly. I'm definitely not expecting Texas style or even my dad's bbq. My food had a decent smoky taste. The smoke wasn't a powerful smoke but the smoke was there and my platter was flavorful. I also ordered the cheesesteak brisket which was kinda chewy and dry. I prolly wont order that again. I would definitely check this spot out again. Service was friendly and efficient. The prices were also reasonable.

Laura K.

Yelp
Amazing food and service! This place never disappoints! It is the one restaurant our family can agree on.
google avatar

J P.

Yelp
Ok. If you want the most DELICIOUS ribs you must go here. They have seating but it's really more of a takeout place. 1000% recommend ribs. Go early since they can sell out.
google avatar

Michael R.

Yelp
On my list for MUST visit eatery! Got great referrals from others who let me view their plates! LOL!

Helene A.

Yelp
We have cravings for Big Daddyz, the food is beautiful. I'm fond of the two meat platters, I get brisket and pulled pork. Heavenly! Everything is home made including the side dishes. Don't delay, when they sell out they close.

Rob A.

Yelp
The elite bbq of Delco!! It doesn't get any better. Always on time. Probably the best boneless wings on the planet too

Alyssa H.

Yelp
Our Review Overall: 3/5 Food: 4/5 Service: 0/5 My boyfriend loved his ribs and corn nuggets. He was disappointed when he did not receive the cornbread he ordered. The mac and cheese tasted very bland and was watery. It tasted freezer burnt. The food was okay but service was terrible. The woman who took our order over the phone rushed when repeating our order to the point that we couldn't even hear what she said. When we asked her to repeat our order she said "I just did". Once I went to pick up the food and gave the name I realized they put the order under the wrong name. While confirming what we ordered, the woman proceeded to say "I repeated the order over the phone". The disrespect was so unnecessary. Treat your customers with kindness and respect. After all, we are giving your business our hard earned money.

Yelp
Excellent food served by a great staff!! Ribs are the best! Limited seating so I usually do take out.
google avatar

Suzi K.

Yelp
Their Brisket Cheesesteak was amazing! And their service was pretty fast for takeout even on a weekend night.

Yelp
Big Daddy'z has earned a spot on my takeout rotation for sure. My bff and I get lunch takeout from here about once a month and we always look forward to the event. So far some of my favorites have been the brisket, kielbasa, and most definitely the corn nugget appetizer. While the dishes usually come with whatever sauce they suggest, for a few cents you can try other sauces and flavors as well. I've tried quite a few and my favorite sauce has to be the black cherry habanero. Very unique and definitely worth a try. One can get sandwiches, platters, or little create your own combos. I usually opt for the latter and load that jawn up with jalapeño corn bread and macaroni and cheese, both of which are fantastic. My only suggestion would be to have more sides, preferably an unadulterated vegetable like collard greens or green beans. Baked beans, coleslaw, or corn is pretty much the closest you can get to a vegetable here but I feel like green beans in particular should be offered, as they are on the menu but never available. Also for the love of god please clean the bathroom there. That was a horrific experience which mercifully came after I was done eating, as it surely would have ruined my appetite if it was before. But for take out bbq in my estimation this is by far the best around!

Yelp
Best wings I have had in a long time . Black Cherry Habenero is amazing . Ribs are always terrific as well . Wings are also very large . Service is always friendly Bring cash to pay so you and the business don't pay a surcharge . Very clean inside as well .

Yelp
Service was good, considering The place was very busy. We had to lasso the waitress occasionally, but she was pleasant. We really enjoyed our meal. It's a very casual place with a busy bar which has a happy hour.

Yelp
Drove up to folsom so I could try some BBQ, great choice. This was some great BBQ. I got the 2 meat combo platter. I got it with chicken, it came with a nice amount of chicken. It was cooked nice and the skin of the chicken with the bbq was great. I also got the 1/4 rack of ribs. They were delicious as well, they came right off the bone Foe my 2 sides I got the mac and cheese and corn. Both again were fantastic, it was a nice creamy mac and cheese which I prefer over the baked mac and cheese. The cornbread was real nice and sweet as well. Definitely complented the meal. Overall this was some great bbq definitely recommend trying this place out.

Yelp
I'd go 3 on the food but the great service and friendly staff pushes my overall rating to a 4. The pulled brisket sandwich was better than average but had too much sauce which rendered it impossible to taste any smokiness to the meat. The portion was ample, though. Potato salad was quite good. The cornbread was out of this world; had a dusting of spice to balance the sweetness. I was disappointed in the ribs as I am anytime a restaurant serves only baby back. The dry rub and bark were there but the size wasn't. Would like to revisit if my travels again take me to this part of Delco.
google avatar

Amanda T.

Yelp
First time customer! 5 stars, hands down best bbq around. Potato salad was fresh, great. I got it with pulled bbq chicken and a piece of cornbread (which was huge and delicious)! Will definitely recommend this place to all of my friends.

Lara D.

Yelp
Wasn't sure I was going to like the product from restaurant...it's difficult to find any local shops that provide good bbq. I was pleasantly surprised, the ribs were the kind that will "make you slap yo momma," they were fantastic. You will not be disappointed with anything you buy from here. Laura

Mark H.

Yelp
There's a reason that they sell out so often. I haven't had anything that I didn't like here. The fried pierogis are something out of this world, especially with the loaded baked potato sauce. If you haven't had them, you're missing something in your life, and you don't even know it. To be fair, all the BBQ is sauced, and you have to ask for it to be dry if you want it, but their sauce is so darn good, you don't. Everything is awesome, and that should be their theme song.
google avatar

Sarah L.

Yelp
The food was okay but unfortunately I thought the person working the front was very rude. I was actually going to ask about the fried pickles or some recommendations but she almost seemed annoyed that I was even asking questions. It was my first time there. Because the food was so so and the attitude I'll try it one more time because the reviews are so great, but I'm not in a hurry to go back.
google avatar

Drew C.

Yelp
The Texas Destroyer Burger wasn't just a burger, it's literally a smaller of all the meats in one burger. Had I had more time and ate in I'd order the wings and fries but still this burger was way more than I expected. Loved every bite
google avatar

Sandra C.

Yelp
The food is amazing. The staff is super nice and accommodating. Addicted to the ribs, pirogies & the Smokehouse Salad with pulled brisket ( enough for two meals). I've read multiple posts of them helping locals in need. Big hearts - will definitely keep giving them business because of this alone.
google avatar

Jasmine S.

Yelp
This place is definitely a hidden gem ! There's so many options and based off of what I tried today I'm sure everything tastes good. Can't wait to go back!! It is a little unfortunate that it isn't open everyday but hey, I feel like that makes it worth the visit Oh btw the macaroni and cheese is meh but the parsley potato is worth going back for alone !!!

Maria M.

Yelp
Best barbecue in Delaware county. Quality is consistent and the staff is great. Order early if you want it for game day.
google avatar

James P.

Yelp
When the #rotundchef says go to Big Daddy'z and try their version of a cheesesteak, I go to Big Daddy'z. The meat was very flavorful. The cheese sauce was very good. Parking, seating, bathroom and their own root beer round out the positives. I would have liked more meat.

K M.

Yelp
Big Daddy'z has the BEST ribs we've had in ages! The sauce is on the sweeter side than what we're used to, but the ribs are still really good. They're cooked just right, tender on the inside with the right amount of bark on the outside. We are old school BBQ rib connoisseurs from back in the day when The Rib Crib on Germantown Avenue was the pinnacle of BBQ heaven. The Rib Crib has been closed for years now, but Big Daddy'z fills the void. Check them out. The Ribs are the Bomb.

Yelp
Great food & even better people They make you feel at home, all the dishes are Great, cozy place.

Sue K.

Yelp
This is a great place for barbecue. Make sure you get there early enough before they sell out because it does happen. I enjoy their food and the atmosphere is friendly.

David S.

Yelp
Extended family dinner tonight! We had Steak & Shrimp Specials , Brisket, Ribs, Salads, Beans, Corn Bread, Mac & Cheese, Spiced Corn, Green Beans and Pierogis!! EVERYTHING was excellent. ALL demos represented, ALL thoroughly enjoyed! Will definitely be back!

Mindy M.

Yelp
First time trying this place, customer service was excellent, food was ready quick, super hot and fresh! Not easy to be pleased but it was well worth the money spent and loved every bit! Can't wait to return soon!

Dawn P.

Yelp
Best barbeque ever! Haven't tried one thing I haven't liked. Even the side dishes are great.

Bobby M.

Yelp
Food was good, really enjoyed the petal onions and the sauce that came with it. BBQ sauce availability was nice.
google avatar

Mariann W.

Yelp
It's a small place that moved from a smaller place in Ridley and from the outside doesn't look like much but....the food is to die for and the service is great. I have ordered both catering and pick up and had great experience with both. The two meat platters are a good value and can be split between two people...The ribs are fall off the bone delicious, the brisket melts in your mouth and the sides are good too with the baked beans and potato salad are just two of the gems to choose from. Haven't tried anything else because every time I go I can't not get the brisket lol.
google avatar

John L.

Yelp
Great sandwiches and Ribs, more of a fan side wise of their Potato Salad so I double on that when I order. Smoked chicken sandwich or platter and smoked/pulled pork are my usual go to's and they never disappoint. Good flavor and moist. Best BBQ in delco in my opinion

Nick B.

Yelp
"SOLD OUT"!!! PASSED BY THIS PLACE a zillion times and always wanted to try the bbq. so i noticed it was closed on certain days and i made mental note to stop in on the weekend. i passed by on a prime time friday at approx 6:30. i walk in and peruse the menu board for specials and i hear this lady at the counter say "sold out"!! i was like whaaat? and she said it with an air of pride too. i could not believe it!!! how can any business be successful and run out of food on a friday night at only 6:30??? it wasnt a one time thing because there was a reference to "sold out" on the menu board. so, listen you, whoever is running "big daddys", you antagonize people by having this ridiculous "exclusivity " policy. do you think i will ever stop in again???? not a chance. i will bad mouth your location by sharing my experience with as many good people who will listen. so i give it a BIG FAT ZERO RATING!!! BECAUSE I GOT ZERO SERVICE AND ZERO FOOD!!!!!! HEY BIG DADDY, LEARN TO RUN A FOOD BUSINESS!!!!........and get nicer professional staff to runthe joint. and thats what it is. a BBQ JOINT That runs out of food!!! !!
google avatar

Steven B.

Yelp
Everyone makes mistakes myself included. My mistake was not coming here sooner! I had a very good lunch here yesterday and I'll definitely be back for more. This place is easy to miss as its set way back from Chester Pike and is very small. One way to find it is to roll down your window and zero in on the amazing aromas coming from the smokers. Any discussion about ATMOSPHERE will be quick. It's a takeout only hole-in-the-wall with only a tiny little room to stand and place your order. There are two picnic benches outside where most folks wait for their orders to be ready. Of course you could also eat there. That happens quite a bit because everything smells so damn good you don't want to wait until you get home. CUSTOMER SERVICE is not a problem. These are friendly folks and as you place your order you can see into the open kitchen and chat with everyone. The menu was completely as expected. All the typical BBQ joint choices are there. I went with the two meat combo which comes with two sides and cornbread for about $14. I chose smoked kielbasa, brisket, corn and coleslaw. I was asked if I wanted caramelized onions on my kielbasa and I told them to go for it. I gotta tell you, the meats were 5+ stars delicious. The brisket was sliced very thin and perfectly sauced. The kielbasa was off the hook amazing and the onions were perfect on it. It may be the best kielbasa I've ever had. My sides were just ok. The corm was good with some bbq seasoning. The cornbread was moist but nothing special. My coleslaw was very fresh but the dressing was seriously lacking in flavor. They were all compliantly overshadowed by the amazing meats! On my next visit I'll likely try one of their huge sandwiches and skip the sides.

Yelp
Came here for a carnivore buddy's bday and was almost surprised at the quality of Barbeque only because it's so hidden among other sub-par restaurants. Big Daddy'z Barbeque is underrated, you will not get the same quality or quantity from anywhere else for anything near prices. I had the dry rub half rack ribs which were finger licking good. Definitely ate out of my friends' brisket way too many times. This is now our meat-craving go-to. Famous Dave's who?
