College Station Fried Chicken Chain Layne’s Will Open in Northwest Houston | Eater Houston

"A new brewery and craft beer bar opening at 1848 Airline Drive, this project is a collaboration between Al Gonzales (who will run the bar) and brewers Louie Espinoza and Oscar Gonzalez of Turkey Forrest Brewing. The venue will feature 24 taps—several reserved for Turkey Forrest’s offerings—and will brew heavy stouts, hop-forward IPAs, and Mexican-inspired beers in a back room. The concept aims to engage the neighborhood’s Hispanic community while introducing other craft-beer drinkers to different brewing styles, and its owners say it will be the first brewery in Houston to be fully owned by Mexican-Americans." - Brittanie Shey

Just found out about this place the day it was slated to close, through a friend who shared Big Owl's social media post announcing the closure. The Houston Chronicle also picked up the announcement. Sadly, it's one of many breweries and brewpubs to close in and around Houston this year, per HC. I tried five of the seven Turkey Forrest offerings on tap; I skipped the spicy stout and fruited sour. The lagers, pilsner and pale ale were OK, but I liked the cream ale the best, and filled a large growler of it to go. They had other craft beers on tap and in bottle, too. Writing a review a few hours before they close for good seems like an epitaph. I'm glad they made it four years; some don't last even that long. I wish I had known about them sooner, but apparently most of their marketing was through social media, which I don't use. Word-of-mouth can only get you so far. It'll be something to talk about when I share the growler of their brew with my craft beer friends.

I had the pleasure of attending their Lego event today. The staff was pleasant and attentive. The atmosphere was chill, great music, and a nice gathering spot for family/friends. I appreciate you all helping me find my choice beer. The #6 was delicious!

Big Owl is my new favorite neighborhood bar! Great people, clean place, great beers, and location! Definitely will be back! Gregory is super chill and friendly, we love coming here and seeing trying recommendations he has for us! They have food vendors come a lot and they always super good!

Big Owl Craft Brewery is hands down one of my favorite spots just outside the Heights. I've been coming here for a couple years now, and it never gets old. They’ve got an awesome selection of beers, always something new to try, but I still have my go-to favorites. What really makes Big Owl stand out, though, is the vibe. Whether it's Lotería nights, Free Taco Fridays (yes, really), or hanging with the run club crew, there’s always something fun going on. It feels like a true community spot, laid back, welcoming, and full of good energy. Love that they're locally and Hispanic owned too. You can really tell how much heart they put into everything. If you're into good beer and good people, you’ve gotta check this place out.

Went with my family last night for a Bingo event they were hosting and this place is the best. The staff went above and beyond so that my parents and godparents could watch the boxing match. They don’t go out much so they were so thrilled to be out and about at such a friendly and fun place. Especially since this bar had a wide selection of beers and seltzers, great seating and table games. This is the perfect neighborhood bar, my family and I will definitely be back!!! A big thank you to the staff, y’all are the best!!

Google
Big Owl is one of the best hidden gems around. The beer they brew in-house is fantastic, fresh, flavorful, and always evolving. On top of that, they have a solid selection of guest taps that keeps things interesting for every kind of beer lover. The staff is welcoming and passionate about what they do, and the vibe is relaxed and inviting. Free Taco Fridays are a fun touch that really sets them apart. Whether you’re a regular or just stopping by, Big Owl makes you feel right at home. Highly recommend!

Google
Great selection of beer and options for cider for those of us that don't drink beer. I tried their #1 and I loved it! I attended a Brushes and Brews event and I had a great time meeting new people.

Google
This place is the perfect spot to catch up with friends and enjoy a delicious craft beer. Its cozy couches and decor is warm and inviting and when you’re at the bar, it’s hard not to make friends with the cool beertenders. The owners are regularly present and take pride in their establishment- it definitely shows! They don’t have food on site, but many times there will be a vendor posted up outside with tasty food. They host weekly events, and there is always something to do here!

Yelp
I've stopped by once before and it was a great experience again. I wanted to chill with my dog somewhere and remembered that this place allows dogs inside. They also have dog bowls and water for your pups if needed. The bartender/owner was great, she let me try a beer before committing and checked on me several times during my stay there. It's nice to see they added more seating and more personal touches to the place. There's artwork to purchase on the walls, more tvs, additional cans of seltzer or thc drinks if that's more of your style. I love how it's locally owned and brewed. They were having smoked wings. 6 for $10 or 10 for $15. Comes with chips, carrots/celery and ranch. They were quite smokey, a lil salty but still delicious. The vibes are chill and they had football on. All and all a great place to stop by for a beer.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I have passed this place a million times and have never gone in, until this Tuesday afternoon where we decided to stop by. We ended up being mostly the only ones in the brew house for most of the evening which was a surprise, we enjoyed the beers and the service. There is a local brewery that is inside the brew house, Turkey Forrest Brewing. We enjoyed the hazy IPA, cream ale, and a watermelon tajin ale they had on tap. They also have beers and canned beverages from a variety of other places and popular canned drinks too, to suit any preference. My boyfriend and I had a really fun time playing board games they had available and chilling out. There were also Halloween movies and a playlist playing. Seems like we were there on a slow night, they appear to have events throughout the week such as a run club and bingo nights. Definitely a fun, chill option in the area!

Yelp
Next door to Wokker on Airline (they will bring food over to you if you order) I had never been but my coworker is a beer guy and said this spot is pretty nice, we had a drink while waiting for others before grabbing food/drinks at Meo. Seemingly quiet little strip center but this is a gem. Cozy inside with bar seating as well and plenty of tables and some couches. They brew some on site (Turkey Forrest brewing) but carry a variety of other options on tap, as well as sell from the cooler. They carry THC drinks (8th wonder and louie louie) as well which is always a bonus. Love to see that it is dog friendly.

Yelp
We were instantly greeted and felt at home. The staff was so great. They explained the different beers they had. They even brew some in house! There's plenty of seating and even some fun games for you to play for free, including darts, board, games, and a giant connect four. It's located in the strip mall so there is parking but not a ton. They have daily specials, so be sure to check that out. I enjoyed their peach sour. It was so delicious and super tangy.

Yelp
Great selection on tap, they have something for every beer drinker. Location is awesome with a few food options close by. Some of the nearby establishments will deliver food. Staff was greeting us the moment we walked in and were very good about making sure our drinks were refilled quickly.

Yelp

The staff went above and beyond so that my parents and godparents could watch the boxing match, they were so happy and had so much fun. This bar had a wide selection of beers and seltzers, great seating, table games and a third party food vendor right outside. This is the perfect neighborhood bar, the kinda place you regular at. My family and I will definitely be back!!! Again a big thank you to the staff, y'all are awesome!

Yelp
Stopped by here one afternoon after passing by it. Had an outstanding time! The owner is absolutely one of the nicest people and very informative and takes the time to explain all of the beers. Great local spot and plenty of room inside if you want to bring a big group! There are also a few game nights each week, so check them out! Highly recommend if you're visiting or in the area. There are also TVs in case you want to catch a game!

Yelp
Was invited out by friends to the grand opening. I am not a craft beer person BUT they have beer for all. I had the Taco Tuesday beer and it was awesome!!!! Environment was very receptive. Service was exceptional. Owner listened to what I liked in beer and made perfect suggestions for me to try. Food was provided by food trucks La Birria and DEEEELICIOUS. I recommend trying this establishment. They will soon have to expand. It is going to be hopping!!

Yelp
We loved the place. The staff was incredibly courteous. Their story in interesting. The painting really adds to it as well. Most importantly, they've got great in-house brews and outside ones too! Try this place out.

Yelp
Two of us ladies came in last night for a Mothers Day pint. The 2 owners/brewers were accommodating and generous with their pre order samples. We settled on "#2". We sipped and we talked with the fellows sliding in and out of our conversation , soliticous but never overbearing. They told us about their different activities on different nights which sounded like a lot of fun with excellent brews. I recommend this place.

Yelp
Really friendly and hospitable owners. Nice selection of local craft beers including a few brewed onsite. Reasonably priced pints and flights. Pizza food truck in the parking lot to provide some foundation to order an extra round. Recommended hangout to meet with some friends and watch the game or just chat and have some laughs.

Yelp
The owners are the brewers and they're super cool!! Nice spot. They have micheladas, which I love!! They taste so good I wanted to just chug the darn thing lol. Check it out!!

Yelp
Great neighborhood craft beer house with a laid back atmosphere. Had been meaning to try this place for a while and I wasn't disappointed. Impressed with the beer selection and was surprised to find a craft brewery, Turkey Forrest, brewing/supplying Big Owl inside! I'll be back for sure! Delicious beer
