Big Penny Social - Review - Walthamstow - London - The Infatuation

"Big Penny Social isn’t big, it’s massive. It's one of the few places in London where you can feasibly drink hoppy pale ales and park a Boeing 737. Despite being such a large, airy industrial space, this Walthamstow brewery always has a buzzing, town hall feel as families wander in to watch the football, 20-somethings swarm long picnic tables with carafes of boozy cocktails, and local couples swap battles over autonomy of the remote with a chewy, satisfying sourdough pizza. The fussy little butter sauce and walnut pesto small plates tend to be a disappointment but you’re in safe hands if you order with carbohydrate confidence—think double-stacked cheeseburgers, salami-topped pizza, and potato old faithful, fries. Nothing here will dazzle your taste buds, but if you find yourself tasked with arranging a last-minute group hang, you’ll be very glad that this supersized booze bunker exists. photo credit: Big Penny Social photo credit: Big Penny Social photo credit: Big Penny Social" - Heidi Lauth Beasley

What an atmosphere tonight. It's the place for celebrating when England women win. Brass band were sensational. So pleased the penalty was given.

Nice and big venue. A lot of different areas inside. Serves food and has few bars. Just a shame they don't have any parking close to the venue. We had a work party there and it was lovely.

Hi Big Penny Social, I just wanted to share some honest feedback about the recent Aperol Beach Party — unfortunately, it ended up being a real letdown. The event didn’t open until 6:30pm, half an hour late. When we finally got in, there was no ice available for the first hour, so the complimentary Aperol drinks couldn’t be served. Instead, we purchased warm lemonade. Even more frustrating, the beach bar was charging £7.50 for two small 150ml cans of the warm lemonade — about half a pint. Later on, we were able to get two full pints with ice for £7.40 inside the venue. Why such a huge difference in price and quality? We had to return those pints, too, because they tasted like water — though, to be fair, they were replaced without fuss. The entertainment didn’t match what was advertised either. The DJ started much later than expected, and the music at the start was awful indie — not the soulful house, soul, and funk that was promised. The decent music kicked in gone 7pm, and even then the sound was distorted through the speakers. Overall, it didn’t deliver what was promoted. I usually really enjoy this venue, but this event felt chaotic and disorganised. The one saving grace was we met some lovely people on the night but unfortunately virtually no atmosphere there. But I genuinely can’t understand how things went so wrong. I’m coming along to one of your comedy nights soon and really hope it’s better run. If this is the standard for events, it’s no surprise there were so few people there — maybe around 50? It’s such an amazing space with real potential. I’ve worked with clubs and venues for decades, and honestly, this place deserves better promoters and entertainment managers to do it justice.

I've been hiring Big Penny Social for the Walthamstow Flea Market for the past five years, and it's always been a fantastic experience. The staff and management are incredibly helpful and accommodating, ensuring every event runs smoothly. The atmosphere is friendly, informal, and welcoming, creating a positive space for both traders and customers. It's a truly community-minded and creative venue, which makes it an absolute pleasure to host our events there. It truly feels like what was once called a 'Community Centre,' a hub for connection and creativity.

Today we went here for our staff social, the food was really good, much better than we expected. The staff were helpful, friendly and efficient. We was a large group and food came out timely and hot. We did the pub quiz and the host was really fun! I would really recommend this place and we will be back.

We got seated straight away, but after ordering, we had to wait 25 minutes, for one beer, a carton juice and a coke. We never got asked if we want to participate in the world record (that's the whole reason we were there for) and by the time we went, they were on round two and couldn't join. Quite disappointing experience. So we had our drinks and left.

Fun, exciting place for the whole family, which is odd to say about a place that serves all manner of delicious beers. But on the Sunday i was there, it was packed with kids and dogs and families (and others!) having a grand time. The pizza we had was delicious and the service was fast.

We were booked for a birthday party at the Walthamstow on Sea experience but, due to the weather, had to move inside Big Penny. The staff were brilliant in moving quickly to reserve an appropriate space for us (20 plus people) and making sure we had everything we needed. Absolutely excellent service and ended up being a brilliant day.
