Note: This rating is for the customer service I received, not the quality of the cake.
I'm just home from picking up my birthday cake from Big Sugar Bakeshop in Studio City. When I arrived, the woman working the counter was on the phone taking an order. As I patiently waited, I surveyed the display because, in addition to picking up my cake, I planned to purchase some vegan and gluten-free cupcakes because they are SO GOOD!
After a few minutes, the woman behind the counter gave me the just a moment" nod, which was fine. It's Saturday, my birthday is tomorrow, and I'm in no hurry. I continued to wait.
About 5 minutes in, another woman enters the shop. Within 30 seconds, a man emerges from the back of the shop and offers this woman assistance. I quickly state that I've been waiting and receive blank stare. After a beat, I say "do you want to assist me?" He hesitates, then offers assistance.
Now, I realize that not everything is motivated by race, but it's important to note that I'm Black, and the woman that entered the shop after me is not. It's as if I was invisible, and this sort of treatment always feel shitty, even more so when you're picking up your birthday cake.
Big Sugar Bakeshop is one of my favorites. They missed out on an additional sale today, and most likely repeat patronage from me.
