The Best Restaurants in Portland, Oregon’s North Tabor Neighborhood | Eater Portland

"Served alongside giant jojos and gravy-drowned mashed potatoes, Alabama-style chicken is the headliner at this laidback, Southern food spot from Portland culinary legend Ben Bettinger. Available grilled or fried, the juicy house chicken starts off with a zesty Fresno pepper marinade before hitting the smoker, basted in Big’s “white gold” barbecue sauce. Dry spice-tossed wings and chicken sandwiches round out the menu, but really, it’s about the straight-up smoked birds. Grab a combo meal or plate to get the chicken with several sides for a full spread." - Zoe Baillargeon

Where to Find Fried Chicken and Jojos in Portland | Eater Portland

"With counter service locations on both sides of the greater Portland area, Big’s Chicken is known for its smoked Alabama-style chicken with “white gold” barbecue sauce, a tangy mayo-based condiment. Both spots also fry chicken thighs and jojos; one noteworthy menu development, available at happy hour, are the plates of jojos and shredded smoked chicken, smothered in creole gravy, and garnished with green onion, cotija, and white gold sauce." - Rebecca Roland

Big’s Chicken Is Coming Back to Portland Proper - Eater Portland

"Big’s Chicken is a restaurant known for its Alabama-style barbecue birds, originally opened in April 2017 on NE Glisan in Portland after gaining popularity as the Five Napkin Chicken pop-up. It was established by the team behind Laurelhurst Market. The restaurant offered smoked-and-grilled chickens with a white Alabama-style barbecue sauce and jojos. However, it suffered a fire in the summer of 2017, causing it to close. It later reopened in Beaverton in 2018, continuing to serve its popular smoked chicken, pickles, and jojos. Big's Chicken is now returning to NE Glisan in Portland, moving into The Hutch tavern space, with a second location that will have 60 seats, a full liquor license, and the same menu as its Beaverton location." - Brooke Jackson-Glidden

Google
The thing that stuck out the most at this establishment was the decor, the seasoning, presentation, and crunch of the food. I ordered the fried chicken sandwich a la carte, which is nice because I’m not big on jo-jo fries. The Sammie had a great crunch to it and it tasted amazing with the white gold and Fresno sauce on it. I like that they don’t drench the friend chicken in it and turn it soggy. It allows the chicken to be crunchy then with the pickles it’s on it makes it more crunchy. The potato bun was soft and pair great with everything. Instead of fries I got a 6 piece of their wings and they did not disappoint. They smoke, then fry them and cover them in dry spice. They’re crunchy and taste very flavorful. I wish I would gotten 12. It wasn’t enough food that I went and ordered some of the fried Mac n cheese bites. Once again crunchy they blended nicely with the zesty ranch and Fresno sauce, Cheesy as well and they brought at the perfect temp not overly hot. My girl friend ordered the PDX Hot Chicken sammie. HEADS UP the heat will catch up as you eat the sandwich. It’s not super hot, I give it a 6 out of 10, with a 10 being super hot. The zesty ranch and maple sarat gat sauce pair perfectly with the chicken thigh and remains, you guessed it, crunchy. Then you put it in between two slices of Texas toast and you get a great tasting sammie that’ll get you breathing and sweating a little. The price is fair and I don’t think too expensive. The vibe of the restaurant is fantastic and the decor is cool. The customer service was great too, which is better than most places these days. Bigs is easy to find and Parking is easy as well.

Google
Really good, insanely fast, the fresh cucumber pickles were a great little side for the wings. Currently eating "keto-ish" the fried dry rub wings seemed safe enough. Really great. Good as a wing gets. Not cheap but not expensive either. Getting something to eat while my wife has surgery across the street. She was starving and will be upset when she finds out. I can't eat the chicken for her... Or did I? I ate the chicken for her. Good deeds, great chicken.

Google
The flavors would get this place four stars, but I have some gripes. I got the veggie bowl, which was very tasty (also very vinegary, if that’s not for you beware). I added the fried chicken and was surprised that it’s breaded like a chicken patty instead of the classic big breading style. My biggest gripe was the portion of the sides for the price. I got a small mashed potato for $4.50, figuring it would still be a decent portion at that price. Not so much. They gave me an equal portion of gravy lol. And you get 4 small pancakes for the grilled corn cakes at $6.95. And they were…spicy? Very odd flavor choice. The veggie bowl *was* a good portion though. And as I said, it was all so tasty! I just know other spots in town that have better prices with just as good of food.

Google
Late dinner Chicken was really good but I was in heaven with the potato wedges! The service was really friendly. I want to go back just to get the carbs hahaha

Google
Not my favorite type of chicken but I respect what it was. The dry rub seasoning was probably the reason it felt salty but definitely is probably just the style of chicken it is. Very flavorful and just the right amount of spice. Would I come back probably, maybe for a burger to try it out. Would I recommend, yes cause you might like it more than me. Definitely worth a try.

Google
I got the veggie bowl with a fried egg. The broccoli was cooked and seasoned perfectly, better than I've ever had. The dish was quite spicy but not overwhelmingly so. Service was extremely friendly! The atmosphere is very chill and retro. Vintage newsprint from the 70s, with little comments written in cursive by people of the time, are displayed on the bar counter and complemented by good music from the 70s. The music wasn't loud and the restaurant was very peaceful. A great place to relax for lunch. Quite a lot of vegetarian options even though it's a chicken restaurant.

Google
Our favorite wing spot in Portland! This is our go to wing spot, and they always come out piping hot! Try out the Fresno and White Gold sauces. The jojos are pretty good too, and banana pudding is always a nice treat after the heavily spiced wings!

Delicious moist Fried chicken, with a little kick to it! And dirty rice was tasty, also with a little heat spice. Friendly employees. Highly recommend!

Yelp
This place has a lot of great stuff, but once I had the Big Dirty, I was hooked. None of the other stuff on the menu matters anymore. It's the dish I crave when I'm in town and make a point to come here to get my fix. Now that the Beaverton location is closed, I have to go downtown now. An inconvenience to be sure, but still worth it! The white gold sauce is amazing and even though the Big Dirty comes with a generous helping, I have to add more. This is probably awful for my waistline but it's just too good to pass up. It's best when it's fresh from the restaurant because the Jojos are still crispy, but getting it delivered isn't bad either if you're in their coverage area. Now if only I can find anything close to this in Atlanta...

Yelp
This place is amazing! Wings are my go to but decide to get a salad this time and it's delicious Service is always quick too so I'm never sitting too long.

Yelp
Fried chicken sandwich was actually so good. Honestly could have been the best chicken sandwich I've had. The spice and fry was perfect and the chicken was very juicy too. It was messy af but I didn't care because it was so tasty. Somehow a pickle got on top of my sandwich but who cares. Service was good and friendly. They also got our orders out relatively quick. Inside was rustic and homey. There was cool wooden decor and I like the vibe. Good place to watch football. Definitely check this place out.

Yelp
Big's know chicken. Alabama style means so guud. Perfectly fried, juicy tender center. Fried Broccoli with Pimento Cheese Spread ~ order the large. So guud. JoJos ~ order the large. Seasoned & fried so guud. A couple easy drinking beers on tap is all you need. The focus here is chicken. Classic southern decor, friendly southern hospitality and southern style menu makes this shop 5 stars. Roll Tide!

Yelp
Went here for wing week. The wing week special was loaded wings. I thought the regular wings and jojo's stood out. Nice ambiance and big screen TVs playing Oregon football. Good times, check it out

Yelp
I wish I could leave a proper review of this place and rave about the food, but unfortunately, we were stripped of that opportunity. This NEGATIVE review is based solely on TERRIBLE first impressions and a RUDE employee. My husband and I were eager to come here during the Portland Sandwich Week as we heard great things about their sandwich. We saw on Yelp that there was outdoor seating and decided to bring the pups out with us on a beautiful Saturday morning. We got there ahead of time and waited for Big's Chicken to open. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by a disgruntled employee who bluntly told us that dogs weren't allowed inside and that we had to leave. PERIOD. I asked him if they would be setting up the tables outside and he said that they'll start setting it up during the spring. And that was the end of that conversation. OK??? We left CONFUSED and highly OFFENDED. I would never support a business with employees who aren't welcoming. Maybe he woke up on the wrong side of the bed. Maybe he was sick and tired of Portland Sandwich Week. Who knows? I only wish he welcomed us as paying customers and offered us an alternative like OH I DON'T KNOW ??? MAYBE ORDERING FOOD AND TAKING IT TO GO? Instead, he just kicked us out!! BOO! DO BETTER!

Tiffany B.

Yelp
Was very disappointed, not flavor, greasy, just pretty much no flavor, and my friends chicken sandwich was RAW
google avatar

Samyoul S.

Yelp
Great flavors and the jojo's are ridiculous. Only thing was a smaller chicken breast for a 15 dollar sandwich. But that's okay with the awesome sauces and sides. Service was amazing! Super friendly.
google avatar

Jennifer L.

Yelp
If you're not into spicy at all I can't recommend this place because even the basic chicken sandwich had some kick, and I wasn't the only one who thought so. Which means the spicy ones are very spicy. The "fries" are giant potato wedges that are quite enjoyable. Although it does make the loaded ones a bit difficult to eat, so I'd prefer just regular then so I can dip them. The salads were kind of meh for me, but I absolutely loved the cornbread pancakes. So much that this is going to be a thing I'll need to do more often now. The chicken itself was really good and crispy and for sure had flavor. It's a good place for some spicy chicken when you're in the mood.
google avatar

Ka'ala L.

Yelp
The chicken here is always crispy and tender. It is always a hard toss up to choose between the chicken sandwich or the the veggie bowl, with the added chicken. The sauces they make in house compliment them both.
google avatar

Nina O.

Yelp
Best wings ive had in a while! Usually when I eat wings I need to drown them in sauce so they can have flavor but no sauce needed! The breading is super flavorful and a little spicy. The salad was very good too!! The lady that took our order was very kind and answered all of our questions. The tables were clean, the music wasnt too loud and the bathrooms were very clean and decorated nicely. 10/10 experience! If I lived here this would be a regular spot for me :)
google avatar

Yelp
I walked in and the music was playing on the speakers was 1970s R&B. Every sound took me back to a very cool time in my life. So the vibe was right. The ambiance was old farm house bar with some chic. It was as if someone went out of their way to create a rustic look. It worked in this instance. The look fits the area it's in. I ordered take out so my interaction with the staff was limited. From that small interaction I was satisfied with the service level. Now to the chicken. I order the whole bird fried. The presentation on opening the containers was good, all the pieces were laid in the container with care and skin side up facing the opening. They even put the fried skin in the container that fell off during cooking. The fried skin had a consistency of hard fried pork skins, but spicy. The skin on the chicken was a slightly softer than the pieces that were not attached. The chicken was spicy. It was a blend of hot and spicy. It was my first time trying chicken like this. I would give this chicken a 4 star for the flavor. They get 4 stars for keeping the chicken moist after frying. Great job.

Yelp
Big flavor, delicious food! Fried wings are crisp outside and juicy inside, just how I like them. The tips are left on. Fried M&C bites - nice, 2-bite treat. Not too much cheese flavor but nice crunch. Loaded Jojos - get the gravy on the side for delivery so it stays fresh and not soggy. Loaded up with chicken, gravy, white/gold sauces, etc. Always a great delivery experience .... Nothing bad so far!

Yelp
Bit's Chicken has been on my list of restaurants to visit because I am a fried chicken fan. The vibe - local, organic, homemade, and a throw back vintage feel in the decor of the restaurant. It was quiet when we arrived, but I'm sure that's because it was on a Tuesday and just under an hour before their closing time at 9pm. The staff was friendly and welcomed us as we entered. This was our first time here and of course it was their reputation for fried chicken that brought us here. The order....full fried bird to go! We sat and relaxed while waiting. They had 70's R&B playing that had us singing and grooving. The bird itself. It had a great exterior crunch to the bite, but it wasn't the typical fried chicken I was expecting. It had a bit more texture like a Chicharrón, yet the taste was distinctly Cajun inspired. It took me back a moment but it was good!!! I took another bite. The meat was extremely moist and a nice all around flavor. Of course I finished my piece of chicken, with a smile. It hit the spot. While it wasn't what I expected, it delighted my senses and tastebuds. I will definitely pay another visit.

Yelp
Heard good things about this place so I decided it was time. Went on my birthday with the family so was hoping it would be great, But it was not to be. Food was out fast and it was hot and fresh... but it all lacked flavor, for $100 I expected it to taste better. Got the full bird meal with slaw and jojos some Mac n cheese bites which were actually delicious and a little dirty JoJo plate. The whole serve yourself soda station and silverware station is costing this place a star, also having to bus our own table while they want a tip is unacceptable. Interior was fine with a lot of old time relics and repurposed items. Anyway good day all!
google avatar

Yelp
Absolutely divine! The chicken breast sandwich was delicious as was the jerk chicken sandwich, it's very spicy . We loved the fries and black eyed pea salad! All very tasty! We will definitely go back when in the area!

Yelp
The happy hour hot brown and Little Dirty gave me hot brown. Would do it again fur sure
google avatar

Sara W.

Yelp
We got bigs chicken and I got the fried boneless chicken thighs meal. I also got an order of the fried Mac and cheese. The chicken and jojos were good but the mac and cheese was amazing. I would definitely recommend that. The place gave the vibes of a cool pizza place and a bar somehow. The service was good, we didn't stay long but everyone was nice.
google avatar

Maureen W.

Yelp
Food is great. Sandwiches kind of messy. Best wings I've had. Little dirty was good but a little salty.

Steve B.

Yelp
I have been a fan, pre-covid, until yesterday. The wings in my wing order were tiny and overcooked. My grilled chicken was cold, like it was cooked hours before I got it, and the Fresno chili sauce was not the norm. I would have been OK with my chicken, but changing the Fresno chili sauce hurt, and as you can see from my picture, I like your Fresno chili sauce. The neighborhood group is one of my FAVEs, but I.was let down. The Mac and cheese bites made me feel better though. Please put the buttermilk pie back on your delivery menu. Love y'all still.

Liv S.

Yelp
So good!!! the deep fried macaroni bites are to die for, and their pricing is very fair
google avatar

Jessica L.

Yelp
Went to location off of Glisan by the hospital. Street parking is available in the nearby neighborhood for free. Went during happy hour on a Thursday for early dinner which I didn't realize they offered that! Ordered the fried mac and cheese, 6 wings, and chicken thigh meal. Everything was cooked perfectly and very flavorful! I loved the fried mac and cheese bites!

Lori B.

Yelp
Best fried chicken I've had in the city and really nice staff too. Oh my gosh just get the biggest order you can get and enjoy.
google avatar

Joe M.

Yelp
Another great chicken spot that has become my go to is Big's! The space is pretty spread out and glad to see hours have extended recently. My go to has been the spicy-fried chicken sandwich with jo jo's. The portion is generous and can easily fill me up the rest of the day. I like that there are a variety of sauces to choose from. The very spicy sauce that is used for the spicy fried chicken packs a punch. I would definitely rank it as one of the hotter sauces this place has to offer. I am not usually a fan of mac and cheese fried balls in general. Usually it's just breading and mushy noodles with very little cheese flavor. Big's does it right and I truly think they make the best in town. They add just the right amount of breading and you can actually taste the cheesy goodness with each bite. Sure they are meant to be shared, but I would probably keep them to myself since they are so addicting. The staff is wonderful and service has always been prompt. I know when I visit I can always be sure I know I will leave a happy camper, cheers!

Yelp
The food was great! Ambiance was cool! Got the little dirty. Can't wait to try the rest of the menu.
google avatar

Jane H.

Yelp
The food was great as usual. Mac bites are dangerously good. The atmosphere has changed quite a bit since we were last in. Husband and I were greeted loudly as "bud". We were in for lunch and there was loud techno and punk playing. I don't know if they are trying to turn it into a bro bar or something but it was kind of off putting. I guess Bigs might be to go only for us from now on.
google avatar

Tom T.

Yelp
So , my thoughts . huh......well quite frankly the best fried chicken I have ever had. It's all about the smokey spice and crispness. Not very greasy , either. When you order the wings , you get winglets , not a whole wing , FYI. Whole chicken seems expensive , but so is crack cocaine . (I'm thinking about this chicken all day , man) Kinda stingy on parting out chicken pieces. No mix and match. Dirty rice is good. Draft beer on tap. And "one" cocktail ??? Bar seating and quite a few tables for families. No outside seating. To go orders were flying outta there. I don't know . $27 for a whole chicken ?? Am I being cheap ?
google avatar

Jacob D.

Yelp
Best in class. Good food, good service, good atmosphere. Family friendly. We love this place!
google avatar

Yelp
We had delivery from here... What we really wanted was those wings. Which of course they forgot. But we really wanted them so we had them come out again just for the wings... Totally worth it. The grilled chicken was tasty as well. Good option for delivery.
google avatar

Kevin M.

Yelp
Great wings! The atmosphere is friendly and comfortable. Highly recommended if you like chicken
google avatar

Miguel R.

Yelp
Great ambiance. Great and friendly customer service. My wife, brother in law, and I had the fried chicken sandwich, jerk chicken sandwich, and the dirty. Both chicken sandwiches had robust flavors. The jerk was fire if you like spicy. The dirty was unique with all it's combined ingredients. Mac n cheese bites were great.

Shaun T.

Yelp
DISGUSTING! You're gonna need a lot of sauces to digest this and even get it down. Gross gross gross
google avatar

Gia M.

Yelp
Lacked Ambiance...My husband stated it look like a rat hole in the restroom area. Plus the restaurant itself left something to be desired. The guy asking to take my order didn't seem to thrilled to be there and was very friendly. That really turned us off and we left prior to ordering.
google avatar

Tim T.

Yelp
I'm surprised by the reviews as both my wife and I would not return as it just wasn't our thing. I wanted to love it, I really did. She's a 1 and I'll go 2 as it's fried chicken. We had fried chicken covered in hard over cooked breading, dry, just so not great. The big salad was tossed in ranch and was fresh but was it the pickled Celery that made the whole thing just taste like a pickled salad? Once again not real good. Fried Broccoli was ok with some strange cheese sauce. My wife says everything tasted like it had a lot of vinegar, maybe if vinegar is your thing your like it here. Moscow mule not for me, enough lime juice in there? A cool place and we really wanted to like it but man our meal was just not good, not horrible, just not good. End on a positive, jo jos we're good.

Yelp
This is what Popeyes aspires to be. Perusing the options of home delivery when I discovered this spot. I have since ordered multiple times and it has become my favorite Fried Chicken in Portland. The fried chicken is excellent. It's everything I love about fried chicken: crispy, medium breading, breading has a slight kick, chicken is not fatty. But the goodness doesn't end there. The Dirty Rice (chicken sausage, trinity, and dry spice) and mashed potatoes with creole gravy is also excellent. The Little Dirty is probably better fresh versus when delivered. It's their Jo-Jo's(fried potato wedges) with chopped smoked chicken, creole gravy, cotija, green onions, Fresno & white gold sauce. I like that they offer a Big Family meal and include a big salad, but it's a pretty plain ranch salad. I also tried their Banana Puddin' with Nilla wafers & whipped cream. Yeah, you'll need to put some hours into burning calories after this meal, but it's worth it.

Rhonda B.

Yelp
When I went into the restaurant I was greater by young Wakara who had suggestions on their food saying l can answer any questions you might have. From there we're off n running! She set us up with the perfect meal. Guy's you have got to try the dirty rice, so good! I have a health issue that can dry me out & of course tonight it acted up. I went looking for something that would help get the chicken down & Riley went A, no, B no BUT C was off the charts yummy GRAVY! Nobody makes gravy like I do "but" when one rocks it, you just have to say something & hell yea, that's good! Thanks all, we really appreciated it, The Baileys

Yelp
My kids love it. I think it's okay. Thr Mac bites are tasty. The last time I ordered they left off a side which was a bit annoying but mistakes happen.

Yelp
Pleasantly surprised by this local chicken spot in NEP. I tried the roasted chicken, coleslaw, as well as the chicken sandwich and banana pudding. I had them go light on the sauce on the sandwich which was perfect, Portland burger joints tend to go heavy on the sauces and the protein gets lost in the overall taste. Having said that, it was just about perfect when I had them go light on the sauce. The bun is toasted which adds a smokiness and crunch to every bite. The Coleslaw was very creative and had a nice spice to it, don't sleep on the side item. I also had to have the banana pudding, it was perfectly sweetened and really well done. I did think it was a tad on the expensive side for the amount you get. All & All, I really liked this chicken spot and would return for sure, I would go light on the sauces in the sandwiches and get the slaw again, pass on the jojo's.

Yelp
Great service. Chicken sandwiches were delicious. Place for good joJos. Atmosphere was very inviting.

Yelp
I ordered delivery for lunch, so I can't really rate the service of the staff or the ambiance of the location. I also refrained from ordering "The Dirty" because I thought it might not hold up as well in delivery. That said, what I did order was prepared and delivered quickly, seemingly suffering no ill effects from the trip from kitchen to doorstep. I got the 6 piece fried wings, fried, and the fried mac & cheese bites. I generally like my fried chicken to have a bit more crunch but Big's wings had a good texture and held together well, the skin didn't just fall or peel off, trapping the moisture of the meat itself and carrying the seasonings and spices well. The smokiness comes through and balances nicely with the other flavors. There was a reasonable amount of substance to the wings as well, though I do kind of wish they served drumsticks instead of, or in addition to, wings, and/or that a quarter bird was an option, or even thighs on the bone. I started making my own Alabama white sauce and personally prefer mine a bit spicier rather than as vinegar-forward and tart. Big's white gold sauce is good though and I appreciate that it strikes a balance between the cooler ranch and hotter Fresno sauces. I'm not really into the fried mac & cheese bites. They're bland and really need the sauce to liven them up. The ranch has too much dill for my tastes so I leaned on the Fresno sauce, which is a right amount of spicy for this. It made me think a bit of chili jam. I think I'd prefer a more flavorful side of mac & cheese as a side rather than the bites as a shareable appetizer. They just seemed a bit too much like frozen mozzarella sticks in cube form. Next time I'll try the dirty rice or mashed potatoes, and maybe try the chicken grilled or on a sandwich.

Yelp
Big's chicken in my humble opinion is one of the bestest The chicken is juicy and delicious The vegetables are fresh and crunchy I really can't say enough good about it, if you are thinking about eating here, just do!! You won't regret your choice!

Yelp
Love the vibe in Big's on Glisan. Casual and chill with a game always on to watch or the Food Network. Grilled chicken sando is truly the best. White gold sauce is deliciously fabulous!

Yelp
Big disappointment, tiny chicken wings. I ordered the grilled thigh dinner and 6 wings. First, the wings: I ordered 6 fried wings, and to their credit, I was given 7 to compensate for the size, but for $1.50 per wing, I expect to get more than one bite out of each wing. The flavor was excellent, a little spicier than anticipated, but overall very good. The thigh dinner was very "ok". The flavor was there, but the chicken was dried out. The Jojo's were excellent, crispy yet pillowy, and the coleslaw was average to above average. I will likely return to give them a second chance, but I will probably pass on the caviar sized and priced wings. Both of the chicken items had all the flavor you could hope for, but the portion on the wings and the dryness of the chicken made it an overall lackluster experience for $25.

Joseph P.

Yelp
Big big chicken is a 1/2 a star considering the fact that the temperature of the food is so hot. It Burns my taste buds for any better food. I might want it and the beer taste like p***

Yelp
A great place to satisfy craving for either fried or grilled chicken! Relaxed environment and friendly staff helps the experience.

Yelp
Tried this place on a whim with my boyfriend as we were nearby and hungry and wanted to try something new. Didn't have any issues finding a place to park on the street. You walk in, order at the counter and they give you a number. We ordered fried mac and cheese bites, 6 piece wings and split the fried chicken sandwich. The mac and cheese bites came out first, they were good but I wouldn't order them again. The wings were decent size with great flavor. The sandwich had one of their sauces on it and it was also fantastic. The jojos were good but by the time we finished the wings and sandwich we were pretty full. Will definitely come back for more wings!!

What a great atmosphere. The guy back there is cooking like crazy. This other guys run around taking orders. He's got a great set of arms too. For you ladies there's some good looking people work here. And I just saw Hiedi named Jason from the hospital ordering food as well. I'm excited to do the fried broccoli and the fried mac & cheese balls.
