Birch and Barley

We had an amazing lunch today! The menu was fun to look through and the different flavor options were great. Our party had a steak sandwich, a couple hamburgers, and the fried chicken sandwich and it was all delicious!! Our server, Taylor, was very patient and friendly. She provided excellent service, checking in frequently and refilling drinks before we even had to ask. We will definitely be back!

My friend and I came here to have a nice evening chatting meal and we were so delighted by your Server Mia. She was so lovely and had so much knowledge about your menu (my friend had some food restrictions). She was so thoughtful and sweet and we just wanted to highlight her for her great attitude, kindness, knowledge, and overall thoughtfulness! Shes a rock star, I hope you guys cherish her!

Another great gem made of great people, food, taps, and drinks! Loved the friendly bartender and healthy options! They also had YaYa hazy on tap, so I left full and joyful!

The only place we consistently go in Pullman is Birch & Barley. And that’s saying something, because this town hands out five-star reviews like participation trophies. Most restaurants deserve three stars at best, because most Americans don’t really know what they’re eating anymore. It all tastes the same for a reason, it’s coming off the same SYSCO truck. Think about it. Have you ever had a fried cheese stick that truly blew your mind? Of course not. They’re engineered to be identical, shelf-stable, and forgettable. That’s the goal. Birch & Barley feels like the exception. I don’t know how much, if anything, they pull off a food-service truck, but whatever they’re doing, it doesn’t eat like it. The food is consistently good, and more importantly, it tastes intentional. What really sets them apart is the Cajun side of the menu. The “Rajun Cajun” pasta is a perfect example. It’s seasoned, not hot, more restrained, almost French in approach, not the heavy, gloppy, over-rich mess you usually get when pasta is mass-produced. Gumbo, étouffée shrimp/crawfish, and other are the dishes that push Birch & Barley over the top, not just in Pullman but in the entire Inland Northwest. Honestly, where else around here can you even find multiple Cajun dishes done right? Add to that consistently good service and a staff that actually greets you when you walk in the door, and you’ve got a place that earns its reputation rather than buying it in bulk. Birch & Barley isn’t just another five-star food rating it’s one of the few that actually deserves the rating.

Fabulous local vibe with spectacular patio. Food is farm to table and outstanding. Local wine and GF options. If Mia is your server, you are set!

One of the best meals I’ve had in a long time. My Old Fashioned was spectacular and the Bayou Catfish was out of this world! The mussels appetizer was also top tier. Highly recommend this place.

Best restaurant in Pullman! Great food, excellent atmosphere, and fantastic staff!

We had Deb’s wings, ribeye and lobster mac and cheese. The wings were excellent, really nice quality and tasty. The steaks were okay, they tasted great but were a little in the tough side. The two people that had the mac and cheese loved it. Everyone raves about the Bloody Marys, need to try those next time! The wait staff was very friendly and attentive too.

Was lucky to snag a seat on the patio during move in weekend. Great atmosphere, friendly service and delicious crab cake sandwich! Loved their fries! The burger was a tad overcooked (medium) . Would get something else next time. The tomato bisque is very creamy and flavorful. Thought there would be more cheese on the crostini. Was good for dipping. The beer and service were great!

The French Dip was "Ribbin' and a Dippin'" good! Crispy fires and smiles from the service! Good atmosphere and we will be back!!

I'm going to tell you very simply that the food is good, the ambience is nice and fairly unique and the service is great because they seem like they actually wanna help you and they show up at the perfect times Now what's a little bit odd is that this restaurant and three others Pretty much have the same exact menu which I don't really understand. Yes the food at each of them does taste a little bit different but why in such a small town have four restaurants that are basically the same? I'm gluten-free and dairy free so I did have a pretty limited selection because I also can't eat beef or seafood but what I had was fine. It did the job and filled me up but I wouldn't rave about it So, you might end up trying all four of these very similar restaurants even though they are not owned by the same person and figuring out which one you might like the best. None of them have amazing food. The food is good but not so much stuff that you would crave and really wanna go back for in the opinion of the three of us that visited all these restaurants But being such a small town, there's also not a lot of of other restaurants to choose from so... Not sure really what to tell you

Delicious! Wow, I guess someone had been hiding this from us! The menu had multiple options that were to my liking, which of course made it difficult to decide. I finally ordered the Turkey Club sandwich with the gumbo soup. The gumbo was soooo good! Turkey sandwich was also fantastic. Service was fast and efficient. Lots of choices for seating as the space is big s as bad open. When I asked how long they had been there, 11 years!! Wow!

I remember when this was the Ram Pub and it was full of college students drinking copious amounts of beer. It is now a much more refined eatery with a very tasty menu. I had the fish and chips and I was surprised that half my fish was cod but half my fish was catfish. It's not often you get catfish in the Pacific Northwest and I like to eat my catfish in the south. However, this catfish was scrumptious. The tables are nicely spread out. They have a number of four-person booths. The bar also has tables as well as a bar where you can sit and enjoy a great meal. Parking is in a good-sized lot. Definitely a place to re-visit.

We came here with a pretty large group so I was no expecting everyone to be served too quickly, but the food came out at a very timely manner. My friend got the grilled cheese and soup and it was very good. I got the quinoa bowl and found that even with the salsa it was pretty bland and there was just too much quinoa. The fries here are really good tho and the fry sauce is not too bad either. The staff was friendly and the Andies mints at the end were a good touch.

Super busy day and yet it went off without a hitch! Food was amazing. Reservation was available early. They even have a gluten free menu.

We ordered a Spinach and Articoke Dip as an appetizer. I ordered Sirloin Steak Combo with Mac and cheese. First of all the spinach and artichoke dip was soo good, so flavorful and cheesy. I would go back and order this again. The steak and Mac and cheese bites was good. Mashed potatoes were tasty. Their parking lot fills up pretty fast but luckily there is parking on the side street.

The service was absolutely outstanding, the food was okay and pricey for what it was (sandwiches and fries). The cocktail menu looked very enticing, so if there was a happy hour I'd try it again. Having a dog friendly patio is a huge draw.

Stopped for a quick bite & decided to try the catfish po boy. The service was quick & my server was super friendly. Food tasted really good, po boy had a lil spice to it but it was the perfect amount. Just wish there was more catfish on the sandwich. All in all good price great food. I would definitely come back if visiting again.

The food was great. I ordered the lobster mac and cheese and the flavor was good but I found a very long strand of hair all mixed in.

We've visited Birch&Barley on a few occasions and I can say with confidence that their food is good. It's a very nice and clean space, service is attentive and sweet, bar does a good job and overall quality is excellent. I would recommend going for lunch there and having a tomato soup - it was delicious! Drinks were amazing too, definitely try some of their craft cocktails!

I've only been to Pullman twice and made sure to stop here both times. Flavorful food, good variety, can't complain, everyone at the table was happy with their food

I ordered my food wrong, and had jalapeños on it, which are too spicy for me. When changed my order afterwards, the service was just phenomenal, and took care of things with no trouble.

I went to Pullman, WA for my daughter's graduation in Idaho. I wanted to find a place before leaving Albuquerque, NM. I felt it was a hit or miss since I found them on yelp. I made a reservation for the family. I was so impressed with the food and our waitress was very informative and courteous. Best food ever! Appetizers awesome. The ambiance excellent. We enjoyed it very much. I have no reason to return there since my daughter graduated but if you're there, it's great. Please make reservations! They are busy and popular.

This restaurant is an absolute local gem! The atmosphere was nice and quiet. Drinks and food menu were both fantastic The bartender was very helpful with local drink selections. 10 out of 10!

Had a nice relaxing lunch here. I recommend the lobster Mac & cheese. Excellent. Service was friendly and accommodating. Would definitely eat here again.

The Cougar gold mac and cheese is to die for! I loved it. The service was okay when ai had gone--nothing special. But the environment is very clean and very well decorated!

Outstanding! I took my out of town friend here to give her a Pullman dining experience, and she was so impressed! As always, I love the Cougar Gold Mac n cheese and steak sandwich! She was in love with her burger! Plenty of seating and parking! Quick service!

The whole team here is all in on great service and good food. We are in town for a golf trip and have our carnivore, versatile and vegan and Birch and Barley answered the call for every one. We've had the Birch Salmon, cooked excellent, etouffee - wonderful, prime rib - good job team, and the Quinoa bowl - she's still raving. So you get the picture.

We have been coming to Birch and Barley ever since we started visiting WSU. This place quickly became a capstone of our Pullman experience. While the menu is expansive and can seem intimidating at first, I've loved everything I've ordered here. From the lobster mac n 'cheese to the gumbo, everything is executed well and tastes delicious. Servings are generous, and many of the dishes are served with a side of fresh bread and butter. While I try something new on the menu each time I visit, I make sure to get an order of the fries and fry sauce (the fries pair well with everything). In addition to the excellent food, Birch and Barley's hospitality also sets it apart from other restaurants. The staff is friendly, and the cozy yet spacious dining room always feels welcoming. Highly recommend this spot anytime you're visiting the area.

Dined here while on a trip with to Pullman with my spouse and two teenage kids. Lots of options that you can't find at other places in town, food was good, and ambience is very relaxed as well.

Food was amazing. French dip was to die for. Service and Hospitality made the experience even better. Vibe of the place was great as well.

We have eaten here several times and it has been a steady downhill slide. Service and atmosphere are good but the food is lack luster. The poutine used to be a winner it is average now. The chicken and mushroom dish was so heavily covered in gravy it was almost inedible. The seafood gumbo was a fishy smelling grey bowl of gravy that lacked seafood. It was a poor choice. Skipping this place from Now on.

Came there with my husband and had a most amazing New York steak dinner. Highly recommend that if your in the Pullman Wa area, stop by. And hopefully you'll get Sarah as your waitress

One of my favorite places to eat in pullman! Such lovely staff and great food! I love the cozy interior and when it's nice out you can eat outside too :) I've only ever had good experiences here!

Wow, the Cougar Burger is what keeps bringing me back here! Fresh goods, so perfectly done. Really amazing and the staff is always super efficient and pleasant. I'll be returning to this place again and again over the next four years!!

Really inviting atmosphere. Clean, great service and really good food! Was in twin two days for my pup to go to WSU, and we eat three times here Will go back for sure!

This restaurant near the college. Good prices. We had pork chop, steak and tomato soup. It was tasty. I really wanted the hamburger, but it was a 1/2 pounder and looked very big. I wish they had a smaller version. They gave military discount.

You would think, for a restaurant that has been dealing with graduation weekends for quite some time, that they would have their staff all on the same page for reservations. Alas, that is not what I came across. I called 4 months before commencement weekend to ask about reservations, to which I was informed to call one month prior. If commencement is on May 6th, it would make sense that one month prior is April 6th. I called today, 15 minutes after they opened, and was informed that they started taking reservations on April 5th and were already booked up. When I told the person on the phone that was not what I was told, she just repeated herself as if that would change the situation. Of course, I did not expect her to make exceptions, but I did expect her to at least address the severe miscommunication. I tried to look on their website to see if there was a way I could email them about the situation, but all that was offered was a phone number and social media - so I am taking to Yelp to inform not just the management team but others of the subpar service. I will not return to Birch & Barley and I sure won't recommend it to friends and family either.

Great spot for drinks and good food. Happy hour is a great deal as well. Outdoor patio, bar area and another dining area make for a lively place with a good selection of craft brews. We had the burger, the lobster mac, artichoke dip, and wings. Wings were filling and delicious. Everything was good in fact. We'd will return to try the steaks. One of the better options in Pullman hands down.

Food was delicious, especially the Pickle Chowder and Tomato Bisque Soup. Service was excellent, Hannah was awesome! Food: pickle chowder with po boy with shrimp. All super interesting and delicious. Tomato bisque soup with tiny grilled cheese. Awesome. Drinks: Bloody Mary was made to perfection, not too spicy, as I asked. Beer choices good. I highly recommend stopping by for a delicious, fresh meal!

One star for customer service... Looked online and it showed they closed at 9pm. Showed up and the door said they closed at 9pm. We arrived at 805pm. We were told "I'm sorry, but we stop seating at 8pm." I said "but everything says you close at 9pm, why would you turn customers away before closing". She said they actually close at 8pm but it's not posted anywhere. I worked in restaurants for years in both front and back of house. We sat people until closing time. We built it into the employee schedules to do that. To stop seating an hour early and not have that posted anywhere is ridiculous and unprofessional. Called and spoke to who said they were the GM. Extremely rude and extremely unprofessional as well. Have eaten here often, will not be back.

So I had to go to a meeting in Pullman after work and wanted to find a place to grab dinner. Having our pup with us, I looked for a dog-friendly place and found Birch & Barley. It was a hot evening, but nice in the shade. They brought a water bowl for him and 2 micro-brews for us. A great place to stop and dine on the patio if you are in Pullman.

If I could leave 0 I definitely would. Arrived to the establishment at 8:10PM because the Google maps/listing says they close at 10PM. The 2 young lady host were very quick to tell me they were no longer accepting any more tables without greeting us. I asked what time did they stop seating for future reference and one stated they took their last table at 7:59PM. I asked what time they closed or was to-go an option and that was quickly met with "we're not taking anymore tables and we're closed now". So as we were trying to say thank you and to wish a great evening I was rudely interrupted with one of the host telling me to have a great night multiple times and being very dismissive and rude.

I would be more critical if the prices were higher, but as it is, we had a great experience at dinner last night. We each ordered the ribeye, and all three were cooked perfectly to order. The fat was rendered beautifully and the seasoning was spot on. It's been several years since I *haven't* been disappointed by a restaurant steak, but the steak at B&B was terrific. The sides were straight-forward, but cooked and seasoned well. I also ordered a cup of gumbo and a side salad to share. The gumbo was good - hearty and meaty - but leaning toward bland (I really only ordered it to compare it to what I've been tinkering to make at home). Still, tasty enough to not regret ordering it. The house salad was the dependable roughage that we expected. The portion sizes of everything were spot-on. We each ended with pondering our last two bites; whether we should pack the last bite to take home or finish very full; we chose the latter. Service was attentive and kind, with a touch of personality that helped to make the evening memorable. The dining area was visually cozy. The atmosphere was comfortable. The service was busy but not so loud that it interfered with our conversation. Everything was clean and well maintained. I look forward to returning next time we are in town.

This place always has the same food and never refresh their menu. I also think it's expensive for not big portions. Their service is nothing special but their food is good.

Delicious food, although we wish portions were bigger. We enjoy the southwest chicken wrap with fries, mushroom chicken with rice and veggies, chicken salad, and pretzel appetizers with dips. Quick to come out, tasty, but yes, wishing for bigger portions.

This is the unsung hero of restaurants on the Palouse. I previously thought the place needed some updating and was a little harsh, but that was decor. Why am I so hard on that? I mean, I eat from taco trucks! The food itself is AWESOME. I've never had a bad meal here!

EVERYBODY working there is extremely nice! From the greeter to the server and all in-between. Food was delicious as well. Way more food options than anywhere else we went in Pullman. Nice seating inside and out. Don't miss this gem!

This a nice sit down restaurant and came here because it was next to the quality inn hotel. I loved the atmosphere it had and our server was nice. The restaurant was nice and clean and didn't have a wait to be seated. We even arrived at 6:30pm. The wait time for our food wasn't too long either. Micah had the fish and chips and said they were tasty. The crab cakes were cooked to perfection and very good. My cheeseburger had a unique type of cheese to it and was super good! I like my burgers well done and not burnt. This tasted just right! Overall, I was happy with my experience and would definitely return here in the future.

Amazing food and great service. Always go for family weekend. The have great Bloody Mary's and their raging cajun pasta is the best!

We came here on a Sunday evening, and had an amazing meal in the dining area; the decor is rustic and the service is attentive & polite. I didn't try any of the beers or wines, but the food was perfect! My boyfriend said that the potatoes that came with his prime rib had a "slight celery taste," but "the meat was good." A discerning palate, indeed. I had the creole paella, and loved every bite of it!! Seriously, if you like seafood and great flavor, GET THIS! Overall, great food, great place, great staff, and the little mason jars they serve water in are super cute.

Birch and Barley is one of my favorite restaurants in Pullman. It is my go-to. I always order the Cougar Burger with Bacon. It is a cheeseburger with Cougar Gold Cheese and a toasted bun. If you have never had Cougar Gold Cheese, it is absolutely delicious. On this burger, it is perfection. It makes the average cheeseburger even better with its delicious and unique cheesy flavor. The fries are thicker, but still nicely crunchy. They are lightly seasoned, but flavorful. Great for dipping in ketchup! The other night I also ordered a side salad. I had ranch on top. The dressing comes on the side, so you can decide how much you want on top. Of course, I just dump it all on top instead of spreading things out evenly. Toppings are the usual croutons, cherry tomatoes, cheese, and cucumbers on top of greens. My favorite appetizer here is definitely the Golden Honey BBQ Birch Wings. Any of the flavors are delicious, but this is often the flavor we choose. It is not spicy and everyone can agree on it. The Buffalo Birch Wings flavor is spicy, but amazing. I would recommend that to those who like a kick. Wings come in bone-in or boneless. I always order boneless. So much easier to eat! Accessibility: This restaurant is mostly accessible. Although there is a ramp into the restaurant, there is no accessible washroom. The washroom in the restaurant portion has a larger stall, but no grab rails and it is up a set of stairs. There are both tables and chairs and booths. The chairs do NOT have arms. The bar has some high tables, too. It can get busy and noisy here but it should not be an issue. Lighting should not be an issue either. The tables are not too close together in the restaurant, a little tighter in the bar. Side note: A little before Thanksgiving last year and the Apple Cup, I took my parents out to Birch and Barley. My family and I are all huge Huskies fans. We all wore our purple and gold, my partner his crimson and grey. We were seated in the middle of the restaurant and everyone stared at us when we came in and sat down. We laughed. All in good fun! Go Dawgs!

While in town for a conference Birch & Barley was recommended by the hotel staff when I asked for a good steak location. Spot on recommendation. The restaurant was busy but I was warmly and promptly greeted. As a party of one an open space at the bar met my needs perfectly. Staff were friendly and efficient; as a former restaurant employee you can tell that the team here works well together and doesn't get phased by a heavy dinner rush. At their recommendation I converted my Rye Manhattan to an old fashioned and was not disappointed. They NY Strip with crumbled butter and blue cheese was well seasoned and cooked to desired temp. Seasonal spaghetti squash was on point and the garlic mashed were par for the course. Since I cannot find it on the East Coast a side of cougar gold mac and cheese was recommended and it was a great choice. The use of orecchiette was different and complimented the not too thick salty white sauce. A glass of house red blend was passable but a choice from the wine list may be a better bet if you have a more refined palate. The atmosphere is casual and the whiskey list extensive. If in the area and looking for a great meal stop here.

We were so impressed with this restaurant! The food ( we had 2 types of fish) was beyond excellent. This will become our first choice place to go out and eat, even though it is a 30 mile drive one way ... it is worth the drive! The staff were so friendly and helpful and we loved that 2 different people ( at least one was an owner) came by our table wanting to know our thoughts on their business... I love it when owners are so involved with their customers.. The ambience was so nice, quiet , comfortable and made us want to stay just a bit longer. Cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough .

This place has great food, I got the prime rib dip sandwich. Awesome. People were nice and they had great dessert. I like the style the place has. Wide open floors for staff to move but still a good amount of comfortable seating for guests. At least try the place once you live in or near Pullman. I'm planning on coming back.
