Austin Restaurant Birdie’s Moves to a Prix Fixe Menu, Plus More Food News for April 2025 | Eater Austin

"A James Beard-recognized East Side wine bar that recently switched to a prix-fixe-only tasting format to showcase seasonal foods while retaining its casual counter service. The $68 four-course menu rotates roughly every three weeks and blends new dishes with diner favorites; optional wine pairings and a caviar service are available, and vegetarian options can be requested. Expect thoughtfully prepared items like handmade pasta, minute steak with rotating vegetables (such as smoked cabbage), wine-friendly small plates like fried green tomatoes, and a memorable dessert of creamy soft serve drizzled in olive oil—plus after-dinner drinks from the beverage program. The spot is walk-in only with a modern dining room and shaded patios, often has a short line (minimal right when doors open), and posts service updates on Instagram." - Courtney E. Smith

Birdies is a nice chill spot for sure. Their drinks are on point and hit the spot. Plenty of decor to check out, a few games and some nice jams. Bartenders are great at what they do and very friendly! A great spot to check out for sure!!!

As someone who leaves honest reviews — both good and bad — I don’t take writing this lightly. I’ve been coming to Birdies for years. I grew up in Jacksonville, and this place used to be one of my favorite spots. But after the way I was treated during my most recent visit, I’m completely done with this bar. The service was terrible from the moment I arrived. It took forever to get a drink, and the bartenders seemed more interested in socializing than actually helping customers. But the real issue came at the end of the night. I went up to the bar well before last call — there were over 15 minutes left. I was standing directly in front of the bartender. She looked right at me, then deliberately skipped me and served two other parties down the bar. When she finally acknowledged me, I told her I wanted a drink — and instead of just making it, she immediately got nasty and said, “I’m not making anything else.” I told her she literally skipped me — which she did — and she got aggressive. At that point, I absolutely went off. I wasn’t rude for no reason — I was fed up with being treated like I didn’t matter. I’ve never had a bartender be that disrespectful and confrontational over something so simple. And instead of owning her mistake, she escalated even further and called security — because I asked for a drink I should’ve gotten in the first place. This wasn’t just bad service. It was a complete lack of professionalism and basic decency. I’ve supported Birdies for years, even after moving away. But this was the final straw. If you’re looking for a spot with good energy and staff that actually respects paying customers, look elsewhere. Birdies isn’t what it used to be — and clearly, they no longer care about the people who’ve been loyal from the beginning.

This is one of Jacksonville's hidden gems. Great service, pool table for fun. The BAR 🍸 is top notch, the mixologist prepared our drinks perfectly. Every team member I interacted with were professional and friendly. Cheers!!!!!

I showed up last night by far the most sober of my group. I was literally the designated driver. I let my group sit at the bar for a moment and then attended the bathroom, upon leaving the bathroom I was whisked away out the front door and forced the leave. The group I was with was all female and left alone while drunk. I fear there’s a date rape culture thriving here as they didn’t allow me to retrieve the girls that were my responsibility. Avoid at all costs.

I love this place. I’ve gone twice and both times I enjoy the vibe in there. I do recommend. They as well have a pool table. The place is also clean. The drinks are great and the bartender was amazing. I recommend trying the drinks in there menu. I love how it looks in there too.

I love the patio great for smokers. The drinks are great. DJ’s keep things lively. Sometimes the crowd is just a hit or miss.

Yelp
Great place to hang out. Bartenders are friendly. I haven't had a bad drink yet from here. They have a decent size patio as well.

Yelp
I've been coming to Birdies for years. They are definitely a amazing up-and-coming bar in Five Points. They often have fun events like during the Super Bowl as well as when the Jaguars playing in London they have amazing specials as well as celebrate pride parade in October. When you stop by and make sure to tell Cody I said hello. I've never had a bad experience here.

Yelp
Shoutout to the staff at Birdies for my very first visit for making me feel right at home. Entire staff was friendly and professional. My lucky day having a great choice of non alcoholic beverages. Interior and outdoor patio where I took part in an all vinyl music DJ event was comfortable and spacious. Looking forward to my next visit and exploring more of the cool scene in Five Points!

Yelp
Service was great and timely, wasn't busy at all , it was Tuesday afternoon so not expected to be busy , I really enjoyed it from the funky art to the mystery vending machine.

Yelp
This is my 2nd home. I love birdies - their staff is super talented and quick, and I've been coming so long I've made friends with the bar & security staff. Specials are def something to look out for - and most Friday nights, it turns into a bomb club to enjoy! They have events occasionally, and always have a movie playing. Birdies is love, birdies is home.

Yelp
good place, reasonable prices and alcohol is poured in glass , across the road everything is more expensive and longer and alcohol is in plastic
google avatar

Yelp
This is a "funky delic" dive bar - all good by the way. Really solid selection of draft beers local and non local but the best part of Birdies is their huge outdoor patio area with that "bourbon Street" long stretch of bar stools across the entrance where you are perfectly positioned to "porch" that tasty cold beer while enjoying the sidewalk people views that unfold before you! Cool choice for me to stop here first at Birdies to pregame for an Elite event - I ordered my very tasty Atlantic Beach Brewing Company Two Minutes IPA inside at the bar and settled outside into the perfect corner "street-view" barstool with that perfectly placed big fan above moving that hot Florida Summer Air! Birdies is a nice choice for brews with good outdoor patio action. Check it out!

Yelp
I am a big fan of dive bars like Birdies. You don't have to dress up or pregame a ton to show up here. During my first visit there were a few well dressed men and women, but the majority were wearing jeans and a shirt. Shorts and laid back is probably the style of choice. I pregamed quite a bit, but the drinks here aren't too expensive. You probably won't break the bank ordering a few rounds here. The best aspect of the bar is when they have a 90's music night and people get into the dancing. The dance floor is small and cramped and sometimes that is a positive. You can jump in a dance battle and show off your best gyration skills or grocery shopping skills. Don't know those? Mow the lawn or lean back then. The bathrooms aren't the cleanest and if they check on Friday nights I couldn't tell. They have some space out front to sit and smoke or get fresh air. They also have pool which can be fun. The atmosphere is really fun here and people are outgoing. I will be coming back.

Yelp
The bartenders are quick here, that's about the only positive I have for this bar. Granted, I've only been here after 10pm. There's a patio up front if you don't want to be cramped inside and a pool table towards the back by the restrooms which are almost always occupied. The music is okay although I don't listen to the new hits, it's still bumping. It's $5 to get in now.
google avatar

Yelp
Birdies was an interesting bar. With a mix of college kids to business people in full suits at midnight, I really wasn't sure what was happening most of the night. As you approach and walk in, there is security who checks ids. That immediately leads you into the outdoor area for smokers with some high top tables to put your drinks on. The music is playing outside along with a tv playing different shows in the background. Once you walk into the building, there is a large open area for dancing and mingling, then two bars. a full, large bar on the left, and a smaller, much more basic bar on the right. The music was a very diverse mix of everything from rock to hip hop, and 80s/90s to today's music. The beer prices were good, which makes it easier to spend the evening there without going broke. The place is not assuming at all, so it is more of a mix between a dive bar and a club. If a crowded, divey dance club with reasonable prices is your jam, check out Birdies. There will surely be something interesting going on around you to keep you interested for a while.

Yelp
It's Friday night and the Bumble crew is looking for something to do. This means, depending on how long the work week has been, we will either gussy up and find dresses, or slip into jeans and a flirty top. Either way, 4 out of 5 times you will find us tearing it up at Birdies. Early on in my getting to know the Jacksonville nightlife, I wandered into this fairly non-descript bar with a patio spilling out with bar goers and high top tables. It quickly became my go-to, my substitution for Orlando's I-spy (now known at The Patio). It's the place you want to end up in after a night of bar hopping. Or if you're in your 30s like me, it's your one stop shop. It starts with a thinner crowd and has inexpensive drinks all night long. There's not many bartenders, but the ones there certainly know how to wrangle a crowd. There's pool in the back room, your typical cramped dive bar bathrooms, and a solid dance floor in the middle. When I've been the DJ has played a solid mix of 80's dance hits, classic hip hop songs and modern trap sounds. I love love love their music. Even better than the strange decor and convenient placement of this place (smack in the center of 5 Points fun) is the parade of people that walk through it's doors. You will see a little bit of everything and everyone. It makes a typically sleepy Saturday night at the oh-everyone's-trying-to-seem-put-together Hoptinger's rooftop(while waiting an hour for flat beer - ok, it was just one time but still) across the way pale in comparison. Watch and be watched. Drink and dance. Breath in the night air and leave without spending too much. This place is reliable. Nostalgic. And brings in a crowd that is a true work of art.

Yelp
I had so much fun I really enjoyed myself looking forward to go again this weekend or next weekend and the bartenders nice
google avatar

Carly H.

Yelp
I'm ashamed/proud to say that I am a regular here. It's gotten to the point where bartenders recognize me. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is what it is. Living in Riverside, it's a lot of craft beer/wine bars and sometimes you want a liquor bevvy. And here's a place you can get that. There's also one pool table (I've never used it but it's there) and lots of outdoor seating. It's a little seedy, but the drinks are the cheapest in the area, hands down. It's also one of the few places to dance in Riverside, other than the Loft. After the Pearl shut down (RIP ) lots of the weekend dancing crew transitioned to Birdies. If you come on a weekend, it's packed, with people walking between the bars. But on week nights it's pretty tame and relaxed.
google avatar

Danielle G.

Yelp
My favorite place to dance in riverside! Saturday is the best night to go with DJ Brooks spinning and the best bartenders pouring. Get there early if you want to play on the pool table! After 9pm it gets too crowded to play and everyone's trying to walk by you to go to the bathroom. There is a $5 cover on the weekends, but if you get there before 10pm you can get a wristband that allows you to re enter anytime before midnight

Asd D.

Yelp
Bartender handed me the wrong debit card then the Bartender didn't give me my receipt when I bought one beer only. That one beer came out to be 20 dollars. Now I know why she didn't give me it. February 14, 2023.
google avatar

Lee L.

Yelp
Love birdies. When this place is busy it's busy. Best get there early and get drinks. It has two pool tables in the back, friendly staff, wild patrons, clean bathrooms and fairly priced drinks. Go towards the end of happy hour and stay onwards, during the weekend. Good music playing at all times and funky, drunk customers . They don't serve food so eat beforehand.
google avatar

Karla D.

Yelp
I would give it -10 stars because they served me a pepperoni hot pockets when they described it as food and charged me $4 for it. That's some bs!!
google avatar

Brian J.

Yelp
This bar has become anti gay. Wife, and I with sister in law I who is a lesbian we're treated poorly. Also the price differential from the REAL birdies is rap at the lowest point.
google avatar

Easton S.

Yelp
Really just a fun little spot. Couple of pool tables, smoking outside if that's your thing. Locals stop off point.
google avatar

Yelp
IF YOU ARE LIKE ME and constantly show up to Hawker's Asian Street Fare during a busy weekend dinner rush and need a spot nearby to chill during your 45-minute wait to be seated...this is the place for you. I love Birdies. This place just screams 'community," where you're welcomed in like an old friend and treated as such throughout. The Riverside district is clearly (especially among us Yeeps) one of the greatest parts of Jacksonville and Birdies definitely is a major contributor to that, in my opinion. The Scene: It's hip, but without that snobby-pretentious vibe. I love the covered patio, where my friends and I can enjoy our drinks and take in some good Riverside scenery and people watching. They don't try to be all "artsy" with the decor, it's just very clean, laid-back, and comfy. The pool table in the back also serves as a fun way to pass the time. The Sips: They had me at Bacardi Oakheart. This is one of the ONLY bars I've been to where they've had my most favorite rum behind the counter. Bacardi Oakheart Rum (think Captain Morgans but alot smoother) is my alcoholic libation crush. I'm not a beer drinker, but if that's your thing, then I'm happy to say that they have over 30 beers on tap, most of which are from local breweries (yay!). NOW...IF you've had one of "THOSE" days at the job where you leave wanting to strangle everyone in sight...ask for a drink called the "Trash Can." It's blue in color and has enough different alcohols in it to cure any and all homicidal tendencies. You're welcome. And So: No, they don't have a food menu...there's 100 restaurants within 5 blocks...why would they? Birdies is a great hangout spot, whether you're in the market for some alone time or out on the town with 'the besties." The bartenders are also wonderful here, my friends and I have never left feeling like we were "just customers." With 2 enthusiastic thumbs up I highly recommend birdies to one and all! Till next time, as always, SUPPORT your local eats and BARS, and SYOY!

Yelp
Birdies, formerly the Starlight Cafe [and the sign above the building still says so], is a great local hangout where you can get a good, strong drink for not a lot of dough, listen to some good, Indie music, hang out with the local hipsters, and drunkenly stare at the AMAZING mosaic on the side wall of the front porch. When this place was Starlight Cafe it was notoriously a little sketchy, a lot dirty, and full of very eclectic patrons. The scruff of Riverside. I still went there on a regular basis, but it was just a little grimy. Now, it hasn't lost all it's grime, and still rightfully holds the Dive Bar title... it's just that now it's like a girly dive bar. Fully of cute little knick knack's, fancy bathroom doors, and once again, the mind-blowing bird themed mosaic on the front porch. It's like a girly girl covered in tattoos and into punk rock [re]opened up the place. Oh wait. She did. This is a local hot spot. If you are looking for a cheap, good time then this is your place.

Autumn W.

Yelp
Cool hang out. Casual but interesting. The drinks are served cold and staff is friendly.
google avatar

Leah A.

Yelp
This place is cute little random hipster divey bar that apparently serves late night eats & excellent beer. We came here for a beer after dining across the street @ Pizza Italian. They had this amazing Belgian grapefruit beer ($5) that was served nice & cold and it really hit the spot. A must try! This is a smoker friendly bar as most places are in the 5 Points area & the vibe is pretty cool if looking for a unpretentious place with cool decor to grab a drink. People watching is great & you'll find a little bit of every kind here. :)
google avatar

Jon J.

Yelp
Fun place to grab a couple drinks. Nothing really special. A couple friends work up here so it's nice to see old faces. I like that they have a nice smoking patio. Drinks are to expensive. It's nice they sell beer and liquor. $3 buds which are my favorite.
google avatar

Brienne C.

Yelp
We can't help but end up here regularly. It's a bit of a dive, but is more eclectic than anything. Drink specials are reasonable. Pool tables in the back, dancing in the front, and a large porch outside complete the place. The one thing I love about it the most is the diversity of the crowd. All walks of life come through those doors, and it is really cool to see them all having a good time together.
google avatar

Kimesha O.

Yelp
My girlfriend's birthday dinner fell on a cold Saturday night. We'd just left the fine dining establishment that is River & Post. We wanted to dance and have a few drinks. A couple of girls in our group suggested Birdies. They'd said it was "fly". The security checks your ID (minus the pat down) and waves you on in. There was no cover charge nor dress code. The older DJ (presumably in his 50's) played all the hits (who knew imitation Dick Cheney would spin the Migos?). There was a good mixed crowd, mostly 20 somethings. Kind of crowded...cheap drinks...but we had a great time. Don't ever judge a DJ by his age!
google avatar

Erikka N.

Yelp
I like this place. It's so carefree and fun! During a humid night of Pokemon hunting, hubby and I decided to stop here and get a drink. The music was great and people were dancing. Did I mention this was a Tuesday night? So we were quickly served and grabbed a table. I loved the atmosphere in Birdies and the decor. There's a David Bowie tribute on the wall that's super cute. So there is a patio area outside(duh) and a a dance floor, bar, and pool table area inside. We ended up in Birdies again the following week. I think we've found a new watering hole.
google avatar

Cesar C.

Yelp
Drinks are good. Bar is friendly . DJ (some guy blue hat, older white guy, let's call him "DJ Request " played easy tunes. Dance floor was empty but me and handful of my friends came to see me while I visit from LA. Tupac's bday. Each of us asked him to play just one song . Short and rude "no". The next night was my party of about 25 plus , decided to not go back because of that. People are here to have fun, indulge them. Bouncers were cool too.
google avatar

Ashly P.

Yelp
Dive bar, very open minded bar. Nice people. Always dancing and great bar tenders! You will always meet new people. They have a photo booth and pool tables. There are seats outside and inside.

Brittaney B.

Yelp
i've been coming here for 7 years, but now days after all the new employees and changes, i really come for Ashley! she's such a good energy and no matter how busy she is she makes sure people have a smile and are taken care of.
google avatar

Troy E.

Yelp
Before beginning, I must admit that Birdies is not a bar for everyone! Some of my friends love this place while others not so much (and that's ok!). Personally, I love this place. It's the perfect place to end the night at. The DJ plays decent music and the bartenders are quite generous with their pours.
google avatar

Aneka S.

Yelp
I asked the dj to play a song. He told me that they are not a request line. I asked if he had any average white band, as he was doing a disco set, and he very rudely told me he didn't take requests. I again asked did he have any Average White Band, at all...I have never experienced a dj saying he would not have any requests. Ughhh
google avatar

Joe K.

Yelp
Birdies is the same place it was in the 90s but the name's changed. The layout is fairly atrocious with the tiny 1 1/2 seats inside and the odd empty dance floor/bar area. The bathroom is well, uh, it's pretty gross. The covered open seating is old and always shuffled around poorly. It's okay though because that is the look they are going for. If you want hipster hole in the wall chill hang out vibe, come here. It's not trying to fake it. They have great art on the walls and the bartenders are usually on point as long as you look cool enough. I spent my youth in Five Points and these new kids probably weren't born yet. But that's okay. It's their place now and that's how it feels at Birdies; like I don't belong. No hard feeling my dudes, I was super cool at that age too!
google avatar

Ibrahim S.

Yelp
I asked for Johnnie walker black and got red! When I came back and asked the batrender, he said 'oh, I ran out of black and poured you johnnie walker red and thought you'll be ok with it'. I also feel it's necessary to mention that there was barely anybody at the bar that day and he could have easily asked me before assuming.
google avatar

Julie A.

Yelp
A cute little intimate venue. There is a little performance area where live bands play, a few tables nearby so you can watch the band, and a pool table where you can pass the time. But it is hella smoky in here. Fortunately, they have plenty of outdoor seating if you want to escape from the choky smoky atmosphere inside and still jam out to the music. But this place is really small, so don't expect any huge bands to come through this way. It's mostly a chill out spot to lounge, relax, and spend a low-key evening with buddies.
google avatar

Jon C.

Yelp
When it comes to dive-ish locations in Jax this is one of my favorites. The large outdoor seating area is wonderful for a summer night whether you're just looking to relax, or enjoy the occasional live band that stops in. Lots of regulars here, so if you come by often you can bet on seeing familiar faces. It can get busy late night with the Five-Points crowd, but not so much that it isn't still enjoyable. The drinks were made well, and not over priced. Smoking is allowed so certainly something to keep in mind for you non smokers. Parking can be an issue, but of course if you've ever been to Five-Points you already know this. Nothing but street parking here. I would absolutely recommend this places to anyone who enjoys a low-key venue.
google avatar

Luis K.

Yelp
I went there with my wife and a friend after spending most of New Years Eve at a rooftop bar in Five Points. Drinks were cheap and the music was OK. We had a good time.
google avatar

Dan G.

Yelp
I was thirsty. Shots appeared. It was beautiful-- like a double rainbow. It was abrasive-- like a rabid unicorn. It was affordable-- like beans and potatoes. Yes. So much yes.
google avatar

Crystal L.

Yelp
Don't get wrong, this place has a beautiful mosaic and it's a lot cleaner than most Jacksonville dives, but unless you're with a large group, this isn't really the place to go with just one friend. The music was actually really bad the last time I went -- I'm used to punk or indie, but this time they were playing a lot of hip hop and it was literally too loud to even speak on the outside patio.
google avatar

Jordan M.

Yelp
Birdie's is the best dive bar in Riverside, bar none. River Dogs is great, but they don't serve liquor. Wall St. is its own kind of special, but it's smoky. Birdie's has the best of all worlds, with cheap prices and really bangin' theme nights. Mickey the bartender has become our favorite in the area, and she never hesitates to chill at our corner of the bar and chat. Don't expect craft cocktails, martinis or any other fluff -- this place is the nitty-gritty real deal, and their draft selection is pretty respectable, too.
google avatar

Sally K.

Yelp
So glad this place is now smoke free! Enjoying happy hour with a $3 beer on the patio after a long work day. And the patio is dog friendly! Zeus is having a blast!
google avatar

John P.

Yelp
..place is OK, the short bartender was an arse to my friend when asking the selection of the beers on tap. The place is not my cup of tea due to all the smoking/hipster/indie scene that I am not familiar with. Literally I stuck out like a sore thumb. the only highlight of the place was the bathroom with the beer capped walls...but I have been to better places in general.
google avatar

Sherry H.

Yelp
It's not too bad of a bar but I hate that the DJs treat you like you're nobody when you request something and they don't replay anybody's request Drinks are weak
google avatar

Stacy C.

Yelp
I love this bar. Very chill atmosphere and the staff are always incredibly nice. Drinks are cheap and the music is usually good or at least bearable/entertaining. Nice Outdoor seating area for smokers and furry sidekicks. This place stays busy in the evenings and is usually pretty quiet during the afternoon hours. Without a doubt, one of my favorite places.
google avatar

Robert G.

Yelp
My friend was treated unfairly on NYE 2017 at this establishment. She was mistreated because of her race. He skipped over her numerous times and did not make her drink. Will not come back to this bar unless this issue has been remedied.

Monkey B.

Yelp
My friend was refused by a bartender because of her racial background. I realize this isn't a reflection on Birdies as an establishment; however, the bartender who deliberately ignored my friend is employed there which is why i'm giving only 1 star. How do I know she was ignored because of her race? Because after 30 minutes of her standing directly in front of this bartender, waiting, she went to another friend who is of the same race as the bartender to get the drink and bartender was "johnny on the spot" with the drink. She was served almost immediately. I really liked Birdies and I always had a great time there before that night. It was one of my favorite places in Riverside. But I won't be back.
google avatar

Rachel M.

Yelp
It's totally OK that every time I've been here the ladies room smells like vomit, because there's a giant shark on the wall by the bar and the DJ is always some rando balding dude with a sweet music collection on his phone. Various bar patrons will talk to you like you've been friends for months, too, which is kind of amusing, because I don't know where much is in town and I have no idea what they're talking about a lot of the time. Everyone is very engaging, though. Not an ounce of pretension here and a cozy, quasi-hipster vibe.
google avatar

Tricia J.

Yelp
I'm 30-years-old. I was dragged here with a group of friends. I was sick. I wasn't drinking. I didn't even bother bringing my purse. They carded only me, not any of my friends, then kicked me out of the bar. I was in the wrong, legally, but reconsider whether it's worth it to pick unnecessary fights with your customers. We wouldnt have left after one round, for one, and we'll definitely never be back. If you like uptight, miserable bartenders, this is the place for you.
google avatar

Trina C.

Yelp
You want to play pool? Check. You want to dance and listen to dj? Check. You want to sit outside with a drink and socialize? Check. Want a good drink? Check. This is the place to go!!
