"Birria Kings, which already runs two successful mobile outposts in the South Bay, is adding a more permanent location to its domain and taking over the space that formerly housed ¡Salud! Tacos in National City at 2333 Highland Avenue. Known for its great take on Tijuana-style birria, characterized by using beef in lieu of the cuts of goat preferred in other regions of Mexico, the birria pros do regular pop-ups at local breweries and have trucks parked at 642 E Street and 635 Oxford Street which serve a menu based on the slow-cooked meat and its richly spiced consome including tacos, quesadillas, mulitas, tortas, and burritos. Other specialty items include birria ramen and 14-inch birria “pizza”. While the opening date for the National City restaurant hasn’t been announced yet, this outpost will reportedly offer beer along with its birria dishes and plans to be open daily with late night hours on weekends. Keep an eye on their Instagram page for more information." - Mario A. Cortez

Google
Awful. Just awful. These are the worst birria tacos and consomé I have ever tried! The meat wasn't even cut, I just got four chunks of hard dried meat in each of our tacos. The salsa, onion, and cilantro were non-existent. The consomé was extremely watered down and not worth it. The cook basically threw our food inside our bag to go. Look at the photos, horrible. Never returning ever again.

Google
Ordered the food off uber eats and they forgot my consome that i bought, didn’t give any sauce whatsoever. I got the birria questacos and it just seemed like they gave up, shells were cold and stale, while everything else was dry. Never again, save your money

Google
For $4.99 a taco you’d expect it to be good. The tortillas were hard almost like they’ve been left out over night. I ordered a side of fries and when I asked for ketchup they said they didn’t have any.

Google
The food was good! Small portions, in my opinion, but I did order two tacos and the consume. I will definitely be back for other menu items! The consume was delicious, and so were the tacos! I didn't like the spot atmosphere too much only cause it was awkward seats & the inside is all black gave an unfinished feeling. Regardless, I enjoyed the service and the food.

Google
Food was so salty and was cooked on a dirty grill…looks like transmission fluid. A waste of money never again

Google
Had the Birria Ramen for the first time and it forever changed my life. It was better than I could have ever imagined. My life is forever changed for the better.

Service was nothing special, No Welcomes or acknowledgments. The music was a little loud for me to hear the cashier so I had to keep leaning in and repeating myself. They have indoor and outdoor seating. I prefer regular height seats over stools but, that’s just my preference. The food was overpriced for the quantity and quality of it, once again THATS MY OPINION. They charge $1 for add on sour cream and BARELY PUT ANY SOUR CREAM ON IT🙄 DISAPPOINTED! You can’t see any type of sour cream in the picture🤦🏽‍♀️🤷🏽‍♀️ My food was pretty dry lots of meat and bean in my burrito which just wasn’t it for me, I like to be able to also taste the rice and tomato’s. Personally- I wouldn’t go back.

I didn't like the nachos and nachos wasn't all that great it's better at the Kobe swap meet. The atmosphere is dark inside they should turn the lights up. I would never go back there again I don't think Birria never eat that is way too greasy and it's not diabetic friendly is the grossest thing that came out of Mexican food that should have never been invented.

Yelp
The birria was okay. The food was prepared pretty fast so I appreciated that. The service was great. I would probably be back here due to their efficient service :)

Yelp
Dang. What the heck happened to this place? I frequent BK truck and TK in La Mesa. I was surprised as all heck to walk into National City's location and be greeted with a disgusting swarm of flies, a weird sulfuric smell, and just a general empty vibe. I ordered two tacos with no onions and my total was $10. I watched the girl prep the tacos pretty basically.. and realize she put onions on the top. She then "fingered" the birria tacos in an attempt to remove the onions.. which obv didn't work. My tacos looked like they were physically assaulted. The plate was a mess. Onions were still on the tacos and employees seemed more concerned with changing the YouTube channel and looking at their phones in the back then replacing the tacos. The birria tasted mid. It's not the flavorful birria that BK usually has.. I don't think I'll be back. I can't seem to justify wasting this kind of money on some mid tacos.

Yelp
DO NOT! I ordered DoorDash It's 08/01 - 11:00 am. Guys! Do not get food from here! My food had a fly. I called the store and a girl answered I asked her if I could please talk to a manager and she stated the manager wasn't in. I asked then asked to let me talk to someone in charge and she stated she was in charge. I then told her my food had a fly. She looked me up my order and asked me to send out the DoorDash out again. Do you think I would want to eat that now? She said I could get a refund just to go to the store. I asked her for her name so when I went it I wouldn't have to explain myself again and she said she couldn't provide me with her name for safety reasons. What safety reasons?

Yelp
I thought I was the only one with poor experience ordering from this location. I've been here 3 times and it's just been less than mediocre, lack luster of how birria should be cooked and served. Portions are very small, VERY small. On my last time giving them another try, was the one that set me to write a review. I ordered birria fries and mulitas. It barely and toppings nor fries. $15.99 for a handful of fries, a sprinkle of meat (which was touch and chewy not sure how that can happen) and the tiniest drizzle of sour cream. Mulita suppose to have cheese, mine barely had any it was basically a taco. Service was ok, they were kinda rude and the place looks like a fixer upper when you use cheap materials. I won't be coming back unfortunately.

Exhunter 2.

Yelp
The taco was a Joke and Consome was flavored water . Really and you charge people for this? Never gonna go there again.

Ezz E.

Yelp
Food: Consomé was cold and the tortillas were stale. The restroom : the toilet was full of pee all over the seat and on the wall . I checked the bathroom cleaning inspection log (which was located by the door and the last day filled was 8/13). I walked over to the front and told the cashier he just nodded and smiled . Nothing was done about the situation.

Yelp
Been here a few times and really wanted to love this place but every time I come, I'm reminded why I don't. It's honestly ok. For the name to be Birria, lm always expecting out of this world, fatty, flavorful, hearty birria. But it's not. It's basic, the consome is disappointing. It's watery, more like a soup. It was like dipping our slices in water. Consome should be coating, fatty, and flavorful. The meat itself didn't have flavor, very bland. I've had the ramen before too and that was ok, not worth the price. The only plus I can say is, it's a generous portion and the price for the pizza was only $23 and some change. I loved all the extras. So I did appreciate that. My kids loved the pizza itself but only because the concept was cool. Homemade birria is really where it's at.

Taura G.

Yelp
Still delicious with excellent service! They have great specials Tue, Wed, & Thu and the food is AWESOME! We ordered: 1 $15 Birria Pizza (Extra Large Flour Tortilla, Birria, & Cheese), Birria Torta $11, and Horchata drink. Pizzas are &15 on Thursdays and comes with a large container of consumé. They have a seating area inside for about 25-30 bar top dining tables. The whole restaurant is black inside. There is a nice mural of a traditional Mariachi man with a saying next to it about "Sigo...El Rey!" Today there was a bit of a wait but doesn't matter, because it is worth the wait. We will surely return! Thank you!

Crystal R.

Yelp
Well...... the tortilla under the birria pizza was raw raw so it was hard to eat it with the base of it being wobbly I eventually just ate the top part cuz the bottom was, well you know.. Also the ramen noodles werent great, I'm just particular when it comes to noodles. but the birria was lukewarm. The bathroom didn't have soap in the dispenser nor paper towels. Sorry. And there were a lot of flies.

Cinthyaa V.

Yelp
I ordered breakfast this morning, was craving some birria after a night out Very disappointed, I wish you guys can smell this thing I ordered birria en consome with tortillas on the side As I opened my food a BURNT SMELL came out of my consome It's 10 am so I'm assuming they pre heated YESTERDAYS food & it over boiled & still served it & sold it to me I'm not against boiling yesterdays food , but you guys literally burnt it & it has awful smell couldn't even eat it My first time here & wont be coming again!!!

Mario R.

Yelp
Food is delicious. wasn't immediately ready upon ordering, that's a good sign. The Birria taco with cheese was really good. Service is good. ask for your name, you are not number when your meal is ready. Amazing ambiance, they have their own jams playing on the speakers. I'm sitting beneath a speaker, it is loud. but bearable. I will return

Cherry M.

Yelp
The birria tacos, ramen, and birria pizza with consome is great! The workers are nice and attentive. The inside of the restaurant looks clean and not too loud. My go to when craving birria!

Sara M.

Yelp
Terrrrrible birria tacos! I don't know what kind of meat it was but 2 bites of some extremely tough unknown meat. I threw it away. Never again.

Benny J.

Yelp
It was just alright. Wasn't a bad flavor, and it was plentiful, but something was lacking. We also got birria tacos, and my partner liked them. Might try something different next time.

Gavin F.

Yelp
Painfully mediocre, very little meat in my tacos and soggy tortillas. Not very great for what it is

Nina S.

Yelp
Came around 11 am on a weekday to try birria tacos. Parking is limited. The taco place is LOUD. Club loud. Cashier may not be able to properly understand you so be ready to repeat yourself and wait to socialize after leaving. Quesobirria tacos: the star of the show, juicy, great beef portion compared to the other tacos, though a little soggy to eat cleanly Consume: the birria tacos are PLENTY juicy without this so I would skip Asada taco: a little dry and chewy Al pastor: tender with a decent flavor Horchata: a little chalky Red sauce: a little spicy and also thin consistency Green sauce: very lime forward Service member discount: was nice! Brought the bill down from $28 to $23. Overall I'd just go for the store's namesake, it's a great indulgent bite.

Yelp
We were visiting from out of town and were craving some late night birria tacos. Their reviews on yelp were saturated with the birria pizza so we just had to try it! It did not disappoint. The consome(broth) was delicious. The only thing I wished was that they gave us 2 consomes, one for the tacos and one for the pizza because they only gave us 1 for both items. The "pizza" is just a big flour tortilla with meat and cheese inside. We got it with cilantro and onions for more flavor. Definitely delicious and wish I could order it again back home!

Alex S.

Yelp
The quesadilla is the best! Plenty of birria, melted cheese between toasted tortilla. Yumm! I also like the keto taco (who doesn't like fried cheese?) and the normal taco is good as well. I'd like to try the ramen and the pizza some day; they look pretty epic. Not many places have good red and green salsa (usually one is good and the other is meh or bad), but here, both salsas are good and have a slight kick to them! Which is how salsas are supposed to be. They don't have many parking spots of their own, but it's pretty easy to find street parking around. But even with the limited parking spots, I've never had to look for street parking.

Lilliana C.

Yelp
I think this birria is very delicious the meat was not dry , every bite of my taco was juicy and I like that they put the purple onion , the mulita was also very buttery delicious , my husband had the ramen im not a fan of the ramen , but the noddles weren't to thick and the broth was so good , we had a flan for dessert and it was creamy not to wet or dry it was perfect, I'm definitely coming back to this location in National City , I give this place a good rating because of how authentic it was , I love cooking birria and I give them a high five

Yadi E.

Yelp
I can't explain it but the food truck for Birria Kings is 100x better than this sit down place. The quesadillas don't come with consume, whereas the food truck does, and the taste, even the salsas aren't as flavorful as the food truck. We had the quesadillas and they were alright. Took it home to crisp up in the air fryer and I enjoyed it more! Not bad but not the best! Also felt betrayed that the menu screen advertised beers/ micheladas but the cashier said they don't sell them.?.

Tamela E.

Yelp
Unfortunately if I had read the reviews first we would have made different choices for dinner. Food taste was good but our family did get issues with stomachs and honestly believe it could related to hand washing practices and basic sanitation issues. Unfortunately we won't return but do hope they use this information to make some smart changes regarding these issues. Flavor profile 4 stars but due to illness only one star. We still have sick member of family. I will remember if a place looks unbecoming outside this will more than likely the same inside.

Zam F.

Yelp
O man where do I start. I've been going to this place for a while now. About 2 weeks I went with my husband, he walked over to the liquor store to buy a drink and when he came back he said, " Yeah you may want to think twice before coming here again". I am very picky with restaurants when it comes to sanitation. I've had a gut feeling about Birria Kings because I used to buy from them when they had their lunch truck in Palomar st, had a bad experience and never went back. I love their tacos so I decided to give them a second chance. WRONG as soon as I waked over to the liquor store, there was standing water right outside the door by the kitchen. The SMELL was insane to say the least. In the pictures you will see the water, the meat just sitting on the tables, the fly trap, the hole in the door where the flys can enter the kitchen. I've read from previous reviews that you guys have found flys on your food. You are correct the door has a hole and the flys are going in the kitchen, landing on the Birria while it's simmering. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE -- WHY DO YOU CALL YOURSELF THE BIRRIA KING ???? CLEAN YOUR PLACE UP, HAVE SOME RESPECT FOR YOUR CLIENTS

Kelly V.

Yelp
I ordered a carne asada burrito. It had very little meat, it was mostly stuffed with rice and beans, which I think is a cheat. The meat that was there was very gristly! The entire burrito was dry, no guacamole and had no flavor! This should have been much better for $13!

Chasy M.

Yelp

Yelp
Ordering was chaotic, took the guy forever to put the order in then he got it wrong still. Ordered a Quesa Birria, got a birria taco. It was good so I let it go. Ordered a side of rice and it tasted old, like rotten tomatoes or something. Was polite enough to tell the guy it tasted off, girl in the back got snappy "this is how we always make it." Well this isn't the first time I eat here but I assure you it's the first time the rice tastes awful. Threw it away. Won't be coming back thank you.

Rebecca M.

Yelp
First time trying it out. Been seeing their specials Monday thru Thursday and those are some good specials. I tried the Wednesday special birria ramen for $8. Delicious. Good portion. And have to give a shout out to Naomi. She was super nice and pleasant. First time and sure won't be my last. Thank you Naomi.

Helen Rhae V.

Yelp
I thank my bff and her fiancé for taking my boyfriend and I to this place! We love birria tacos so much that this place very much exceeded everything that we ordered! I think I can say that we all enjoyed our food because we had no left overs to take home hehe. I ordered the birria tacos, my boyfriend ordered the birria burrito, and we shared a birria ramen. If you plan on eating here, make sure you come with an empty stomach because it is pretty filling! The portions are definitely shareable! The aesthetics of this place was very dark because of the color of the walls. There were plenty of seats inside and it didn't seem to be that busy for a Saturday night. I'm not an SD local so idk how busy it normally gets, but this place is a must try!

Jocy C.

Yelp
I'M A HUGE FAN! One of my friends was visiting San Diego for a few days, so we met up for dinner. Trusty Yelp App found Birria Kings Street Tacos & Beer near National City area of San Diego, CA. According to their website, they now have 3 locations (2 in Chula Vista and 1 in National City). The National City location opened around December 2021. I tried their: - Birria Taco - MUST GET - Birria Ramen - NOM NOM NOM; I've tried Birria Ramen at 2 other places and this one here has been my favorite thus far - Carne Asada Fries - really fresh; fries were "crispy" I took a bite of my friend's KETO taco. NOM NOM NOM! FYI - the National City location, the specials include: - Taco Tuesdays - Wednesday Birria Ramen - Thursday Birria Pizza FYI - As of March 2022, they didn't have beer yet for Michelada. RUN RUN RUN!

Albert A.

Yelp
Everything we ordered was delicious took a Birria pizza to go along with Birria Ramen, and six of their Birria queda tacos. Service was good and the vibe and the restaurant was great. Everything was clean and they gave us a ton of sauces. Their Jamaica was perfect not too sweet. And they carry all of the Mexican soda varieties 10 out of 10 would definitely recommend. Looking forward to going back soon.

Patricia H.

Yelp
I have had birria tacos many times and these were excuse my French nasty. We flew in and we wanted to try so we placed our order. When it came we were in shock that it was $3 for 1 taco and you had to pay more for the consommé. We asked for the veggies on the side but they didn't include them. What we got was meat in a tortilla. It wasn't red or even looked like it was dipped, the broth was flavorless, as well as the meat. We are use to being asked if we want cheese double dipped but not here Each taco was $3.00 but they have a picture of 3 so we figured we were getting 6 in total. We had to do another order so we could have dinner. Well we went with McDonald's since we know how that taste. Disappointed that the tacos we really wanted was nothing like we expected and for California tacos.

Yelp
Horrible experience today with the Crepa vendor outside of Birria Kings. As a loyal customers to Birria Kings my wife and I finally got the chance to try to support the crepa vendor that sells outside of the establishment during the evening. As a local business owner I despise mediocre businesses that only see their services as an opportunity to get rich at the expense of their customers. Of course, money is a plus, but we need to focus on providing excellent customer service to the people that allow us to be in business. My wife and I got there and were really excited to support a local small business until we noticed the mediocre customer service they provide. There was a group of elder men standing in line in front of us who were unaware of what the vendor was selling so they asked the little vendor boy "Que venden? Tacos?" The kid didn't acknowledge the men and out of no where a random guy comes up and says "Gallo!!!" While cutting in front of the group of men, my wife and myself. The vendor boy then reply's "gallo!!" (Gallo = rooster -- a term men use in Mexico to salute one another out of respect). They had a small conversation while the group of guys who were in line (still confused) awaited an answer from the little vendor boy. Not once did the vendor boy acknowledge the group of men nor answer their questions. So they left. My wife then looked at me and said "wtf???". I told my wife "let's just get our crepas and leave." I walk up to the vendor boy and didn't get greeted at all. No acknowledgment. I tried to make a joke about his hat that said "we don't sell drugs" in Spanish. What I told him was "You don't sell drugs? That's what I came for!" And he just looks at me and says "naaaah". At this moment I knew this kid was one of those people who get a small opportunity and immediately start treating others like trash. I gave him the benefit of the doubt.... noticed he was cutting some strawberries so I didn't bother him.. a few minutes went by and he never looked up at us nor did he ask us if we were ready to order. I asked if he accepted Apple Pay and he said "only cash app and cash" in a very condescending way almost like he was bothered by our presence and questions. At this point my wife was in shock and told me "f*** this guy, why even support them." So we left. The fact that the boy was wearing a "Birria Kings" shirt makes me not want to buy anything from them either.

Jason O.

Yelp
Took 40 minutes to get 2 tacos and fries and hardly any customers. Only one person cooking and another manning the counter. Food overpriced (where isn't these days) and very average at best.

Joanne P.

Yelp
Finally!! Birria Kings has a brick & mortar here in National City! They still have their food truck operations (follow them on IG to get those locations & hours of operation). But, here they have their own bathroom! Lol Just opened on December 16, 2021 and I see that Micheladas will be on their menu soon. So, it sounds like they're just waiting for their license to serve beer. There's a tv that displays what's currently on the menu, what to expect soon, and the Birria Kings food trucks and Hibachi Kings. I ordered 2 birria quesatacos (because everything tastes better with cheese). Corn taco grilled with birria consommé, lined with melted cheese & filled with tender delicious shredded beef. Onions and cilantro are optional. The stewed beef is in hearty portions. I ordered a cup of consommé to sip in between my taco bites. Consommé is beef broth that's been simmered for hours typically dried chilies ( Guajillo, Pasilla- Ancho); tomatoes; onion; cumin; annato paste ( garlic, cinnamon, oregano, clove, all spice, annato). All of these ingredients along with the beef broth make a fragrant, soothing broth you can dip your tacos or quesadillas in. Or just even sip. I've had their birria ramen, while enjoying the fresh air at the food truck locations- and it hits the spot. Couldn't believe hubby ordered the Birria Fries this time around- and he overdid it. Wish the fries were fried up a bit more. At least the Birria portion didn't drown out the fries. Comes with Crema Mexicana and shredded cheese.

Ashton S.

Yelp
The broth and meat was very flavorful! Got my order very timely and quick, and the atmosphere was very casual and vibrant. Would go back for the birria pizza. Also, the chili oil is very delicious and spicy.

Doug A.

Yelp
The food is expensive but taste and quality is amazing. The Birria Ramen, Tacos, consome, and their pizza I highly recommend

Benita M.

Yelp
The food is good! My first time there... trying something different... had to wait a bit, but that's ok after we got our food we were not disappointed... flavorful and tasty.... Authentic taste... wakes up the tastebuds we did see a lot of folks coming in and picking up... that's the key to not waiting... dining in we waited a few minutes to get our order... all good tho...

Lester B.

Yelp
My word! Another pleasant visit to BIRRIA KINGS. Holy smokes, this joint is fire. Pizza, tacos, quesadillas, ramen, etc. all of tasty tender birria. Delicious and satisfying....I am not whistling dixie. Staff and service is always next level courteous & efficient. Space is immaculate & fresh. Make no mistake, some of the best grub in the South Bay. Run, don't walk to this joint immediately.

PRiscilla B.

Yelp
I ordered two tacos and Birria Ramen and the flavor really sucked too salty and the salsas are water down no flavor they literally one put one little lime... I remember going to the lonchera before and everything was way better

Kathem M.

Yelp
Very good food and service I would recommend them for any event that needs catering. The owner is very friendly and made lots of accommodation for our group

Sky G.

Yelp
Ripped a hole in my $80 jeans on a stray nail sticking out of the booth. Place had no napkins Tacos bomb af tho.

Arcy R.

Yelp
Mid. They got my order wrong and honestly, the meat was pretty flavorless. This was was super hyped and it was underwhelming.

Yesenia G.

Yelp
We went here because tacos el Gordo was packed and had long lines. We usually get our quesa taco's fix in Lake Elsinore. We realized that there was a long line here as well. Obviously long lines means good food. The food was good, we ordered quesa tacos, we expected them to be almost crunchy on the outside... like what we are used too; but they were actually very soft and on the greasier side. It would be nice if they had a meal like 2 quesa tacos and consome, they didn't; must purchase separately. We ordered 8 quesa tacos, 1 quesadilla, and a couple of consome's, couple of sodas; paid over $80. It did seem a bit pricey. The wait was a little on the long side after we ordered, again they did have a long line. Ambiance was ok, not enough seating for the customers that were waiting. All in all the food was good, could've had a little more taste and definitely better salsa. They did not have many options on drinks either. I would recommend it, if you are in the area and don't mind spending a little more money on soft quesa tacos. Definitely wouldn't go out of my way to drive over an hour to dine here.

Gina P.

Yelp
I'm writing a review because I was going to get these tacos on my way to work and I tried one and did not like it. I drove back to talk to them to get some money back they were un able to for some reason said I would get it in a few days on my card? Either way I reached out also to follow up and owner didn't get back to me. It's a waste of money the tacos have no flavor and service they can't speak English which you think they would since were in California?? Never going back

Evelyn E.

Yelp
Birria, rice, beans combo is my go to!!! Highly recommend 1 plate is $15 after tax but it's worth it

Sofia B.

Yelp
The smell once you go into the restaurant is amazing! It smells really good!. But i think the tacos are too TINY! and the birria needs a little more flavor however its not bad. The staff were friendly and the service was fast. We ordered 1 taco dorado very tiny ate in 2 bites and a quesabirria which was small also and lastly a birria ramen it was OK it was my 1st time trying it.

Give Me Some F.

Yelp
The tacos were good, but the place was a tad unhygienic. We seen the cashier handling money and cutting the radish without washing their hands. The lemonade also had a weird taste to it as if the lemons had gone bad. Not to mention, the restroom was dirty; toilet seat had urine on it with no paper toilet seat covers. The music was also a tad too loud, cashier couldn't hear us clearly.

Marie E.

Yelp
ITS FREEZING (30 degrees in an diego) MAKING A TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AND FOOD GETTING COLD fast. She said "she can't lock the door because it locks" after her first saying "of course" then "we'll I'll see what I can do" Clearly you could care less about your customers!!! And honestly the birria is trash && takes forever for something that is already made I waited 30 minutes now and there's 1 person in front of me that just got tacos. Definitely don't recommend.

Yelp
Ordered through Postmates. Never received a confirmation, good thing I called them to follow up so I ended up ordering through UberEats. I requested more sauce and hot sauce and radish and limes. Didn't get any , and none of our pizzas included the "house sauce" . Which is part of the order itself. Paper Receipt was marked off but didn't any of them . At least the food was 4/5

Yelp
First time coming here ; Instagram had me hooked. Ramen & Birria sounds like an amazing fusion , right?.... The location was sketchy & the color of the building is black . Which doesn't help make it look appealing. I ordered online and waited like 10 minutes for my food and then headed home . I ordered Birria ramen and a Birria taco. The container for the ramen looked stuffed, like it was on the verge of exploding. Maybe the ratio of noodles to birra wasn't quite right... I don't know. But , it was too full. First taste, way too salty! I don't know how they prepare the Birria and ramen noodles but somewhere along the way, they added too much salt. I added lemon to help diffuse the salt. It helped , but not much. The taco was okay. I gave 3 stars because the attempt to combine Birria and ramen was a good idea, but the over salted dish needs work.
