Essential Latinx Food Experiences in Los Angeles’s Boyle Heights District - AFAR

"This long-running, family-run spot—operating for about 50 years—specializes exclusively in time-honored birria (goat stew) made from a recipe over a century old brought by a family from Guadalajara; diners can choose shank, leg meat, or ribs as variations. The place is famously crowded (sometimes visited by Latin celebrities) and rounds out the meal with traditional grandmother-style desserts and a house hibiscus punch. It is available for pickup and outside dining." - Tim Chester

Google
Great birria at a great price. The menu is simple and centers around its birria and lamb cuts. I had the quesadilla, and the tenderness of the meat and the flavor of the tortilla stood out the most to me. It has a nice family ambiance with plenty of space. Definitely looking forward to coming back and trying a full bowl of the broth.

I personally have been coming to this birrieria since 1974 as a little boy with my parents. It's a very simple menu. With half, full, and mixed plates being served. Very authentic and tasty.

Google
Overall Max 4 star. Food was good specially being goat meat. I get there almost one hour before closing and felt the staff was in rush and didn't like it! They moved to seat near door then I noticed not being Hispanic causing little bit different attitude. They should provide both fork and spoon and maybe Xtera small plate for bones! The parking in the back in the Alley and front doesn't show that they are open! Kind of like it's for Mexican Elite! But overall definitely recommended to test but I set the right expectation with 4Star. Happy 2025

Google
I have been coming here for over 45 years. We always loved it, the lines & crowds always assured you the food would be great. Unfortunately the quality has gone way way down since they remodeled the dining area. There were no lines, no crowds, honestly the empty dining room made me question if I should leave. It really hurts to see it's not the same. Our food was cold, and tasted a bit dry, definitely not like the old days. The service was good. Very disappointing

Went on a Wednesday around 3pm and it was really empty. They really upgraded it from the last time we were there years ago. The place is much bigger and renovated. They have street parking or a lot behind the restaurant. They have a good happy hour and daily specials. Food as always was delicious and service was good too.

I went to visiting the city of Fairfax and I remember of the city of Boyle highs and there great food. Drove 38 minutes to find out that this restaurant have only one table by the rear of the restaurant facing the back parking lot. Which by the way was full so I park a block away. Best luck to you if you come by your self. Can’t opinion on the food didn’t have the chance to try it.

Google
Great service, Nice environment, although it was a bit hot inside. I love birria, but wasn't too impressed by the food here. Found it a bit bland for my own liking. I would come back again and give it another try. Maybe was an off day.

This is my second time visiting the place. Plenty of seating places, i was expecting a busier restaurant. Well I got there and someone approached us to get our drinks we ordered and never came. The second waiter approached and asked us if we were ready to order but we had no menu yet. We asked for our drinks again, she brought but then she did not come back to take our order. This third waiter approached and said we needed to order because there were people outside waiting. So I finally got to order from her. A few minutes later she came back saying we cannot keep ordering food because there was a limited time to dine in. There were about 4 tables available, what was she talking about? She constantly came to our table trying to remove the items. When I needed a refill on my coffee she never came back. So we got tired of waiting and we asked someone else to bring the check. Guess what? They brought it really quick. I regret having my friend from Texas visiting this place. Worst service ever. Birria not that good I had tried better with hand made tortillas. These people don't even have that.

Yelp
My go-to Birrieria in Los Angeles. I love bringing friends from out of town to this especially if they've never had it before. I'm very pleased with the recent renovations - it was a lot more crowded and smaller before. So spacious now! Limited parking behind restaurant.

Yelp
First and foremost, the parking is a MESS!!! We had to park at a tire shop and pay the man $10. We were told it was going to be a 30-45 minute wait to be seated. We were seated after 45 minutes and got our food pretty quick!! I got a Plato Surtido de Chivo and it came with 3 tortillas. The food came out hot and it was BUSSINNN!! I came on Father's Day which probably explains why it was so packed today. By the way, make sure to check in to get 10% off your order!! Took about 10 dollars off our order which paid for our parking, I guess. Overall, great food but the parking situation was a hassle. 4 stars!

Yelp
$8.50 for a quesobirria ????!! Are you kidding me???? Could I afford it? Yes Will I pay it? No way! Never I'll drive 3 minutes to another place where it's half the cost. Sorry business. I walked in and walked out

Yelp
Great Happy Hour from 230pm to 6pm and the tacos de Birria de res and de chivo are very good too
google avatar

Gustavo A.

Yelp
Excellent birria de chivo been eating here for the last 45 years, now I moved to Lancaster but every time I'm in LA I come here for lunch or take home, I highly recommend this place

Luis C.

Yelp
first time at this place tables are very close together. I was the manager for a different table he told me he was going to get the two tables together for four people but never put the tables together I asked the waitress for an old-fashioned drink she didn't speak English these people come to this country but I have to speak their language the manager came I asked her about the old-fashioned she told me to wait then the bartender came to take my order, the foo sucket the service was really bad, the music was so loud every five minutes it was a birthday with super loud music. first time and last time they never get another cent from me

Yelp
Authentic Birria Jalisco style. The meat is tender and some pieces have that crispy edge. Consomé (broth) is flavorful and not oily. Add lime, onions and cilantro to your liking. Tortillas are nice and hot. Parking in rear which is limited and street parking can be tricky. The service is great here. They acknowledge you right when you walk in and check in to see if you need anything else.

Yelp
My family and I have been coming here for years. We travel from Ventura County to Downtown LA for this delicious dish. Food is always on point and delightful. Restaurant has been remodeled and is now more spacious and the atmosphere is beautiful. Service is fast and attentive. They truly make you feel like home. I will always recommend this gem to friends and family.

Yelp
Well, I was very disappointed with the experience and food quality. It doesn't seem that the high reviews are from people who really appreciate good birria. First, although the place was practically empty on a Sunday afternoon, the staff was very slow. This is the only Mexican restaurant where you have to pay for chips and salsa ($3.99 and $2.99 respectively). The birria was mediocre at best. Good size portion for $17.99, but over on condiments. They give you 4 tortillas only and charge $1.99 for another 4. To top it off, they are not handmade!!! The menu is very limited and everything is over-priced.
google avatar

Jose Y.

Yelp
The birria was delicious delicious. The tortillas were okay, I guess they give 3 tortillas per order wrapped in foil. Which they didn't use foil but that's my preference. The horchata wasn't the best since it was made with powder. The Jamaica wasn't made from the actual flower and was super sweet. The prices were horrible, I ended up paying also most 50 bucks for 2 whole orders birria and 2 drinks. There's parking in the back but the spaces are narrow. I guess the plus side of the parking lot is that they don't make pay for parking anymore. There's also street parking in the front but the entrance is in the back.

Yelp
This place was recommended to us by a coworker so although it's a bit of a drive for us we thought we'd make the drive and try it. Let me tell you it didn't disappoint. Birria was delicious, portions just right for the price. Excellent service, the server came to our table several times to check on us. Restaurant is clean, not too loud and plenty of space and tables. The only thing missing is the handmade tortillas which would make their birria the perfect dish, hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

Gloria R.

Yelp
The best Birria in town! Delicious birria and reasonably priced. The place was so beautifully decorated , clean and we had great service. The place was packed . We will definitely come back again and again!

Yelp
We came in around 4:30 p.m. so it was really easy to park in the lot behind the restaurant but there was also available street parking right in front. We were greeted immediately and had very kind service throughout our visit! They checked on us, answered our questions about the menu, and gave us some recommendations. Everyone was so friendly! The place was large, nicely decorated, and clean. We had an order of quesabirria which came with two and some consomé for $15 and the large goat birria plate mixed which had leg, rib, and spine meat and came with a cup of consomé and 4 tortillas for $15.99. The waitress also brought us a bunch of onions, cilantro, lemons, and limes. We also got a jamaica which was perfect to wash everything down and in my opinion it wasn't too sweet and just tart enough. The flavors were absolutely delicious! The portion was perfect for two hungry people - we finished everything and left super full. I'd definitely be back for the quesabirria. The meat was so tender, juicy, and flavorful. Add all the fixings, some hot sauce, and dip into the consomé and it can't get any better! As for the plate, the eib meat was our favorite. Would love to try the birria nachos next time! They also mentioned that their menu keeps expanding and they might introduce birria burritos and tortas next which sounds amazing!

Yelp
"Birrieria don Boni is an absolute gem in the culinary world! From the moment you step through the door, you're greeted with warm hospitality and an inviting ambiance. The menu boasts an impressive array of authentic Mexican dishes, but the birria truly steals the show. Each bite is a symphony of flavors, perfectly balanced and expertly prepared. The attentive staff ensures your dining experience is nothing short of exceptional. Whether you're a seasoned birria enthusiast or trying it for the first time, Birrieria don Boni will undoubtedly exceed your expectations. A must-visit for any food lover!"

Yelp
Came in starving and cold, craving some warm tasty consommé and they delivered. Got the quessabirria, it was so good, got a second order. Definitely get it with goat meat! It's their specialty, even though they offer asada now, but goat meat was the way to go! So glad I was introduced to this place.
google avatar

Ruby M.

Yelp
If you want an authentic taste of birria, look no further this is the place for you! I got their small plate which is not so small, it was the perfect size. If you are feeling extra hungry, they have a large size as well. The weather in LA has been rainy and gloomy as of late, this is the perfect spot to hit up! The churro cake with the vanilla ice cream on the side was absolutely delicious.
google avatar

Rosa V.

Yelp
I went with my family and we ordered the small Plato de carnasa. We also ordered Plato de birria surtida. The orders come with cilantro, Limón, and tortillas. The regular coffee is good and the Café de olla is also good. One of my relatives ordered Jamaica and he said it was also good. The menu is simple and they just sell goat birria. The birria reminded me of the birria I've had in small towns in México. The ambience is chill, very clean establishment. Their restroom is clean too. The waiters are very attentive.

Yelp
Superb. Birria de chivo. Done. After having visited Don Boni a few times now, I am in like. Birria is and always has been an acquired taste for many unless you grew up eating it. I didn't grow up eating birria; I just happen to like it .... A lot. If you had it before, birria served here is traditional, made from goat (which I prefer) not beef. Today beef birria is all over LA in the form of food trucks and street stands. The consommé here is not traditional however. It's got loads of delicious Mexican cinnamon and a bit of chili so there is a kick to it. I love the combination of the flavors here so much that I get Pavlovian every time I think about it. LOL. Service is something to consider, be prepared --there can be a short wait for your food. To me it's worth it -- It is a family run restaurant making delicious birria with a consommé that you probably cannot get anywhere in Los Angeles. End of Yelp.

Helen J.

Yelp
Something's change. It tasted watered down today. I've been coming here since I was a little girl (almost 30 years). I love this place so much I'm actually devastated lol. I was just here a few months ago and now it tastes watered down. The consomme was thin and flavorless.
google avatar

Arturo M.

Yelp
Tapatíos from all over SoCal flock to Don Boni's for good reason. This landmark in Boyle Heights has been simmering delicious consome and birria de chivo for decades. They serve one thing, but they do it right! Birria is on the menu here all day until it sells out. The good news is you don't have to travel to Jalisco nor do you need to be from there in order to enjoy the delicious birria and broth served here. It is made in a time honored tradition with patience, love and no corners cut. This is as close to the real deal Hollyfield as you're going to get outside of Jalisco.

Sergio L.

Yelp
This Place Was Called Birrieria Jalisco But They Have the Same Old Recipes It's The Best Birrieria No Gamy Taste Or Cinnamon Taste People Come From Far Just To Get The Best Birrieria In Los Angeles I Drive On A Sunday Morning From Newport With My Big Pot For My Family & Stop At 5 Puntos For Fresh Homemade Tortillas & Chicharrón & Beans
google avatar

Edgar S.

Yelp
When you drive from far to enjoy birria, and staff is not even willing to move 2 tables to accommodate a party of 8. Staff need to work on their service skills but I wont be surprised since the owner herself (or she claimed) was rude, disrespectful and unapologetic.
google avatar

Teezy G.

Yelp
Waited outside today, Sunday morning, until 0940. Doors were still closed. Was craving the delicious broth in this rainy weather. Not sure if Hillary had something to do with the business being closed. They should post and update changes in business hours.
google avatar

Laura M.

Yelp
Delicious food, greatly recommend one of my favorites been going for many years recently I visited this place and the did a remodel they location looks amazing I usually drive and 1 hour to eat some bomb food .
google avatar

Nanci P.

Yelp
This is the best Birria de Chivo, hands down. Make a reservation and enjoy a nice plate of birria with consomé. The hot sauce is the bomb. You won't regret it!
google avatar

Adriana G.

Yelp
My parents have been coming to Don Boni's since before they renovated. A few years have past and we still go every Sunday to enjoy some birria Jalisco style! From South Central we commute to Boyle heights. It feels like home to have fresh warm tortillas and delicious birria de chivo. Definitely recommend
google avatar

B F.

Yelp
No regrets here food was very delicious. Disappointed that I didn't get the mixed plate. First time here. Next time I will... very delicious will recommend service is on point hostess always checking up to see if everything's good and all right I recommend this place to anybody and everybody if you like Birria and if you don't you'll love it
google avatar

Skye H.

Yelp
I would give it 5 stars because honestly is so hard to find a good place with birria. But the servers are so bland and with no type of energy that they want to be there. It was me and my mom's first time so I was asking questions the server looked annoyed so I just order something quick for me and my mom just pointed out what she wanted from the picture on the menu. Do yourself a favor and look into the menu before going. Also they give you a time to be there NO MORE THAN 60min. Isn't that something lol
google avatar

Cris I.

Yelp
I had been to this place three times already and each time, my usual order is: Spine,Rib,and Leg Birria Served with consomme Half order is $13.50 while the Full order is $15. Not sure who'll bother ordering half with only about a buck difference. Serving is pretty big though so I usually end up the other half to go. I love that the Birria is tender and spiced to perfection. Broth is rich in flavor. Each order comes with freshly made tortillas which is served very warm, onions, cilantro, and limes. They also serve desserts like flan, churro and gelatin. Drinks are also available which selections include coffee, tea, soda, horchata and Jamaica. Parking is very limited. There's metered parking around the area but it could be tough as well. Service isn't the best and communication is kind of hard cuz most members of the staff aren't bilingual.
google avatar

Jordan, Adrien C.

Yelp
I love this place so much I try to come whenever I can it's the best I recommend if you want birria you should come get it will ruin all of the other ones I love Thai place so Much and came since I was a kid if your looking for some delicious birria and great service y'all better come here
google avatar

Angela V.

Yelp
I have a medical alert service dog and just tried to eat here and was denied. I was immediately greeted with attitude and then was asked if I had an "Service dog ID" which I don't because they are illegitimate and illegal. When I tried to explain this to the worker, she kept cutting me off saying it's what she was told and when I asked to speak to a manager, I was again cut off and she told me with attitude "I'm the person in charge." This restaurant is not following the ADA laws.
google avatar

Fidel S.

Yelp
I been coming here for around 10yrs now and every time satisfied. Food is absolutely amazing this is not your typical Birria. Great quality meat with so much flavor. I always go with the 2 dinosaur bones called Chamorro. This will cost around $40-$50 depending the weight of it. Two people can eat from it easy because of so much meat it has. They also serve alcohol drinks like beer and micheladas. Service here is always fantastic the ladies are always up and down checking up on everything to make sure you don't need anything. If you like Birria and looking for some authentic Birria this is the place for you.
google avatar

Dominique R.

Yelp
Good customer and great food definitely will go back. First time eating goat birria!!!

Marlene R.

Yelp
Birria meat was dry, food did not have flavor. Tortillas are terrible. Server was very rude.
google avatar

Maggie A.

Yelp
Birria don Bono inside restaurant. Good food and service. Just be aware that sometimes there's too many little bones. I had to check the kids food, but they love it too!

Estephania R.

Yelp
Came here from the Bay area to try the birria and although the food was amazing the service was a none existent. The waitress with the red hair just simply was not welcoming it made the whole experience uncomfortable. We had questions about the menu but she was quick to let us know she was not going to answer and was yelling the order across the restaurant. Hopefully the owners know that their business experience needs improvement.
google avatar

Sam S.

Yelp
This was my first time coming to this place, recommended by a friend. I came in, got a table and waited for ten minutes without anyone approaching me, while I saw the servers attending other customers that came after me. I guess I'll never know if it was good or not, because they never cared to serve me. I won't be coming back to this place. All I got was onion and cilantro.
google avatar

Adam K.

Yelp
I've had a birria craving the last couple weeks, and a coworker suggested this place for me to try and satisfy my craving. This is a recommendation I don't regret trying out one bit! Finding the place was a little tricky. The front doors were gated shut, and the entrance was behind in an alleyway where they set up shop in the parking lot with an outdoor tent and ample outdoor seating. With no lick of Spanish fluency to my name, ordering was an adventure in communicating what I wanted: a half order of birria to go. The sweet server did her very best to help me, and with my pointing skills I was able to get my order across with her. Since I went right before the lunch rush, I only waited 5 minutes for my order! Everything was packed separately and neatly: the consome was in its own cup, the diced onion, cilantro and lime in a small bag, the birria in a small foil tray, and the tortillas wrapped in foil. A spicy salsa side was included as well. The birria was just pure perfection. The goat was super tender and flavorful, with barely a hint of gamey taste to it. It wasn't fatty or burnt, which I really liked. The consome was full of Mexican spices and nicely salted. With the consome soaking the goat meat with the diced onions, cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice, the whole dish was a rich explosion of spicy, fresh, and flavorful ingredients. The handmade tortilla were piping hot and paired so well with the birria, it tasted like the best tacos in LA for a moment when I ate them together! I ended up having leftover birria that became another meal for me, and it went perfectly with rice. Altogether, words can't describe how amazing the birria here is. It's absolutely worth trying and coming back for over and over again. I'll be coming here again if my birria cravings strike again!
google avatar

Enrique M.

Yelp
Birrieria Don Boni has been leading the birria game since before it became popular to chase after birria trucks. This place is a childhood staple for me. The consommé has a great complexity of flavor and the meat is very succulent and comes off the bone easy. Staff is fast, hardworking, courteous, and labor themselves to keep the restaurant pristine. The decor is beautiful since their remodeling. I always love a colorful restaurant space. Parking is available!
google avatar

Salim H.

Yelp
FANTASTIC!! We split a Grande Meat only with consume in the plate Oh my goodness!! The broth was sooooo good and the meat was perfect. Tortillas were fresh, warm, and homemade One of the best plates I've ever enjoyed Will go back for sure

David E.

Yelp
Don boni is the best quality birrieria . It legit and good for all the right reasons. If you know you know!
google avatar

Monica V.

Yelp
I guess my taste buds are not in sync with this location! I do not recommend! Sorry birria should not taste like tomato sauce! This is my opinion wish them well!
google avatar

Bev S.

Yelp
I've been to so many restaurants this trip and this was by far my favorite place. Staff were nice and had great advice on the food. They only serve goat Meat but i can see why they thrive. It was simply Delicious. I had the margarita was tasted good but barely has liquor. I also had the chocolate flan which was delicious . I would for sure come back

Zack M.

Yelp
Very simple, and unassuming. Small menu, but very authentic tic. I went early so there was no wait. But I could see it was starting to get busy around 12. Small plate with tortillas was perfect for lunch. I think it is all goat, but not entirely sure. Tasty and I would recommend getting the consume on the plate.
google avatar

Maria V.

Yelp
Love this birra place got the orden with the Jamaica. I hadn't been in a while but it did not disappoint.

Carolina L.

Yelp
I love this place with all my heart. I've been coming here for years! Every time I go here it reminds me of the many times my family and I used to go when I was little. Now that I'm older this place still gives me that same feeling. The food never loses its delicious flavor and staff always is so nice and kind whenever I go. I will DEFINITELY be coming back for the next few years!
google avatar

John T.

Yelp
If you love Birrieria this for sure is the place. The consume is phenomenal family owned been here for years. Definitely a Boyle Heights staple.

Yelp
We have been wanting to try Birrieria De Don Boni in Boyle Heights for the longest time, finally got a chance to try them. The service was very slow. When we walked in, the restaurant was nearly empty but still took a long time for us to get menu and water. The server also had some attitude issue and wouldn't speak English to us at all. Thank goodness we had someone in the group that could understand Spanish, or we would have walked out at that point. Their menu was small and simple, goat meat goat meat and more goat meat. We got a full order and it was excellent. The meat fell off the bone easily, and with some cilantro, onion, and lime juice, this plate was everything we dream about. Fine, we could over look the service at this point. We can't wait to go back for more.
