Birrieria Y Menuderia has migrated further north with the recent opening of a third branch. This location was in a nondescript, small strip mall in City Heights with several shared parking spaces out front. The inside was very roomy for such a business with seating for over 50 diners. From its name, the specialties were birria and menudo, the latter of which was a traditional Mexican soup made of cow stomach (tripe). I was interested in the former which was available as stewed beef (res) and stewed goat (chivo).
A broth (consome) is commonly served with birria, however I requested only tacos for my meal. They were a goat stew taco, a beef stew taco, and a taco buche. The last item was a fried pork belly taco which cost $1.70 more than the two birria varieties. Two salsa bottles and containers of cilantro, white onions, and limes were provided as garnishments. I also ordered a cup of horchata agua fresca to rinse my palate with the blend of rice, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon.
The tacos were served on small styrofoam trays. This is fine for takeout orders and catering, but for dine-in service standard tableware should be used. It's awkward when the vessels for the garnishments are classier than those for the food items. Of the three types, the goat was the best of the bunch. The stewed meat was very tender and succulent with some gamey flavor. I didn't apply either salsa as I wanted to appreciate the natural cook of the meats. I thought the pork would have some chicharrones to impart crispiness, yet there were none included.
