Yelp
I was under the impression that this was one of the top fine dining establishments in DC but I was woefully misguided.
My friend chose Bistro Bis for her birthday luncheon on Sat, 8/20/22 and made a 2:45 pm reservation. I arrived around 2:50 pm and was warmly greeted by the host and led to a table. I requested a booth which he graciously obliged. The only available one hadn't been cleaned yet from the previous patrons but he had me sit down while he made arrangements.
My friend was running a bit behind due to traffic but I was prepared to get started with drinks and appetizers.
A server cleared the previously dirty table, greeted me, asked me to sit down, set up plates and silverware, and poured water.
What occurred next was strange and absolutely puzzling.
When I asked to order a drink, the *same* waiter who had *just* set the table looked at his watch and said the kitchen is closing in 10 minutes, brunch is over. I was baffled as I was just seated for a 2:45 pm reservation, why would I be seated if there was no intention of allowing me to order?
My friend made the reservation so I was not aware of the restaurant hours. When I asked for clarification on why the 2:45 pm reservation was honored if the restaurant was closing, he became belligerent, and in what I can only describe as being akin to chastisement, he rudely starting shouting "you are 15 minutes late, there is a difference between 2:45 pm and 3 pm". He then began to snatch up the menus and started packing up the plates and cups that *he himself had just set up less than 5 minutes prior.I was truly shocked. And extremely confused. And honestly a little bit afraid because this was abnormal behavior, not only thoroughly unbefiting of an employee of a fine dining establishment but for any business at all. It was a very odd and uncomfortable experience.
I asked to speak with the host or a manager but my requests were ignored as he continued to pack up dining set and table cloth of the table that I was still sitting at.
. If someone told me this happened to them at any DC restaurant, let along Bistro Bis, I would have a very difficult time believing them. I almost want to laugh at the memory because that's just how shocking and ridiculous his actions were. He clearly had no intention of serving me so I got up to leave.
The host stopped me at the front desk and asked why I was leaving. I explained what occurred to him and he profusely apologized. He was as shocked and concerned as I was. He stated that while the restaurant did close at 3 pm, he tried everything to accommodate us.
While I appreciate that sentiment and applaud him for his professionalism and customer service, he should not have had to do that.
I see a few major issues here. As I stated, my friend, the celebrant, made the reservation not me. Why would a restaurant allow a 2:45 pm reservation if they know their kitchen would close at 3 pm? Who eats in 15 minutes? From my understanding, the online reservation required confirmation from the restaurant so it was not automated, someone had to approve it. Secondly, why were we seated if we would not be able to order?
Lastly, I don't even know what to say about this server. Other than your management needs to do a thorough investigation about this incident. I do not wish for anyone to experience what I did on Sat. and he should not have an opportunity to treat others this way. If you choose to retain him, then I believe intensive reorientation is necessary. I frequent DC fine dining restaurants. His behavior would be unacceptable anywhere. NotEven at a fast food restaurant.
I sincerely hope that management will investigate this and I believe that you owe my friend a genuine apology, if not me. It was her birthday celebration and she chose your restaurant. The ordeal was frankly very embarrassing for her and for me as well.
It should be fairly easy to find her contact information, it was the 2:45 pm reservation on Saturday, Aug. 20, 2022.
It should also be easy to identify this server and take appropriate corrective action.
