Bistro Chat Noir Shutters After More Than 11 Years on Upper East Side - Eater NY

"When you call the popular UES French Bistro Chat Noir, a recording explains that the restaurant is temporarily closed due to a gas leak in the building and that customers will be alerted when it reopens. But after a three-month struggle with city authorities and insurance companies, owner Suzanne Latapie has decided to close the more than 11-year-old restaurant at 22 East 66th St. for good. Bistro Chat Noir opened in 2006, but even before then, Latapie was quite well-known in the industry and the neighborhood. She started as a server in Midtown French restaurant Cafe Un Deux Trois and eventually worked at UES French fixture La Goulue for a decade after that, first as a hostess and then as a manager. With her experience, Chat Noir became one of the French bistros that attracted the neighborhood’s social types, with cozy banquettes and classics like duck magret and rack of lamb. 'It is so horrible, I’ve tried everything,' says Latapie. Con Ed had turned off her gas because of the leak, and she has been on a crusade to reopen, even looking into building an electrical kitchen when the prospect of redoing the building’s gas pipes proved too costly, she says. But that was also prohibitively expensive, and she felt that the quality of her dishes would suffer, she says. Latapie plans to auction off everything on Thursday to help pay vendors, from the wine to chairs to kitchen equipment. 'It feels like a death in the family, but I just had to walk away,' she says." - Beth Landman

A lovely place for brunch, lunch , or dinner spot in upper east side . I ordered the eggs Benedict, warm artichoke salad, and chocolate mousse. For brunch. I also had the cucumber martini. The service was superb. A new favorite dining spot. Best to make reservation in advance.

Ambience, service, and FOOD all rate 5 stars. Elegant but not ostentatious, tasteful warm decor. From our first greeting at the entrance to the last goodbye we were treated with polite respect. Attentive but never smothering or rushed.

This is the place to go if you're looking for an excellent French fine dining restaurant. The menu items are a bit pricey but they're totally worth the experience. The decor and the French music enhanced my experience and made me feel like I was in Paris. The wait staff was also very knowledgeable about the menu items and I found them to be very friendly and attentive.

At the time I visited NYC I found this pet friendly restaurant and had a wonderful experience with the staff, atmosphere and food! Sorry to see this permanently closed! I would have loved to eat here again avec mon chat, Monsieur Dexter!

Wow, this place is truly amazing. The food, the staff, the environment- it all exceeded our expectations! The food was full of flavor, the ambiance was quaint and romantic, and Johanna and the wait staff were attentive and incredibly friendly. We really felt special and look forward to our next night out at Chat Noir. Take a beautiful woman, order a bottle of wine, get the duck and the rack of lamb, and enjoy yourself... you deserve it.

This place was horrible. 1st and last time. Xmas meal price was $270 for 2 people for really average crappy food. Waited endlessly to get our entree, and the appetizer and entree were very average not good at all. Dessert was NOT good. For $270 I expect something special. I've eaten MUCH better food for a quarter of the price. Really truly upset and disappointed. Cramped dining room with people on top of each other. 1 star. Theres endless restaurants in manhattan, no need to waste your time here.

Delicious. The servers sat us right away, our food came rather quickly and it was well prepared. The serving portions were generous, but not too large. And omg- their chocolate soufflé is AMAZING. Huge portion and worth every bite.

The restaurant is lovely, the wait staff was perfect. Too bad the food didn't live up to our expectations. The rigatoni didn't taste quite right, the salmon was too peppery, the dessert was unspectacular. Maybe it was just the prix fix menu that was disappointing.
