"Southern food is scant in Montreal, but Nolah certainly doesn’t rely on mere novelty factor. Chef Richard Taitt has an adept hand with meat and seafood, serving bourbon mussels, Charleston-style shrimp and grits, and New Orleans specialties like gumbo and jambalaya." - Erinn Blicher, Eater Staff

"Located out in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, it may be geographically obscure to those focused on what’s around the center of the island, but this restaurant from chefs Richard Taitt and Chris Eamer and pastry chef Isabelle Plourde is the city’s premier place to get a taste of New Orleans.  Classics like shrimp and grits and blackened catfish, gumbo and crab cakes, beignets — they’re all here." - JP Karwacki, Ivy Lerner-Frank

"Gumbo in Montreal isn’t easy to come by; in fact, it’s virtually nonexistent. But this West Island Cajun haunt has been serving the stew with sausage and copious amounts of shrimps for almost nine years. The DDO strip mall restaurant is a favourite among locals, and the classic New Orleans comfort food is up for grabs as takeout or delivery." - Eater Staff, Holly Tousignant, Kaitlyn McInnis

It is an unforgettable and amazing experience from appetizer to dessert. We had Jambalaya and Southern fried chicken as appetizers. We had southern style beef short rib and Duck Conflict in dirty rice as main. We had Banana Pecan Cheesecake and Bread Pudding in Bourbon sauce as dessert. We emptied everything and we will definitely visit again.

Always a hit at Bistro Nolah! The food deserved a standing ovation. I had the lamb shank with oyster mushrooms and my wife had the seared scallops on a bed of sweet potatoe mash and pearled couscous. Service was also impeccable. Definitely recommend!

Our brunch at Bistro Nolah was an absolute delight, enjoyed on their charming outdoor terrace. The dishes were nothing short of extraordinary—we indulged in the exquisite surf and turf Benedict and the perfectly crisp fried chicken Benedict, complemented by a half plate of ham egg Benedict and a decadent side of praline bacon. Each bite showcased high-quality ingredients and impeccable presentation, making for an unforgettable experience.

We visited Bistro Nolah, a refined restaurant inspired by the rich and soulful cuisine of New Orleans, Louisiana. The name “Nolah” is a nod to NOLA (New Orleans, LA), and it’s a fitting tribute—the flavors truly capture the spirit of the region. The space is small and cozy, with a vibrant, energetic atmosphere. The lively background noise adds to the charm, creating a warm and animated dining experience without feeling overwhelming. The menu is compact, but each dish is thoughtfully crafted. We began with the jambalaya arancini, served with a deliciously spicy sauce that lingered pleasantly on the palate. For our main courses, we had the smoked brisket—exceptionally tender and beautifully seasoned—and the shrimp and grits. The shrimp had a bold, spicy profile, perfectly balanced by the smooth, comforting grit. Each bite was both satisfying and refined. To finish, we shared the banana cheesecake flambéed with Jack Daniel’s—rich, indulgent, and the perfect finale. Bistro Nolah offers a more upscale dining experience, and while it comes at a higher cost, the quality, attention to detail, and overall atmosphere make it well worth it. I would gladly recommend it for a special occasion or a memorable evening out.

It’s disappointing to write this,as Nolah has long been one of our favourites. We’ve dined here at least six times, often with guests, and always left impressed, until our most recent visit. We made a reservation for two to celebrate my fiancée’s birthday on a busy Sunday evening (Father’s Day and Grand Prix weekend).Despite arriving early, the terrace was already filling. Our server greeted us warmly and offered cocktails, which we accepted.Unfortunately, drinks took over 12 minutes to arrive, and water was only served after two requests. The cocktails lacked refinement, mine with a tired orange slice and his overrun with mint, resembling something from a resort buffet rather than a well-executed house cocktail. We weren’t given the usual explanation of the menu or specials, something we’ve always appreciated here.We chose to share the crab cake, followed by the lobster macaroni for each of us.At this point,we realised our server was the only one managing the entire terrace, approximately 15 tables. She remained courteous and did her utmost, but service understandably suffered. The crab cake was average, presented with a blob of sauce and scattered greens.More disappointing was the signature bread, which is usually warm, fluffy, and slightly sweet. This time,it was dense and dry.We requested another basket with our mains, hoping it was a one-off issue, but the second batch was just as tough. Our lobster macaroni arrived in small skillets, featuring one modest tail and two overly spicy shrimp. The pasta was rich and well-cooked,but there was no lobster in the actual macaroni, just the topping. For the price,it felt more like gourmet mac and cheese with seafood garnish. After finishing our meal, our table remained uncleared for 20 minutes. We declined dessert, though fond of their donuts, simply because of the delays and visible staff shortage. What stung most was the lack of acknowledgment of the birthday, which had been mentioned during booking. At an upscale restaurant, especially in the West Island, this is a basic courtesy that was notably missing. Our server confirmed she was the only staff member covering the entire terrace. She truly did her best, but no one person could maintain the level of service Nolah is known for under such conditions. This visit fell well short of what we’ve come to expect, both in food quality and experience. For a restaurant of this calibre, such an evening felt rushed, underwhelming, and overpriced.I share this as a loyal guest who has always held Nolah in high regard.I would welcome a response from management and hope they’ll consider making amends for what was meant to be a special evening, but sadly was not.

I have been waiting to try this restaurant for a long time but it has been difficult to reserve. Finally we booked for 4 ppl on a weekday at 6:45pm. On arrival our waiter welcomed us then proceeded to inform us that we will need to order quickly as there will be a second seating soon following us. We politely nodded and started looking at the menu, he returned to give us an overview of the main courses and finished by reminding us of the time limitation. At this point we were puzzled but we let it pass. Following the main course he returned with the desserts menu and asked us to pick quickly because we only had 20 minutes left. At this point we had only been there for an hour so my friend, frustrated, asked him why we can't stay for the 2 hours allocated in the reservation. He said he didn't know our arrival time even though he seated us then went to check our reservation. After much time and only when he came to take the desserts order he apologized for the mix-up. I understand restaurants need to make their margins but this was over the top and relentless. It left us all feeling underwhelmed by the whole experience. We didn't even enjoy the food. It was my first time at this place and I seriously doubt I'll be back. I hope they take this as constructive criticism and learn to manage their reservations in a gentler way.
