The 8 Best Coffee Shops In DC

"We don’t love chain coffee shops, but we do love Bitty & Beau’s in Georgetown, where you’ll find staffers with Disabilities running the show. Once you order, you’ll get a playing card that’ll get called when your drink is ready. Most folks are popping in and out, but the best way to enjoy Bitty & Beau’s is by posting up at the bar and watching your coffee get made. It’s the perfect chance to learn about the baristas—who might encourage you to follow the company on Instagram just to watch the in-store ticker add you to the tally." - tristiana hinton

What a fun coffee shop in the heart of Georgetown! The staff welcome you the moment you step inside. Order is easy and they even give you a playing card to know when your order is ready. There are few places to stand or sit with a few outlets. A clean bathroom is in the back by a map of the world. Take a pin and push it in where you’re from. My iced chai tasted refreshing!

Google
☕️ Fantastic $4.5 cold brew and the BEST SERVICE I’ve received at a coffee shop all year. Indoor & outdoor seating, GREAT swag (mugs, stickers, pins, hats), and reasonable prices. This chain employs 400+ people with disabilities and it’s not because it’s the “right” thing to do but because these folks are good at their jobs! You’ll be welcomed the moment you step inside of this “radically inclusive” space. ✅ ♿️ accessible entry (heavy door) and outdoor seating. Shop founders Amy & Ben Wright are the “proud parents of four children — Lillie, Emma Grace, Beau and Bitty. Lillie was born with autism, and Bitty & Beau were born with Down syndrome. After learning over 80% of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are unemployed nationwide, the Wrights decided to create a place where people with disabilities are valued & given opportunity for meaningful work. The model? A coffee shop, with an unforgettable staff that changes the way people see other people.”

Google
Had the best experience at this cute coffee shop. Everyone was friendly and welcoming. Service was fast and unloved the playing card as my ticket to get my drink. Being an educator, you always hear people talk about what kids can't do because of this or that. Let me say this was one of the best Chai Tea Lattes (with oatmilk) I have had along with the conversation. We need to stop limiting people because they look or sound different cause I had the best damn drink made by someone "different." Guess what he is a person too. Definitely will be back for another several locations in the US. Give them a try, you won't be disappointed, and will leave with a smile 😊

Google
I had the most wonderful experience here! The customer service was truly exceptional—everyone was so kind, welcoming, and genuinely sweet. You can feel the love and care in everything they do. And the chai? Absolutely amazing! So comforting and full of flavor. I can’t recommend this place enough. Support this beautiful mission and these incredible people!

Emma Rose W.

Google
This is a really respectable company – definitely worth reading into their mission. While the service was great and quick, I wouldn’t say the coffee itself is a “must-try,” as I thought my americano had a weird savory flavor. Also, there’s very minimal space to sit with friends so definitely not a coffee date/chat place. Still, it’s a great option for a quick to-go cup while out in the neighborhood!

Looking for a delicious cup of coffee and a chance to support a great cause? Look no further than Bitty & Beau's Coffee in Georgetown! This coffee shop is special because it employs and empowers individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The Atmosphere: The atmosphere at Bitty & Beau's is warm and welcoming. The staff is friendly and enthusiastic about providing excellent service. You can tell they take pride in their work and the mission of the company. The Coffee: But don't let the good cause overshadow the coffee itself! Bitty & Beau's roasts its own beans, ensuring a fresh and flavorful cup. They offer a variety of coffee drinks, as well as teas, pastries, and other treats. The Impact: By choosing Bitty & Beau's, you're not just getting a great cup of coffee, you're also supporting an organization that is making a difference in the lives of people with IDD. They are breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for inclusion. Overall: Bitty & Beau's Coffee is a great place to grab a coffee, relax, and support a worthy cause. I highly recommend checking it out!

This place is awesome! Their employees are super sweet, the atmosphere of this place is uplifting and professional. They have a wall where you can pin 📍 the place you are from! The coffee is freshly brewed and worth the price. ☕️

Google
today. The coffee was fabulous and not over priced. We ordered a 12oz chai ($5) and a 16oz iced dark chocolate mocha ($5.50). The mocha was to be expected from a mocha. I am particular about my chai, there was a subtle chai flavor, milky, not too sweet. The cashier was awesome, very kind. The other staff making the coffees could have been slightly more friendly. The coffee shop was very cute, clean. There is also access to a bathroom with purchase. If you're coming here to do work, there aren't really any seats in the cafe. Overall, would come again!

Yelp
Popped in on a Saturday morning for a coffee and a snack. Staff was friendly and attentive. Coffee was delicious and the cinnamon roll was absolutely amazing! This place is in Georgetown and it's a cute shop with some counter seating. They also sell their coffee and other items in their shop. It got quite busy so go early to avoid the line and wait. Enjoy!

Yelp
Amazing iced latte with oat milk, crafted to perfection without added sugar. Great hot chai latte, good mixture of spice and oat milk. Good balance from iced latte. Disappointed that I got to try this place for the first time and it was the last day before they closed down. Good spot for outdoor seating and people watching right at busy intersection in the heart of Georgetown.

Yelp
I tend to avoid coffee chains, but after reading about Bitty & Beau's mission to offer employment opportunities to folks with disabilities across the nation, I stopped by while I was in the Georgetown area. The cafe was warm and I liked that each order is given a playing card (Ace of hearts for me this past Saturday morning) which is called out when everything is ready. MOCHA I forgot the pricing, but it's an additional charge for oat milk here. I had the option of dark or white chocolate, so of course, dark! The drink was pretty good and the mocha was not too sweet. There wasn't much espresso flavor, though. Oat milk was a base for the whole drink. Overall, clean shop and good mission. If I'm back, I'll try a different drink.

Yelp
Swung by the closest coffee shop to that of my lash girl after my appointment because I needed a little pick me up. They have a decent variety of pastries to choose from but I didn't try and food. I ordered an iced matcha with oatmilk (already slightly sweetened). It tasted so good. Service is quick and I like that they hand you a card (from a deck of playing cards) and is essentially that is your order number. It's a small cafe but I saw a decent amount of people working in there and sitting outside.

Yelp
We had a late lunch and were looking for some coffee afterwards. A quick Google search turned up Bitty & Beau's and I'm sure glad that it did. When we walked in, we were enthusiastically greeted by the staff - they were so friendly and helpful, and genuinely looked like they enjoyed being there. This is so different from a lot of coffee shops, especially the big chains - where we've just come to accept the air of indifference and do our best to minimize interactions with staff. The espresso shot that was pulled for my iced oat milk latte was smooth with cocoa and cereal notes, and a pleasant amount of acidity. The latte was great - I just wish they had a location closer to our hotel, but at least next time we're in town, we'll be sure to visit again!

Yelp
Bitty & Beau's in Georgetown is my go-to coffee spot whenever I'm shopping in the neighborhood. I usually go for the vanilla latte, which is consistently delicious and well-priced. The location is super convenient, right in the heart of Georgetown, and I've never had to wait in a long line. my drink is always ready quickly. The staff always brings a great, positive energy that always brightens my day. One downside is that they no longer allow pet dogs inside, which is a bit of a bummer since I love bringing my dog everywhere with me, but I understand the policy. Overall, it's a warm, welcoming place with excellent coffee and I always come back whenever I'm in Georgetown!

Yelp
Fine spot to grab coffee in Georgetown. The busy main street has surprisingly few coffee options, and they are quite spread out. Everything we got from them - latte, cappuccino and espresso - was good and made correctly. Service was great, they have an excellent system and the employees are on it!
google avatar

Yelp
Got a flavor of the day iced tea which was refreshing on this hot summer day to walk around in Georgetown! Not too sweet, not too tart, and reasonably priced!
google avatar

Audrey L.

Yelp
Parking was a bit horrible but ended up parking illegally across the street for a quick trip. Had no previous knowledge of this place, just wanted some good coffee and this is what came up. I will definitely be coming back to support. I love what this business is about. Staff members were super helpful and patient as e so went in with the idea of being coffee but switched it up after seeing the seasonal menu and other items.

Yelp
I was in search of coffee after a long meeting in Georgetown and passed by this really cute place. It was eye catching and cozy. I saw beautiful smiles behind the counter. The coffee tasted great and as I was leaving I noticed the inclusive focused merchandise. I later realized, after looking up the coffee shop, that the company focused on hiring people with disabilities and I instantly loved it even more. I will definitely pop in every time in GT! Pricing is similar to Starbucks, but I'd happily give my money here than any other coffee shop

Yelp
a cute coffee shop with a lovely atmosphere and awesome mission -- the cafe employees people with disabilities and they're all so friendly and dedicated to their work :') restored my faith in humanity. especially ellen, the cashier, who greets everyone with a warm "hi! how may i help you." the coffee isn't overpriced, either. they use playing cards to keep track of orders which is a fun, innovative idea. wish they had some more seasonal specials or food items, but also understandable as to why they dont

Yelp
As many other reviewers, I've walked past this coffee spot a couple of times before. It is conveniently on the main road of Georgetown. I finally got a chance to step inside! It is a really nice spot and amazing service. I really like how this establishment clearly defines and differentiates itself from other coffee shops, and love how they uphold radical inclusivity. The staff is sooo sweet and friendly! Once you place an order, they provide you a playing card (7 of hearts), and call out your card once its ready! I also enjoyed the wall map where you can pin where you're from. You can see the diversity of the customers! I really enjoyed my hazelnut coffee (regularly coffee and added hazelnut coffee). You can also fill up your coffee with any choice of milk or added sweeteners in the area you pick up your drink. There's several spots to enjoy your beverage and baked goods in the shop. There's a few high chairs by the window, some chairs along the service bar and a ledge to stand and drink.

Yelp
The coffee was bad, they messed up our order, and they were rude to us when we asked for it to be corrected. Would not go back.

Yelp
Super sweet baristas and great lattes perfect to grab while strolling around Georgetown. Not too much seating available, just some bar stools at the counter - but when I got there on a weekday afternoon it was pretty empty. The coffee was reasonably priced and I love their mission also, so I definitely will be back!

Crystal T.

Yelp
I just came here for the first time and got an iced latte. It was extremely delicious and service was very fast. Lena took my order and she was an absolute sunshine and the sweetest cashier I've ever encountered.
google avatar

Leesa T.

Yelp
I walked past Bitty & Beau's the last time I was in Georgetown and meant to stop in. I'm glad I did during this visit. I was greeted by Lena who took my order. She asked me about my nail color and we talked a bit. Lena gave me the Queen of Hearts and told me my order would be ready at the other side of the bar. Sure, enough, I hear, "Queen of Hearts, your order is ready." I handed my card to the friendly barista and continued to look around the cozy store. I truly enjoyed the concept and conversation. Lena's hand written note was also a nice touch. The customer service made me feel very special and their product tasted good too.

Yelp
We stopped in for a quick coffee while walking through Georgetown. The staff were amazing, and the coffee was delicious. I love that they support the Down syndrome and other communities as well. #notbroken #radicalinusivity
google avatar

Christopher L.

Yelp
I came here because I wanted to try a new coffee shop beside my normal to-go spots in Georgetown, and my experience was pretty wonderful! There is a super heartfelt story behind this establishment as it caters to, hires, and provides resources for people with intellectual & developmental disabilities! There was a bunch of merch about being "radically inclusive", and "not broken". The store was very welcoming, and you can feel the vibe shift when you walk in. I ordered an iced coffee and all the cups had sharpie writing on them with inspirational words like "you are a star"! I don't know if those cups are printed like that or if the baristas write them before their shift starts as all the cups have some writing, and it's a lovely touch.
google avatar

Angie N.

Yelp
This place is truly a gem! Service is incredibly kind and quick. I got the peppermint mocha and it was absolutely delicious. There's mostly bar seating here so not great for a sit down coffee place but perfect if you need to pick up a drink as you're shopping through Georgetown! Will definitely be returning soon.

Yelp
tl;dr: Great coffee. Great cause. Was wandering around Georgetown in search of caffeination and a place to sit for a few hours, and Bitty & Beau's was perfect! The cafe has a counter with metal stools, but no other more comfortable chairs. Outside, the windows were sparkling clean, ensured by one of the employees actively cleaning and recleaning the windows. He was very friendly and assured me that he'd be in to help me right away. Walking in, the cafe was clean and modern. I was surprised that both walls were surrounded with merchandise, especially in a cafe I haven't heard of before, but the merch was cute! The coffee menu is pretty simple, with your coffee and espresso-based drinks as well as teas and smoothies. There are a few baked goods in the display case to the right of the register. I opted for a large iced chai latte. It was not overly sweet and well-caffeinated. They have this cute system to collect your order; instead of asking your name, they give you a playing card and they keep a matching playing card which they'll call out when your order is ready. The best part of the cafe is the concept. Bitty and Beau Wright were born with Down Syndrome and the Wrights started this cafe started in Wilmington, NC as part of their advocacy to employ people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Most of the employees are neurodiverse. They executed the orders really well and were even able to handle several rushes, and were so happy and friendly all the while. When there were no customers, the employees were constantly cleaning and organizing, never letting a moment idle. There is a shift supervisor who is neurotypical who can help troubleshoot and perform other duties. He was so great at letting the employees be challenged without being overwhelmed. Would definitely come back when I'm in town!
google avatar

Evan L.

Yelp
Great coffee with an even better story and cause- they advocate for and employ staff with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The atmosphere is very welcoming and the staff are friendly and efficient. In the back, there's also a fun pin board of the world where you can place a pin on the location of where you're from- I thought it was a cool touch that built on the shop's overall theme of inclusivity. I'll be coming back next time I'm in Georgetown !
google avatar

Chiamaka N.

Yelp
Absolutely loved coming here! The mission alone is inspiring - as someone with autistic brothers it's wonderful to have a place like this where people with special needs can be seen and contribute to society in a impactful and meaningful way.
google avatar

Graysen V.

Yelp
Cutest place with the sweetest staff. The iced lattes are very good and right in the center of all of Georgetown shopping so it's the perfect place to stop by for a great coffee!
google avatar

Jade J.

Yelp
Incredible service! Super quick and tasty lattes. All the staff are very friendly and they have a lot of great flavors for lattes. The line isn't too long at all and there's plenty of seating. The prices are also very reasonable compared to a Starbucks.

Yelp
I had heard about Bitty & Beau's on TikTok and I immediately had to check it out! Their story, values, and cause are amazing - I highly recommend checking it out. The service is amazing, and very quick! It is in such a nice spot, and they give you a card that they will call out when your order is ready. They have dairy free milk alternatives, which are always great! They have a variety of beverage options with decent pricing. I have already been a few times, and love taking my friends here when they visit & will definitely be returning!
google avatar

Elaine G.

Yelp
I came in for a coffee and I had kind service on an early afternoon. There was a questionable argument going among some patrons and I had to let myself out of there, maybe not a good place to hang out or study.

Yelp
UPDATE: Moments after posting my review, I found an online news article dated Mar 21,2023 saying this franchise location is now closed and will reopen under new corporate management! Their website says the same. No reason given. See my 2 screenshot pics of the article. Sad news. :( Here was the review I just posted before learning of the shop's closing: Sure - I'll glom on and give 5 stars to this hip coffee spot. The cause is AMAZING (per their website - "employing and empowering people with disabilities") and the location is primo for a coffee spot in the center of Georgetown - literally steps away from the corner of Wisconsin & M. Shockingly, there really aren't many indie coffee joints right there in the heart of Georgetown. Truth be told, we went to Blue Bottle first - stood in line, perused their anemic coffee drink menu, did not see anything to speak of on the food front, then stepped out of line and left - and headed over to B&B. Friendly staff, decent coffee/ flavored latte / drink and food options, a huge merch area and not break the bank (all going to a good cause to boot). Beware though - the place is small and it can get busy and crowded FAST so bring your patience with you if you see a long line. But it will be worth the wait. :)

Yelp
Fantastic service, really good summer iced tea special (green tea with watermelon), and an amazing mission! Please support this wonderful business

Yelp
I was in Washington DC for a retreat for moms who have kids with Down syndrome. Knowing that the mission of this AMAZING business is to give meaningful employment to people with disabilities so many of us moms decided to go. It was so great we went back twice! The staff are fantastic and so kind and knowledgable about their product. The shop is absolutely beautiful and I loved the map where people could pin where they are from. It was so fun to see how many people from all over world had visited Bitty and Beaus. The merch is awesome and I bought coffee to take home for my family members. This is just a really great space to be in and I cannot recommend it enough. I just hope we get one in Louisville! Btw: Lena, we love you!
google avatar

Carrisa J.

Yelp
Friendly and kind staff as well as great quality coffee! I came here for a study sesh and ordered the pumpkin spice latte. It's the perfect fall drink and you can tell that they make it with tender love and care. I also love and advocate for the mission of "radical inclusivity" and hope that they continue to spread their mission wherever they go. Will come back not only for the good coffee but to also say hi to the amazing baristas and beautiful staff members :,)

Yelp
Cold afternoon in Georgetown and this place was just the perfect spot for a delicious hot tea!!! Ordered the silent night tea and just perfect. The place is beautiful inside and the employees are amazing !!! Come try it out

Yelp
Clean and friendly with some delicious coffee! Great spot to take a little break, drink some coffee, and snack on some deliciousness. The iced coffee was just right and had the perfect amount of flavoring! Everyone here was courteous, professional and very friendly! Big fan and will be back. Enjoy!

Yelp
Had the pleasure of visiting Bitty and Beaus after driving by many times. I didn't realize the story behind this business, but absolutely love the concept. The staff was friendly, and the service was quick. Unfortunately, I didn't get to try any of the food, but I will be back to do so and I only had a chance to have the iced coffee. The coffee was nice but only lost a star because it did taste a bit watered down which may be due to personal preference. I would maybe recommend making it a red eye next time to get some more robust flavor. Overall, I really enjoyed this place and definitely recommend trying it.

Yelp
Delicious coffee and wonderful story about this place. Definitely plan to return. Cheers to the staff!

Yelp
Having been to the original Wilmington location, I was very excited to see a new franchise location here at home In addition to a very worthy mission, the shop design itself is sleek yet warm. The espresso drinks and pastries (especially the cinnamon roll) don't disappoint. You can also purchase a lot of cute merchandise and limited batch grounds. Seating is very limited (~10 seats overall), so don't expect to sit here and study all day. But a great addition on M street for a quick cup coffee and good vibes.

Yelp
I first heard about Bitty and Beau's from a news story about a year ago. I finally got the chance to try their coffee this past weekend. I love the concept. If you're unfamiliar with this company, Bitty and Beau's employs staff with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The vibe is welcoming and relaxed. I placed my order and was given a playing card which is used to identify when your order is ready. I ordered a white mocha came out pretty quickly. My coffee was delicious and well made. Service was great and staff was friendly. I highly recommend a visit.

Yelp
I really love this place. Bitty & Beau's Coffee doesn't only have great coffee but also great people and a great backstory. The company employs and supports people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. It feels very welcoming and cozy inside. I definitely recommend stopping by for a latte and one of their homemade rice crispy treats.

Yelp
My boyfriend and I were walking through Georgetown as we usually do every now and then and we do our best to try new spots every time. It was a cold, rainy, and busy Saturday so we were looking for a good coffee spot/cafe to hang for a bit. We stumbled upon this amazing establishment and were immediately greeted with the friendliest customer service possible. Everyone had a smile on their face and was so happy to see us (which is a rare thing to find at places especially in DC). We absolutely LOVED our drinks - I did a hot chai latte with spiced brown sugar which was so delicious and my boyfriend got his typical Americano order and loved the hot espresso. The place is so clean and comfortable to be in, with the best customer service ever! Highly recommending to my fellow DC/Arlington family & friends around the area!

Yelp
Bitty & Beau's Coffee is a cute Georgetown spot and regional chain that offers your daily dose of caffeine PLUS a mission: to empower individuals with disabilities and increase their societal visibility. Many of the employees do have intellectual or developmental disabilities, so Bitty & Beau's seems to be accomplishing this mission, but honestly, the stellar part of Bitty & Beau's is it's customer service. Everyone seems to take such care and genuine pleasure in the work that they do and the interactions they have with customers (and their fellow staff). From the outside looking in, it looks like a positive and supportive working environment! The Fair Labor Standards Act allows companies to hire individuals with disabilities and pay them a fraction of minimum wage. But does Bitty & Beau's do so? Nope! I was so happy to read, after my morning mocha, that Bitty & Beau's pays its employees more than minimum wage (according to their Facebook page). While I'm still curious if workers are able to retain any disability benefits or how Bitty & Beau mitigates these issues, I was initially happy to read about their pay. Being totally honest about the food and coffee, here: I had a mocha (4/5) and a cinnamon roll (3/5). The mocha was good, but I tend to like mine a little thicker. This may just be a personal preference that's impacting my rating, but I'm knocking a point just because I know I've had better mochas at local coffee spots. The cinnamon roll wasn't super moist or fresh-tasting, though I will say that the cream cheese icing was bomb. I don't think this is a reflection on the barista or bakery staff, but a reflection on the chain's recipes that may need some improvement. Looking at you, food scientists. So why am I giving Bitty & Beau's five stars on Yelp? Because I didn't go for the coffee or the breakfast. I went to see how a new bakery supports the local community and whether its appearance is consistent with its mission. I'm obviously not credentialed to investigate corporate social responsibility or anything, but I got good vibes and enthusiasm from all of the staff. As someone who also works in special education, I was so happy to see that every worker had accommodations to do their job! Like the playing card system used to track orders!

Solid coffee and decent prices. The interior was nice and fun with casual decor creating a welcoming environment and ample seating options to enjoy your drink and pastries. The staff were all extremely friendly, with prompt service. When you order they give you a playing card that they call out when it's ready. Best part about it though is the concept and cause, I would highly recommend and will definitely be returning!

Yelp
Visited here on a busy weekend -- service was quick and very friendly. I ordered an iced coffee and was pleasantly surprised to see all the available add-ins offered complimentary on the side (including a variety of creamers and syrup). After you order, you will be given a playing card that will be called to match you with your order. Such an efficient and neat system! My drink was made quickly and the coffee tasted great. Note: There was a lot of merchandise available for purchase, but very little to offer in terms of sizes (most of what I found was size S or 2XL). Tshirts, mugs, baby onesies and pint glasses are all available to buy with either the logo or an inclusive message.

Yelp
Came here for the first time on Valentine's Day and loved the extra sweet service everyone received. The staff were all so helpful and pleasant, and absolutely loved my iced brown sugar latte. I would totally recommend and visit again!

Yelp
I love this place so much! We stumbled in while walking down M street one morning and were greeted by the wonderful Lena. She is absolutely amazing and brought so much joy to our morning. She is incredibly uplifting and welcoming. We left feeling so happy to have walked in, and our drinks were delicious! She also greeted several regulars by name as well as memorized ours and we hope to see her again on our next visit! Please stop by if you have a chance. Such a lovely place full of lovely people!

Yelp
A wonderful, high touch coffee experience! I was in town for the Down syndrome Diagnosis Network Rockin Mom's retreat I was the keynote speaker for Friday night. I had never heard of bitty and Beaus but of course being with a few hundred mamas who have their own kiddos who have down syndrome special needs, it was a must see stop while in town. About an inspiring experience and an inspiring concept! It was a treat to be there with all of these moms, and a treat to be there with the staff!
