LA’s Best New Burger Spot Hides on a Public Golf Course in Long Beach | Eater LA

"A green deck hangs on the back of the pro shop where crowds ebb and flow across an afternoon; the low clouds and coastal breezes keep customers lingering as they pop open cans of cheap beer and swap stories. I found there’s no fancy clubhouse at this 42-year-old nine-hole par-three executive course—just worn fairways, friends laughing and reliving old tales—and the small, communal feel is amplified by the presence of Trepanier’s burger operation on the deck, which draws both regular golfers and a growing number of young Long Beach diners." - Farley Elliott

Google
Cool little 9 hole course to walk. Greens are dry and fast. Bunkers are hard packed dirt and not sand. Garmin has me at 2 miles of walking the full course. $15 twilight is a great deal. I'll be returning for sure.

Google
I love coming to Bixby Village early in the morning for one of the first tee times. It's quiet, nobody around. Just me and the course. I come here for Iron/wedge/putting and never bring my driver so I can't say that I have ever kept my score. Maybe the first time I did. Anyways, it is perfect for practice because there is a wide variety of holes for a 9 hole course. Some are shorter than others, primarily 5 and 6, but for the most part, all of them are on par with what you would expect. The morning guy is great, I always forget his name because I'm terrible and hate asking when I've been more than once but I'll catch it sometime. Thanks Bixby Village!

Anthony M.

Google
A great course to get in a quick 9 rounds if you're short on time.

Marc H.

Google
Had awesome burgers at the Crack Burger on the golf course. I highly recommend this experience. Small business owner/operator deserves our business every time.

Brock W.

Google
Only visited the food and grill area. Unbelievable gourmet burger with homemade sauces. Absolutely delicious. Recommended if you're in the area and hungry. You'll see.

Mary Ellen V.

Google
Good for practice but that's about it. The staff there were supwr nice and friendly. The people ahead of us thought they were on the PGA tour. It took a long time to play 9 holes behind them. This is the first time ever we've seen a sand trap in the middle of a green. Unique. It's ok for the money.

C P.

Google
Interesting course, not much actual green on the greens. Mostly dead grass. Price should be $10/ person.

Google
Not sure why this is double the cost of most nine holes in the area. This place is not well kept up and the greens are more like mini golf not one of them is flat - which I guess is good if you're looking for an extra challenge. Note to new golfers, hole 8 is essentially a 90 degree dog leg. Overall it is a fun course with three par 4s - I just wish it was better maintained.

Yelp
Bixby Village Golf Course is a great beginner 9-hole course. It only costs a low $25! The owner and staff are serving the community well with this course. I read the negative reviews about this course; many are over-the-top and ridiculous. If you want perfect greens, 18 holes and stunning scenery, then go pay $425 and still wait for a tee time at places like Pelican Hill. I've never had any problems with the staff. Each time I've played here, the players ahead and behind me were always friendly and nice. If you're a beginner, make Bixby Village Golf Course your home course until you get good. Even after you get good, come back here for the memories and continuous practice on a relaxed course and with nice people.

Yelp
The burgers in the pro shop are so good, we only played 5 holes and went to have lunch! I am not joking that is actually how it went down one recent Thursday afternoon. The menu is unassuming, the service is adequate, the attitude is evident. You eat out on the deck in the glorious outdoors, overlooking this humble little 9 hole course. The burger is legendary! I have had many burgers in my years and this one is big, and juicy, and perfectly sauced and seasoned. One of the very best I have ever had!
google avatar

Michael C.

Yelp
Book a tee time, play the round, and then a week and a half later get an email stating that you never showed up, and that your card will be charged.... Again! When you are done, grab yourself a 20 dollar burger with no fries.
google avatar

Anders Christofer C.

Yelp
This is an ok course and you don't pay more then $20 for the nine holes. It wasn't maintained the best and in the morning it was very very wet and they were still watering the greens!? The course due to the price being great but the course being in not the best shape have to land on a 4 star. The staff is very nice and they said instead of booking through their website that it is cheaper to call them directly. He charges $20 and through website it is something like $23. Pro tip for sure!!
google avatar

Samantha C.

Yelp
It's not the best looking golf Course but my husband and kids go there once in awhile. We finally tried the best burger which was good but best burger probably not the best. But def good!

Alfonso D.

Yelp
I enjoy playing at this course. Always walk up and get a tee time, my usual playing time is early morning, as soon as there's light out. It's $22 and about 2 miles walked every time. There's a good mix of 2 holes where drivers can be used, one good for wood or hybrid and the rest can get by with irons. The only downside is the bunkers have very little sand, if any. There is also a practice area that is well kept.

Joyce G.

Yelp
A fun 9 hole Course. It is not kept up well & there are not directions to the holes so can be confusing the 1st time.
google avatar

Austin W.

Yelp
Well this is definitely no Pebble Beach, and the greens make you want to chuck your putter into the hazardous lake on two. But I digress, if you are looking to have fun with the boys and throw back a couple and couldn't care less about your score. Well...This is the right place for you. Also sorry to the home owner on hole 4, I totally shanked my 60. I'll a beverage for you the next time I play.
google avatar

Mike J.

Yelp
Very nice course . Pretty well maintained. A true challenge for a beginning golfer , but doable . Staff is pleasant and carts are pretty nice . Will play again!

Marco B.

Yelp
Best place ever I will for sure go back to this place the best 9 hole in the area!!!!! People are super friendly

Michael W.

Yelp
Garbage! They charged me $33 for my 2 year old to ride in the cart. You talk about growing the game of golf but exploit a ridiculous fee for a toddler! These guys are scumbags, the course is a total dogtrack ( another word for shitty) 3 hours for 9 holes, 20 min wait on every hole. Take your money elsewhere and please don't expose your kids to golf here. Rec 9 and heartwell are far better options. Once again, scum bags
google avatar

Joyce F.

Yelp
good ol' bixby. course is really looking good and you can see the upgrades at the starter and bathrooms. price is reasonable and staff friendly. try the burgers! will be back.
google avatar

Barbi O.

Yelp
I thought $22 was too much to pay for this place. It was nice greens and well manicured when I went but I didn't like the second hole with the water and tall, dried up plants because you would lose a ball on either the water side or the dried up marshy side which I did to avoid the water. The tunnel crossing was convenient by crossing the parking lot and coming back. The design layout confused me because I didn't know where to hit it to, one hole I had to hit it to on a sharp right, in between a few trees and a hill. The last hole had a gigantic pit of dirt in front of the flag. So overall 3 stars for me. It could be cheaper for a 4th star. The staff was very nice to me, they let me start earlier than my tee time. So a plus for that.

Bill K.

Yelp
Great 9 hole golf course! I'm a beginner and found this course not difficult as Recreational or any 18 holes around the Long Beach area. This place is good for people who wants to improve their par 3s and approach shots. Staff is nice and the course is peaceful. Also the chef there seriously makes the best burgers (Bacon Jam) Would definitely go again!
google avatar

Mike M.

Yelp
Truly a waste of space. It's either a lack of personnel or lack of money, or both, that takes a great location and layout and turns it into pure crap. When you have acres of sand traps that have weeds throughout, that means you don't give a damn. Greens with tons of bare spots, lots of weeds and uneven surfaces means your caretakers are nonexistent. $22 for 9 holes of par 30 executive golf is a bargain if they just had a maintance crew and/or budget. Total embarrassment of a course. Tee boxes are just random spots...nothing defined. No yardage markers. Brown spots everywhere. Horrible sidewalks and pathways. Newport Beach Golf is a far better value, has 18 holes and much better greens. I'll take a crappy fairway as long as I have a chance of making a smooth putt.
google avatar

Neal T.

Yelp
It's basically unplayable unless you can hit the green with every shot. Fairways are dirt and holes and debris and everything is just a mess. It's very sad as this used to be an excellent and fun course to play. The sand traps are cement now and it's clear whoever owns it is just cutting costs as much as possible while raising rates to increase profit. On the plus side it's usually easy to get tee times because no one wants to go there. They have no food on Monday's not sure what days they do have food. Employees are all nice and you can play it fast when no one is there it takes an hour to finish 9 holes. The greens are in surprisingly good shape considering the rest of the course. I can't figure out if they are trying to make it worse or improve it but every time I've been the past two years it has been declining in playability so I have to assume they just want to kill all the grass and save water and money in the process?
google avatar

Israel M.

Yelp
Prices have gone up to $22.00 tee time without cart! The (dirt rock) bunkers have NO sand!! The greens got weeds! So when you putt the ball bounce all over the place,This place is to expensive for very poor maintenance conditions on thier greens!!!!
google avatar

Maruko X.

Yelp
The 9-hole Bixby Golf course is conveniently located in Long Beach, with a very small private parking lot, though there's ample street parking. The lawn lacks maintenance and is very bald from hole to hole, though the staff working here are very friendly.

Jason S.

Yelp
How desperate are you to swing an iron ? Last resort . Course is not maintained in any way.
google avatar

Amon H.

Yelp
Got followed around the course by the guy in the pro shop. Horrible experience and when he saw that we could actually play and weren't on the course screwing around he was embarrassed but still continued to follow us.

Stephanie A.

Yelp
The man at the front counter charged me $20 to WALK with my son on the course, I didn't even have clubs with me. He would not give me a cart, even though I'm recovering from a sprained ankle. No carts issued after 4:30pm, it hold him up from leaving for the day.
google avatar

Lyle O.

Yelp
I came to this location with low expectations because of what I read from the previous 2018/2019 reviews, I have to tell you that I had a great experience. Checking in at 9:20am on a Tuesday morning was a breeze. The lady behind the counter was very informative and helpful. She greeted us and explained a bit about the course and how it had a few par 4 holes (executive course), very friendly! The green fees were reasonable $14.50. She assigned our spot 3rd up and off we went. Th course itself was an executive 9 hole course and it played well. The fairways were nicely mowed and the greens were in good shape. Maybe because of the recent rains we've had they had a chance to green up? Again I was expecting the worse but they were in good shape. Sprinklers were on a bit while we played but they didn't interfere with our play. Greens weren't that fast and played true without much undulations, you can just go for the hole. On a side note, you can rent golf carts and even bag carts if you don't want to carry. There were a few carts out there while we played. Overall my experience was great and was even asked how I liked the course after the round by the same woman who checked us in. Most definitely going to playing here again.

Jason S.

Yelp
I would stay away from Bixby, I have played here multiple times and am now finally writing a review. The course is not maintained well at all for the prices I have paid. The bunkers don't have sand in them its just hard dirt. Every time I go up to the clubhouse the person behind the desk is extremely rude for absolutely no reason. Today he made snarky comments at me all because I asked about the cart prices. I have played tons of courses where they charge per person when buying a cart. I spent $40 today for nine holes and a cart. Oh, and to make things worse my bag fell off the cart 4 times because neither of the straps would hold my bag in. Absolutely ridiculous. Never coming here again.
google avatar

Jason R.

Yelp
I hate to do this...I have only given a 1 star rating twice in over 200 reviews, but this was not good. Strike #1- tried booking a reservation online but every link I tried did not work...so I called and was informed the online feature was not working; I got a tee time via phone and the guy was nice on the phone almost enough for me to think about giving them 2 stars Strike #2- probably the biggest strike in my opinion...the course is in terrible condition and if you look at photos posted 2 or more years ago you can see this was not always the case...there is just so many spots of dead grass or patches of no grass at all not just in the rough or the fairway but also on the greens. I think this is probably most evident on hole #2 which used to be a beautiful hole with water protecting the green there is a small berm along the right back of the green that is basically devoid of grass now and is just hard dirt; they are using the water feature along hole #3 as a place to store junk (broken equipment); fallen tree branches just stacked up in a portion of the parking lot Strike #3- there was a 6-some in front of us...I can understand letting the occasional 5-some out when it is slower but I don't think a group of 6 should ever be allowed...we had 3 so we were waiting on them at every hole and these guys were too busy downing a beer or lining up a putt as if they were putting to win the Masters to not have it severely affect the pace of play in a hugely annoying way. There were also a group of younger guys smoking weed and golfing barefoot and other guys drinking too which is fine but it just seemed like most of the people golfing here were messy drunks Strike #4- one of the carts caught on fire in the group ahead of us slowing play even more and we had to listen to them give the worker all of their drunken wisdom on what to do with cart on fire *there are just other nicer nearby courses than this one...I hope they can get this course back to the way it was a few years ago but if not just avoid this place like I plan to do

Yelp
Knowing what you're getting yourself into is important here. This isn't a fancy golf course. It's not Augusta or Torrey Pines. And no, it's not on the same level as the municipal courses in Long Beach like Recreation Golf and El Dorado. Long Beach residents are truly spoiled with these municipal courses. With that being said, be ready for rough fairways, tee boxes that haven't been mowed in some time, greens that may not always be green, and if it's just rained, your greens will be softer than quicksand. HOWEVER, if you know this going in, you need to make a game out of the game of golf itself. You're not there to shoot par anyways, so go in with the mindset of golfing a poorly maintained course where you just want to get away with your friends (or maybe take the kids to try golf) and see who can hit left handed, maybe put backwards blindfolded, or limit your club selection to just a 7 and putter. Don't forget to have fun. It's $20. For a poorly maintained course, it's still fun. I likely won't play again though. Walk on at Rec 9 $7 and that's just too hard to beat. Four stars because I had fun and the guy at the front desk was polite.

T W.

Yelp
There is nothing they could do to make it worse. Pitted greens, gouged out fairways and tees.
google avatar

Craig S.

Yelp
Wow what a FANTASTIC course! Some great challenging greens, perfect for everyone! Super friendly staff, Keith is a great front man to be greeted by, Keenan the Marshal is awesome, and David the grill master makes absolutely amazing burgers!!! It had a great locals feel. Our new go to course.
google avatar

Peter C.

Yelp
Terrible course. Tee boxes are awful, the whole fairway is the rough, and the bunkers are solid dirt. Also our cart was basically falling apart. Wouldn't recommend for the price. There are way cheaper places to play that are much better.

Craig L.

Yelp
The greens are full of bumps and dead grass. The tee box is covered in weeds. And fairways are non-existent. I walked into the pro shop to check in and no one was there. Stood around waiting for 5mins before anyone showed up. Golf anywhere else but here.

Garrett A.

Yelp
I would leave zero stars if I could. By far the worst course I have ever seen in my entire life. Even with great placed balls, you won't be able to find most. Greens are pathetic. Customer service is the worst I have ever experienced at a golf course. I highly recommend any other course in the area besides this one.
google avatar

Alyson M.

Yelp
I hired Dave to cater my 45th birthday party, and his food was a hit! I can't count how many people said, "That was the best burger I've ever had in my life!" They were right! The burger is juicy, full of flavor, and requires a two-handed grip. And his side dishes are awesome too! White bean chicken chili, Asian chicken pasta salad, corn relish, and potato salad---all on point. My guests were full and happy! I highly recommend getting a hold of whatever he has to offer!!!
google avatar

Mikki P.

Yelp
Worst golf course in the area. Tee area non existent. Fairways non existant, tree roots, dead grass, clumpy grass all throughout the course. Booked a tee time through GolfNow, another horrible service, in desperation when all other area courses were filled due to COVID 19 scheduling changes. Called the course to cancel 5 days before my tee time but was charged anyhow, because reservations made through GolfNow need to be cancelled through GolfNow. Would have loved to know that from the starter who took my call. I WILL NEVER PLAY AT THIS COURSE AGAIN.
google avatar

Paul A.

Yelp
WORST COURSE IMAGINABLE. EPIC. EPICALLY PHENOMENALLY OUTSTANDINGLY SHAMEFUL. Not only are the conditions of the course, by far the worst conditions of any course in the universe. The management of this course is even worse. Just yesterday I dropped my range finder on the fourth tee box, the group behind me picked it up and denied taking it (for which I cannot blame the course, bad people just exist apparently) but the course management just accused me of losing it. If you're considering playing here, you've been warned. Expect the worst, I'm certain you'll still be massively disappointed.
google avatar

John V.

Yelp
Excellent course if you just want a quick 9. Grounds aren't the best but for the price I would say its definitely appropriate. Some of the middle holes are kind of tight and you usually get someone from a hole or two away that has a ball in your fairway. Only thing that kind of sucks now is that they have no alcohol allowed on the course! As in you can only drink the beer they sell in their small clubhouse. Oh well.
google avatar

Ryan M.

Yelp
Playing here over the years has been a wonderful time. The new owners the last few years have put a lot of work into the beautification of this special nine hole golf course. It is improving weekly! They have been watering and landscaping making this place a great walk in the park! They have a new menu for their deli and the homemade chili is delicious and ready! Grab a burger with pasta salad and a coke for $8! Keep supporting this great private course! Thanks for all the fun times keep it up!

Yelp
This is the trashiest shit hole I've ever had the displeasure of laying my golf clubs down upon. First our tee time was at 5:15pm on a Thursday. We didn't get to tee off #1 until 5:45. I don't get frustrated at bad golf. Everyone starts somewhere, but if your bad and just learning how about speed it up a little and be considerate of the group behind. You will get none of that here though. The course is a rough as the people who play it. Sandals jeans and a drunken waddle is all you need to fit in here at Bixby. The course was absolute dog shit. I understand brown fairways the beginning of golf started with brown fairways. This course however is baked to the extreme. It's bumpy patch and full of ankle destroying potholes. The bunkers are hard and packed the greens are full of holes and overgrown weeds. I just ended up using my wedge till I got close to the hole and picked up from there. There is potential, that's the saddest thing. The layout is sick and it wouldn't be bad if it was taken care of. From what I've heard this place was built over a dump and the soil is so toxic grass won't grow right anymore. I believe it too, smells like garbage on the water holes. For 12$ this was absolutely the worst golf I've ever seen. You couldn't pay me to play this course again. It should be sold to the city and either turned into apartments or a park. I will never play here again and if your reading this thinking "eh maybe I'll try it" trust me even if you get a 5$ deal off golf now. THIS PLACE IS NOT WORTH IT!

Michael P.

Yelp
Double charged me - came in and paid and then they charged me as a no show. It's been over 2 weeks and the struggle for them to refund me is crazy. I've called about 2 times (they have never called me) and went in 2 times. Every-time the person in the pro club says that he can do anything and have to talk to the manager but the manager is never there. Golf wise this place is not good the greens are terrible and for $25 this is still overpriced it should be $12ish.... it's backed up by at lease 3 groups and takes the same time to finish a 18 hole and this is a 9 hole. First and last time here. Avoid
google avatar

Danny A.

Yelp
Bixby Village Golf course has a awesome bacon jam burger. It was a pleasant surprise. We ate it on the patio and it was a great experience
google avatar

Justin M.

Yelp
went a few weeks ago with a couple new golfers , had one lose a wedge and go back to look for it . so i told the group behind us they could play through while we waited for him to look. then the guy from behind the desk drove up to us like a bat out of hell ripping into us about making the group behind us wait and made us skip the hole. meanwhile the group he was referring to were being super nice about it. just real unnecessary stuff. anyways rude staff, and shit course conditions, spend a little extra and play somewhere nicer
google avatar

James W.

Yelp
Excellent local course! Nothing fancy. But a challenging 9 holes. Fun place to play a quick round of golf.

Christian A.

Yelp
You have to understand, this is a bang for your buck type of course. Bixby Village is a well maintained public course. The guys in the pro shop are polite when you are polite back and provide great service. Pace of play can be an issue during the weekend, but what cheap public course in LA isn't? Pro tip, stop for a burger and beer after your round and chill on the patio and get to know the staff. They are really great guys!
google avatar

Nancy L M.

Yelp
My girlfriend and I play here regularly, we try to get in a round once a week. We really love the friendly neighborhood course, they get to know you and you can tell they want you to have a great golf experience. We are beginners which this course is great for but we have also brought a family member who is an intermediate golfer and he really enjoyed it too. Keith at the pro desk is always really helpful and Dave who makes those incredible burgers is always ready to show off his menu and great BBQ. If you like a friendly neighborhood course that isn't stuffy and you like a casual no pressure round of golf this is the perfect course, are the ground perfectly manicured, no but is it a great course for the average person who wants a fun day of golf and work on their game, absolutely!
google avatar

Gina M.

Yelp
My son just starting golfing. He loves this course and is very comfortable with it. The only disappointment is seen in this picture. No golf course should be this dry. Just a little watering and effort could really go a long way. Obviously it doesn't keep people from golfing here, but I hope the owners make an effort to make this golf course as beautiful as it can be!!
google avatar

Brad S.

Yelp
Very rude management and poorly kept course. You will be better off golfing somewhere else.
google avatar

Matthew S.

Yelp
This course is about as expected. The green have dirt patches on them. You're putting on carpet. But the worst part is the old white man working the clubhouse/checking people in. He is the absolutely worst. Will not be back to the course because of him. He is an ass

Marla P.

Yelp
Golf course is very run down and over grown right now. Hopefully they'll bring it back to what is was pre covid!

Mike T.

Yelp
If I could do 0 stars I would. The old man that works there is the most rude person I have ever encountered at a golf course. He hung up on me when I asked if they gave driveable carts. I showed up at my Tee Time and he was stuffing his face at the counter. To no surprise, they were not renting carts that day. Everytime I come here that man has a chip on his shoulder and is very rude. We will never be back at this dump. All of the fairways and greens are unkept. Waste of time and money.

David F.

Yelp
This place is horrible. The course is in horrible condition. The fairways are mostly dirt. Some of the tee boxes don't have any grass at all! They allow groups of 5 during covid. They also let a group of 3 play ahead of us when they only had 1 set of clubs I spoke to the marshal, he says that they allow any group to share clubs. If you plan on playing a quick 9, be prepared to have a 4 hour round. The staff are very nice though.
google avatar

David S.

Yelp
Fair prices and they're very accommodating with tee times. If you're looking for a place to practice your short game while still being able to take out the driver then this is your course. Plus, everyone working at the pro shop is professional and they do their best to get your on the course quickly.
