Black Restaurant Owners Worry About The Impact of Chicago’s Paid Leave Ordinance - Eater Chicago

"BJ’s Market and Bakery’s John Meyer is among the Black restaurant owners who have voiced concerns about the new ordinance requiring restaurants to pay out unused time off. They argue it fails to consider the unique challenges they face compared to better-resourced establishments in North Side neighborhoods." - Ashok Selvam

Google
I really enjoy supporting community restaurants, especially black owned businesses, and this place is one of my favorites. However, I have to be honest.... today, the food wasn't so good. To be clear, Im not what you would consider a regular....however I am a faithful frequent customer. I ordered the short ribs with mac and cheese , dressing with a side of gravy and cranberry sauce... then added a side of yams. This is always my 1st option when I'm undecided on what to order.....its also a favorite because the short ribs of beef are usually very, very, very good. The mac n chees was chewy as if the pasta was undercooked ... the yams were over cooked and the flavor was off. The dressing was not good at all... texture taste flavor... all off. The ribs were not falling off the bone , not tender honesty....they were a little tough, and the taste was disappointing..... I was honestly really put off ... This is not a negative review it's an unfortunate circumstance, in my opinion. This experience is very rare for BJ's market. it is not common for this restaurant. That's why I give it three stars... they have set high expectations for themselves...in my opinion rarely ever disappointing. I'm looking forward to the turnaround. I couldn't throw the food away. It's still in my fridge.🤔😒🙄😳 I purchased it on Wednesday. Today is Friday.

Recently I have been to BJ’s two times for food, and from the moment I walked in the door I was greeted positively, and the food was absolutely delicious. I use to go to BJ’s years ago when it was on Stoney Island with my Mother and Grandmother (RIP LADIES). I just moved back to Chicago 3 weeks ago, and I wanted some GOOD soul food, and a lifetime friend suggested BJ’s, I was like OMG they’re still open. The first time I went it was RIGHT before they were closing, and the food was still fresh and yummy, the second time I went it was a bit earlier, and the food was so good, my mouth is watering just thinking about it. Great portion sizes, good prices, and the food consistency is right on point. Thanks guys, I love the food, and thank you for treating me with some awesome customer service. 5 stars across the board, see you soon. (Pic is from my leftovers the next day) Davi 😋😋

Tried the mustard fried catfish. While I absolutely love fried fish, I’m not a fan of the mustard fried version. The mustard flavor is not subtle . I imagine it would be like eating regular fried fish with mustard slathered on top. There wasn’t a real unique flavor for the fish. However, it was nice and crispy. The honey mustard dipping sauce was good.

Google
Very disappointed. Quality of food was terrible. Broccoli was hard/tough, Mac and cheese was gross and flavorless like instant Mac and the fish was awful, mushy inside and fried batter was falling off upon me picking up/cutting into the fish. Won’t visit again anytime soon.

Google
Ordered door dash and was brought burnt rancid fish. The fish was so rancid the smell of it made my entire family gag. We also ordered chicken that was COVERED in cumin spice. Who covers chicken in cumin?? The cooks are obviously on drugs and do not care about the quality or safety of the food.

I went on Sunday. The food was really good. I ordered a vegetarian sampler.

Google
I brought smothered chicken, yam, and green beans. It cost me $17.86 for half of a chicken meal. The yam was hard, not soft being cooked thoroughly, and the chicken was not good at all. All I ate was the chicken wing and chicken leg. I am so disappointed and not satisfied. To the owner, the manager stopped making excuses related to bad customer service, new employees etc. Close down if you're not going to do better!!!

Google
Wish I could give 0 stars. Ordered mustard fried catfish with greens, mac and dressing with gravy. My fault I didn't open order before I left...but catfish was awful couldn't even eat the crust on the outside, the fish was fried folded so it was like a big clump of fish ( looked liked a chicken breast), mac was boxed mac with cheese melted on top, greens were canned greens, dressing was definitely from a box and the gravy was watery and the corn muffin was not done. I ended up throwing the entire meal in the garbage. It was Easter so not alot was open! I won't be back! This is not authentic soul food! BJ Markets should be ashamed of themselves!

Yelp
Food was delicious, hot and reasonable. I used them for Xmas dinner, also. We had more than enough for four people.

Yelp
EVERYTHING is trash. They call it Dressing but it's really stuffing. Everything else had no taste at all. They need Chef Ramsey in that mf

Yelp
Well I went too the BJ Market on Stony Island Avenue in the 80s. What has this place come too... I could not believe the Crap they call food being served ... as I looked at the variety of food, being served. The dressing was disgusting I'm sure it was made from the box. The mash potatoes were really good so was broccoli the (dried up chicken breast) based in a broth to maintain some moisture very dry .The peach cobbler was terrible. Apparently people don't know that cinnamon nutmeg and allspice goes in peach and apple cobbler or pies...But I will say the young ladies that waited on me were funny as hell I could not stop laughing. They knew there food was not up too par. Sad SCM

Yelp
This the second time I at BJ market it is not the same everytime. The bbq is very tasty. The food is good. Glad they survived the pandemic.

Yelp
BJs is one of the last reliable soul food restaurants on the South Side of Chicago. Unfortunately, it's recently become carry out only, and moved to a far south side location. In short- good food, but not particularly convenient.

Yelp
BJ's Market 1737 E 95th St, Chicago, IL 60617 I ordered a ¼ White Chicken, with 2 sides. First of all, I've ordered a ¼ White several times, from various places and this is waaaaay below the amount for a ¼ White. Google a picture of a ¼ White Roasted Chicken compared to my photo, you'll see what I mean. Also, it looks like someone tore pieces off of a Rotisserie Chicken and placed it in a to go container. Also, look at the color of the Chicken, to me it looks very Gray, and the skin was not crispy at ALL! VERY rubbery GROSS! The collard greens were VERY under seasoned, & the sweet potatoes were CLEARLY out of a can. They FORCE you to buy waaay more sides than what you need or want. Which is CRAZY considering that the size and the Quality of the main entree is NOT properly COOKED & INSANELY SMALL!!! You NEED to do better. If the cooks in your restaurant have Never cooked professionally before, then you need to hire people who have.

Yelp
The restaurant staff was very polite and kind but I ordered smothered chicken yams cornbread dressing, baked, macaroni, and cheese but once I made it home, the chicken was still bleeding in the inside and when I called no one answered the phone

Yelp
I have followed the food of owner and chef BJ, since he left Wasburne Culinary Institute over 30 years ago, and I have patronized all of BJ'S eateries--the Mansion in the Pullman Community, the now closed markets on So. Stony Island and 7900 So. Racine and the market now located in the 95th Street Shopping Mall. I frequently stopped by BJ's Market for inexpensive take out meals in past years. I was never dissatisfied. But this changed the Saturday before this past January 1--holiday. This location had been closed, but it is now open Thursday through the weekend. I dropped by for a carry out meal of short ribs of beef with two sidès--mixed greens, macaroni, and cheese. The meal was without any real seasoning or taste, but I ate it because it was supposed to be a holiday meal. I also bought sweet potatoes and a peach cobbler dessert. The peach pie dessert was the greatest problem-- when I opened the container in which it was packed, I found it was some kind of uncooked crust with--I think peaches. This was the worst dessert I have ever eaten. It looked like wet bread with no sweet syrup and only small pieces of fruit. What a disappointment-- I paid $36.00 for the entire meal. I thought about taking the uneaten dessert in its container, back to BJ's after the holiday for a refund this week, but I decided I would let it go. I don't care for surprises, so I won't be buying anything else from BJ's Market--I am very disappointed about my decision because there aren't enough restaurants to patronize in my Southside community, and BJ's food was always of good quality and tasty!

Yelp
Placed a catering order for Thanksgiving, had me and fiance and others standing outside in the cold for over an hour! Then finally make it inside and order still isn't ready! I also asked for my food to be prepared cold and they prepared it hot. This place has really gone down they probably lost alot of business because they down sized the restaurant. Maybe new owners because this place use to be so much better. This will be the last order I ever place with them.

Yelp
The restaurant is take out only but the staff are always polite and the line moves pretty quickly even when they're busy. The food is always good. We have never been disappointed with anything we ordered. Our favorites are the beef ribs and the smothered chicken. We also love their macaroni and cheese and their yams. The food is always hot and fresh and tastes homemade.

Yelp
This review is based on what I ate. Please eliminate the onions from the chicken gravy and the green beans. The green beans taste pretty good and definitely don't need onions. They add nothing to the dish and interfere with the presentation. Also, the baked chicken was tender, but the skin is too fatty and undone. The dressing was good.

Yelp
BJ's never disappoints! My family has supported them for years, even when the original owner had the restaurant in Pullman. The food is flavorful, tender and appetizing. There is always a variety filled menu to satisfy all tastes. Fav: baked chicken and mustard fried catfish. Not sure if they still make turkey tips, yet those were delicious too! CON: Mac&chz and candied yam recipe could use a makeover. Needs to be more homemade. It's cool to eat when you want a taste, but it's not mama's. All green veggies are delicious, so that's a PRO! Note: the cashier didn't know that GrubHub takes orders for takeout via Yelp. When I arrived and said my name, she denied my order, even though I had a confirmation number and showed her my screen receipt. Her coworker had to correct her and show her where the orders process at a secondary computer.

Yelp
Don't believe the hype these pictures look good and all , but if your looking for a Real southern country cooking I would not recommend this place to buy dressing they are selling stove top stuffing , not Dressing

Yelp
This food was so damn good I can cry tears of joy. I had beef ribs, yams & greens with aside of cornbread. Baby the meat was seasoned for the Gods falling off the bone. I also had a side of peach cobbler which all know everyone can't make , but they snapped here it was so tasteful and sweet. I ordered through doordash and my food was still hot& the packaging was beautiful. Thanks so much for such an amazing meal I really appreciate it guys. Love you all so much for that meal from the soul

Yelp
I was craving soul food and decided to give Bj's Market a try since I had not been in over 10 years. (I used to take my family regularly on Sunday's after church to their original location). Unfortunately my $30 order was disappointing. The string beans tasted completely like liquid smoke flavoring totally overpowering the string bean, sweet potatoes did not smell nor taste authentic and the texture was gross. I purchased an additional piece of catfish filet (mustard style) which was not nearly as good as the regular style. My corn muffin looked as if someone had eaten off of it (I'm hoping it was broken). On a good note, customer service was great! The dressing , Mac and cheese and regular catfish was decent and the peach cobbler was good, but; not worth $30.......

Yelp
There's always a moment before you place an order at a restaurant you remembered wasn't that great the last time you ate there and you hesitate because you know the experience will be as bad as it was before. Somehow the experience is worse at the new location. Horrible customer service extremely slow like it always has been, and the food was terrible the only partial saving grace was the mustard catfish. Which was decent but I remember it came with a sauce that apparently they don't give out anymore. The sweet potatoes were horrible and seem to be floating in grease. The mac & cheese Was incredibly sad. And the dressing taste like stove top stuffing, without any gravy! The corn bread muffin should've been called a cornbread crumble because it didn't even hold together. They didn't even seem as if they wanted the customers that were there to support them and looking into the back of the restaurant it was a complete mess. I don't know who BJ is but you should be ashamed of this place. I will definitely never go back! Now I remember why I stopped going to the old location! Complete waste of money.

Bianca S.

Yelp
I was a little worried about ordering because over the past year or two, the food didn't taste as good as it use to for some reason. But when I tell you they came back strong! The food was so good Keep it up!

Yelp
I placed a GrubHub order for pickup, went to pick up my order and imagine my surprise when I got to the register and showed them my order and they said it had been picked up, now there was a young man who came in minutes before me stating he had a Grubhub order and the worker just handed him the bag (no process of control, no checking of his id) so apparently I literally watched my food walk out the door. When the cashier finally got to me and I stated I had an order for pickup and gave him my name he searched and saw that the order had been picked up already. At this point I'm understandably upset but ask how is this so, when I'm showing you my text message and I have ID to verify that this is my order, I am then met with a response of him saying "what you want me to do," flips the ipad around to show me that it's been picked up at 4:34 (I'm in line at that time by the way) I tell the young man I would like him to say he'd be replacing my order and apologize for having this happen, he states he can't do that because the order has already been picked up. I am definitely disappointed with the level of customer service, I'm not sure if there is a training process or what but I can't imagine that you allow your employees to treat their customers with such disdain.

Donna C.

Yelp
I visited the restaurant on 4/14/2021. I did not like the treatment that I received as I asked questions about the dinners. The young man was rude and commented that the customers were tripping. I continued with my order despite the rude comment. The smothered chicken (dark meat with mac and cheese and dressing) dinner that I paid for was not good at all. I find it unacceptable to be treated this way. You need to make a lot of changes at this location. I will not be supporting this business.

Vickie J.

Yelp
The food is good but the customer service Is terrible. They consistently get my order wrong no matter what and they usually get an attitude when I call to let them know. It's happened so many times.

Cheri R.

Yelp
Is this shop under new management?!i was really disappointed with the food I just picked up. The rib tips were tough and very fatty. The cabbage had no seasoning at all. I'm no tonsure if I'll go back

Dee S.

Yelp
My first visit here was ok..it was opening day and the tips were tender and the beef ribs were tender. I'm not a fan of banana peppers in my cabbage but it was ok. Second visit and I can tell it's a different cook..the tips are very tough not done we had to put them in the oven and they also cut them way too big..the greens are for sure out of the can and the dressing taste mixed with corn bread stove top stuffing..I am very disappointed

Yelp
Used to go to the old location on Stony Island thought we would try the new location. It doesn't have clear signage above the location but signs in the window. The location is very small now with only five two person tables. The front desk is a tad disorganized. Two items were an hour and half wait, which reflects some better checks need to be in place in the kitchen. We ordered one Nashville chicken sandwich with fries and rib tips with mac and cheese and string beans. The front of the house needs some additional training the young lady was serving food with no gloves and it took a minute to be served. We decided to eat in. My Nashville Hot chicken sandwich was very disappointing it was overcooked and ended up being dry while slathered in coleslaw and pickles. It wasn't that hot, but it was seasoned with spices. The fries tasted decent with a sprinkle of spice on top, but there wasn't a ton of them. The dinner was much better the Mac and cheese was tasty, however the green beans tasted like they were canned, the rib tips had some tough pieces but nice sauce. We had to ask for the corn muffins and they were tasty. Overall, needs some work and I hope it's just the first months problems and they will reclaim the deliciousness of the original BJ'S in it's hey day!
