The Ultimate Texas BBQ Road Trip | Eater

"A truly decadent Texas Wagyu brisket is on the chalkboard menu here (when it’s not sold out) at this low-and-slow barbecue stop located in Sisterdale, situated between Austin and San Antonio. Congenial owner Jake Gandolfo is known to sit and talk to patrons as they enjoy his truly destination barbecue. For a special side, try the Creamed Corn Maque Choux topped with your choice of smoked meats. Pro-tip: Call in your order before you head out to avoid sad faces when you arrive—they do tend to sell out quickly." - Cynthia Drake

As a self proclaimed BBQ snob, having grown up around Kreutz, Lockhart BBQ, (which I might add is the best in the State Of Texas), I was super excited to try Black Board BBQ. I met Marco at an event in Center Point, TX and he mentioned this amazing BBQ place in Sisterdale. My hubby and I took the drive from Kerrville to try out the BBQ and were VERY happy we did. The atmosphere, staff and BBQ did not disappoint!! I have to say that the BBQ bark was perfectly seasoned, the meat was juicy and tender and their sides were amazing!! My hubby got their jalapeño sausage and said it was delicious!! I got their burnt ends and garlic truffle fries. I have 2 words for you….. EAT HERE!!! #MeatSweats #BBQ #Texas

This beautiful Sunday started with a leisurely drive to Boerne/Sisterdale so we could try what promised to be some damn good BBQ. They opened at 11, we arrived at 11:05 and the line was already out the door. These folks know how to keep a promise!! We got a bit carried away and ordered the burnt ends, moist brisket, fries, Mac n cheese, fried chicken and chicken fried steak served with out of the world cornbread and the best potato salad we've ever eaten. Portions are generous and Yes, boxes were requested so no cooking for me tonight. While not close enough to be a regular spot for us, we agreed we'll be back especially since they have some cobblers they serve now and again that I want to try. Worth every mile of the drive.

We went here with our son, daughter in law and grandchildren. Very friendly staff and excellent BBQ. I had the two meat two sides plate, Joanie had the BBQ burger and Tom and Laura got a sample of brisket and ribs. We had a wonderful time and will return soon.

Little country gem here in Sisterdale. After an amazing trip to The Preserve to pet some elephants, we were starving and BBQ was gonna hit the spot. We almost passed this place up but that would have been a major mistake. Wonderful customer service, very friendly staff, and even better food. If this place ain't ran by a bunch of men, I'd be shocked because it exudes your man at home smokin meat on a Sunday afternoon. Some of the best Mac and cheese and fries around! Highly recommend. Don't miss out on this prominent Texas staple.

Listen up folks, Im sure the word is out on Black Board Bar B Q, so IYKYK! I had lunch for the first time, I had gotten good reviews but boy was I surprised. I ordered the 2 meat plate, moist brisket and turkey ( both meats were perfectly flavored, like wow, wow and woweee), with a side of some of the best mac and cheese I've ever eaten, charro beans and complimentary side of pickles, red onions and pickled jalapeños. Oh man , oh man, If you haven't tried this place, we'll don't sleep on it, in my opinion it should be in the top 5 in Texas. Oh yes, I will be back for the Ribs, I was told I missed out on one of the most requested items there, their delicious ribs. The owner personally came out and gave me more napkins, a fly helicopter and made sure I was well taken care of. Waitstaff was wonderful as well and the service made me feel like I was royalty. So , get there before Texas Monthly puts them on the List!! You will love it as much as I did 😍

This place is AMAZING!.. I stopped here while lost on my way back to SA from Fredericksburg 4 years ago by accident. But nothing happens by accident, I’m so glad I did. This past weekend, I stopped by to see if it was still as good as I remember . Man o man, it was amazing to say the least. The hospitality is great, I don’t think my Arnold Palmer ever got under half. Shoutout to Mrs. Christie for simply being awesome. I will make sure to visit again.

The Brisket pepper hamburger 🍔 🍖 was so 🔥 the brisket sandwich is also one of the best I have ever tried. The sausage was to die for. The macaroni corn cold sandwich was a little unusual but was good. Try the corn bread and butter!

Yelp
I am almost reluctant to write this, not for fear of anything this place did, but to expose it and find that camping out in line the night before becomes the only certain way to get their burnt ends again. A coworker referred this place to me and encouraged me to tag along with him one Saturday. We arrived at noon and found the place full. As you come in, you order first and then get your seat. We arrived with a large group and the staff immediately were extremely accommodating, offering to move tables so that we could sit together. Then, all 13 of us go in line to order. Being that there were so many we were able to order a little of everything. The burnt ends sold out with my order and if you want to ensure you get some on your visit - and you do - get. Here. Early. From the brisket, burnt ends, the smoked jalapeño cheese sausage, quail meat popsicles, ribs, jalapeño slaw, to its truffle fries. This place did not miss. The table bbq sauce was phenomenal. The brisket, I ordered a pound of the fatty, was insane. Great smoke ring with deep flavor, juicy, and fall apart tender. One bite and you'd ask yourself: who the hell is Franklin? And why do people care? For context, yes I've had Franklin's. Camped out for it. Didn't get the hype. But here? Better bbq and no Austin traffic? I'll be back again, and again. I capped the meal with their banana pudding. Which btw, they keep chilled until you're done with the bbq and ready to enjoy. It was incredible. Paired it all with a Shiner. A perfect Saturday. Amazing service, no Austin traffic, and better bbq? No thanks Frank, I'll be coming here.

Yelp
Black Board BBQ is as authentic Texas BBQ as it gets. If you love smoked Texas brisket, you shall find none better. Their brisket is bother super tender as well as mouth watering juicy. I've eaten BBQ all over the country including a couple of BBQ cookoffs and I can say with zero doubt that I've never tasted better sliced brisket. I've also eaten their smoked BBQ whole chickens. They are also absolutely fantastic. Juicy, with a tenderness and woody, smoky, nutty, flavor that is complimented by a standout, fantastic BBQ sauce that is just the right amounts of sweet, tangy, smoky, and not too thick. It's hard to find anything for me to be critical about with this place but if I could reach a little, it might be that they could add more side dishes. Their Hominy is fantastic and their french fries fried in beef tallow are second to none. Id like to see a few more vegetable offerings and a baked sweet and/or russet potato added to the mix. The people that run Black Board are as Texas southern hospitality as it gets. Everyone has a smile for you and upon your second visit , everyone seems to know your name and treats you like family the owners are nearly always present during open hours and walking the dining room checking on customers, backing up waitstaff, or simply asking regulars how the family is doing. Black Board BBQ gets an A+ from me; a rating I never give. I'm now a lifetime customer

Yelp
Saturday,we stopped at BlackBoard's after a short 3 hour tour of Fredericksburg. Boy o boy,we were hungry. We skipped lunch for our Blackboard 5:45 pm dinner. We ordered the Brisket Sandwich, with the Camp Beans, mouthwatering. We even met the owner's lovely wife. Today,Sunday,we stopped in for our "To-Go" lunch. We ordered the Pork Belly Burnt Ends, Jalapeno/Honey Dipped,BBQ'd Chicken, and the Brisket. Oh soooo Good! Arnold said it best ...,"I'll be bach!"

Yelp
I reviewed Blackboard BBQ when it was owned by the previous management. It's time to refresh the review now that Melissa and Joe are in charge. This is their life. They live on the property and have dedicated it all to great BBQ and sides. Honestly, Joe has improved his brisket and burnt ends since taking over. I now proclaim Blackboard BBQ to make my Top Ten List for Texas brisket. This is not a place you are going to bump into while visiting one of many quaint Hill Country towns. You have to know where Blackboard BBQ is located (Sisterdale) and be willing to navigate the back country roads to get here. It's worth the drive. We usually visit when we go to Fredericksburg to pick up wine at Augusta Vin. I'm always afraid they will be out of something I want if we get there too late. On this visit they still had brisket burnt ends. This was the first time we had them here. Smoky, tender, with a lot of great peppery bark. Incredible! The brisket on this trip was the best I've had here and it is now on my Top Ten in Texas list. It's moist, tender, smoky, and has a good bark. It's great with their peppery BBQ sauce, but is also great on it's own. I'll even eat the leftovers cold. It's that good! The garlic confit sausage is very bold and flavorful. Definitely a garlic lovers favorite. Never heard of it, but it's so tasty. For sides we had the hominy casserole and truffle fries. The casserole is good, but the fries steal the side show. Joe trims the fat from his briskets and then renders it and filters it. Then they fry it using the beef tallow. That's what made McDonalds fries so good before the food police pressured them to use tasteless seed oil. We were there on a quiet Sunday afternoon and had the opportunity to steal Melissa for a few minutes while we enjoyed everything. It was great to catch up with her and learn more about the couples background. Joe has a varied culinary journey including the Cypress Grille in Boerne and the Gage Hotel in Marathon. It looks like he learned the pitmaster chops at the Brick Vault Brewery & Barbecue in Marathon. Melissa runs the front of the house and has done a great job providing a great dining experience. They knocked down a wall and the place os really open with a nice view of the rafters. A country gem. Can I tell you a secret? On Thursdays, they don't sell BBQ. Instead they offer 1/2 lb of Fresh Ground Beef Brisket Burgers. Served up on a Garlic Tallow Toasted Bun with a side of fries in the evening. OMG, I wished I lived closer. Melissa tells us it is a locals night where she knows most of the families that show up. If you have not been to Black Board BBQ you need to get there now before they become as famous as Franklins or Snows and you are waiting for hours to get in.

Yelp
Food - 4.5 Stars Service - 5 Stars Atmosphere - 4 Stars A bit out of the way, but worth the trip. We stopped on our way home from Comfort, TX and we are happy we did. Nice BBQ restaurant with damn decent food. I had the brisket, pork ribs, and turkey, and my wife had the chopped beef sandwich. The brisket was the show stopper! The ribs were OK, but a little dry. They may have held them a little long. The Turkey was on point and I'm definitely glad I got some. The sides that we had were equally good, or better. I had the elote corn salad, and my wife had the truffle parmesan fries. The corn salad was the bomb, and the fries were pretty darn good. The portions were very generous. Watch for them on the Texas Monthly BBQ list as they definitely have the potential to make it on there if TM happens to go to Sisterdale to give them a try.

Yelp
This Texas barbecue was so good & I am so glad I made the one hour drive on a Saturday around 1pm from our home in Far West San Antonio. The waygu brisket was the most tender brisket I've had in a long time - and I had lean so that saying a lot. I had the two side two, meat special for $22 and they also provided a very Hefty military discount... plus I added the banana cream pie which was extremely good; it was the kind that was not too sweet but had a very rich banana flavor and had a crispy thin unique crust that was sort of like pie crust only a little bit thinner and just as good and Flaky as Grandma's used to be! The people here are super friendly and I highly recommend that you come out to Sisterdale to treat yourself and your family to this gem of a barbecue restaurant in the Texas Hill Country... it is also very close to other attractions so you might make a day of it!

Yelp
(((Long, honest & worth the read))) Hands down best BBQ we've had in Central Texas. We've had Opies BBQ in Spicewood which was probably our favorite until we came across Black Board. We've had 2M (San Antonio), Smoke (San Antonio), Blacks (New Braunfels), Pinkerton's (San Antonio), Blue Lacy (Castroville), Salt Lick (Driftwood), Coopers Old Time Pit (Austin), It's All Good (Spicewood), Two Bros (San Antonio), County Line (Austin), Barbcuties (San Antonio absolutely horrible, closed now). That's just from what I can remember of the top of my head. It's very seldom you find a BBQ restaurant that has both amazing BBQ and amazing sides. Black Board knocked it out of the park. This was our experience: Walking in the door we were immediately greeted with bright cheerful faces. While in line we were introduced to the days special which was a Chicken Fried Steak with 3 options of gravy (we chose the green chili cream gravy) & 2 sides...um, mashed potatoes yes please & fresh green beans. After finding a seat we were greeted a couple of times and they checked on our order and delivered when ready. It was worth the 15 minute wait. Chicken Fried Steak: Delicious! The breading is perfectly dipped, the steak is thicker than usual and not chewy like most. Gravy was on freaggin point bro! Oh my LAWD! Sorry, I'm a sucker for chicken fried steak. We then moved onto our platter of masculinity - the real reason we came. The moist brisket first of course visually inspecting (I mean, I'm judgy with my bbq bro step back) so tender, so juicy and seasoned to perfection it was a good sign, so I moved on in for the taste test. Mmmmm ohhh myyy gosshhhh...SORRY! I'll keep it age appropriate What's the saying the kids used a while back BUSSIN! Let's talk Burnt Ends...I'm a 50/50 fan because that's about as often as you'll find some home run, out of this world, award winning burnt ends...aaaaand for the Dub! They were amazing, seasoning, moist & just melt in your mouth. Jalapeño Cheese Sausage...no this isn't your average run of the mill, over smoked, heavy, dried out sausage...the ungodly amount of gigantic chunks of melted cheese and perfect ratio of jalapeños in this sausage will blow your mind. Seasoned to perfection you'll slap your mamma if she's with you and if she's not I highly recommend getting up and walking over to someone else's mamma and respectfully slapping her instead. Out of respect for the sausage chef of course. Chicken...this is such a sensitive subject for me guys, many bbq restaurants are moving away from chicken and it is very disappointing. When done right it's extremely profitable for the seller and delicious for the consumer...ME! Seasoning and cook was absolutely on point coupled with the perfect amount of smoke. BAM! (Sorry Emeril had to do it) Sides...normally the ugly redheaded stepchild of the bbq world...not at Black Board! The Hominy Casserole (wtf, I didn't even know this was a thing I'm still flippin blown away). Wow just wow, and the Mac n Cheese, pffffft - bruh Drop. And the Cole slaw, again not your average basic "B" - try a creamy, jalapeño Cole slaw. Like it should be because we're in the SOUTH! And last but not least...the one item that I've never witnessed anyone turn down no matter how full they were. Even if it meant digging deep to release that glare receiving belch, or maybe even excuse yourself to the restroom to make room in ways I'll refrain from to prevent your appetite being lost - Crème Brûlée. I mean...yes, the picture says it all. Just put your ear close to the picture and listen while it whispers sweet crunchy thoughts into your deep inner ear...uh huh, mesmerizing right! Man oh man, the perfect thickly fired sugar topping with perfectly sweetened layer of fluffy perfect custard that absolutely melts your soul...I had an out of body experience when it hit my tongue. Now if I haven't convinced you to try this place...I don't know who will. As a matter of fact, you should probably vacate the state...immediately. Otherwise - YES they're out in the middle of the sticks, yea they're only open Friday - Sunday with an occasional burger night Thursday...so call your secretary, clear your schedule for the weekend. Go on Saturday...trust me you're going to need all day Sunday to recover from the well earned Meat Sweats. But it's worth it I'm telling you! If you can't trust me...who can you trust! To the crew at Black Board - I worship the smoke that rolls from your pits, I enjoy your sausage and will likely send you subliminal messages about how much I love your meat. Hey, it's nothing personal, your meat is just unforgettable!...compliments to you all. Hands down, I'm impressed. We'll be back soon! So glad we found you...

Kelios I.

Yelp
SO GOOD. My wife and I spent the afternoon shopping in Fredricksburg with the intention of stopping by BlackBoard, and as soon as we got out of the car it was obvious we'd made the right call! The rich scent of smoke permeated everything, really whetting our appetites. We wanted to try everything, but we restrained ourselves--with difficulty. We had the burnt ends (the last serving--whew) and they were fantastic, just beautifully caramelized, moist, and falling apart tender. The lean brisket was DELICIOUS, with a deep smoke flavor and a nice crust--we brought a little bit home and gave it a second lease on life as nachos, which were every bit as good. The garlic confit sausage was some of the best smoked sausage I've ever had. Moist and delicious with exceptional flavor that was unlike any I'd tried before. The only downside was the elote mac, which was as phenomenally bad as everything else was good. Service was good too--safe to say we WILL be back!

Yelp
Black Board exceeded all of my expectations. This is the kind of place that screams good BBQ. Perfect smoke rings, flawless ribs and all around solid flavor that wasn't overpowering. It was the perfect amount to compliment the meat and let them talk for themselves. The slaw wasn't my favorite but that was strictly because I prefer a super mayo base. The Mac and French fries however, were out of this world. We will definitely be back when we come to town. Also I love that the owner came around and chatted with everyone. Such a homey place and lots of personal touches.

F.Carlos G.

Yelp
Amazing barbecue from ribs, brisket and sausage... all were awesome. Fried chicken was good too. I little bit pricy but if food is that good, then price does not matter.
google avatar

Allen L.

Yelp
The burnt ends are good, brisket is excellent, the turkey is moist with a wonderful smoky flavor. GET THE HOMINY CASSEROLE...OMG!!! Service was great and the atmosphere is rustic and laid back. One of the best BBQ experiences I have had recently. Highly recommended!!!

Tina W.

Yelp
This is the best bbq around! All of the food is amazing! The staff are all a pleasure to be around and the old school building makes you feel right at home. Burger night on Thursdays is great. 3 different types of burgers and their fries.... the best you'll ever taste. We average eating there twice a week, it's that good!! Any of their side dishes will definitely delight your taste buds!!
google avatar

Dave M.

Yelp
Very disappointed in the quality of the brisket. Way over cooked. The only good meat served was the burnt ends which were very good. Sides were just OK. Overall, not worth the drive IMO.
google avatar

Donna N.

Yelp
This has got to be one of my favorite bbq places. From the burnt ends to ribs and pulled pork and chicken everything was perfectly cooked. The old barn ambiance along with great service and good food made this a great day out!
google avatar

Jeff S.

Yelp
I never drove 45 minutes to pickup any type of food but that's what our friends told us we needed to do and they were right! The place has an awesome rustic look. The folks were really nice and took great care of us. But the best part was the food. Some of the best brisket, pork and sausage I've ever had. Sides were great too. Overall terrific experience! Well worth the drive.
google avatar

D M.

Yelp
All it was delicious, really liked the sauce that came with the quail. Took most of it home and had two more meals from this tray.
google avatar

Mike B.

Yelp
Met my kids there today for lunch. Order the moist brisket, garlic sausage and pork belly burnt ends. Our sides included creamy jalapeño cole slaw, hominy casserole and the truffle fries. This is the best bbq I've had in Texas in 30 years. Everything was delicious and the entire staff was so friendly and attentive. Well worth the trip. Only downside is that it may have ruined my bbq experience elsewhere
google avatar

Luke S.

Yelp
Lovely meat that I slobbered all over so 5 stars . Will commeeee back . When the chef made this meat theburnt ends were my favorites

Yelp
This is such a cool place! I've driven by Black Board Bar B Q numerous times on the way to Fredericksburg but have never stopped. We finally had the timing right and they were not sold out when we passed by. I loved the huge dining area and the service was wonderful, full of great recommendations. The Barbecue was so good as expected. We had the brisket and a variety of sides and even got extra to take home. This is a great place to stop off of the beaten path for amazing Texas barbecue.
google avatar

Claude D.

Yelp
Burnt ends - pork ribs- brisket were fantastic Brownie a bit dry - all sides very good exception beans - they were OK - quail poppers good but also pricey
google avatar

Cheryl G.

Yelp
We love Black Board! The BBQ and sides are always fantastic! We would love it even if it wasn't the only restaurant in town , but it is, and thank God it's so good! The staff is wonderful and so friendly and fun too! Highly recommend!
google avatar

Nancy M.

Yelp
Service was great. Ambiance was great. I ordered the burnt ends and they were great. Hubby order the 2 meat plate with ribs and brisket and sides of charro beans and Mac-n-cheese. The sides were good. But the brisket was over cooked with a good portion too hard to eat. The ribs were also overcooked and dry. Been wanting to try this place for a couple years but probably won't go back.

Fernando C.

Yelp
Definitely one of the best bbq places, beats out all the others in terms of flavor and actually melts as you pick it up type of brisket. This will be my go to for bbq in the hill country!
google avatar

Roxy W.

Yelp
This is a BBQ in Boerne! Your order first then sit down. The menu is on the chalkboard once you enter. They offer indoor and outdoor seating. The bathrooms are located outdoors. The staff is friendly and even remembers your name after ordering. They check up to see if food was good and thanked us for coming to dine here. The burnt end briskets are a must!!! So moist and delicious! The ribs were great and fell off the bone. Very tasty! The bbq sauce was sweet! Some complimentary items are bread, picked onions, jalapeños and pickles. Overall, this is a must visit when you are in Boerne! You won't regret getting the burnt end briskets. They truly melt in your mouth!

Yelp
Finally had the chance to try out Black Board Bar B Q. I was way out of my normal haunts so decided to swing by. It was a late lunch run (maybe close to 2 on Sunday) so I was worried that everything was sold out. Fortunately, I was in good luck and most everything except a daily special was still around. First off the place is huge, cool, well decorated and has a warm & welcoming vibe. Up to and including the sofa outdoors by the restrooms so you can wait if you need to. The staff were all spot on great! They were seriously fun, good, and impressively customer focused. Each seemed to enjoy working there and getting people great meals. I started out with Quail Luckenbach Lollipops. Three little legs that were well breaded and then fried with a unique sauce that came with it. I thought they were good but definitely a novelty at the cost. I would try them again if it was someone else's dime, but next time I'd rather throw the money at a dessert. Next up was the brisket. No 1/4 pounds here. Ok with me, I was able to take the rest home. The brisket was amazingly good. After spending most of 2022 pursuing the Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ spots, I was amazed this wasn't in there. It could have easily kicked out a many of the places/meals I had. Went with the moist brisket and my only disappointment is that if I wanted more, it is a heck of a drive for me. Next up was the jalapeno, cheddar link. It had a great texture and skin snapped audibly. The cheese even oozed out which is relatively uncommon. This was just a great add. To accompany my meat coma, I had a couple sides. First was the Asian slaw. That was a very crisp, fresh coleslaw with the typical Asian spices that I wish I was smart enough to define. Definitely would do that again. The Maque Choux (just ask for corn if you can't pronounce it) wasn't what I was expecting. It didn't taste bad, it was just the texture. I LOVE anything corn and would get this again, but I wouldn't rave about it. Overall a FANTASTIC stop and certainly glad I went. Only wish I had more people with me so I could sample more and take home less.

Yelp
Great drive!!! Best burnt ends around! All of the sides are excellent but the beams are magical! Love this place!

Yelp
Excellent place to have BBQ - we love to go Sunday afternoon. Best choice for family sharing
google avatar

Yelp
This restaurant is amazing! Best BBQ in Texas , in my opinion. Not only is the BBQ excellent, they have paid a lot of attention to presenting delicious and memorable sides. The owners and the weight staff could not be nicer and more accommodating. Don't miss this one!

Yelp
Burnt Ends.......Burnt Ends......Burnt Ends!!! Little miraculous bites of meat butter! I mean those were amazing......perfect amount of smoke, perfect fat content and perfect flavor!!! Joe, the pitmaster, has that smoker hitting on all cylinders, the brisket was perfectly smoked and fork tender, ribs were just at the fall-off-the-bone stage but still a nice bite, the jalapeño slaw was the perfect foil to cut the richness of all the meats we tried. This is what I think of when I think of Hill Country BBQ. Did I mention the Burnt Ribs!!!!!
google avatar

Yelp
We came here after watching an episode so BBQuest on YouTube. It was about a 45 minute drive from where we live in San Antonio and it was totally worth it. The drive is a nice windy back road through hill country. They have a large unpaved parking lot. We got here around 2:30, which I guess is a little late as some of their more popular items were sold out. We got brisket, ribs, and pulled pork. We also got sides of Mac and cheese and Asian slaw. Everything was delicious and came out quick. My only complaint is the meat was only offered in half pound increments, which meant we couldn't got more options with smaller portions. You order at the counter right inside the front door. Your food is brought to you by a server. The food came with standard Texas barbecue accompaniments of white bread, pickles, onions, and jalapeños

Yelp
We have been coast to coast to coast boarder to border over the past 6years and have been on search for great barbecue........ We finally found this place open.....unbelievably perfect brisket sandwich, slaw, mac n cheese and fries.....sparkling clean interior.....friendly fun dedicated staff on tge edge of historic Sisterdale..... They are open Thursday, friday and Saturday...call ahead....they have scheduled entertainment....

Anahi H.

Yelp
We eat our meats with little to no BBQ sauce, it's that good. Their BBQ sauce has great flavor. You can call your order ahead of time and it's guaranteed to be available. The drive out to Black Board is lovely. Plenty of outdoor and indoor seating. The service is outstanding, they come and check on you frequently to refill or buss anything off the table.
google avatar

Roy N.

Yelp
This is truly a Texas experience. Good service; good bbq! They are especially known for their "burnt ends"...but everything is good.
google avatar

Tonyia F.

Yelp
Saw this place on the show Elder Eats. The brisket was so tender, slides down your throat. Pork ribs a bit tough. Sausage was fabulous. Mac and cheese was delicious and cream corn as well. The coleslaw is an acquired taste, tasted more like it belied with an Asian dish. Slightly pricey but worth it. Oh and lemonade could be a lil bit sweeter. Employees were friendly and eager to serve.
google avatar

Scott L.

Yelp
Cold day, small interior, so I shared the table. Rustic atmosphere with lots of kitsch. Food was fantastic. The Texas experience demands brisket, and it was smoked perfectly. Service was very friendly.

Rachel C.

Yelp
Finally!!!! Our expectations were met and beyond Black Board Bbq was Amazing Brisket so tender and juicy Order jalapeño cheese sausage and Conti sausage Ribs were smoked perfectly Mac and cheese with toasted Parmesan Panko topping Jalapeño slaw, not so spicy I couldn't enjoy Ordered a pound of brisket and burnt end to go Christy was awesome so friendly and gave us a Giant homemade chocolate chip cookie for free to go It's well worth the trip and will definitely be back

Great BBQ find! You can smell it before you get out of car. Food was delicious and falls off the bone. Flavors are great combination. No one spoke because food was that good.

Yelp
We decided to take the long trek to hidden spot and it kinda didn't disappoint. All I wanted was some moist brisket and 1 rib and the ribs were marked as being sold out but they weren't... whew right? Ehhhh, I would have been ok if they were because they were expensive and mediocre at best. Just too tough and peppery for my liking. We had a lot leftover. So I'd probably debone it and make a grilled cheese pork rib sandwich. The BBQ sauce wasn't my favorite but I've had worse, maybe it's the overuse of peppercorns. Mac n' Cheese... can I get a heck yeah! So creamy and delicious, 100% recommend and worth the rumbling stomach for us lactose intolerant folk. The creamed corn was just ok, I tend to like mine a little more on the sweeter side and not the tangy side so I'll pass on this next time. The Asian slaw... so we needed a fresh element to go with all the meat and smoky goodness, but this was just weird and did not belong. Just NO, like seriously it doesn't compliment the BBQ at all. Nice concept but a regular creamy Mayo based cole slaw would have sufficed. Potato bread... excellent choice! Pickles, jalapeños and pickled onions- yes! Moist brisket- oh yeah baby! It was so tender, juicy, and smokey. It was perfect. The fat to meat ratio was on point, I literally wanted to fall into a meat coma from being a glutton. Do not skip this! Carrot cake- diabetes on a plate, absolutely divine!! It was rich but not wealthy hahaha! it almost competed with the brisket with the moistness. I would return but now I know exactly what to order!

Yelp
This place has been on my list for a long time and now I'm really upset at myself for not coming sooner. If you're from San Antonio and headed to Fredericksburg/stonewall... you have to do a pit stop here. We got the brisket, ribs, and special was pork belly burnt ends. We got the truffle fries and Mac and cheese for sides. Everything was delicious. Even the pickles and onions at least tasted homemade. There's inside seating or outside seating with a beautiful property. Service was friendly even though they were busy. Definitely a must do for amazing food and Texas hospitality.

Yelp
This restaurant has new owners and I really like the way they make BBQ. Their brisket is excellent. Good sides and great cookies for dessert. Oh, and get the lemon aid! So refreshing on these hot summer days.

Yelp
What an amazing BBQ joint near Sisterdale, TX! The brisket is among the top 5 I've ever had (I've tried brisket from dozens of places!). The sides aren't usual up to par when compared to brisket at many great BBQ joints in Texas, but this place is the exception! You can tell the owner/chef is a true trained chef (that's my guess) and a dedicated pitmaster. Can't wait to be back!

Yelp
Came in for Mother's Day.Although we were late and they were sold out of most meats, we still had a wonderful meal. The sausages are delicious, and definitely get the Cole slaw. Excellent customer service- much appreciated!

Yelp
As far as BBQ goes, it's up to the taste of the customer to determine how good the food truly is. The food here is tasty and delicious. Others who have written about their food are right. It's above most traditional BBQ places. However, the prices are what's keeping me from a 5 star rating. Is it just me or has the BBQ world become too expensive for us regular folks? I'm not putting blame on the restaurant owners. They charge what they think is equitable so they can operate as a business. Also, the price of beef is outrageous as well. Nevertheless, I don't visit as regularly although I love their food. It's frustrating but it's the way it is and I have to live with it. Overall, the location is ideal - it's on a country road FM 1376 or Sisterdale Road, and the building looks like a big wood barn but go inside and it's transformed into a great eating venue. Enjoy!

Yelp
The brisket was tender and moist with enough smokiness to it. Also get the Mac n cheese, you won't regret it. Quick and fast service, definitely out in the country ambiance. I will definitely be coming back. The staff was very welcoming

Yelp
WOW this place is the place to go! it's a small little shack in the middle of no where but has to die for food! the only i wasn't excited about was the creamed corn as i felt like the corn was from a can. The brisket, mac and cheese , sausage , pulled pork , quail bites was sooo good i'm drooling over it now! i will say there is some very interesting coleslaw , completely different than the normal kind , it's worth a try though just not on a first date as there is black seeds in there . The people behind the counter are so fun and super helpful! Oh and the dessert is oh so yummy and HOMEMADE ! how can you beat that!

Yelp
I will say this is going to be an awkward review after seeing the other ratings this place gets. The four of us have been wanting to try this for quite sometime, because we all love BBQ and have eaten at well over 50 BBQ places. We drive up and no smoke coming from the pit.. ..interesting, this is a Friday and the first day to be open? We order the moist brisket, ribs and a link of Italian sausage. The cue comes out and is luke warm and has an interesting smoke smell?? The brisket has no smoke ring and no flavor. We each take one bite of our ribs and agree on a weird "wang" taste. The sausage had no flavor, so we boxed all of it up and threw it away. When leaving I walked over to the pit, it had no fire in it, hence the reason for no smoke? Plenty of wood laying around it? Don't know when or where the cue was cooked that we ate or what others will eat the next two days?

Yelp
Amazing food in Sisterdale! We had the quail, burnt ends, pulled pork and Mac N cheese. The quail was cooked to perfection! Great flavor and great fixings!
