Black Elephant Coffee - Review - Atwater Village - Los Angeles - The Infatuation

"There are a lot of options for coffee shops on the main stretch of Atwater Village, but Black Elephant is by far the best for working. Or staring at your laptop and pretending you’re working. Their coffee is good (it’s Stumptown, like nearly every other place in town), and if you get hungry, there’s an equally good ham and cheese croissant. It’s quiet, you’ll always be able to find a seat, and most importantly, they’ve got plenty of covered sidewalk seating for when you need to distract yourself from script notes by gazing off into traffic on Glendale Blvd." - Brett Keating

This coffee shop is so cute! I loved that it had quite a lot of seating options too! I ordered a Mexican Mocha and a berry muffin (I forgot to take a picture of the muffin). Both were absolutely delicious and satisfied my sweets craving. The prices were also reasonable. I definitely recommend stopping by here for a coffee break. A plus: the bathroom was really clean.

01/22/23 - My first time here. My latte was delicious. I will be back. 06/06/25 - This coffee shop is now apart of my weekend bike ride. I've been back maybe 20+ times. I recommend the lavender latte, it's really yummy.

Google
Coffee and the atmosphere were great, but the food not so much. croissant with ham and cheese heated in a microwave was not worth it

Google
Sage cheddar croissant on the right was nice. Chocolate croissant on the left was ok. Coffee was good. Overall, I enjoyed coffee here but not much for pastries.

Google
I think I just paid $10 for the worst Matcha latte in Los Angeles. Threw away my drink after one sip. Color was not ceremonial grade as the menu price. I’m soooo disappointed in this matcha and feel like I just threw away my money.

Google
Came in here to get some coffee, but their pastry pulled me in. Not only did they have sweet ones, but they also had a savory. The one I got was almost like a mini pizza. I need to come back and try out more things. They have plenty of seating, inside and out.

Google
The coffee was great and came out fast despite the busy Sunday rush. I ordered an iced latte and enjoyed the outdoor patio. You may have to wait for a spot to open up but it’s right near the farmer’s market and super convenient.

Google
I was skeptical at first but the coffee, I had an oat latte, was really good. The barista made it so quickly I was like “this won’t be good.” But on the contrary it was spot on! Small shop and fills up fast so get here early if you’re looking work.

Yelp
We got Diddy Lattes before GTA6. Aside from the freaky latte, everything else in their menu is really good. Staff is nice too. I haven't had a bad experience here.

Yelp
Delicious coffee that reminds me of home. The ingredients many of their drinks had offered a wide variety of syrups, which can be good or bad, depending on how serious you are about coffee. For me? I just love a delicious warm cup of Joe. I wanna come back and try the Tumeric ginger latte and the Ube Matcha.

Yelp
I have passed by this coffee shop many times and never noticed it until today. I have been to their Burbank shop before but not here. The service was friendly and quick, beautiful interiors with plenty of tables and chairs, some outdoor seating. Great place to hang out with friends and grab some coffee I ordered the cold brew with easy milk and enjoyed it much. I will try other drinks next time I'm nearby. The only bad thing is the parking situation.

Yelp
It is great cool place next to busy street but feel cool good coffee and great service and I really like inside design simple and cool Thank you for good coffee

Yelp
Placed a relatively large online order and everything was fresh and ready on time when I picked it up. Most of the drinks were lattes, but I tried the lavender matcha and it was great! Also tried the little chocolate cake and that was very good as well. The shop is kind of small, and busy when I went.

Yelp
The place was okay. Coffee was decent. There was a line on a Saturday morning full of gentrifiers - Atwater has changed a lot and not for the best. Otherwise, I think customer service was fine. The place is rather small and there are not too many places to seat, and the noise can also be a bit overwhelming.

Yelp
I came here to study. This was the busiest coffee shop I've ever been to. The line was out of the door from the time they opened until the afternoon. I watched the pastry shelf go from full to completely empty within a few hours; they sold every last pastry. It was easy to find seating but it probably isn't the best place to do work because it's a little busy and loud. Nonetheless it's still possible to get work done if you have good focus. I tried the the Charcoal Raspberry Latte. It's no fault of the latte but more so that I'm probably not a "charcoal" kind of gal because it tasted a little medicinal, and I wished it had more raspberry. I wanted to try the butterfly pea tea drink but they were out of it! I'll definitely come back to try it.

Yelp
Good little coffee shop with a mild bathroom in the corner. Service was good and the server recommended us to get our drinks hot which we didnt regret. The chagaccino with its monkfruit and mushroom-based coffee is absolutely delicious and super healthy. The matcha latte is good although nothing special from other matcha lattes I had. Great heart foam design.
google avatar

Yelp
Tried their horchata latte with oat milk and a mushroom provolone croissant. Both items were delicious! The coffee was not overly sweet and was smooth. The croissant was soft and buttery and the filling was seasoned well; my only feedback is that I wish the croissant was a bit flakier but I would still rate it like 4.9/5. The staff was bright and friendly and managed to work quickly while still engaging with customers. The shop itself is brightly lit and has a lot of natural sunlight coming through. There's plenty of seating indoors and outdoors. Would definitely come back! Bonus: they have water bowls and treats for their doggy customers hehe
google avatar

Yelp
Good place to grab a coffee. They use Stumptown beans. Haven't tried any of their pastries but they do look good. They have indoor and outdoor seating and drinks are made fast.

Yelp
Friendly service, nice ambiance, street parking only, but the coffee makes any con worth it. I try not to have much caffeine because of anxiety and the worker let me know there's a decaf option of the drink I wanted. I think it was cocoa with cinnamon?... the "Mexican Mocha" or something like that, and it was so good. I can't attest to their pastries/food items, but the coffee quality is great, it's inexpensive, and it's so nice to have a good coffee flavor even in the drinks with no actual caffeine. 10/10 recommend.

Yelp
Excellent latte made with Stumptown coffee. $550 for iced latte is reasonable I suppose. Friendly service. I'd return

Yelp
Was in the neighborhood, and found this place on yelp. I had Charcoal rose latte with oat milk. The latte was good, but not that great. They had nice outdoor seating, cute decorations. The customer service is good and friendly. The parking is street parking.

Yelp
#114 in my Coffeeshop Chronicles. Black Elephant is a hipster coffeeshop in Atwater Village. I loved the minimalist vibe of the artisan shop, with its bright interior and wood accents. I also enjoyed learning of the coffeeshop's backstory, and how the founders used an elephant as their logo because elephants are community-oriented animals, a perfect representation of the owners' goal of creating a community driven coffeeshop. Sadly, the small shop was cramped and overcrowded when I stopped by, and so loud that I could hardly hear myself think. I originally wanted to get some work done while sipping on lattes, but that was a non-starter. Still, I wanted to make the trek worthwhile so I ordered a few different options. The seasonal Apple Jacks matcha (matcha latte with horchata and Apple Jacks cereal) was decent. Though it sounded promising, I've had better matcha horchatas elsewhere. As for the peanut butter latte, it was a little too artificial tasting for my preferences and I had to toss it after a few sips. So even though the quality of the espresso was good (I believe they use Stumptown beans which I love), the flavoring was off-putting. So now I know.

Yelp
I've had the opportunity to try out this place a few times before and it never disappointed. If you're around the area, save the coffee for this place. They have indoor sitting, but it was mainly occupied by people busy on their computers and reading. For a Friday afternoon, the place was full. Chai latte was crafted well.

Yelp
First time in a long time coffee has made me comment out loud to myself how good it is. Tried their Bloody Charcoal latte and it's so bloody good I wish I had ordered the biggest size.

Yelp
I needed a spot to meet up with a friend, so I did a search on Yelp for Coffee Shops in Atwater and came across Black Elephant. This charming artisan café serves Stumptown Coffee, organic tea, healthy juices, pastries, sandwiches, & salads. A portion of sales proceeds go to support the World Wildlife Fund, and the murals of elephants on the walls contribute to the overall aesthetic. It's also a dog friendly establishment, which I love. When I walked in, I was greeted by the delicious smells of freshly brewed coffee. I scanned the bar code to check out the menu. I was impressed with the wide variety of beverages to choose from. Creative options such as Peanut Butter Latte & Raspberry White Chocolate Latte sounded enticing. They even have CBD Tea Lattes. I decided to keep it simple and went with a House Blend Drip ($3.85). It was strong, bold, & robust. Definitely an eye opener. Offering indoor & outdoor seating, this neighborhood establishment is popular with the locals. I saw a number of individuals walk by and stop to chat with a familiar face who was sitting outside enjoying their morning brew. *5% discount if you bring your own mug. *Cashless. Card only

Yelp
Been on my list to try for years and finally went on a busy Saturday morning. Got the ham and cheese croissant and barista recommended I try the horchata latte. Everything was... fine. Croissant tasted like it was nuked in the microwave instead of toasted and the horchata latte was swimming in milk - I couldn't taste any coffee whatsoever. I should've known when they don't add an extra espresso shot to get the 12oz instead of 16oz. Maybe that would've helped things? Tbh I didn't know I could even notice such things so maybe I AM a coffee snob as their menu denotes that kinda palette. Maybe I should've ordered from that section and had a better impression? Not a place I'd need to seek out again, but their business is thriving and surely won't miss me one bit lol. Everyone I encountered was nice and I can see why people make it their neighborhood spot.

Yelp
I highly recommend the lavender latte! It's not crazy sweet but delivers flavor. It's a nice afternoon treat and the server and barista were friendly and accommodating with non-dairy options. This is a relaxed cafe offering delicious custom beverages.
google avatar

Tumara S.

Yelp
I'm snobby when it comes to coffee shops and the ingredients that they use. They have high-quality coffee but do not use any homemade syrups except for Honey. I opt for powdered cocoa in my mocha to avoid mass produce syrups. It's a pet peeve of mine for coffee shops to rely on mass produce syrups rather than make their own homemade syrups. Black elephant just happens to be the best option in the area.

Yelp
Pros: -Cute interior -Great selection of drinks -Indoor and outdoor seating (plenty) Cons: -Came in and said it was my first time at Black Elephant and the barista did not care or offer any guidance. - Ordered the horchata latte and asked them to not overly sweeten it. It was extremely sweet. Service is mediocre at best. -Drinks look NOTHING like the photos on their website. They also do not provide any mugs solely to-go cups which is a buzz kill. I really wanted to like this place because they have so many drinks I'm interested in - Ube Matcha, Rose and horchata lattes to list a few. Idk if I'll come back though.

Yelp
Some unique latte choices, along with pastries or baked goods, a couple hot sandwich options which I was bummed due to the microwave being down, they said. nothing really stood out so I went with just an iced chai. The great place to meet up get a coffee and maybe chitchat. Make sure to plan your visit since it's on the corner of a main street with what looks like limited parking

Yelp
Coffee was amazing, vibe is great! Service is super friendly and it's right on the main drag in Atwater. Will be back.

Yelp
Cute little coffee shop with an easy, relaxed vibe. Baristas are knowledgeable and the coffee is perfect. Also enjoyed a tasty croissant. Great place to grab a quick coffee in the morning or sit and read or catch up with a friend.

Yelp
Service was quick and they have plenty of vegan options... get there early. Plus who doesn't love elephants?!

Yelp
Coffee is vital for survival. Dinosaurs didn't have coffee, and look how that turned out. ;D Now, let's begin this end-of-year review. Black Elephant Coffee is a midsize artisan coffee shop that serve Stumptown Coffee Roasters in Atwater Village section of LA. What I like is their passion for coffee, elephants and the environment. It's interior design and atmosphere resemble of the Serengeti Natl Park with a huge elephant mural, plants, round wooden tables/chairs and rattan dome lights. In addition, they have an outdoor patio with street view. I came here on a cool and cloudy Friday (12/30) morning to grab a coffee. It was my first time here so, I was quite elated. :D As you can see! I was met by a male barista as I entered the store, no welcome greeting whatsoever. I ordered a hot small - 8oz - Latte with whole milk. And it was good. Prices were fair and reasonable. Service was swift. Staff was cordial and professional, but grappling with a dearth of customer greeting. On the plus side there were ample of street/metered parking in the area. Overall, I liked my hot latte and had a modest experience. I recommend this coffee shop.

Yelp
Excellent cortado! Great service!! Would definitely come back again. Atmosphere is comfortable and inviting.
google avatar

Joseph C.

Yelp
If you order a normal sized espresso drink here, let's say an Americano (espresso + water), they use two shots of espresso and fill the cup with hot water. Cool. As it should be. And guess what happens if you order the same drink but the large size for $2.50 more? They take the same drink and just add more water to it. Does that even make sense? So a large drink is just a more diluted version of the normal sized drink. Brilliant.

Yelp
Friendly place for tasty coffee and treats! We love walking around Atwater Village and going to these local spots! Stopped by and saw they had a good selection of drinks and some baked goods. Staff were very knowledgeable. Searing available inside as well as an outdoors area. Parking on street but if you are familiar and comfortable can also park in the neighborhood a block away. Also free public parking but on the opposite side of Glendale Blvd. Oddly when we google this place the website redirects to the Burbank location. Probably they were just trying to promote the name change.

Yelp
The coffee was good before the pandemic, but not anymore. They are nice there and do give you your drink quickly. The place is small, not somewhere I want to sit down in as I feel pend in. It's very weird that they are cashless, which sucks, as why do I have to pay with a card and also end up paying double in service fees. Dumb! And it's also weird that even though they are cashless, they have a basket for cash tips, even though they don't want to touch money. It's weird. Just another way to steal from costumers just like with the service fee. Sucks I can't support a local business when they do that.

Yelp
Was in the area and wanted to grab a quick coffee to go. Came by and loved that there was outdoor seating , I ordered an iced Mexican Mocha with coconut milk. Pretty good! The barista was nice so great service. And loved the ambience inside, loved the aesthetics of the shop. If I'm ever in the area again I'll definitely bring my laptop with me.

Yelp
The staff at Black Elephant are exceptionally friendly always greeting customers with warm smiles and amazing service. The coffee is great as well, I highly recommend!

Yelp
Nice place i, like the sitting area on the side. Like the selections of tea they offer. Customer service is good.
google avatar

Yelp
It was so delightful to check this place out and find out they sell Stumptown coffee, my favorite! Between the fairly cramped indoors and the simple patio furniture, all in all it's a fairly no-frills experience. There's a lot of focus on and around sustainability, which is both refreshing and rewarding. Lovely offerings all around. I ordered one of their vegan muffins expecting something somehow less than the full-dairy version, but it was pleasantly moist and packed with fresh fruit. I ordered a cappuccino which came out mostly foam and less coffee, but all things considered, pretty tasty. There's ample place to sit out in their little outdoor area which cuts into the street, but is clearly cordoned off for cafe visitors.
google avatar

Kyle S.

Yelp
Prettyy good, pretty wood. The ambient wood really shines. Can't speak to the comfort as we didn't sit on it. But pretty good
google avatar

Kislev A.

Yelp
My old stomping grounds: Atwater Village!!! They have a whole patio section set up at the front complete with patio umbrellas for your dining pleasure. The line was short to order and it didn't take the baristas long at all to make 4 different drinks for us. ICED CHOCOLATE was great! ICED LATTE with Stumptown Coffee was strong and not milky at all. Love! BLUE BUTTERFLY MATCHA was a matcha drink with sweetener and cute blue edible flowers on top (cornflowers maybe?). We got ours with regular milk. Not sure what made it blue. MATCHA ROSE LATTE was a matcha drink made with almond milk, rose syrup and had cute edible rose petals on top. Metered parking all over Glendale Blvd.
google avatar

Yelp
Good coffee, lots of variations with unique flavors and ingredients Nice vibes would come again Parking sucks You might have to park in the neighborhood
google avatar

Alisa M.

Yelp
My favorite coffee shop in all LA area! Each drink I have had here is delicious. Their rose simple syrup has made very latte here taste like a garden dream. Not to mention the staff here is always so friendly. I had the pleasure of meeting one of the shop owners today, Gonzalo! This review is long over due, but I'm now finding myself treating myself to something from here once to twice a week.
google avatar

Janet M.

Yelp
Excellent coffee in Atwater! I enjoy drinking a Black Elephant Coffee first thing in the morning. Every time, lattes are served to perfection! I haven't had a burnt espresso shot since trying this coffee shop, which speaks a lot about them. Service is prompt and courteous. Make sure to pick up a treat at the exit if you're bringing your dog!
google avatar

Kim T.

Yelp
I came here to grab "coffee" with a friend and LOVED their menu! Such fun and creative drinks - I love me a good rose latte or lavender-vanilla concoction! This is definitely THE spot for a casual catch-up or a go-to when you're in the area! I ended up getting the blue butterfly matcha latte w/ almond milk and sweetened with vanilla. I appreciate the presentation - there were blue butterfly pea flowers on top of the drink, which oozes "AESTHETIC" and perfectly encapsulates LA in a drink! Haha. I can't wait to come back to try other seasonal drinks on the menu. See ya soon, Black Elephant!! xo
google avatar

Shannon M.

Yelp
I honestly don't know how this place has good reviews. This place is a joke! I called to get a simple egg and cheddar cheese on a CROISSANT and they did not have the cheddar cheese and she offered me to do a egg white, turkey and provolone sandwich. I agreed to it and when I went to go pick it up they told me that they didn't have any turkey so they made an egg white and pesto sandwich instead. I wasn't happy about it because I wanted the turkey protein. And she offered me pork, bacon or ham l, which I'm not a fan of. With reluctance, because i was starving, I finally agreed to the sandwich. I ended up paying $6.50 for a sandwich and $9.00 for a juice and when I opened it it was an egg white peso on an English muffin!! and that was microwaved! Gross! Honestly ridiculous!
google avatar

Barndi K.

Yelp
Great extensive list of cappuccino/ lattes and plenty of outdoor seating. Several baked goods options as well. Great neighborhood coffee spot!
google avatar

Jimmy D.

Yelp
Cool and hop coffee shop in a trendy area. Stopped off the freeway to grab a quick cold brew on nitro. Ordered at the door and they poured it right away. Wells balanced and not acidic. Very smooth. Will come back if I'm the area.
google avatar

Tiffany L.

Yelp
I really like this place for their variety of coffee and tea drinks. Also, their baked goods are delicious. I personally like their sautéed mushroom croissant and I would eat it almost everyday if I could. The one thing is I wish their drinks were consistent. Some would have a strong flavor for a signature drink and some wouldn't. Regardless, it is still good! They have really nice customer service and they even have treats for your pets by the door!
google avatar

Misty E.

Yelp
Small coffee shop in the heart of Atwater Village that caught my husband's attention, well more like his nostrils! The aroma of coffee pulled my hubby in despite me trying to pull him into several boutiques on the same block. He got an iced coffee and said it was really good! They offer a huge variety of options for any coffee, tea or hot chocolate lover. What's even nicer is they have pastries for sale and have a few vegan options! We came in the middle of the day and there were very few pastries so I wasn't able to get a vegan option unfortunately. Anyway, I like this place and we'll definitely be back, especially because a portion of their proceeds go to the World Wildlife Fund. Any place that supports animal and environmental rights is my kind of place!
google avatar

Sofya P.

Yelp
Chai latte was delish! Friendly staff at this coffee shop. Located right in the heart of Atwater village near all the shops. Parking is a bit difficult, depending on the time of day!
google avatar

Kelly D.

Yelp
Cute coffee shop along Glendale. They're still not open for indoor enjoyment, but their outdoor street patio set up is very spacious. They take your order at a distance at the door and I believe cash was not accepted. I got the Cold Brew on Nitro in the largest size for $6. It was everything I was looking for in a cold brew on nitro: balanced, no ice, not too acidic, strong flavors, smooth, with a nice nitro foam on top. It was nice strolling around the neighborhood with my coffee afterwards. If you're looking for coffee and in the neighborhood, Black Elephant is a great option.
google avatar

Jonathan R.

Yelp
Go somewhere else. They have no physical menu. You have to scan a QR code. My father couldn't see a menu because he's old and doesn't have a smart phone. They couldn't provide us with a menu at all. Not very smart for a business to not have a menu. They don't accept cash. Card only. This is classist. It's a way to keep working class and unhoused people from coming in. The last two times I went, they had no cold brew or iced coffee. There's way too many great coffee shops in the city to waste time at this place. It's just too unwelcoming a place.
google avatar

Melissa G.

Yelp
First time Trying this place, my friend picked it out and I had passed by it in the past and it was on my checklist. I am Glad I finally checked it out. The place is very welcoming. The staff was very sweet. There were so many drinks to choose from that sounded great, it was hard picking which one. I ended up getting the white chocolate raspberry latte. It was sooo good ! I liked that they had a little patio on the side. I definitely will be going back again ((;
