"It was a tough pill to swallow when local favorite brunch spot Black Eyed Susan's never reopened for the 2022 season, having mysteriously shuttered in October 2021."

Wow tucked away dining here it was like a breakfast show watching the two amazing chefs prepare food for a ton of people overflowing inside spurring out into a patio dining area outside. extremely busy tough location to park but absolutely amazing breakfast had scrambled eggs mixed with fresh broccoli potatoes and some light seasoning Curry with home fries wheat toast and of course a coffee with oat milk. Claire was my server we were sad at the bar and she did an incredible job set for one of the best breakfast I've ever eaten in Nantucket outside of cooking my own🤪

Google
Food was fantastic. Sat outside. Inside too hot to eat, but they accommodated us on the patio which was lovely.

Where do I begin! The coffee was absolutely delicious, the blueberry pancake tasted so fluffy and light, and the food was delicious! we were so pleased with our breakfast and service. The bar was so pleasant to sit at! We are going back this weekend after someone recommend the huevos rancheros to us!

Coming under new ownership, this spot has remained a Nantucket staple. Fantastic to get fish that really tastes fresh. Strong menu left me struggling to narrow down my choices! I definitely was ready to come back and order anything I did not get to try. Good portions and a casual environment for dinner. Make sure to book ahead as this place is certainly popular. I am excited to see what is to come for this spot and the return of breakfast!

Saw the reviews so figured I would try it out. There was a short wait on a Sunday morning to get a seat. Place is small. Sat at counter. Had a guy wait on us, he seemed a little grumpy. In any case, I ordered the sourdough french toast and it was awesome. As were the sides. Overall it was a great spot to eat. I enjoyed the food. Coffee was also good.

My girlfriend loves the restaurant and the staff provided excellent service and they are very friendly. They often checked in on us for food and water. My favorite dish was the fresh tomato pork curry. I was amazed by the creativity of the chef. It blends the authentic Asians flavors into the dish and presentation was on point. The spice was mild, pleasant and unexplainable like they dropped a magical pouch of goodness! I strongly recommend this restaurant for dates and family meet ups.

We have been going here for 30 years and returned for first time in a couple years. The atmosphere, food and service were great as always. However, the prices have sky rocketed, which impacted our enjoyment. After waiting about 40 minutes for a table (which we expected would be the case and were fine with it), my wife ordered eggs, hash browns, sausage and coffee. I had a scramble, hash browns, and a bagel with butter. No coffee. It used to be that toast was included in an order and a bagel was an upgrade that cost a couple dollars extra. Now, there is no toast included, which I did not realize. I ordered a bagel with butter and did not realize it would be a $10.50 additional charge. A coffee was $5.50. Breakfast for 2 came to about $75, with tip. There was no bagel on the menu and no price which added to my not realizing not only was a bagel not included but that it was $10.50 for a bagel with butter. While the bagel was good but not great, it was not worthy of the price. Let’s be real. Is a bagel with butter ever worthy of a $10.50 price tag? When I indicated my surprise when I received the check, the server responded that yes, it was the correct price. As noted, the food, service and atmosphere are great. Just be ready to pay up.

Oh the breakfast was delish! Service was awesome!

Yelp
It's a quaint coffee shop with a few stools at the counter and 5 tables. Get there early because it fills right up. There is always a line. I had a three egg while omelette with mushrooms and broccoli. As a side I had black eyed peas. The blue berry pancakes are their specialty. You have to see the size to believe it. The server took away my plate before I was finished. When I mentioned it to her. She pulled the plate out from under the counter. It had an extra fork on the plate. I don't think it was the most hygienic thing to do. Especially when there was additional silverware on the plate. I would still recommend this place for breakfast.

Yelp
Really great and affordable brunch on the island with some pretty unique offerings! Surprised by the low ish ratings so hoping to boost. BES was recommended to us by a friend who really enjoyed their spicy thai curry scramble so of course we got it. The curry was definitely on the lighter/subtle side and wasn't all that spicy - could've used a stronger kick but still tasty overall. We also had the breakfast sandwich which came out piping hot but was so good and fresh. The sauce was delicious. The sides of hash brown were so incredibly light, airy and fresh. They didn't leave us feeling heavy and were just perfect. We also had to try a side of linguica as we don't typically see those on brunch menus and they went so well with the hash brown. There was maybe a 15-20 min wait on a Sunday morning but our server was so sweet. We were pleasantly surprised by this meal and would definitely recommend.

Yelp
Our Server Jo was a sweetie and very patient with our group of 6. It was restaurant week in Nantucket and we made reservations for outside since COVID is now making a comeback. There were about 5 appetizers to choose from and about 6 entrees and then 1 dessert choice. I went with my sisters - two of whom are VERY picky eaters, one of them could not find any appetizer she would eat, and only one entree. But again she eats like a toddler, and no onions, no cheese, no ingredient she has never heard of, etc, etc. She did find an entree she liked (thank goodness). I had the squash hushpuppies which were delish, served nice and hot outta the fryer. My entree was the pork served over lentils..the Pork was fall apart tender - and there was a little but of spice to it. The portion was huge and I got to take 1/2 of it home. I do wish there was more than one dessert option, though the one they had was indeed tasty - it was like a chess pie. What I really loved about it was that they really had the salt to sweet ratio on point!

Yelp
Best hangover cure. Cured my chicken box blues. Thank god for these pancakes... EVEN MORE... thank god for the hash browns, they were a godsend. Dousing the pancakes in syrup and the melted butter is actually heaven on earth and everyone must eat here. Currently mouth watering thinking about it.

David S.

Yelp
We had breakfast at Black Eyed Susan's, and as always it was charming and yummy. I had the Portuguese scramble, while my had the French toast, made from actual French bread.

Katherine B.

Yelp
Been wanting to try this spot for a while right now because it's considered an island staple. Went on a whim and was wildly disappointed, overpriced and tasteless. Even the delivery was very unappetizing. Special looked good when delivered but didn't have much taste either, the risotto was good from the special. Hopefully breakfast is better. Service was great, just disappointed by the food.

Leah M.

Yelp
Sat at the counter and we were mesmerized by the chefs preparing breakfast for the patrons. I got the egg scramble special with asparagus, roasted red peppers and basil, with extra crispy hash browns and an English muffin. My husband got blueberry pancakes. Food was excellent, well prepared, and quick. All the ingredients were fresh, and our server Mariah was friendly and attentive. The place is cozy with a fun and relaxed atmosphere, great music selection. We are here for the weekend and will return tomorrow for sure!

Brian M.

Yelp
Ordered all the apps. Amazing tuna tar tar. The chefs were amazing and friendly- we at the counter and chatted them up a bit. The decor and mood, the lighting, all top notch. Excellent food!

Wendy K.

Yelp
A wonderful breakfast find near downtown. While on a business trip my colleague and I read good reviews on Yelp about the wonderful experience of Yelpers at this establishment. I'm pleased to report that we are adding our experience to the growing list. While we waited a long time (45 minutes) after being told it would be thirty minutes we finally were seated inside at a two person table. The serving staff was prompt and quickly brought us water while we reviewed the menu. Megan ordered the huevos rancheros and I got the vegetable scramble with tofu. We heard about their delicious pancakes so we ordered one with whipped butter and maple syrup on the side. I'm so glad that we did. It's was a perfect compliment to an excellent meal. I do highly recommend adding the pico de gallo to the tofu scramble meal. It makes it extra yummy.

Alexandra F.

Yelp
The best dinner on Nantucket. Hands down. Todd is an unbelievable chef, and I am so happy he is back on island. Gone are the days of cash only and lining up for reservations- snag a seat at the counter to watch the cooks work their magic!!!

Nicole S.

Yelp
This place was always an island favorite but under the new ownership... not so much. Food quality is the same as it's the same chef but prices went WAY up and portions went WAY down. Left hungry. Sad but won't be returning.

Marie P.

Yelp
Tiny breakfast Cafe with lots of local ambiance. Opens early (7am) when nothing else around is open. Food is good & portions are generous. $$$ ($50+ for 2), but that is typical for the island.

Susan D.

Yelp
Food was good although very limited menu. Very small cosy restaurant. Pleasing to some, cramped to others. BYOB. Felt rushed due to the 2 nightly seatings. Just not the good experience I expected.,

Meg C.

Yelp
Another local favorite tucked away in the upper part of town! The food is really good. Better than diner food but feels like home cooking. It is very small inside, they now have outside seating in the back too. There is usually a wait, but trust me its worth it. It can get a little warm inside though. HIGHLY recommend for breakfast. Their Huevos Rancheros are amazing and a bit different than your usual. We also love their blueberry pancakes! Parking is street parking. Casual attire.

Tom D.

Yelp
Please re-open!!! We miss your amazing breakfast! Hope that things get sorted out soon what ever it is.

Yelp
Racially Insensitive Behavior Black Eyed Susan's was one of my favorite places on the island. I heard that management changed and the place is not as good. I experienced this first hand and in the worst way possible. I had a 7pm reservation--this is the first reservation of the evening. I was the first one in the restaurant seated last night. I had a great seat. I chatted up the cook and told him I'm so glad that he came back. And I was seated at the lunch counter--the only seat for a single diner. The waitress seated two people to my left. There were two seats to my right. She tapped me on the shoulder and asked me to move down two seats--which put me at the end of the counter, next to the bathroom --you can smell the bathroom from the seat, next to the back kitchen where they wash dishes. And, now, I was in the shared space where the servers ring up checks. I'm black. I am single. I am a woman. I say this is racially insensitive because perhaps they have no idea how black people have been historically treated at lunch counters. I am the only black diner in the establishment. And you ask me to move down two seats so you can more comfortably seat a white couple? Why couldn't they sit at the two empty seats at the end of the counter. I sat there stewing for a while and then took action and asked for a different seat after much anxiety. She told me she had a party of six scheduled BUT there were over 12 empty seats at the counter. She refused to reseat me. The lunch counter was empty. I got up to leave and told the waitress why. She scoffed and waved goodbye--like "don't let the doorknob hit you" she never said that but that was how it felt. She then thought better of it and offered me a better seat. She sat no one in the seat where she tried to sit me all night. She sat no one beside me. No party of six came in. They treated me with barely concealed contempt all night. They seated no one in the undesirable seat by the bathroom where they tried to seat me. The food was delicious as usual but the experienced caused heartburn.....and heartache. I tipped 25% because why give them further reason to stereotype people who look like me. You will find that most of the bad reviews point to the service and the hostess--in the past they've been rude--this time I truly believe race was a factor.

Yelp
Cozy setting for a good and quick breakfast. Keep in mind the shop is small and almost always packed (always a good sign). I got a BLT on english muffin the day I went and was pleasantly surprised that it came with 2 delicious hash browns. Cash only, no ATM on site fyi.

Bryan L.

Yelp
A good eatery open for breakfast and dinner . We had delicious corned beef hash with eggs over easy and a Portuguese scramble fir breakfast ...The pancakes and French toast looked good on our neighbors plates. A couple of things to note-, cash only, tight quarters and the kitchen grille is directly across from the tables...also no a/c was on when we visited so it was a bit warm . Service was good., Joe Bob gives it a thumbs up for breakfast

Bradlie M.

Yelp
Delicious and well-priced BYOB dinner. The ambiance is cozy and comforting, and service was amazing. If you're sitting inside, you get to sit right by the small kitchen where your food is cooked - it adds to the home-like feeling inside, but definitely dress for warm temperatures. Will definitely be visiting again!

Nicole B.

Yelp
Awesome breakfast spot! Huevos rancheros we're amazing. Haven't had good huevos in years. Place was packed but they know how to get you in and out without feeling rushed.

Terrance N.

Yelp
An oval potato hash brown like the one at McDonald's but they don't deep fry them they griddle them with oil and it literally was like a sponge ... McDonald's are better ... also had a side of corn beef hash and it was off it had a sour smell and sour taste our waiter literally told us to go to the Downey flake ... $50 For 2 breakfast that we did not even eat or enjoy. Pre-cooked thin bacon like at Subway and toast was not even toasted such a shame.

M.G M.

Yelp
Some of the best omelettes, pancakes, eggs benedicts, and other breakfast items on Nantucket. A cool, small location with friendly staff.

Mk D.

Yelp
This restaurant is great but sadly is closed for the 2022 season. I hope it can re-open next year

Emily S.

Yelp
Is there an option for NO star? :/ The hostess was rude and the first thing she said was, "how many people-" no good morning/hello/how are you?! Did the manager not teach her any proper manners when greeting their customers? LOL she was not good at managing the waiting list, so some people who came wayyyy later than my group got seated before us (maybe they got a local people pass or somethin). Our waiter had no idea how to describe the menu when asked and completely forgot some of our orders.

David B.

Yelp
Be advised, there is always a wait for a table. (Longer at peak vacation breakfast times.) So naturally, the question comes: Is it worth the wait for a diner? The food at this old style diner is always great. Favorites among our family are the Portuguese scramble and the pancakes. It can get hot inside, so if you have the option to sit outside in back do that. FYI...Cash Only.

Joe C.

Yelp
It's a nice little restaurant but boy oh boy does it cramped inside. It's small. It's tiny. Eh, it's located inside a former house. There is table seating inside but a very long counter dominates half of the space. The cook(s) work in front of the counter so the counter patrons receive a slight show while dining. This restaurant is known for its breakfasts and brunches. I tried visiting for dinner at night but the restaurant was completely filled. Plus, I learned the dinner prices were kinda high. So I was happy to just eat breakfast there on the following day. Prices were much more reasonable for breakfast. During my visit, it contained a mix of locals and tourists. Cash only.

Peg R.

Yelp
Just had a fabulous breakfast at Black-Eyed Susan's. Huevos Rancheros were the best I've had on the east coast. And to top it off, a mystery benefactor came by and told our waiter he'd pay for our breakfast! Thank you to whoever you are!

Dave B.

Yelp
Can a hostess torpedo an experience? My gosh. The attitude and off-putting miserableness is gross. Hey owner! Step up and fix this. "Can I put my name in for a table? No, wait outside, I'll get to you when I get to you". Too bad because the cooks are working hard and the food is decent, but it's overshadowed by the shit attitude of the hostess. Go elsewhere. Ps. All the people waiting outside are shaking their heads in disbelief. PPS. You're welcome for 2 stars.

Pam Y.

Yelp
The wait was very long to get in, however as soon as you sit down and order food, the service becomes very fast and you get your food within 10 minutes. You can see the kitchen when you're seated because it's an open space. My omelette and my husband's omelette we're both good, this place is a diner

Frank G.

Yelp
My god, it's still there. What a breakfast we had there many, many times. The best on the island. Met the guys from , This Old House there. Great people. Long lines but worth it. Frank G

Robert C.

Yelp
Best breakfast on the island! An attentive staff and some of the best Eggs Benedict I've ever had. We were sat at the bar and enjoyed coffee and fresh cranberry juice with our meals. The only reason for subtracting 1-star is that there is consistently a wait (however worth it) and the hostess was not very welcoming.

Greg H.

Yelp
Egg dishes, no CC, HUEVOS rancheros with black eyed beans. Eggs Benedict was better. All was just ok. We ate in a side alley. Very careless service. They were doing us a favor to serve us.

Ralph Y.

Yelp
I know it's an island but one type of bread is a little odd, hash browns are the frozen patties from the grocery store. Prices for homemade food but diner quality.

Sue R.

Yelp
Stopped in for breakfast. We don't eat out much anymore because of Covid. The food was delicious however the service was poor. The person who seated us, served us and took our check was not a very nice human.

Steph S.

Yelp
We were grateful to find a place that serves vegan food and we're excited about the tofu scramble which 3 of our party ordered. They didn't scramble the tofu at all or even flavor it. They served warmed blocks of unflavored raw tofu. Please look into recipes for actual tofu scramble and try to make it flavorful and delicious as he had hoped. Tofu takes up the flavors it is cooked with but on its own doesn't taste like much of anything. We were all disappointed. The server was great and we enjoyed the ambiance.

James K.

Yelp
Host is rude, long waits even for 2 inside and they let locals cut the line. Food was not worth the hour wait. If your visiting go elsewhere and leave it to the locals, seems like what mgmt wants anyways.

Jessica S.

Yelp
Had a meal with some close friends here. Have never experienced such poor service at a restaurant. Clearly greedy management at work where a table for 12 is booked 90 minutes apart. A super rushed experience and at 7:31 for a 6pm reservation no fewer than 3 employees came to our table and aggressively told us to leave immediately. Maybe be less greedy and book your tables 2+ hours apart like every other restaurant instead of treating your customers paying $$$$ like crap.

Julie S.

Yelp
Been coming for breakfast as long as I can remember. Dreaming of the Dutch cakes and the Spicy Thai Scramble gets me through the doldrums of winter. Absolutely worth the wait in line. With so many things changing on the Island, the reliable, comforting meal at Black Eyed Susan's is a lifesaver!

Megan B.

Yelp
I love this restaurant, it has been my favorite for many many years. Sadly I have been disappointed. I went once last summer for breakfast during covid and it was fine. I went again two days ago and it was awful. The eggs were undercooked and what happened to your famous hash browns? If I wanted frozen hash brown patties I would have stayed home. The toast was even over done. Personally, (I have been in the service industry since my teenaged years)I would have been embarrassed to serve the plate I received. Not sure if the chef was tired or you hired someone differently but please help them to prepare a better $18.95 breakfast for one. I never mined paying that in the past, just make it so wonderful that I float out of one of my favorite places to eat on a cloud from above. Looking forward to a better meal. I won't give up!

Paul C.

Yelp
Food is excellent and service was quick. Lovely garden in back. Curry egg scramble to die for.

CT O.

Yelp
I was looking for a place to get a late breakfast and this place fit the bill. I got an omelette with cheese, tomatoes, and onion, nothing too special. The food wasn't anything too special. They only serve one kind of bread. I did like that I got to watch my food being cooked, but didn't like that I had to walk around with the fried grease smell on my clothes all day. I gave this place a 4 star because there was only one waitress and she didn't pay attention to any of the customers. I don't understand why the lady that seated me and gave me my coffee couldn't also take my food order. Other than that, the place was clean and the food was all right. WARNING: if you're getting onions get ready to get wedges of it.

M N.

Yelp
I understand it is an island but yet no reason for long lines in my opinion. The food is on the low quality side and the service and ambience are noting to write home about. Plus they only accept cash which is an added headache. Would not go back!

Lori B.

Yelp
This is our FAVORITE breakfast spot on Nantucket, and we have been coming here for many years. I highly recommend the huevos rancheros, and my daughter loves the French toast. Bring cash, as they don't accept credit cards. If you have a large party, they have patio seating, and you might share the table with another family.

Michael A.

Yelp
Not sure what the fuss is. Dinner is ok, if you like to stand in line to make reservations and eat yummy food in 110*. That's right. NO AIR CON and an open kitchen! Not for the menepausal .... breakfast is average only & lord knows you'll be lined up like cattle to the slaughter for scrambled eggs and stringy linquica sausage. It's an ACK landmark... resting on its laurels it seems. Enjoy & go home & take a cold shower. ( trust me you'll need it) Ps: no liquor license so byob.

Ana C.

Yelp
I don't know why this place is always so crowded. The food tastes like it's from a Denny's or Waffle House. Definitely not worth the wait and they put wayyyy too much butter on everything. Not to mention the hostess was not very welcoming.

Victoria G.

Yelp
This place deserves a higher rating. Breakfast was delicious. We ordered the pancakes, French toast, eggs, grits, and iced coffees. Probably one of the best pancakes I've had in a while. Not sure if all the bad reviews about the staff were warranted, but we did come during a pretty slow time and found the whole experience to be great!

Brianna F.

Yelp
Delicious food but not much space. Definitely better for small groups or counter seating. The hostess does a great job getting parties in to be seated. The waitress and guysanning the kitchen do a great job. I got the eggs Benedict and was very happy with it. The English muffin was well griddled and the ham was thick and eggs cooked perfectly. We got a side of corn beef hash for the table. This is not your canned red corn beef hah, it was Crenshaw made and from gray corn beef instead of red. So smooth, almost as if mixed with mashed potatoes instead of chunks of crisp home fries. The edges were crispy from the griddle and it was absolutely delicious. Highly recommend ordering the hash!

Geoff P.

Yelp
Black eyed Susan's was a good breakfast place. Eggs Benny was spot on. The hostess was eh... I walked right into the restaurant to inquire about putting my name on the list to be seated and was greeted with "wait outside, I'm not taking names". After waiting outside for 10 minutes the hostess came outside and took the names of who ever was standing in front of her. We waited for 15-20 minutes until our name was finally called. We were seated inside which was crowded but nice. The sever was good. The kitchen is located inside the dining area. Overall a pleasant experience despite the hostess and her attitude toward the patrons.

Vish P.

Yelp
One of the best brunch spots. We went during COVID times so had to wait a half hour and got outdoor seating. The menu is small but we ordered 4 dishes off the menu and they were all amazing. Thai scrambled eggs is amazing and so is the Eggs benedict. Would go back for the Huevos Rancheros and dinner.
