The Best Coffee Grinders, According to Baristas and Coffee Roasters - Eater

"At Black Fox Coffee, there is only one grinder we sell on the shelves, and that’s because we think it’s the best option out there for both home use and for travel. The U.K.-made Aergrind, according to Kris Wood, former coffee director at Black Fox Coffee, has a high-quality burr set honed to precision, giving a uniform grind size that delivers coffee of the highest caliber." - David Notis

Google
Hardly any standing room, no bathroom, we stopped for a non Starbucks NY coffee experience. Staff was fine. Drinks are different — we had a sesame chai, espresso with tonic water and lemon, butterscotch latte, and will try a vanilla date latte next time. It doesn’t feel like an establishment. But is a sophisticated pop up coffee feel.

Google
Super friendly and their cappuccino is always a good idea. They talked through tasting samples and provided recommendations for other coffee shops to try throughout my day.

Google
I LOVED IT. It’s a pity that it’s a small place and they don’t have enough space to sit, but the star is their coffee of course! I just had one of my best flat whites in NYC, great quality, smooth, velvety foam and for a relatively good price. Staff was super kind and friendly. Add it to your list, you’re welcome;)

Google
Not the best coffee, service is excellent. Pastries with games are too sweet for me...

I love coming here! I come almost every single day, but within the past couple times I came to the shop IT HAS BEEN FREEZING IN THERE!! I can see my own breath as I am ordering my coffee. I can not even understand how the employees are able to withstand this cold. Other than that my favorite is the butterscotch latte!! To die for!!! a MUST TRY!! but please fix the heat in there!!!

Google
This location is pretty hidden and easy to miss if you are walking on the other side of the street, we looked for it for 10 minutes! The coffee is really good and the staff is nice. They have specialty and single origin coffee. The specials can be pricer (7.50). Proper barista machine and barista skills. Got a savory scone, too, which it was a bit bland although the cheddar. If you look for a break away the chaos, this is a nice corner where you can relax (there are a couple of tables outside). Cons: they only serve coffee in take out cups :( I would expect a more environmental friendliness option in this place (where attention to detail seems high).

Google
I was an Aussie on a mission to find a good coffee. This hadn’t popped up on any recommended lists, but I simply walked past and knew it looked promising. And boy did it deliver! Can tell they care about the coffee they make and their customers. Was some of the friendliest service I’d seen in this city, and a smooth, rich, very enjoyable latte. Thank you!

Google
The interior design is gorgeous, and the service is pretty quick. I had the maple pecan latte, which I loved. It’s connected to a gorgeous lobby where you can sit to sip your coffee if you feel like it.

Yelp
My New Love Affair: A Cortado & a Moment of Peace Tucked into a quaint little corner of NYC, I stumbled upon what can only be described as a hidden gem -- Black Fox Coffee. And in this charming haven of calm and caffeine, I discovered a new love: the cortado. I don't say this lightly, but I'm convinced this comforting, perfectly balanced beverage was specially curated for me -- a working, over-analyzing mom just trying to make it through the chaos with some grace (and a whole lot of caffeine). The vibe here is everything -- cozy yet elevated, with just the right amount of buzz and quiet. It's the kind of place where your thoughts can finally exhale. The staff? Warm, intentional, and clearly proud of what they're serving -- no rushed energy, just real coffee artistry. When life starts spiraling, remember this: caffeinate and tolerate. Then woosah yourself over to Black Fox. Your nervous system (and taste buds) will thank you.

Yelp
Black Fox is a specialty coffee company born from the founders' desire for a better café experience. Founders Daniel Murphy and Gary Hardwick were unimpressed with their daily coffee options so they created their own including full-service cafes, espresso bars, and a roastery that honors their mission to make remarkably good coffee. As one of the few multi-roasters in New York City, Black Fox sources and curates global coffee. With strong, bold, and fresh coffee, along with plenty of space to work, Black Fox Coffee makes life easy for those in need of both excellent coffee and a productive environment. "Black Fox Coffee boasts the best day-to-day coffee selection of any shop in the city, featuring coffees from a variety of esteemed roasters worldwide." - EATER NY

Yelp
We stopped by recently for a morning coffee. A pretty small shop with minimal seating but very friendly staff! Don't think it's much of a sit down coffee shop, but much more of a grab and go. I got a cortado, and it was decent. Acidic notes, but overall quite a smooth taste. A bit too much steamed milk for my taste. Will be back if I'm in the area and need a caffeine hit!

Yelp
Cute coffee shop! This is a NY specific chain and there was a lot of hype around the coffee. I ordered a sesame chai latte (so not actually a true coffee / latte), but really liked my drink. Would definitely come back for one of their specialty drinks. Note that it's a popular location and service can be pretty backed up.

Sunny Y.

Yelp
I ordered the Butterscotch Latte and was seriously impressed. They make their butterscotch sauce from scratch using dark brown sugar, vanilla, and coconut milk, which gives it a rich, nutty flavor that's perfectly balanced not overly sweet. You can really taste the quality and care in each sip. Definitely a standout drink, and one I'll be coming back for.

Yelp
Busier than usual but nonetheless the quality of their latte is second to none. This is my go to coffee stop besides culture coffee (who also have delicious cookies) in the midtown area.
google avatar

Shreya T.

Yelp
Tons of fun, sweet-sounding drinks--just my kind of place. It's strictly grab-and-go with no real seating, so keep that in mind. I loved the butterscotch latte.

Yelp
This was probably my favorite coffee place on my recent trip to NY. The interior is so modern and minimalistic. And their iced matcha latte with oat milk is amazing. Highly recommend if you're in the area. Service is efficient.

Yelp
Black Fox's coffee is pretty good, but not exceptional. However, I do love that they sell beans from international beans like Coffee Collective (Denmark) or Square Mile (UK). Definitely grabbed a fresh bag of Square Mile beans while I stopped by and hope that I can enjoy them when I'm home. COLD BREW - 5.50 Not sure if it's worth dropping 5.50 on cold brew because you can literally at any direction for 5 minutes and can probably find somewhere cheaper. However, the quality is pretty good as it is less acidic and more of that nuttiness and chocolate flavors. Overall, a solid medium roast that both my friend and I enjoyed. This Black Fox location has a small interior but a couple tables outside that you can sit at if it's not too cold. Otherwise, definitely more of a grab & go spot compared to the Black Fox location on 45th street.

Yelp
Food (3/5): Iced latte with almond milk was a bit weak and flat for me - didn't really taste the espresso. There was a small selection of pastries - one of which was gluten free (a lamington) but did not try it. Service (3/5): Cashier wasn't really paying attention and got my order wrong at checkout so I had to repeat my order. Ambience: N/A - it's a tiny store meant for grab-n-go. The latte was almost $8 before tips, so I will not go out of my way to try another one.

Yelp
We had a 1 hour wait for our LIRR so we walked over to the Yelp recommended coffee venue and were not disappointed. Small hole in the wall connected to a fancy pants hotel. Some cool items on the menu but we got our usual. The iced oat latte was rich and flavorful. Sometimes it's diluted or the coffee doesn't stand out. Was very happy w theirs. We also got one with vanilla syrup which they make their own. It was definitely noticeable and less artificial tasting. We will definitely come back. Was worth the walk from Penn station!

Yelp
This coffee shop is nearly tucked away, so tucked away that it's easy to miss at first. After walking in, I could tell immediately that the coffee was going to be good. I don't know how to explain it, maybe it was the interior design or sleek branding, but I had a good feeling, and I was right. I loved my latte and only knocked off one star because wow it is pricey! This will have to be a once a week pick me up.

Yelp
Nice, cute coffee shop to stop by at and grab something to go! They have wonderful flavors here as well - I tried the honey blossom flavor (1 pump) and it was delicious. One thing to note, there isn't room inside to sit and lounge, it's more of a grab and go coffee shop.
google avatar

Jessi C.

Yelp
A very small shop that can be hard to miss with limited space and no seating. The baristas were so nice! I ordered an oat milk latte and it was a bit lacking for the $8 price tag. There didn't seem to be enough espresso at all - probably would not order this again since it tasted like I was drinking straight oat milk. The drink also had a lot of space at the top and I wish they filled it all the way. The plus is that it is a quick walk from Penn Station.

Yelp
This is one of those hole in the wall places that just has impeccable quality. While there is only one seating option out front, it is connected to the Pendry hotel lobby that provides a few small tables and it's nestled in Manhattan West with many other places to enjoy your coffee (perhaps not on a rainy day like today!) The coffee was hot and delicious, and I also ordered the olive oil bundt - highly recommend.
google avatar

Darina H.

Yelp
What a cute little coffee shop! They have all the essential coffee / tea items here that one would need for a grab and go. Though I wish there were more seating indoors (because of the cold NYC temps), there were some outdoor seating options available. The customer service was great, I ordered a double espresso and it was PERFECTION. Would recommend and come back again!

Yelp
Small but quality addition to this still developing area with many new places opening. Located in the lobby of some fancy-ass hotel, this spot features some high quality brew. The cortado was spot on perfection, and the coffee is excellent. The pastry selection was small and looked promising (from a King Street Bakery), though I found the banana bread I tried a touch too sweet and sugary (though blissfully raisin-free). Cute but tiny interior--wouldn't be a sit down spot even without COVID, but a couple of outdoor tables to sit if need be (and lots of courtyards nearby). My office is right in this area, and we are back in the office at least part-time, so I find this to be an incredibly welcome addition, especially as they are planning late hours (currently 7a-9p as a trial now that they are open), I think largely to cater to hotel guests. But when (if?) we get back to more normal workflow that will be amazing, as I often wish coffee shops stayed open later. I'm sure I couldn't afford to go as high end as this hotel, but I'll definitely go slightly high end for coffee this good.

Yelp
If you're in the area and want a memorable cup of coffee with some bomb service, here it is. This location has a very small storefront and is attached to a hotel but has big personality. The menu isn't too long so you know they make whatever you order well. I ordered the butterscotch latte which was a seasonal item and it absolutely hit the spot. It was recommended to me by the barista and I definitely enjoyed it. A friend of mine had the same thing and we both were in agreement that the sweetness level was a great balance, not too sweet but enough to give you the hints of butterscotch. I will say the only thing that might cause hesitation is the price but if you appreciate a good cup of coffee you won't regret it.

Yelp
I enjoyed this little cafe tucked away on the side of the Pendry Hotel. It's a chic quick grab and go since there's no space inside except for a few tables outside the cafe. The coffee itself was pretty good but pricy, and you'll probably want to stay away from pastries unless you're desperate for something quick. I wanted to like this spot for the modern style and look but besides the coffee; the service and pastries were at best mediocre.

Yelp
Our favorite coffee (flat white and iced cappuccino) we had during our New York trip. For reference, we had Culture 36 (2nd fav), Hungry ghost, Whistle and fizz, Pulley coffee Chelsea, Joe Coffee, Bird and Branch.

Saleh A.

Yelp
The coffee is sour! Had an espresso and it's probably one of the worst I've had in my life. Also overpriced but most importantly it's not good coffee.

Yelp
Black Fox Coffee is so good. The employee that waited on me was super nice. The place is just the right amount of fancy. It's clean and they keep the customers moving. I really enjoyed sitting outside. It's a little cold out when you are near the Hudson River. I'm really enjoying the coffee. I'd definitely be here daily if I worked nearby and had a six figure salary. A small black drip coffee is $4.36! The Most I believe I've ever paid for a small drip coffee! I'm recommending......

Yelp
This place is small and has some outdoor seating but mostly a place to takeout. The entrance is a little hidden so be aware. I got a flat white with a croissant and it was lovely. They didn't have as many food options as I had thought but the croissant was also great. I personally loved that you could watch the baristas make the coffee and they had mirrors that really lit up the space.

Yelp
Literally the BEST coffee (specifically: Latte) I have ever had. We have travelled all across the coffee looking for the best lattes and this is it. Go.

Eric S.

Yelp
Coffee was above average but nothing too special. For $6 for a 16oz coffee it better be the best coffee I have ever had in my life. Plenty of other options in NYC for better, less pricey coffee. The interior space is well-decorated but small with no seating. Don't go here if you're expecting to be able to sit and enjoy your coffee or do some work. It's a grab and go spot. Service was standard, nothing to call out in either direction.
google avatar

Stephanie D.

Yelp
Good! But I feel like all of the coffees in this area taste the same (blue bottle, black fox, bluestone (x3 locations just in Hudson yards) I got a latte and it wasn't super memorable but I didn't dislike it. Maybe the caffeine could have been stronger....
google avatar

Jeany Z.

Yelp
Conveniently opened right next to my office! I stopped by for an almond croissant (might ask for it to be warmed up next time) and a cold brew (the oat milk/almond milk/regular milk is available on the side). Prices are a bit hefty, but pretty standard for the area. The croissant was amazingly flakey and crisp with almond filling in between - just enough that it wasn't numbing sweet or heavy. $6 though. Next time, I'd like to try the olive oil cake and the sesame chai seasonal drinks.
google avatar

Suzanne B.

Yelp
Walked passed this place several times since returning to the office and decided to give the coffee a try. After getting over the fact that a 16oz coffee costed $5 i found the coffee extremely disappointing. I generally prefer pressed to filtered but have had many good cups of filtered coffee. That said, the coffee was weak and had a citrus note in the background that doesn't work. Also, they probably should boil the water. Coffee has specific temperature to ensure the best flavor comes out. I understand this is a high rent district but sheesh. Won't be returning.
google avatar

Brandon B.

Yelp
The black sesame chai latte was, by far, the best chai that I've had in New York City. I ordered it hot, despite normally going for an iced chai, but it was absolutely fantastic. Definitely recommend if you're in the area!

Ella B.

Yelp
Very good coffee and AMAZING service!!!!! They are so nice. Their iced vanilla date latte is super good
google avatar

J Z.

Yelp
Friendly staff. Cute local. Watery Coffee. Both drip coffee options (Honduran and Ethiopian) were not very flavorful. Tried them both black and they didn't have much aroma and were pretty watered down.

Vida R.

Yelp
A cool place for morning coffee or afternoon tea. A wide selection of coffee and tea varieties, delicious pastries and friendly staff make this place ideal for relaxing and socializing. I recommend Black Fox Coffee to anyone who appreciates high-quality coffee and a cozy atmosphere.
google avatar

Conor H.

Yelp
I'm a big fan of the other Black Fox locations, so I was happy to come across this new Hudson Yards location. The beautifully designed space was small but didn't feel cramped. I ordered an excellently prepared oat milk cappuccino and had a nice chat with the barista. I'm looking-forward to the next time I'm in the area to try a filter or ice coffee!
google avatar

Krysta A.

Yelp
The black sesame chai latte was made perfectly. It was creamy, and with the oat milk it was not too, though I wish the black sesame taste was more prominent. I'm giving it 3 stars because the price was outrageous, after taxes and tip I think it came out to almost $8. Nice place though although note that there are no indoor seating.
google avatar

Mark V.

Yelp
We tried the butterscotch latte both hot and iced with oat milk. The oat milk definitely took away some of the flavor of the butterscotch, but the coffee itself was beautifully silky with a delicious micro foam.

Abe R.

Yelp
Good drip coffee and espresso drinks.

Alex J.

Yelp
incredible array of coffees from the US, Canada and Europe, delicious food, great service.
