Black Jack

If you are coming to Black jack or Pearl dive make sure you ask for Eddie. His accommodations to my family really made our happy hour experience that much better. The bar area of Pearl Dive was busy but he was able to get us a table upstairs and still the perks of the HH menu. Everyone was happy and he made a really good Old Fashion. All the food was good but the wood grilled oysters were a hit. I can’t wait to come back soon!

I had a lovely time here at Black Jack, upstairs from Pearl Dive Oyster Bar. The downstairs was incredibly crowded but luckily upstairs had a much more spacious and classy vibe. Cool red leather decor, high ceilings, very attentive bar staff, and delicious food. I was really impressed and happy I stumbled in here. I will definitely be back as soon as I am in the area to try their full menu!

I had the best solo date here. Cam the bartender was awesome. I told him it was my first time he made me feel like a regular. I was amazed at his bartenders skills . Everyone from the door guy to severs were welcoming. The oyster was bomb. Please try the mussels phenomenal. Thanks so much for the wonderful experience on a solo date.

Fun spot but don't open a tab at the bar upstairs. Bartenders upstairs will actively add random other customer orders to your tab without your knowledge and refuse to correct it. When I called them out on it, they told me to "just don't leave a tip then". Close your tab after every drink and double check the amount they charge you. My 3 beers turned into $100+ real quick.

Sketchy place. Left my wallet at the bar by mistake and pretty much positive the bartenders stole my cash. When asked if it was left at the bar or returned, they were clearly lying. The short Hispanic bartender acted like he didn’t understand and then looked for the tall white guy with a beard, who went off for way longer than necessary to ‘look’ for it but he was just standing around doing who knows what. I have lost a wallet before and obviously knew random people stole stuff, but this was clearly just left at the bar right as I closed my tab so the bartenders would have taken it. They were definitely in on it and just sketchy all around. Sucked to have this experience after enjoying the affiliated restaurant which is right below. FYI, I had a fantastic meal at Pearl Dive right below, which has the same menu. So I don’t want this to reflect Pearl Dive. I’m specifically referring to the bar Black Jack upstairs.

Some of the best bar service in the area! Friendly staff and friendly people to hang out with and talk about anything. The food is super excellent here as well if you are in a snacking mood.

Never been here before, but definitely will return. They have all day happy hour on Sundays, which is nice to have. I stepped from the happy hour burger to the Dive Burger. And man! It was delicious. I really like the fries, it seemed like they added rosemary or some herb to give it a nice taste and it was crunchy. The bartender we had was very nice and attentive. Definitely likes his one earring and sense of style. It also a cool spot to hang with a group at the couch area. And the tables are set up to have pizza to share.

Ok lets talk about BJ. Not that bj. Black jack is great. Good mix of music and the bartender both eddie and cam are amazing. They really give the place the life it needs. Drinks arent crazy expensive for DC and they are actually GOOD. I always find myself having a fantastic time here.

I went to Black Jack and was pleasantly surprised but just how delicious their food is. Everything we ate was "chefs kiss." Not only were the food and drinks delightful the servers were soooo good! Great customer service can be hard to come by and the bar tenders/waiters were very attentive, gave excellent recommendations, and were a good time! We lucked up on parking spaces as this area is notorious for poor parking availability. If you want a good drink, yummy eats, and good vibes, pay them a visit. It's great for groups or small parties. There are TVs throughout the venue for sports watching, too! I will be back! The bonus is that it is Black-owned.

Grabbed a few drinks & an appetizer with a friend at Black Jack on Saturday since Pearl Dive's bar was full! I was happy to realize the menus are almost the same. Black Jack's Saturday happy hour is 3-5 pm and happy hour is all day on Sunday! I ordered an $8 HH dirty vodka martini, $7 HH chargrilled oysters & a $15 espresso martini. The staff is so friendly at both Pearl dive and black Jack. They even gave us a shot on the house to end our meal! Great energy in the establishment, looking forward to coming back for more happy hour bites and drinks soon!

This was our favorite spot in DC. The happy hour menu is great deal, staff all super friendly, music is great. Freshest oysters and mussels were fantastic.

Had a great experience at Black Jack on Saturday night! Snagged a seat at the bar and spent an enjoyable evening with Eddy the bartender. He was extremely friendly, hardworking, attentive, and helpful! The downstairs Pearl Dive section was bustling, so the bouncer suggested we try upstairs. Vibes were a little quieter where we could sit and talk early afternoon. With dim lights, great music, and funky decor we knew were gonna have a good time. We grabbed some espresso martinis - these were SO good! When we told Eddy how much we loved them, he suggested we try his tequila infused martini! He explained how he soaks coffee beans for months and let us try - WOW! Every drink this man created was better than the next. As the night went on, we even tried the "mystery" drink which was a smoky dark liquor named "maybe the best drink of my life." We tried a few apps as well - a fan favorite were the lobster Rangoon! I was excited to try this unique twist, and did not regret it YUM. The cheese dip, blackened shrimp, and the pepperoni pizza were also great choices. Overall, I had a 10/10 experience all thanks to Eddy! I will for sure be back very soon!

I visited Black Jack on a Saturday night around 10 PM with three other ladies with the intention of eating dinner. We tried this place because one of my friends raved about the food, specifically the mussels. There was a gentleman checking ID upon arrival, and we headed upstairs to find a table. The walls were red with decor that included things you'd see in a card game. The environment was definitely your typical bar setting with pop and hip hop music playing and limited seating upstairs to dine in. Luckily, we were able to find a table near the rear section and bar. Unfortunately, we had to place orders for food at the bar, as there was no wait staff like in a traditional restaurant setting walking around to tend to tables. This made it challenging to order food because of the crowd, wait time to get to the bar, and noise level. I also had to provide my card to pay once the bartender put the food order in versus being able to pay at the end of my meal. I ordered the lobster ragoons and fried oysters initially, and decided to put in a separate order for an oyster po boy, since I enjoyed the appetizers. My friends ordered steamed mussels and gumbo. They really seemed to like the mussels and bread and thought the gumbo was decent (the friend that ordered gumbo had family from Louisiana, and was used to that type) However, my food was delicious and I LOVED the lobster ragoons. In hindsight, I would've tried to arrive a little earlier to eat at Black Jack, but loved the food. I also thought the music selection was pretty good, the restroom (The location had two individual unisex restrooms) was well stocked and clean. I'd choose a different environment for dinner and conversation, but def. recommend if you're looking for music, drinks and good food.

There is no signage from the street, so just match the door to the address or just go through the door to the left of pearl oyster if you are facing it and go up the stairs. This place was popular on a Friday night but there was enough room to be comfortable with your group or date. We intended to go to Tilt and thought this bar was Tilt but it was Black Jack. Still don't know how to get to Tilt. Lol The Thyme to Drink cocktail is a tiki cocktail. It is tasty. I enjoyed the dance music they played. I wish I knew what station they were playing or the playlist. It seemed pointless to have the football game going on in the background since you couldn't hear it and the music was taking over. I think them showing music videos would have been better.

Food and service was great. Me and my friend sat at the bar. The bartenders were super friendly and recommended good drinks to us. The food was great. I loved it there. Would definitely come again.

This was a stop along our whiskey walk ! It was pretty crowded but we found a table where we could sit down and enjoy our food and drinks. Our new friend Damion- who we met during the whiskey walk- recommended we try the oysters from Black Jack! So we did ! Babe ordered a dozen oysters (2 of each of the following): WAR SHORE, BLUE POINT, CAPE MAY SALT, N JACK POINT, BELLE DU JOUR, CHUNU! We didn't know which oysters were which because the runners just dropped them off at the table and run away- so we couldn't really ask any questions. But we know we liked the ones to the left of the forks (if you're looking at the photo) the most ! they created a very delicious marinade for the oysters, which makes it very easy to dress them. I realize a lot of people don't know how to dress oysters that well... And that might be a reason they don't like them. You don't need much, but if you find a place with a good marinade, that makes everything so much easier! This is the place to go for a delicious marinade !! Although they didn't come to take the order, They did come by to clear the plates very quickly, which was a plus, and when they did that they took a drink order for my boyfriend. And he said he would come back for mine and never came back. This is the reason for the three. But the oysters were good, and our taste of whiskey at this location was good... That was the only drink I got they could've made more money how they took a drink water from me, but that's neither here nor there. The type of whiskey they were serving for this venue was the Bushmills. The ambience was cool... Kind of dark, lighting and very loud. The music was definitely a vibe! There were people going in and out of the back room, which we don't know what it actually was but I'm guessing it was some sort of game room or additional dining! Overall a fun lively venue and we recommend the oysters now too !!

This place understands it! The food, drinks, service and experience is a ten! Came here on a Friday with my boyfriend and I'm having a good time! (Had to Yelp in real time for this spot!) Our experience here is great! Please, get here during happy hour because even though the experience is great the food and drinks are a little pricey! I had their catfish Po'Boy with fries and their specialty sauce, and it was too good! My boyfriend had the mussel and shrimp and grits and his only complaint is he wanted MORE! I can't wait to come back to this spot and try their other drinks and food! Our waiter Telly was great, thank you so much!

Came here for the happy hour with friends. Ended up being a pretty expensive bill so it wasn't quite good as of a deal as we thought it was going to be As part of the happy hour we ended up getting the margaritas which were just fine. The food itself was typical bar food and nothing amazing. They ended up giving us an extra pizza order which we didn't ask for but ended up on our bill. It was Mildy annoying but not sure why that happened I didn't want to take the trouble to send it back. The pizza's themselves were just okay. We also had mussels and they were just okay. Service is quite slow. We went in the middle of the week and there were not a lot of people being served. Parking is on the street. Typically you have to pay for it but I was lucky enough to find a good free spot Ambiance is nice. Lots of spacing between seats so you can have a private conversation with your group of friends. The bathroom was clean. Overall I'm glad I tried it, I don't think I would come back.

From the moment we walked to the door we were greeted with friendly service! I was there to celebrate a new job promotion and the host alerted the staff and our table was gifted with a complimentary champagne toast. So very thoughtful!! Out server Roxy was absolutely the best! She provided great recommendations as it was our first time at Blackjack. We ordered the gumbo, blackened catfish, Addies mussels and shrimp! For dessert we had the bananas foster and key lime pie! Food is fresh and savory. Will definitely return and hope to have Roxy again!

Eddy made us the best espresso martinis ever and recommended the muscles and rockfish bites both incredible but eddy made our night ten out of ten

Blackjack is the upstairs bar above Pearl Dive Oyster Bar. Great for a date night on the weeknights or going out on the weekends. They have my all time favorite espresso martini in DC

We had the absolute best time!! Blackjack had the best music & played nothing but hip hop all night. The atmosphere was so great, it was very packed but we still had a great time! The drinks were delicious with a very casual ambiance! Thank you Josh for hooking it up and providing great customer service. I look forward to visiting again

The bouncers here are quite frankly the worst people to ever exist. They assaulted my 5'1 friend, it was 1:45am and they screamed at me to leave while I was finishing a drink. I wasn't allowed to use the bathroom before I left and I basically got pushed down the stairs. It was absolutely ridiculous. They poured out my friends drink and honestly in my 5 years of living in D.C. I've never been treated like this. Don't go here unless you want to be assaulted and degraded.

Great place for happy hour. No outdoor space though. It becomes really crowded, loud, and filled with 20-30 something's by 9pm.

With no intentions of visiting this place, it was an after dinner (conveniently located) decision which ended up being a vibe. We sat at the bar, had a great drink and even better conversation. The decor is real interesting but cool, fun, and vibrant with a variety of seating options to accommodate any size party. Lengthwise, the establishment is a decent size but it's easily noticeable that by the location of the stairwell that it can get pretty congested and crowded at times. There are two unisex restrooms crammed into a tight space but serves the purpose. There is great size bar, good drinks, friendly bartenders.... but the music selection needs work. Since we just had dinner downstairs at Dive Oyster Bar, we didn't order any food so only spend limited time there... 3 stars seem appropriate. After all, a bar must have a good vibe, good drinks and GREAT music.

Finding the best happy hours in DC with my friends comes with a certain level of pressure, but Black Jack was a big win on a rainy Wednesday night! It is not terribly close to the Metro, but I don't mind a 15 minute walk to a delicious happy hour. With the bonus of serving happy hour throughout the restaurant and not just at the bar, I was excited before I even picked up a menu. The happy hour specials here were great for both food and drinks! I loved the Frosé (HH $8), and I could have enjoyed another easily on a warm day. For food, my friends and I split the Chips and Cheese (HH $7), Addie's Mussels (HH $11), and the Swine Lovers Pizza (HH $7). All of the food was delicious, although the Swine Lovers was too rich for me to have more than one slice. The cheese for the chips and cheese was delicious and the chips were salted perfectly. The mussels had a really unique sauce and were some of the biggest mussels I have ever seen. When we ran out of chips for our dip and bread for our mussel sauce, we were even given refills!!! Our server was great, and she did not pressure us to move along once we finished eating and drinking. We look forward to returning soon!

This bar is connected to the restaurant Pearl Dive. I only ate food in the bar but I got the meatball pizza as well as the spicy shrimp pizza. HH prices have $5 wine and half off draft beer. Pretty good deal! The spicy shrimp pizza was good but I really liked my meatball pizza. All the pizzas have a very thin crust so one person can easily eat a whole on their own (in my opinion). Our waitress was friendly and the place wasn't too busy (we went on a Wednesday so I can't attest to the weekend rush). Love the decor and vibe of his place! I had a glass of house wine which was fine and in lieu of the lychee frozen margarita (which was not available) I got the hurricane frozen drink which was a peachy, orangey rum frozen drink and was actually very nice and not overly sweet! The hurricane is not on their current menu so you may have to request it:)

I'm a huge Black Jack fan. It's a fun, happening place with good food and drink. I like the exposed brick and big windows overlooking 14th Street, along with the dimly lit bar. Sunday afternoons are my favorite, due to their happy hour. I've also been on weeknights and most recently, a Saturday night. I was quite surprised by Saturday night--it was packed, with a line to get in. The crowd was really not my style, but the music was on point. Like, you could've had a dance party in here. I was surprised by that as well. Sundays and weeknights are fairly chill. I can't speak to their cocktails, but I do like the wine list, and tend stick to that. The pizza is great and oysters are fresh. The spicy shrimp and green goddess pizzas are my favorites. I want to try their chicken bucket. Service has been hit or miss, sometimes friendly, sometimes not. I highly, highly recommend Black Jack.

Why we like Black Jack 1) It's part of the Black Restaurant Group, so you know the food is going to be good. 2) You can order anything from the Pearl Dive Oyster Bar menu. 3) Less crowded than downstairs. 4) Great happy hour. 5) Addies Mussels FTW. 6) My partner will go on tilt if I reveal reason #6, but it's a good one.

Amazing cocktails and food!! One of the few bars that scores well in both categories. I love their Daisy Chain cocktail - Vodka, Eldenflower, Lime, Lemon, Sugar, Sparkling Wine. Refreshing for a nice hot summer day. I LOVE their mushroom white pizza - you can actually taste the truffle oil and it's not greasy. Highly recommend! Gets crowded on Thurs and weekends, but you'll be able to grab a table.

What's the secret password? That's how I felt when entering the little black entrance door with no name or address attached. You DEFINITELY have to know where you're going because this lounge gets NO walk up business.. lol. Once you do figure out where you're at, you have to walk up about 30 steps and POW you're pleasantly surprised. This is a rustic spot with distressed hardwood floors and exposed brick walls. My kinda look! It's small but yet big enough to grab a bite or a planned HH like the one Elite Yelper Mary K. put together for her Yelp buds. Speaking of happy hours, I especially like this one because they offer excellent food deals and it goes until 8! I had the shrimp Po Boy which was loaded with juicy shrimp (highly recommend)!! Everyone in our party spoke highly of their dishes so I'm anxious to go back to explore the menu with my mouth.. Lol This was a fun evening because like I said, it was a planned Yelp HH and I was able to kick it with some super cool peeps! I believe this is what Yelp should be all about!!

I love this place, and dont come here often enough. Located upstairs from Pearl Dive, this dark little bar won my heart the first time we came here. At that time there was a bocce ball court in the back, I'm not sure if that's changed since then. Regardless we always grab seats at the main bar. Food options here are limited, read: The menu oyster menu from downstairs . But the craft beer menu is solid. I rarely have anything that I haven't seen before, but it has happened. I need to plan another visit soon.

I JUST LOVE THIS PLACE! Everything about this place- I'm ALL ABOUT! Let me detail: Here are the deets: Deet1: The decor is this sort of mish mash of old mid-century modern wonderful things. Big signs that are made out many lightbulbs. Like those signs on Broadway that people refer to when they say, " you're gonna see my name in lights!" Almost like carnival type signs. There's one that says GOLF which is just kinda fun ( and it has interchanging relay) Deet 2: The small bathrooms remind you of being in like an old turn of the century hotel. They're just interesting. There are so many small things that they have put into this place Deet 3: There is a bocce ball court in the back! This just screams fun! I actually had no idea how to play until we encountered a few tipsy men on the court who taught us. Thank you: Joe R, Avery, and.... ugh... what's his name. It was a long day... Evan? In D.C from Seattle for a conference. Deet 4: They have this old cigarette machine that they have converted to dispense artwork for local artists. I decided to get a token from the bar and have my luck at the "Game Piece Earrings" art thing. I got 2 earrings that were old pieces from a 50's board game (3 of spades to be exact). They were awesome and I wore them while playing bocce ball for good luck. Deet 5: The drinks are great... I can't remember what I paid for my vodka diet-coke but I can't remember being surprised. The bar tender was really kind and all of my guests and myself enjoyed our time there. Deet 6: There is a section with old mismatched comfy couches to chill at with old coffee tables in front of them. Like if I opened a bar... it would look VERY similar to Black Jack. FULL ZELDA HEARTS FOR BLACK JACK!

On Sundays this is the spot to be for the best burger on 14th st! Half off deal included. They also have a great jalapeno shrimp pizza I love. I definitely recommend this bar if you like to enjoy food and comfortable atmosphere. Also have a very cool pop culture inspired room in the back that is a lot of fun. You can see art including video games, super heroes to celebrities. The only thing bad is you might not get a seat!

My partner and I went to Black Jack for a birthday drinks celebration, and overall, I felt it was a cozy place to have either a group or just drinks for two. At the same time, there are so many new and different places popping up on 14th Street, I didn't really see what was different or special about this place. It was a bit difficult finding a place because there's no real signage. It's above Pearl Dive, but you'll miss it if you just walk on by. I guess that's maybe a charm. For a Sunday afternoon, it was not that crowded. All day Sunday is their happy hour, and it has okay specials. They have five dollar red white and sparkling wines - but when I asked what kind of red or what kind of sparkling, she had no idea. The waitress kind of was clueless in general, but it is what it is and the menu fits on one small piece of paper. They seem to want to specialize in pizzas, so I gave him a try. I ordered the "pie of the day", which was some pizza with mussels and cheese. You would not normally think to put mussels on a pizza, but it was a tasty combination. It would have been bad if the mussels would have been gritty or not fresh, but the pizza was tasty. I liked it but my partner did not, so I guess it's just a taste. Overall, I would say that Black Jack has a more intimate and dark setting, but I did see other groups of varying sizes. There are better drink choices on 14th Street than Black Jack, but the price point was fine.

I came to Black Jack recently to celebrate a friend's birthday for a Saturday evening, probably around 9pm. She picked the location and since I had never heard of the bar, I was excited to check it out! Unfortunately, this was during the Capitals Stanley Cup madness. So the place was packed with people watching the game on the giant TV behind the bar or, after the Caps win that night, flooding in to celebrate. So I can't speak to the crowds on a normal night, but it was a little too packed for my liking. Luckily we were there early enough to get a small table, and quickly snagged the table next to us as people left. So we were relatively isolated from the crowds, until we had to weave through the crowd to wait at the packed bar for drinks or to wait in long bathroom lines. Our table was near the door for the bar inside the bar, Tilt. So, as many other people have mentioned, a ton of people lined up for Tilt, making Black Jack even more crowded, and they often gave up and defaulted to Black Jack, making Black Jack even crazier. Since we were there earlier and had been next to the Tilt bouncer for so long, a member from our group was able to go back there pretty easily and check it out and said it was nothing special. So it was purely the novelty of a bar within a bar that caused this insane line. And since the line was right next to us, and since Tilt is technically its own venue and people can't bring their Black Jack drinks in, so many rude, drunk patrons discarded their drinks (full or empty) at our packed table. Aside from the madness, Black Jack had some pretty good food and drinks. We were there a little too late to want dinner, but we got a plate of fries to share. They were crispy, perfectly seasoned, shoestring fries, accompanied by two sauces that we could not quite place, but were both delicious. Additionally, the menu looked like it had a lot of other tasty options that I would love to try another time. As for the drinks, there was a pretty good selection of beers on tap. Plus, some very interesting sounding cocktails, including two slushy cocktails that they make in bulk and keep in a Slurpee machine. I decided to try the Crush Crush, which included orange, pineapple, lime, and rum. The first couple of sips, I couldn't tell if it was too sweet or too strong or maybe just too cold for me. But after I adjusted a bit, having had a beer before, so a completely different drink, the Crush Crush was quite tasty. I would have loved drinking that outside, on a rooftop bar or a patio. Based on the other reviews, I would like to come here for happy hour, when it seems like it's more mellow which, in my opinion, would better fit the decor and the menu. But I'm not sure I would come here again late night.

I was so ready to love this place. The location is prime and the decor is so original and exciting. I also love the concept of the hidden bar in the back. So fun! HOWEVER, and there is a however... when I came here the other day for Happy hour (which isn't a bad deal) I was more than a little disappointed with the service, particularly at the end. Our server was really nice and attentive but when we ordered our first round he proactively told us we just needed 1 card for the tab and he'd split it out for us at the end. Okay, cool we said, no worries. Fast forward multiple rounds and we are ready to close out. Our server then proceeds to tell us he won't split out our tab and we can just figure it out on Venmo ourselves. Literally, he said to sort it out with Venmo because there were too many of us to split. In the end it wasn't the end of the world we figured it out and to be honest this is likely how we would have done it. The thing that really irked me and the folks I was with was two-fold. First he told us he would split it out at the end for us. If that was untrue just tell us! Don't lie about it. If he hadn't lied we wouldn't have had a problem. And second, his clear brush off and dismissal with a blasé "figure it out yourselves on venmo" was just really rude. It was presumptuous and bad form. Be up front about check policy and don't offer up options, like splitting the check, if that's actually not allowed. We are flexible it doesn't matter to us but don't be fake about it.

Perhaps I'm in the minority here, but I've been to Black Jack around 8-10 times over the past couple years and believe that the bar has gotten worse throughout that time span. For those not familiar, Black Jack used to have two big sections: the main bar area in the front and a bocce court with additional seating in the back. This was the Black Jack that I loved and frequented every few weeks. Sometime in the past year, however, the back room was replaced with a speakeasy called "Tilt", which I believe was a huge mistake. The speakeasy itself is fine, but before I enjoyed the contrast between the upbeat, more chatty first room and the laid back bocce area. Now, the bar is significantly more crowded (at least from my experience), with people attempting to get into the speakeasy and resorting to Black Jack as a backup plan. The venue went from feeling very unique to just being one of the countless crowded bars in the 14th St/U St neighborhoods. Solid happy hour deals, good pizza and an above average beer selection save this place from a lower score. I also have had good interactions with the staff! However, I much preferred the Black Jack of old, and will probably not be back anytime soon.

True Life: I Take Bocce Ball Too Seriously While my disposition might say "cool, calm, confident and casual" my internal workings are busy calculating excellence and domination. So, don't invite me to bocce with you. However, for less competitively inclined folk, playing a lil' bocce and sipping on a cool cocktail or two in a space that actually has a little room to breathe, is a rare find in an area full of businesses that are always brimming with patrons. Which is why I've been recommending it to folks for year coming. There is a happy median experience that can satiate a range of tastes. They've never let me down and hopefully they'll never let you down either.

A local friend told me to meet her here for happy hour on a Thursday evening and this was my first visit. It's located in between Pearl Dive & Ghibellina. It's upstairs and u have to take a steep narrow stairway up. Doorman was friendly & funny. My friend was already seated at the bar, but because I brought 2 others with me, we switched to a high top table. The bar has a cool vibe and is dimly lit. Many people were enjoying the happy hour. We all had a couple of rounds of wine ($5 a glass). Wine was average, but servers were fast and never left a glass empty for long. This was a great spot to start off the evening. I would love to go back and try the food at Pearl Dive (Same owners) or play some bocce ball at the indoor court.

Staff is slow and the place has a weird smell. Stay away. Takes 30 minutes to get a drink.

This is one of my favorite spots to go to when I'm staying in town. I had a large group of folks and they were able to accommodate an entire birthday party showing up to drink and celebrate. The bartenders were attentive and quick, and the cocktails are wonderful. Whatever you're looking for, this place has it. (Just last night we watched the Caps win at Tilt, the side bar in the back) which has good beer, fast service, and reasonable prices. This will continue to be one of my DC staples!

Extremely disappointed in the service here. Our friends were not allowed in because they were "at capacity" despite fact they were letting al the women in no worries. We didn't even get to try the food as the bartender didn't want us to order food/ bar bites: strongly recommend against coming here unless it's early in the evening and the bar tender has not many people To serve: just disappointed.

Dark vibes with mediocre food. I went on a Sunday afternoon, it was pretty empty. Nothing stood out to be honest.

This place has an overwhelmingly bad smell. It was so unpleasant from the time we reached the top of the stairs to arrive at Black Jack. I had planned to order some food with my drink, but couldn't stand the smell here that we left to go to Pearl Dive to grab some food. I had a whiskey sour which was very average, but came in a plastic cup which was very odd. The bartender seemed upset to even have to mix a cocktail, and showed it all over his face. There were a couple of groups here day-drinking who looked they were having a great time... Maybe the key to staying here and having a good time is to just get really drunk.

I have been to Tilt/Blackjack many times, and it was enjoyable. It has now changed. As a woman, I do not go to the bathroom at bars alone. I always ask a friend to escort me as I am unsure whom I may encounter in line. This time, I chose a long time friend of 4+ years (who happened to be a gay man) because I was comfortable with him and trusted that he would take care of me if need be. No less than 45 seconds in to us entering the bathroom together did we start to hear a pounding on the door. We did not initially react because there was not security/a bouncer monitoring the bathrooms nor was there signage or guidance restricting the number and gender of guests in a bathroom facility. However, when i opened the door to exit, I was confronted by a female patron I had never seen as well as 'Francisco' who said he was an employee of the bar. 'Francisco' and this female patron began to berate me and my friend and accuse us of being inappropriate in the bathroom. I feel no need to defend our behavior as we were acting as any friends would, however, these two people were clearly uncomfortable by the fact that we were friends of different gender and sexual orientation. Upon exiting the bathroom, 'Francisco' told my friend and I that we had to leave the bar. When I requested a reason or a policy, he was unable to provide me with any explanation further than "you know what you did." Unfortunately for 'Francisco,' my intentions for bringing a platonic, long term, male friend to the restroom with me were for safety reasons. It was made clear after interacting with the Tilt/Black Jack staff that I needed protection not only against patrons, but also against staff. We were forcefully removed from the establishment with no other explanation besides, "you know what you did." Upon asking for a manager, we were only met with more security as if we were criminals and not just two friends trying to enjoy a night with one another. As we were forced out of the bar and begging for a clear explanation as to why, it became clear that the unidentified woman who was standing outside of the bathroom had made it seem as if me and my friend (of different sexual orientation) were being inappropriate in the restroom. Since they had so easily and without proof taken her word as fact, I attempted to explain my side of the story by sharing that this was my long term friend that I trusted to look out for me in situations that could be potentially dangerous for a woman. I am still eternally grateful that he was with me through this experience as the "security" at this establishment were clearly not interested in protecting the patrons and were only interested in upholding "policies" that were listed no where in the entire establishment. They (the 'security') proceeded to accuse me of engaging in inappropriate behavior with my FRIEND in the restroom, and as I was desperately trying to defend myself, I mentioned I had a long term boyfriend to which they replied, "do you think he'd be proud of you now?" These employees clearly felt superior to a woman and a gay man. They had no interest in understanding why a woman would want a man (friend or romantic) to escort her to the bathroom for safety reasons. They did not even provide us with a whole reason as to why they were throwing us out of the establishment, and proceeded to demean me with words such as, "I'm sure your boyfriend would love to catch you with another man." The complete disrespect and disregard for a woman's safety is astounding. If you have strict bathroom policies, they are to be posted on the walls and enforced by staff sitting at the bathroom. It is wholly unacceptable to throw two people out of your bar concerning "rules" that were established nowhere besides the bigoted brains of the people working that evening. I felt unsafe and disrespected by this staff. I have lived in DC for almost a decade and have experienced unacceptable behavior, but never to the point of writing a review and going in the next day (which I will be doing in this case). People should be allowed to take the precautions they need in order to feel safe. And if an establishment has policies, they must be posted and NOTICEABLE to their patrons. This was a shameful experience. If you only want to protect the safety and comfort of cis, white patrons, you should not be in business in 2022. Hire a proper HR and training team to guide you in the right direction before you endanger more lives.

I would give BlackJack 0 stars if I could. Im never going again after last night. I've only gone there to hang with my friends who live in the neighborhood and end up there because there are no other top 40 music bars on that part of 14 Street. Every time I've gone has been a different, bad experience. There are only two toilets for a bar that jam packs 150+ people in it, so the queue is uncomfortably long. It's also hard to move around. The bartenders are overwhelmed with only two on staff at most and there always seems to be broken glass on the floor. Staff is also consistently rude to patrons. EVERYONE claims to be a manager but no one will direct someone to clean up glass or unclog a toilet or clean off a table or correct a messed up drunk order. It's clear they hire the bottom rung of employees available in the service industry. Not worth going here. Walk north a few blocks and go to Cafe Saint Ex or Policy or Hawthorne instead.

We have been twice now for a sit down dinner as well as a bite and drink at the bar. Big fan of the rooftop, it's definitely where the younger crowd is at. A little chilly up there in the winter but the heaters they have do help! Mac and cheese bites are bangin! Pretty good beer selection as well :)

I met some of my fellow yelp compatriots at this DC establishment and the service, food and environment was all very nice. Not excellent but overall good. The beverages that were served had that certain kick to it, that ever confident male looks forward to. That punch to the throat! As others have stated when trying to find the bar make sure you have the address noted correctly or you will pass it or go in to the wrong watering hole. I would definitely see myself returning on a warmer night to satisfy my alcoholic urges. Black Jack I say HIT ME again!!

Actually the worst experience at a bar I have ever had in DC. I was in the back of this bar, tilt. The bar tenders were actually pretty great and efficient. However; Let me relate my story at this hellhole; I was at the bar bar for a about 1.5 hours (Bought food and two drinks) and I was enjoying the Friday evening with friends after a week of work, I took a stroll around the rest of the bar (split into two levels and three rooms) to stretch my legs and to use the lav. Afterwards I was trying to walk back to my friends when one bouncer arbitrarily decided I was no longer allowed in the room I had just spent an hour in. The 6'3" 320 lb bouncer is apparently stupider than he looks because he (A) didnt notice the fact I had just walked right past him leaving that room/portion of bar three minutes earlier (B) decided that since he had done literally nothing but sit on a stool all night it was time to exercise his tiny iota of power and prevent a paying patron from reentering the room they had just spent two hours in. No explanation what-so-ever for why (I heard him tell another bouncer later that "He was an asshole" - I wonder if the bartenders 20 feet away thought the same thing, or anyone else other than one infantile man on a power trip?). In any event the night was below freezing and rainy and I had left my coat and umbrella in the room i was then being senselessly prevented from entering. For one second the brute of a bouncer realized how stupid he was being when it dawned on him that all my things were already in the room he decided I could not enter, but his idiotic pride took over and he tried to even prevent me from getting my things and leaving (by this time i was DYING to LEAVE this place). I got my affects and left, I never got an explanation why I was kicked out after not being allowed in the bar I had just spend two hours with my friends spending money in. The bouncer also pushed me for no reason, and was very physical the whole time. I have no problem leaving your bar and no problem ever coming back, keep your hands off me.

I organized an event for some fellow Yelpers to attend a happy hour here where about 17 showed up in total throughout the night. We had an amazing time, and really enjoyed the happy hour offers. I ordered 2 rose wines for $5 a piece, their 12 Barron Island oysters for $15, and the Swine pizza for half off the regular price. Everyone tried everyone's food. Overall everyone enjoyed it. The space is beautiful. I love the dim lighting, and the sexy ambiance of all the black and red. The offer bocce ball in one of the main areas, and then the other main part of the bar with multiple high tops and lounge seating for larger parties like where my group sat. They do split checks for large groups! This is a plus and made the transition very easy for dividing who got what. Our server... well, this is why I am knocking a star. I felt like she had a stick up her ass. A couple of people agreed with me. Maybe I am taking it too far, but I wasn't impressed with her attitude and didn't appreciate the 'tude provided. I WANT TO CALL her out, but I am trying to have more respect.... On the other hand -- Blake is awesome and a sweet heart. I met him on the way into the place. He works at the Pearl part of the bar downstairs. He even came up to check in to see if we were enjoying ourselves. Thanks Blake! Black Jack, I'll see you soon.

When coming here.... Look for signs for pearl dive (Another restaurant) and enter the door on the left of the front of the restaurant. This door opens up to a hall with steps leading you upstairs above pearl dive to the bar Black Jack. I say this because there is very little in the sign department to lead you to believe you're at the right place. When you get up there it opens up into a surprisingly large restaurant with music playing with high ceilings. There are a number of tables perfect for 3-4 people and there are also a few spots in the restaurant that are perfect for a group of ~12. If you're looking for a happy hour spot for a small gathering I'd 100% recommend this place. They have some really great happy hour deals (Call or look on website to see it broken up by day). We went on a thur and it was half off pizzas and select amount of beers were half off. There were other things on special too but I can't recall what they were. I had some flying dog drafts that were half price and ordered a meatball pizza that was half price too. These deals were hard to beat! I suspect our little group was a bit of a hassle for the server that ended up getting stuck with us but she did an excellent job. She managed to open tabs and keep track of who belonged to what tab the entire night. She also showed up at the perfect time and never forgot a drink when you asked her for one along with everyone else asking. The pizza is very thin and they offered a number of unique varieties; however, I don't know if I'd classify it as a "pizza" in the traditional sense. They were more like what you'd expect when you order a flat bread except in a round shape. None-the-less if I compare them to flatbreads I've had at other places they were very very tasty. Thin crunchy crust with great blends of spices sauces and cheeses. I tried about four different pizzas they were all good tasting. The amount of toppings were a bit skimp but for half price I have no complaints about that! If I was paying full price I would probably feel slightly different about it. I will definitely be showcasing Black Jack to friends that visit me from out of town a spot to grab a few drinks and a "pizza". I'll also have this place on the top of my list when I think about needing a place to host a happy hour with a dozen or so people.

Super fun time! Went here with some coworkers for a happy hour when visiting out of town. They have food - anywhere from oysters to pizza. They pour strong drinks (shout out to our server Devlin!) and the overall atmosphere is altogether great! I'd definitely come back again when in town next.

I was manhandled and aggressively yelled at by a bouncer here- it was very upsetting. My friends and I had gone into Tilt, the bar in the separate room at the back, gotten a couple of tables, put our jackets down, and ordered drinks. We then went back out to the main BlackJack bar area to tell some other friends where we were, carrying our drinks from Tilt. No one said anything to us when we entered or exited the Tilt room about not being able to take drinks back and forth. However when we tried to go back to our tables in the backroom, a bouncer stopped us. We explained that we had just (literally minutes ago) ordered our drinks in that room, that our stuff was in there, and that he had just seen us walk out. He said he needed to talk to the bartender and tried to take my drink from me. I did not allow him to do this- as a woman I never allow my drinks out of my sight. He said again he needed to talk to the bartender, I said, ok let's go talk to him and tried to walk with the bouncer over to the bar to straighten everything out. I took one step and this man, who had about 1.5 feet and 200 lbs on me, grabbed me across my waist and pushed me back. I calmly said "please don't touch me" and he responded to my reasonable request (to not be physically assaulted) by telling me I wasn't allowed to talk to him that way, yelling at us, and calling me a bitch. Even after I profusely apologized to him for the misunderstanding (which happened because the rules were in no way communicated to us) just to try to diffuse the situation, he kept yelling at me and told my friends they could go in but I could not. Needless to say I will not be returning to a Black Restaurant Group establishment until they respond to my email about this incident and make it right. To the management: 1. If you want to have weird rules about carrying drinks between two connecting rooms of the same bar, communicate these to your customers. 2. People (especially women) should not be asked to have their drinks taken out of their sight- this is how people get roofied. 3. YOUR BOUNCERS SHOULD NEVER TOUCH WOMEN. Your bouncers should never call women bitches and yell at them. End of story.

It was such an amazing place! My boyfriend and I sat at the bar and we had a wonderful time! Terrance was a fantastic manager and created great conversation. Katie, Devlyn, and Ian were so wonderful to us and made our experience the best we have had being in DC. All around, so amazing and I recommend to anyone! Phenomenal staff, wonderful deals, and fantastic environment!
