Google
Great bar/pub to release the steam after a busy day, just letting you taking it easy. Great playlist by the bartender and a charging brick for your dying mobile as a bonus ;) I specifically enjoyed the playlist - just the place you want to be if your nerves require a little bit of soothing. Just step in and you will be magiced ;)

L. S.

Google
4 cocktails for 40USD (incl. tips) was a nice experience. Unfortunately not so many "magic" drinks and exotic liquors, so the black magic is limited. More Voodoo theme for the cocktails I'd expected. But bartender was very entertaining.

Google
Not very friendly to tourists. I was staying across the street at hotel, went out for a walk on my last night in Frisco, stepped inside for a beer and barkeep wouldn't serve me just because I didn't have my ID. I was 58 years old at the time all I wanted was 1 freakin beer! Place is a neighborhood dive, dirty, smelly. Wouldn't recommend to anyone from out of town!

Ben Menkal

Google
One of the most fun bars I've ever been to! The owners are from New Orleans and have been in San Francisco for over 16 years. Wide range of options ranging from craft beer, to excellent handcrafted spirits. Great place to watch sports or hang out with friends. I had so many fun conversations that made the experience very memorable. 10/5 stars!

Google
Was visiting SF to celebrate my birthday and our hotel was a couple doors down so we stopped in to check it out. The bartender Steve was really awesome and welcoming!! I really enjoyed being there and I'm not usually someone who frequents bars. Highly recommend!!

Venus Hurtado

Google
I highly enjoyed my time here! Great staff and customers! The drinks are quite reasonable and the bartender made drinks perfectly, I highly recommend to go here ❤️ I had a classic Cranberry vodka and it was wonderfully made and my guy enjoyed the beers

Cassidy Myers

Google
Stop in and hope James is working. Awesome vibe, awesome drinks. I love this bar.

Kaitlyn

Google
My girlfriends and I stopped in here to start off our Saturday night as we were at a hotel right across the road. We loved the vibe of the place and the bartender was great! Full of great chat and conversation while also giving us great recommendations for the area as well. What a great little place!

Yelp
Great pub for after volo games Close to Galileo Gym Super comfortable spot to get a beer with rec league team

Yelp
I walked by on Lombard pondering Comfort Inn on Van Ness. I had gone to Silver Cloud karaoke bar and played the games (skeeball). This bar is smaller. There is a "New Orleans" poster..I decided to get a Red Bull for $5 and sit in the bar for a little bit. I could look out the window and see Comfort Inn on Van Ness...sit for a bit and try a different bar in SF. Add it to my collection.
google avatar

Yelp
Ok little corner bar that's been around for quite a while. New Orleans transplants come here from far and wide to watch Saints games. Bartender Cassandra is nice.
google avatar

Nicole G.

Yelp
Great atmosphere and great service. Liz is so nice and genuine. I appreciate an honest experience and that's exactly what you get here. It is a small but an awesome space. I will definitely come back when I can. I had great conversations with Liz and another patron. I feel like you can't find this type of establishment anymore. I'm just super bummed I moved to Southern CA and can't come back more often. Go here for a personal and dare I say intimate experience.

Eric L.

Yelp
Steve is the greatest bartender in San Francisco PERIOD. Knows his Tito's well and can make a bomb Gin and Tonic.
google avatar

Andrea N.

Yelp
By far the most underrated bar in San Francisco. Do you love the Saints? Do you love a strong drink? Do you love a neighborhood bar where a sexy man (by the name is Steve) can pour you a drink????? You're in luck. There is no place like Black Magic. I love the bartenders, the music and drinks. You will ALWAYS find good vibes and love in here. Come in and talk to Steve. He is the amazing man who works most of the time and who is filled with positive energy. I this place so much. Please come here and support Steve, Cassandra and John.

Yelp
Okay, let's be honest. If you are looking for a pretentious bar with beautiful people, this is not it. But the regulars are very welcoming and the bartender was great. If you are just looking for an authentic dive then this be your place. My head agrees that I had a good time last night
google avatar

Steve F.

Yelp
Great place to get away from Polk and Chestnut joints. But the real appeal are the New Orleans people, who know how to party. The best place to watch a Saints game!

Perla R.

Yelp
The best place in San Francisco to hangout and have a drink. If I'm ever back I'll definitely be back. The local people there were so welcoming and friendly. Loved the environment. If you're in San Francisco definitely check it out.

Yelp
We stopped in here during my husband's holiday party crawl. Right away we all made ourselves cozy. Black Magic Voodoo Lounge is an intimate New Orleans themed bar and it was perfect for our boisterous group. There seemed to be a number of regulars in the bar when we arrived - and everyone there seemed familiar with the staff. Our bartender - a New Orleans native made sure that everyone was taken care of when it came to drinks and lively conversation. Being that it was around the holidays - it was lovely to have a spot - where we could all hear each other speak and where the staff went out of their way to make the evening memorable. If you're looking for a small low-key bar in the area with friendly staff - this is your spot Trust.

Rebecca F.

Yelp
Visiting from New Orleans and this was a great place to watch the saints game ! It gets packed in there, so don't expect to sit unless you get there early.

Yelp
Really cozy bar, bartender was very nice we stayed just a couple hours i would recommend it. They open at 4 pm so dint be alarmed if you drive by and it's closed lol
google avatar

Diana G.

Yelp
Open as of 7/01/21 and the contact number is new. First time here and I'm from LA the staff is so welcoming and friendly and I'm so sad I didn't come here sooner! The drinks are great and it's super convenient where it's located, definitely a must try
google avatar

Alex C.

Yelp
Wonderfully, Black Magic Voodoo Lounge is NOT CLOSED. I am having a drink here right bow, in one of San Francisco's most character-filled tiny dive bars. And YOU SHOULD TOO. Get in here. Right now.

Yelp
very nasty rude bar tender i asked for one glass of water. and was just talking to someone and get ignored very rude person next to me would not ever say anything. i asked a question and the bar tender said they don't take those so i was just about to finish my water and was told i could not hung out here if i'm not going to buy anything. but i was about to go he wouldn't even give me time to finish my water just about telling me to go leave walk's around where he was at to walk behind me to tell me to leave this ass-hole was 6"7 and i said your not opening the door i swung it close to his face and said out side i'm intermediated by you. your an ass-hole that discrimination. before he walk behind me i said to him you don't need to tell me to leave let me leave when i'm done with my water. but this jerk insisted on being very rude and having no respect for me as a lady. no bar tender has the right and any one else to treat anyone like trash i've since i move here i've been treated like trash and been discriminated from many place for no reason. where i live at i completely uncomfortable. no harassment complete invasion of privacy and i'm being targeted by half the people living in this city with there dame truman show stalking i can't stand it. and been job discriminated lift & right. don't wast your time in this price gouging bar and any bar that has rude bar tender and are quick to jude you. and the price is to high.

Yelp
Went here while bar hopping and this was my favorite stop. Small but homie and music was def my feels. Love love it

Glenn D.

Yelp
Tried this dive bar for the first time this past Friday. Neat little unassuming place. Thought there would be something more thematic in its decor or drinks. Was a little quiet which was honestly kind of nice. Cassandra is a great and personable bartender!

Eleanor H.

Yelp
Open and alive. Come on in and celebrate there opening with a cocktail or 2. New number 415 359-9831

Thomas B.

Yelp
One of the workers here stole my backpack. He eventually gave it back, but I would expect that people put it in the lost and found rather than steal it.
google avatar

Bethany A.

Yelp
Great little local spot with cheap drinks poured with a heavy hand the atmosphere was cool and music rocked.
google avatar

Cindy B.

Yelp
Love this dive bar! Friendly bartender and patrons, funky voodoo vibe, strong and reasonably priced drinks, and cool music!

Yelp
I won't hold the fact that this spot is a Saints Bar against it. But, since I have the opportunity, I would like to point out that the Saints are a bunch of cheating little ******* for deliberately targeting Brett Favre with cheap shots during the NFC Championship game. Yep, they got busted, but they got to party with Mr. Lombardi. Me, I got more heartbreak. I've never seen a Saints game here, but I plan to come and talk all sorts of trash about my absolute least favorite team in the NFL. The Saints were ridiculous cheaters in 2009/2010 - They should have lost their rings. That's feels better. Now, that one unfortunate fact aside, it's a cool bar. I've got nothing against New Orleans itself. There is a New Orleans theme to the decor here, but other than that it's hard to see much evidence in terms of the drinks, music, etc. They do have one beer from Abita. I'm primarily a beer drinker, and I'm not blown away with the tap list - they could use at least one higher ABV IPA beyond regular Lagunitas. It's kind of a small bar and it's all in the one area - there's no quiet corner to hide. The decor is pretty cool and they have a nice juke-box. I've been impressed with the bartenders across the board - not because of any mixology prowess, they just seem like a cool group of people that help build the community of regulars that makes a bar more than just a place to grab a beer and watch sports. That is what brings it up from a 3 to a 4. The location itself is also an asset. You're in the confluence of the Cow Hollow, Marina, Russian Hill and Fisherman's Wharf. Corner of Van Ness and Lombard. As you are making your way from one district to the next, it's sort of at the crossroads. It's opens reasonably earlier and stays open all the way until bar close. There are a lot of motels/hotels very close, so you'll find this a reasonably friendly spot if you're visiting from elsewhere. And, if you happen to be coming back, it's a good place for a "final final" before calling it a night. (Pro Tip: Viking's Giant Subs is next door and they are open until 8:30pm - you're fine to bring in food if you'd like to grab a sandwich as you are enjoying your afternoon or early evening drink.)

Yelp
The setting, the feel, the ambience is great! Yesterday was their 4th day back open after over a year of being closed, due to coivd. A great dive bar with New Orleans theme, and equally awesome bartenders! Go show your support! I promise they're not closed!

Yelp
Dank but inviting, dark but fun. Incredible place. If you like nice bathrooms with all the sink knobs intact and door locks(men's room), don't come here. No one is snooty, everyone is cool. It seems to be intentional and I love it. Great place if u are happy to talk to strangers. Alone or in a group, it's all good. The staff is flamboyant and engaging. Also, very specifically saints focused. So much so that you can drink Abita while checking out their signed memorabilia.
google avatar

Kyra P.

Yelp
If you love dive bars this is the one for you, I prefer to go to dive bars more then regular bars because I feel like they are less judgey and if you find the right one you will get the best service, we were visiting San Fran and decided to walk here after dinner and we met this great bartender, she was the BEST super personable and had great stories to tell, and let me tell you, ask for her shot called the bag of d**ks I promise you won't be disappointed
google avatar

Paul H.

Yelp
Very rude with owner kicking everyone out of the bar at 5:30pm today because he was tired. He whistled and said "Everyone get the fuck out of here". Like we are dogs. No respect to culture or people.
google avatar

Lyndon G.

Yelp
Great bar to go to for the saints games! Cool people in a fun place. The bartenders are great. Don't come hungry because they don't serve food, but they were fine with us bringing something in. However they were giving out gumbo during the last saints game...

Zeydy E.

Yelp
They are back and open! Hours are from 3pm-2am, weekends they open at 2pm-2am! Come thru and support them and show love!
google avatar

Yelp
It's tough to find real dives in The Marina/Russian Hill area but this one sure qualifies. Great service - was recently locked out of my house and got a pity shot of Jameson on the house. Decent amount of TVs, (relatively) inexpensive, and you can bring food in. Recently started taking credit cards.
google avatar

Randi B.

Yelp
We weren't here long, just stopped in for a drink before dinner. Short visit = short review: 1 craft beer 2 very strong cocktails $15 Sweet bartender. Friendly patrons. I would stop in here again for sure.
google avatar

Brett N.

Yelp
Why 4 stars? Because I assume those reading this are looking to get knocked on their ass. --- --- --- I shouldn't rush to judgment, but I AM judging you...person who is currently reading this...and assuming you would really like a stiff drink right now. Well, let me tell you. BMVL is your place. I hope they go by their acronym and I didn't just confuse everyone. It's probably pretty easy to confuse you tho, considering how drunk you probably are. I asked for a dark and stormy, I got a glass of dark rum. It tasted pretty strong, but not extremely overwhelming. Only semi-overwhelming. I was pretty thoroughly buzzed up afterward. I feel like I did not re-gain sobriety for several hours. I guess that's why I usually just stick to beer. I went through all kinds of phases, after this cocktail: -The ugh, this is nasty phase -The welp, I'm feeling good phase -The am I floating phase? -The perma-smiling phase -The is this light headed feeling ever going to go away phase? -The I would like to go to sleep right here, right now phase And finally... -The wow....I just realized I no longer feel like I am walking around in a 3x the legal dosage of Nyquil state - thank God that's over, I'm never drinking again phase Obviously, it's hard to review a place when you were there for 15 minutes to have one drink and move on, but I had no complaints. I could have done without wanting to be asleep while eating my delicious sushi from nearby Zushi Puzzle afterward...but maybe I should just man-up and be less of a lightweight.
google avatar

Veronica M.

Yelp
It said dive bar and that is what you get. Cool little place with a slight New Orleans theme. Drinks were averaged price but service was good! Not a huge amount in beer selection but we chose it more so because of the atmosphere which we enjoyed!
google avatar

Anthony M.

Yelp
Don't bother with this place, if it a lady called Lola. She pgot me a double bourbon with ice when I wanted it straight no offer of an apology or another drink and and when I refused to drink it she ignored me. And then asked Alex, the barman who was due to finish at 8 pm but because Lola never turned up till 8 45 never finished until closer until 9 pm, that one of the regular seemed pissed off at her. I know why ! A mediocre bar...4 out of 10.

Yelp
I must preface that this is in my neighborhood, and that I frequent there more than I should. However, I don't break the bank going here..... -Very Reasonable Drink Prices -Friendly Bartenders -Neighborhood Feel, but welcoming to all -Yes, you can smoke -Friendly Locals - friends in and out of the bar, talks with everyone, great direction givers -Open Mic on every other Sunday -Dudes and Chicks with Dogs (only when its not busy though, there has to be room for the drinkers) -A few "crusty" old usuals, but they only look crusty (however very friendly) -Great Jukebox and some of the bartenders bring their iPods and hook them up to the sound system -Great Owners - Joe fed the bar corned beef and cabbage for St. Patrick's Day As they say, you always come home....to the Black Magic. Every one of my friends (smokers and non-smokers) have loved the place. P.S. The smoking lamp has been turned off. A sad, sad day........
google avatar

Louis H.

Yelp
Quick walk from Fisherman's Warf hostel. Got here pretty late and had no problem getting a stiff drink. Cool vibe and dig the New Orleans feel. Good selection of popular beers and liquors. Watched a guy skin a moose on the corner.
google avatar

Mike D.

Yelp
Was here for SF walker stalker and after spending time at the pier and dinner figured we stop in for drinks before walking to our hotel. I admit with the name ones might question it but you'd be missing out on a bar that feels like a chill neighborhood bar where everyone just gets along. We were first timers and we never felt out of place. The bartender was cool and nice and even suggested two drinks for my GF, she liked the milky way better than the other drink, let's just say it's called a bag of... :) TVs were on two games, a jukebox and just a fun chill vibe. If we stay close again we'll stop and you should too.
google avatar

Louis B.

Yelp
Amazing place! Try the white beer it is cool! Awesome and helpful staff. Good bartenders full of attitude but if you are nice they are too.
google avatar

Gretchen F.

Yelp
Love dive bars, this is a good one Good drinks But... I don't go to a New Orleans-style bar to listen to country music.
google avatar

Alex W.

Yelp
Not a bad dive bar, but not a lot else going on. If you're expecting a chill place to watch a game with not much else, check it out. But I'd prefer a few more drinks on the menu.
google avatar

Chris M.

Yelp
I see why this place is highly rated!!! It's really nothing special but when you have decent drinks plus excellent customer service then you have a winner!!! I guess they like the saints!! I almost took a star offf for that since I grew up with the 49ers... But whatever!
google avatar

Pata D.

Yelp
Great neighborhood bar, all the bartenders are very personable and nice. If you get a chance go watch football there, but be aware is't a New Orleans bar, the energy is great when Steve is there and lucky if Emily is there as well. I would definitely recommend it for a boost of Sunday-Funday. Thanks guys!
google avatar

glenn s.

Yelp
well, this review is a little out dated, but, I was in San Francisco about ten years ago and stayed at a hotel across the street. I asked the desk clerk about the bar and he said it was very casual and I would enjoy it. The name threw me off. I have to say it was very enjoyable. Laid back and comfortable. Regulars in the place playing guitar and just having fun. Why am I reviewing this ten years later, well I was watching tv and it reminded me of the place. When I go back I will make it a point to go to this bar.
google avatar

Nino A.

Yelp
This place was really pretty cool. Just the name, "Black Magic Voodoo Lounge" makes the adrenaline rise upon walking in to this locals' watering hole. They had a great selection of craft beers on tap, my fave tequila, and the patrons all seemed to be around mid to late 30's yuppies so I was comfortable to proceed... the bartender was personable and knew how to chill a shot of tequila perfectly... but then when I brought our drinks to the table everything went south and quick... First, I spilled my perfectly ambered IPA on the table and it spilled all over my partner in crime and of course, she had to be dramatic because we had the pub table in the front street window and she was wearing her "new" sweater (fyi friend, you have like what looks like to me, 10 of the same sweater!)... so I go back to the bar and ask the bartender for a new IPA (1st and most importantly) and a clean towel to take care of my mese and as he hands me the towel he proceeds to knock over a drink onto a girl right next to me... he was lucky, she just laughed so apparently wasn't wearing her new sweater! So I get back to the table to begin damage control AND THEN THE DUDE ACROSS FROM US KNOCKS HIS BEER OVER TO SPILL ACROSS THE BAR AREA! Thankfully we had a table adjacent so were unaffected, but THREE spilled drinks ONTO people within a matter of minutes got this ex-altar boys' spidey senses buzzing, so we picked up the bill and headed out. Great time while it lasted and I will definitely drop by again when in the Russian Hill District for a chilled shot of my fave tequila and a craft back... but not stay long enough for the voodoo black magic to rear its head again! Beware and have fun!
google avatar

Eric L.

Yelp
I absolutely love this place. The bartender Alley was great! She made us feel very welcome, so much that we spent another three nights there. Plus if you are a Saints fan this bar is the place to be Sunday's. Its absolutely crazy during a saints game.
google avatar

Nicole S.

Yelp
Defiantly has a dive bar vibe I honestly wish they would up play the "voodoo" a little more with drink specials or more Decor that didn't look just dirty old and upkept. We received are drinks very quickly and we're pleased that they were all correctly made! (I hate a poorly made drink) The price point for the drinks were somewhat pricy but what in sanfranscio isn't! All in all not a bad place but no somewhere I would go out of my way for
google avatar

Jessica R.

Yelp
The perfect bar in SF for the true NOLA feel and catching the Saints game. All the authentic Saints fans come out for game day and never a dull moment. I love how in between commercials they play Jazz music, keeping the atmosphere super lively. Also all the regulars bring that good authentic NOLA cookin to share for all. WHERE Y'AT?
google avatar

Janice L.

Yelp
Nice spot and friendly staff. The place is really dark inside and can be a bit loud to talk to one another. It's completely New Orleans themed which is awesome. And they're open pretty late! Definitely a good spot to hit up.
google avatar

Paul U.

Yelp
Came here on a Saturday night and it wasn't busy at all. We came during a Cal football game and seemed like everyone there was a Cal fan. It was pretty quiet even during the game and the bartender was even telling us it was okay to clap and yell when something good happened in the game. I've never been to New Orleans before but it seems like that's the team they were getting at here. They do take credit card here now which is obviously a good thing. Overall, this is a chill dive bar if you're looking for a quiet New Orleans feeling place.
google avatar

Jenna F.

Yelp
Four star dive bar. Steve was entertaining and made a stiff drink. Seems like it would be a great place to watch a Saints' game. I thought the Voodoo dolls were creepy, and he said the bathroom has something to be desired, but good people and good drinks made for a good experience.
