LA Times Calls West Hollywood’s Blackship a “Fascinating Scattershot of Highs and Lows” | Eater LA

"A playful Japanese–Italian newcomer from chef Keiichi Kurobe (formerly of Hinoki + the Bird) that feels like a buoyant, music-filled spot with a crowd that comes to bob along and sample inventive cross-cultural dishes. Some experiments land beautifully — most notably the Japanese Little Neck tonjiru, a miso-forward broth thick with clams, Tuscan kale, and crumbles of coarsely ground fatty pork sausage — while other hybrids, like the carbonara ramen, read as more amusing than truly satisfying. The restaurant’s charm is uneven: service can be spotty (an amused diner’s shouted “your server sucks” was noted), and the risks don’t always pay off, leaving the place feeling like a fascinating scattershot of highs and lows rather than the coherent excellence of a top ramen bar or Italian kitchen." - Farley Elliott

Have been using them for a few months now and I have absolutely no complaints. It's not the cheapest service, but their quickness in answering questions or simply helping you out when filling customs declaration is outstanding and justifies their prices. I currently only use proxies if I really need to, otherwise it's all going to Blackship.

Pricey but the best in forwarding services from Japan. If you plan on doing a lot of purchases through them, 100% buy their premium service: the small discounts add up nicely.

Amazing forwarding and delivery service from Japan to Australia. Signing up was very fast, their online website is very clear and easy to use and follow with clear instructions given. They notified me as soon as they had received the items I ordered and took pictures quickly of the contents (at my own additional request for a fee). I got several options when it came to shipping with cost and estimated delivery times. Shipping was very fast to Australia (even via EMS with tracking). Everything was well packed with extra padding and properly sealed. Overall fantastic company to deal with and great overall experience using their service. Would highly recommend.

A Disappointing and Concerning Experience Blackship presents itself as a reliable and efficient parcel forwarding service, but my recent experience fell far short of these promises. Here are the main points, reflecting both limited satisfaction and legitimate concerns: Pros Responsive Customer Service: Blackship's agents respond quickly to inquiries. However, this does not make up for the issues encountered. Cons 1.Inaccurate Weight Issues and Financial Impact: A recent error in the weight of a package (initially estimated at 1186 g, later reduced to 442 g after my intervention) could have cost me a significant amount of money if I hadn’t reacted. This kind of mistake severely impacts my trust in their service, as I can’t tell if it was an honest error or a deliberate attempt to inflate fees for profit. 2. Lack of Adaptability and Unsatisfactory Responses: Joanna's responses, though barely polite, clearly show a lack of willingness to accommodate specific customer requests. For example, despite my explicit instructions to reduce weight by removing unnecessary materials, these requests were dismissed under the pretext of adhering to their internal standards. This rigidity reflects insensitivity to the actual needs of customers. 3. Inaccuracy and Trust Issues: The fact that a similar item was shipped by another service at a much lower weight (170 g vs. 442 g with Blackship) reinforces the perception of an unreliable service. This discrepancy borders on being unprofessional when such differences are observed, especially since the additional costs would have been entirely my responsibility. 4. Lack of Proactive Estimations: Blackship's inability to compare the costs of consolidation versus separate shipments is another source of frustration. It unnecessarily complicates decision-making and forces the customer to rely on self calculations, which falls short of the standards a modern company should uphold. 5. Problematic Packaging Practices: A recurring issue is that Blackship always repackages items in their own materials, even when unnecessary. Half the time, this increases the weight of the shipment, leading to additional fees for the customer and a larger profit margin for Blackship. This practice seems to contradict their stated goal of optimizing costs for their users. Conclusion As a loyal customer (over 30 packages since 2020) I expect Blackship to deliver a service more aligned with their promises of efficiency and simplicity. Recent errors, rigidity in handling requests, and the perception of a lack of transparency seriously undermine their reliability. If these issues are not addressed promptly, it will be difficult to continue trusting them. I give this disappointing and concerning experience a 2/5 rating.

Scam? I was charged 100 CAD for shipping, but after checking the Japan Post receipt, the shipping cost was only 8,800 yen. I was overcharged. Also, I really don’t recommend it. If you buy the same item on Amazon, the shipping cost is almost half.

Honestly one of the best freight companies I’ve dealt with. Responsive and helpful. Prices from Japan relative to service and effort they put into packaging are very reasonable.
