The Best Places to Eat Brunch in New Orleans Right Now

"Weekend R&B brunch at Blake’s Place, the new-school NOLA comfort food restaurant from chef Blake Cressey, offers dishes like fluffy, sugar-dusted waffles with bacon and eggs; ethereal omelets; and savory catfish and grits. Mimosas are a must and reservations are advised, as the restaurant fills up on the weekend." - Eater Staff

The 16 Hottest New Restaurants in New Orleans, May 2024

"New-school New Orleans cuisine has revived a homey cottage in the Riverbend that was formerly home to Mexican restaurant La Mansion. Courtesy of Blake Cressey, the chef behind Tasty Treat food truck and restaurant, Blake’s Place offers a casual but full-service setting for New Orleans staples and Creole Italian specialties. It’s chic, pretty, and welcoming, and the menu is crowd-pleasingly familiar, full of comfort food and shareable items." - Clair Lorell, Justine Jones, Eater Staff

At Blake’s Place, Chef Blake Cressey Sets the Bar for New-School New Orleans Food | Eater New Orleans

"Located at 724 Dublin Street in New Orleans's Riverbend neighborhood, I found Blake’s Place to be Chef Blake Cressey’s first true semi-fine-dining establishment housed in a lovingly restored New Orleans-style shotgun home that still preserves a cozy, unforgettable New Orleans house vibe. Cressey blends Creole comfort food with an Italian influence to create dishes like chicken Marsala and the Dumaine Treat — a linguine Alfredo topped with Louisiana catfish, Gulf shrimp, and “Blake’s Riverwalk sauce,” which incorporates crawfish — while also offering classics she’s known for: gumbo, New Orleans-style barbecue shrimp, crawfish cheese sauce-topped fries, and Blake’s wings. The restaurant, which grew out of her years building a social-media-driven following, is open for lunch and dinner Wednesday through Sunday and for brunch Saturday and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and has been well received as a crowd-pleasing, new-school take on New Orleans comfort food." - Clair Lorell

We visited Blake’s Place after seeing it featured on Kitchen Nightmares. The food looked incredible on TV, and I wanted to give it a fair shot, knowing reality shows can sometimes be a little over the top. The highlights: The moment we walked in, we felt genuinely welcome. The space is small, cozy, and full of character. The food was fantastic — I ordered the fried chicken, and it was perfectly cooked with a flavorful batter. The spicy syrup was a standout and had a great kick to it! We shared an order of Riverbend fries, and they were just as delicious. The cocktails were excellent, and our server was friendly, talkative, and very helpful. Where there’s room for improvement: It was a busy Saturday night, and with only one server, service was understandably slow at times — getting drinks, refills, and even utensils took longer than expected. Food also came out slowly, and one dish needed to be remade. The hanger steak was well-seasoned but unfortunately tough. Overall, the welcoming atmosphere and delicious food definitely made it a memorable experience. I’d recommend it, especially for the fried chicken and cocktails, but just be prepared for a slower pace during busy nights.

Waiter was new but he was very nice and kept checking on us ; he was also the bartender as well. We had a group of 6 and 4 ppl ordered margarita flights so they did take quite a while to come out maybe about 30-45mins, the drinks came about about 5 minutes before the food. We went for brunch, and everyone enjoyed their food. The one thing I didn’t like about a dish was the vegetable omelette , it’s no description and I asked what was in it first and he said the usual vegetable items like mushrooms, bell peppers, etc. so I decided to get it, I was disappointed when it was lettuce in my omelette, it was like cold mixed lettuce wrapped in an egg- I thought it would be like sautéed spinach, mushrooms, bell peppers, onions or something nice and hot but it wasn’t so I was not a fan of that. Blake was around and was nice and friendly. All of the food(besides the omelette) was seasoned and the grits was so good and creamy. I would def come back

Second time coming here and unfortunately it was after I praised and bragged how good they were and got some of my family to try them. We had a pretty large reservation (12 people) and was told they couldn’t accommodate all of us sitting together even though there was more than enough room in the booth area for us all to be able to sit with one another. COOL! We were the last to arrive and were given paper menus that quickly got soaked due to the table being extremely wobbly. At one point I had to tell my cousin to not place anything on the table to not have it shake like it was having a small tantrum. The vibe was nice again, really solid music playing so that wasn’t bad. The waiter we initially had took our drink orders and then completely disappeared. We sat and waited for another waiter to bring the drinks and it took sooo long my wife had to get up herself and get the drinks that were sitting for so long it had gotten watered down. So much for that auto gratuity. When explaining the menu, we were told that they were still only serving brunch (it was 3PM) and then they mentioned the catch of the day (didn’t even say what the actual catch was) only to tell us it wasn’t available on the brunch menu. The new bartender they had there DIMITRIS kept repeating a sad old tired joke when someone wanted water and he would ask for their ID. He did this a couple times and it was observed he did this apparently to get numbers? Idk it was weird. Food took so long that we all forgot what we ordered. Some other people’s food came out so quick that by the time they finished we STILL hadn’t gotten our food. Prices we paid don’t reflect the price on the menu. On the menu a tequila sunrise is $10, we paid $13 which isn’t a problem but there was not one mention that it was more. Craziest part at this point was that I ordered an alcoholic drink and NO ONE asked for my ID. Make that make sense. We finally got our food after about 45+ minutes and I’m not sure why it took so long there was only our party and 1 other table. Chicken and waffles was fantastic and someone at my table even said it was the best fried chicken he ever had in his life. Asked for syrup and the waiter gave us 1 for each person (I guess they’re rationing condiments). Eggs and the omelet were overcooked and had no salt or flavor which is disappointing. The first time I had got the tequila sunrise, I found a gnat in it and the bartender immediately made me another and it was delicious but things quickly went from meh to “Why in the hell did we come here?”. Whoever the servers are, didn’t split the check and put everyone on one bill. No biggie right? WRONG!! My cousin paid for his daughter and her husband which left us with the remaining balance which somehow was about $30 more than we ate for. We did the math adding our meals and the gratuity and the taxes and everything and it consistently totaled about $80 but we were presented a bill of $107. Which apparently still wasn’t right. No one seemed to understand how we were overcharged $28. When Blake did come to explain she was SO patronizing and I told her we’re not paying the extra $30 because it didn’t make any sense. Then in this middle of this whole thing which at this point has gotten worse and worse, the super annoying and obnoxious bartender asked us to leave a 5-star review. I think this guy’s drinking on the job because it’s no way in hell it was 5-stars. To be fair, he was welcoming and interacted well with the kids but it was way, way too much like chill and let us enjoy the food. No one seemed to enjoy it and we 10/10 WILL NOT RETURN. I probably won’t recommend this place and that’s a shame because the food was decent. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Google
This place is so cute! Service was amazing- we had a great time with him and the food was chefs kiss- I ordered the steak and eggs, which were absolutely delicious and he got the chicken and waffles. Now I’m not even a person that eats chicken breast - but this chicken cooked to perfection that I even enjoyed the breast! Also getting a leg a thigh and a breast with chicken and waffles??? An Amazing deal!

Don’t pass this little GEM up!! Blake make the magic happen in the Kitchen while Peter served up a great front of the house experience! Rillons (Pork Belly) is amazing. Fried chicken puts others to shame. Bread Pudding is to die for!! Friendly service, awesome food, and great folks!!

UPDATE: I came here today 11/17/2024 and got two apps and a side. Everything played very well together and was bursting with flavor. The service was excellent. 20/10. Perfect solo/date brunch and date night spot! I came here for a solo date and Blake's Place DID NOT disappoint. My crab cake appetizer was bursting with crabmeat and excellent choice flavors, my Dumaine Treat had the cutest and most unexpected presentation, the catfish was SO FRESH it tasted like it was just caught and the entire dish was seasoned to perfection. My CeCe Sunrise was an added bonus expertly crafted with all fresh ingredients and the atmosphere was so beautifully decorated to foster a warm and inviting environment. Fatia and Taryn really took care of me during my visit. I felt like I was amongst family and not strangers. If you want excellent food, drinks, and service look no more because Blake's Place has it all!

Google
visited with my girlfriend on a sunday brunch and it was a great vibe! the 90's r&b brunch was a vibe and the food was great. I got the hot sausage hangover burger and the watermelon marg and Tia gave my girl two great suggestions also. 1000% coming back might even be next week!

Google
Blake’s Place is a hidden uptown gem that serves up delicious and fresh food. I went here to celebrate my 27th Birthday and I’m so glad I did. The staff were so friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I really appreciated how attentive they were to our needs. They even wished me a happy birthday on the digital board☺️ My only criticism would be that it did take a while for us to get our food, which is something that I’m sure will get better with time. However when we got our food it was hot and so good. I ordered the catfish with the River-bend fries. For my drink I ordered a blueberry margarita that was so good. Also, we got there during happy hour so their margaritas was $5. I will definitely be back and recommend Blake’s Place to people.

Yelp
Just left Blake's Place and had an amazing time!!! The drinks were amazing and the food was so good! That honey butter sauce is devine!!! And the staff and Chef Blake are awesome!! This is a hidden gem and a spot that you should make a local destination. And the ambiance is second to none!!! Can't wait to go back for brunch!

Yelp
Honestly, I've tried Blake's food before when it was Tasty Treat and even then it was flavorless. The new spot is just as worst . I ordered the Blackened Pasta , and even asked if they could make it spicy!! Upon receiving the food , It looked like I served a kids plate for $26 , I kid you NOT! The food is just BLAND. A drink with the pasta was $52 , but it definitely WASN'T WORTH IT. Aside from that , the ambiance is great. The Bartender service was great .

Yelp
10/10 on the new menu! Great staff/service. The atmosphere was nice with a great playlist. Definitely recommend if you are in the area

Yelp
SHORT STORY Brunch/Lunch/Dinner *Check website for menus and times -nice spot to eat -street parking (some paid, some not) -reservations (can walk in but depends on availability like most places) -good food -good environment -cards/cash -Black woman owned LONG STORY Met chef Blake at her Tasty Treat food truck and she mentioned her new spot Blake's Places and I been meaning to try it and finally got a chance to. Made a reservation for about 11:30am on a Sunday a little after the place opened for brunch and was able to sit immediately. Waitress and bartender were really nice and attentive. Ordered the chicken and waffles with a side of the dirty potatoes. Food was good to me! I was happy to have actual wings with my waffle again! Them suckas was on point 100% As other people started to trickle in I thought this a really nice spot, nice ambiance, good service, good food, dope music. Door vibe altogether. I'll definitely be going back to check out another vibe outside of brunch. Go check it out!

Yelp
This is my second time at Blake's. First came here this summer and when I came back in town Blake's was on our list of places we had to come back to. Peter was behind the bar and extremely friendly and made our experience enjoyable. The food was great and we will definitely be back again.

Yelp
Growing pains are apparent. I wanted to like this place, and to be clear, I'm still rooting for it. I just can't recommend it as of today. I'll work to revisit and update this review in a few months. I reserved a table about a month ago, and we were seated immediately. And I was able to park right out front. The ambiance is beautiful. It's an intimate, casual, and chic setting, with interesting artwork, colors and textures. My only issue was the periodic flickering of the lights above our table. One minute it was bright, and the next it was dark. Service was lackluster. Our server Javonne had no energy, rarely smiled, and occasionally looked disgusted when describing dishes on the menu. It was so odd and uncomfortable. You expect the server to be excited about the menu, enticing you to spend money. There was also something off about the server, but I'll be diplomatic. We were the only table for a good 15 minutes, and we were parked outside for about 20 minutes before that. The restaurant had no customers during that time, so I don't understand what was going on with the server. Food was ok, overall. Blake's breakfast: 8/10; tasty, but stingy. It consisted of one egg, one slice of bacon, a two inch piece of baguette, and a bowl of grits. Ribeye and eggs: 6/10; we asked for medium well and they gave us past well done. While the cuts were well-seasoned, they were thin and tough to chew. Salmon omelette: 6/10; where's the salmon? Pancakes: 8/10; the side consists of two big and fluffy cakes. They were stingy with the syrup, though, and I had to request more. Water: 6/10; I typically don't comment on the water, but this tap water had a distinct, unpleasant smell. Definitely compliments of Sewerage and Water Board. I'm so over this restaurant non-cash trend where you pay a fee for using a credit card. I was charged a $6 fee just because I used a credit card as my payment method. This used to be a cost of doing business, but passing the cost to the customer has gotten out of hand.

Yelp
I never got a chance to take any pictures. But the owner of this restaurant also happens to be one of my favorite food trucks at work, and I was surprised and delighted to discover that she was the owner. I had the pasta alla vodka, which was delicious and the portion size was very generous. Lovely little hole in the wall, I'll be back!

Yelp
It was a nice clean lines and cute decor place. I went for lunch with co-workers. It took the server/staff a minute to acknowledge us. We actually sat down on our own. It also took a minute for the server to get us menus. It appeared that they only had one server. It's a small place. I had the chicken parmesan. It was kind of bland. Cute place, but the service and food were subpar.

Yelp
I took my wife to celebrate her recent retirement. We arrived at 1:25pm for brunch. The ambiance was nice. The place is clean, nicely decorated and the music was on point. The service was great. Very welcoming and attentive staff. The pancakes were 10/10. The crawfish omelette was 9/10. The dirty potatoes were 8.5/10. My wife had the Dumaine catfish and grits. She said it was delicious and I agree. Blake's Place does not disappoint! We will be back!
google avatar

Cheron P.

Yelp
I would definitely come back. We came right before close and I think the people were ready to go but rightfully so. I had the steak and grits and the catfish and grits. Both were amazing! I wish the steak was ribeye as advertised but it was still well seasoned and filling. The catfish was bomb with the sauce on top. We could have gotten more grits with steak but no biggie. The coffee was great. Didn't try any cocktails. Server was very attentive and the customer service was great. Small black owned restaurant with great vibe. Affordable prices also!

Yelp
Delicious food and friendly service, what more can you ask for? My partner: "I can't shovel this food into my face fast enough.". Enough said. (Super easy to get to on the 12 tram. Take a walk in Audubon Park to walk off some of the girth you'll put on).

Yelp
We were a party of three on a Saturday evening. The place is cute! The staff was great and was able to answer our questions and accommodate various requests. I had the lavender passion fruit lemonade, which was blended perfectly. Not too sour, not too sweet. For the entrée I had the Dumaine Treat. You can choose to have your catfish grilled or fried for this. I chose grilled. It was delicious! The pasta? Flavorful and creamy. The shrimp? Huge! The catfish, grilled to perfection. I'd definitely come back here!

Yelp
The entire East Carrollton neighborhood of New Orleans has been devoid for a while of new and exciting restaurants. While Maple and Oak Street have both had its fair share of dining establishments churning through the area, outside of that, the locale hasn't seen the infusion of fresh cuisine that other areas of the city have been getting for a while. So when I learned about Blake's Place and it being located where it is, it immediately became a must try for me as soon as possible. Blake's Place plants itself in an intimate, classic New Orleans home, providing for a cozy atmosphere that's decorated head to toe with stylish pieces of art. When I visited, the dining area hadn't been too busy, which allowed the waiter to give us quite a bit of attention. The staff answered all our questions very well and we really had a good sense of what we wanted after getting all the information. The food came relatively quickly and really satisfied us. We ended up sharing two entrees and an appetizer and the portions had ultimately been perfect for us. That being said, the main issue with the restaurant had to have been the prices. While we really enjoyed the food, the prices turned out to be far beyond what I truly consider acceptable for the amount of food and quality we received, so I do hope Blake's Place can address that in the future.
google avatar

Yelp
Zero stars! Went for a work lunch, party of 6. We were the very first table in the restaurant. The server could not locate the lunch menus so we used our phones and the website. We order appetizers and were informed that one of the appetizers was not available. It took 30 minutes to get our appetizer (fancy French fries). After an hour, 3 of the entrees came out. There was no communication from the server on status of the other 3 entrees. Finally asked to talk to the manager. He was polite and gave us a small discount. He should've comped the meals that took 1.5 hours to come out to the table. Food issues: cheddar burger did NOT have cheddar; chicken wrap had a VERY small amount of chicken and tasted charred; chicken parm was NOT chicken parm, had some gray sauce, and a sprinkle of cheese; shrimp poboy had spoiled tomato slices and tails on some of the shrimp.

Yelp
Great new lunch spot! Some coworkers and I needed a new lunch spot and Blake's Place was definitely a hit. We all had the burger lunch special. The burger was delicious and juicy. The waiter was very attentive. We will definitely be returning for the awesome $10 lunch special!

Chelsea J.

Yelp
For a last minute reservation, we were accommodated really well! The food was great and the service was a 10/10.

Diana M.

Yelp
I made a reservation 3 weeks in advance after reading about their R & B brunch in Eater. I called to confirm the reservation that morning. When we arrived they didn't have a table for us and no estimate on how long it would be. There also isnt live music.

Sheereen R.

Yelp
The food, customer service, and ambiance were all great! We will be returning to try other food & drinks on the menu.

Yelp
Great food and service! Our waiter was attentive and did a good job of taking care of us along with his other tables. Our food came out in a timely manner. It was well prepared. Definitely recommend this spot.

Yelp
This restaurant is dope. The music and vibes were perfectly curated. I got my food fast. Idk what it was called, something with catfish and shrimp but it was cool. Best part of the night was the bartender, she was attentive and hella friendly. Def coming back with the homies.

Heather R.

Yelp
I booked Easter brunch for my family of 4. We always try to support new businesses. After reading a write up on Eater, we took a chance. Sadly, it was sub par. My sons pancakes were over cooked. 3 of the 4 meals came out and then we waited and waited for another. We were told it was bc the waffle was not to chefs liking but when it finally came, it was chewy and hard to eat. I'm sad to say that there are some Kinks to work out and if spending $150 on a meal is something you only do every once in a while, you may want to choose elsewhere.. or get the shrimp & grits. They were actually great.

S J.

Yelp
Very cute place and great service. Food was great also. Only downside is that it was a little warm in there. I would definitely go back.

I have eaten here and the food taste amazing. The appetizers , everything were truly a tasty treat

Yelp
I had a private dinner group reservation for 6:30 pm and was pleased that they honored it due to the new hours of operation change. When I arrived, I noticed that my guest was outdoors owing to the restaurant's excessive heat that took over an hour to be semi-comfortable with some taking off evening blazers or shirts. However, I was informed that the pricing for Wednesday's drink special would be honored as well, but they were not. Drinks that were listed on the website weren't in stock. The guest observed the bartender place a drink in a bottle that did not contain the same liquor as the one to be served. Once received the drink it didn't taste well and requested another drink. We had a four-course menu and a table shared, so I had to inquire when the food would be served after being there for 45 minutes of sitting with no food. The guest's entrée was very salty, with undercooked meats, and fried chicken that was supposed to be a 3 piece looked like it was cut from the 2nd piece to make the 3rd piece. Didn't not meet our expectations.  I was also informed by the manager that I may pay for additional guests on the event day but was overcharged for drinks and food, which was unacceptable.  Blake the owner never tried to make things right by coming out to speak with us and never revealing who she was. The owner and chef's actions were quite unprofessional. The list of complaints about this terrible birthday dinner is endless. This business is not equipped for large gatherings, and we were the only guests there. I expected to enjoy my birthday dinner based on the reviews, but it fell short. We will not be returning.

Chris D.

Yelp
Recently opened and items not available from menu at 5:30 pm. Unavailable wines from list. Dinner items that were unavailable were items that could have been picked up from any grocery store on way in to prepare for the night. Food was entry level. Chicken parm is the same chicken covered in hot sauce used for the chicken Alfredo dish just breaded now for the chicken parm dish. Both pastas were over cooked. The bbq shrimp app was sent back after we both tried it. Impossible to peel, warm at best, and both the shrimp and sauce tasted overpoweringly fishy...not good. Menu should describe dishes better especially if it's all just buffalo chicken several ways. Would not consider this Cajun-Italian. Not even sure what it falls under. But if you enjoy buffalo chicken you might like it. Friend was sick after we left and we didn't finish the meals. Also no dessert which wasn't a surprise considering everything else. Had there been a dessert I don't expect it would have been homemade anyway.

Connor H.

Yelp
Stumbled upon this enchanting little spot after an enticing Eater article, and it truly is a hidden gem. The warm, vibrant atmosphere had my girlfriend and I reminiscing about Tiana's place from "Princess and the Frog" - so charming and full of life. It's a place you root for; a culinary treasure we hope thrives for years to come

James K.

Yelp
on the positives. we obtained our check quickly. so it ended on a positive note. that was the only positive. arrival: once seared we were informed of a long list of menu items of which they were out. at 7 pm on a Saturday? bar: there is a bar set up. asked for a martini. was informed they did not have the juice to make one. tried to help and say all they need is ice gin and vermouth. "we don't have vermouth". so went with over priced wine by the glass as no bottle choices food; shrimp in dish were fried well but the catfish in the dish was warm at best - probably cooked then waiting on the rest. on a bed of overcooked gooey pasta. the sauce did have nice favor though in summary. just say no

Liz L.

Yelp
The service was prompt, friendly and excellent. The food was reasonably priced and very tasty. Best of all it was piping hot. The drink menu was good as well. Highly recommend this restaurant. I'm

Yelp
After having a reservation, the business was not able to accommodate our party of 8, despite us being on time and the ONLY customers upon arrival. The food may have been ok, but it took 2 hours to come out and still was incomplete because everyone had not received their orders. After patiently waiting and politely informing the cook/owner of the wait and unfulfilled orders, she not only blamed the waitress, but was very rude and unpleasant in the process. She was very unprofessional with an even nastier attitude. She then insisted on providing an entree she claimed had already been prepared after being told repeatedly it was no longer wanted after the extensive NOW 2+ hour wait, and had the audacity to still charged for what she claimed was the "preparation of the food". Now at this point we are 3 hours in with appetizers and entrees STILL missing and the bill in hand. As we gathered to pay for this ridiculous service and food that was NEVER received, we were rushed and threatened to have police called if we didn't hurry because of them closing. This experience was HORRIBLE and by far the worst. The overall appearance of the exterior of the place was nice, but the ladies bathroom was unfinished and nasty, the bar had limited drinks, and taste of the food is unknown. We went knowing the place was newly opened and expected some minor delays but would have never imagined the disaster we'd experienced. So disappointing, but BEWARE and proceed with caution at the idea of supporting this business. It's crazy, because when I mentioned my experience to others, it comes with no surprise. If I could give negative stars I would.

Cynthia K.

Yelp
Atmosphere and people very cordial..Food good , but portion very skimpy...I ordered an omelet and got no bread. When the cook brought the omelets out , I asked for bread ; he brought some he had grilled. As I said , lovely place , but not the place to go if you are hungry.

Ronelle R.

Yelp
The food is delicious! Service is amazing! I would definitely recommend going there. Wait time was not long either compared to other restaurants.

Penny B.

Yelp
We visited the restaurant for the first time on a Friday night. Although we had reservations there was only one employee who had begun working there the day before. He was a competent waiter but didn't know how to set up in the restaurant - turn on music, adjust lights, etc. Apparently there was also one person working in the kitchen. About an hour after opening another employee arrived apologizing for being late. The menu was small but the food was very good. Although this is a new restaurant and it was a Friday night, the owner was not there. I think if the owner were there or if staff were more experienced it could be a good restaurant. The lack of music was definitely a problem because the three tables of people in there were all talking to each other. We would have preferred a more private experience. As far as food the Caesar salad and fried catfish were excellent. Perhaps this restaurant will become better organized with time.

Yelp
We went to this place for my nephew's birthday it was a party of q0 including 2 children ages 3 and 6 first we ordered the bbq shrimp and the wings the bbq shrimp had no flavor all we tasted was lemon and w sauce that's it , ok next the wings were just ok nothing to talk about they were a after thought if you know what I mean let's get into my entrée I ordered the dumain pasta I think it was called it was alfredo linguine with fried fish and fried shrimp first of all the shrimp was huge the only gave you 2 but this is what triped me out they were fried with the whole shell on where they do that at it was a no for me the alfredo had no flavor the fish tasted only like lemon and the batter easily came off and was hard to chew.My daughter had the burger that tasted like vinegar and had to much crust ,my other daughter had the ribeye was very thin and salty they asked for loaded baked potatoes and wasn't told that they didn't have any and was bought French fries automatically no one asked if they wanted any other side that was available. There's so much more I can say but we like to support our black owned business hope they get it together as of now will not go back
